I am a 68 yo retired Air Force Msgt, diagnosed with type II about 1994. Every doctor I had thought I had BG under control. I think it's questionable. I have always had BG spikeing above 200. I showed early signs of kidney disease about the time the military health system kicked me out and forced me to go to a doc in the civilian, disorganized world. I saw my first nephrologist in Jan 2012. By that time, I was already CKD stage III. All the nephrologist did was put me on diurhetics, adding Lasix to the HCTZ I was already taking for CHF, and taking me off of metformin. He also told me to go on a low potassium diet. I am now stage four CKD (GFR=25). Not looking forward to dialysis. I have informed my family and friends that I will decide every step of the way whether I will participate in dialysis, what type and when to quit and die. My family are all on board with that.
