The race is called Fort 4 Fitness. They do a 4 mile, 10k, half-marathon, and marathon on the same day. I signed up for the half-marathon. Having not done any race before, it was tempting to go with something shorter, but honestly I want simply completing the race to be a challenge. I've already done a 6 1/2 mile training run, and I want my stretch goal to focus on distance.

I also agree with BFITZH2O, paying for a race starts your commitment and gets you motivated.

Welcome ! I too am new here. Going from past experience, nothing motivates like plunking down some cash for an event ( Half Marathon ) several months down the road.

Hi all,
I finally made my way to the team after PLMitch told me about it in another spark forum last month. I'm 39 years old and my running experience is pretty limited. Last fall I did the 9 week couch to 5k training program. Then I sat around all winter. D'oh! This spring I re-started and completed couch to 5k again. I also first read about the Galloway method and have started using run/walk intervals as I increase my distances.

My goal is to reach at least a half marathon distance and from there I'll decide what to do next. Right now I'm more interested in distance than time. I want to be in better physical shape overall. I also love hiking and want to be a stronger hiker. The running I've done so far has already helped greatly there. Last month I was very pleased to complete a 17 mile hike in about 5 hours without great difficulty. It would have been much, much harder without the training. I was sore and tired when I was done, but I wasn't at my limit and I recovered well. My next plan for hiking is to be stronger when I travel to the mountains. Since it's so flat here, I think the best way to do that is to run. :)

At the moment I haven't really settled on one training method. Sometimes I run for 30 minutes continuously. Sometimes I do around 10 intervals at a 3/1 run/walk. I did an MM for the first time last Friday and on Monday did my first longer run by going 6 1/2 miles at 3/1 intervals.

The hardest part for me is motivation on some days. It was particularly tough when I didn't run for almost a week in late May due to a family vacation, then got sick right after I got home. It ended up being almost two weeks and at least for me, the more time passes, the easier it is to just quit. I'm back and improving again though.

My other struggle is a commitment issue. I keep eyeing a local half-marathon race that happens in late September, but I still haven't signed up for it. I need motivation! hah... I'd have three months left to get from my longest distance so far of 6 1/2 miles to the HM distance. I think that's doable.
