Sorry to hear about this Nancy and I know how frustrating it is when your body doesnt do what you want it to do. But you are being smart and not pushing yourself when you shouldnt is ultimately the best decision you can make for your body

After last night's training run, I decided that I am not going to run a half-marathon this year - or maybe any year, for that matter. I ended up in my podiatrist's office on Tuesday getting cortisone shots in both feet at the site of the former neuromas - after following the HM training guide while on vacation last week. Apparently the longer distance is aggravating the scar tissue. Or, maybe I'm just not used to running that much. I usually only run 1 day, and then bike, swim, or use the elliptical on other days - since I'm a triathlete. I thought that my routine was saving my knee that has very little cartilage left in it. Apparently it's also been saving my feet. My knee hasn't bothered me at all.

My doc said he trusted me to know when to quit. My feet were burning after the training run last night. Even icing didn't settle them down, and I had a restless night of feet twitching. So valuing my feet the way that I do, and not wanting to live on cortisone shots, and wanting to continue as a sprint distance triathlete, it is a tough decision, but I think that I'm done with long distance running.

Thank you for all your advice and encouragement. I will continue to learn from Jeff's "Book on Running" and practice his suggestions when I do run. For now, I'm happy to be a sprint distance triathlete.

Thanks for all your encouragement and advice.

I got an email this week that the local Life Time Fitness was starting a half-marathon training group. So I suited up and showed up and am looking forward to working with a coach and other like-minded runners. There's is a 12-week program, so it's a little more aggressive than I need. I got Jeff Galloway's "Book on Running" and will apply what I'm learning in his book to my training program at Life Time. We ran on a treadmill on Wednesday evening, because it was raining out. Tomorrow, we should be able to run outside. I much prefer running outdoors!

Have a fabulous weekend. And good luck to those who have an event this weekend!

I run with a slight tear in my right meniscus. As long as I keep it slow, I seem to be OK.
Good luck with your training.

And welcome! emoticon

Welcome, Heather! I added you as a Spark friend and replied to your page. We have probably passed each other running (or maybe biking for me) and didn't even know it! It's a small world.

Deb, thanks for letting me know where you got your Jeff Galloway training program. I'll check that out.

I guess I should have mentioned the Jeff Galloway training program that I use is off of the runDisney site.

Hi Nancy, I am new to this team myself, however I came across this post because I saw Naperville! This will be my third year running the half portion of the Naperville Marathon and you will love it - it is a great race for all types of runners. It is one of the best races I have ever run, which is why I keep signing up for it. It was actually my first half as well and similar to you, I had my doubts on whether I could accomplish the distance, but I ran the race with confidence and it changed my life. You will no regret signing up! By the way, its actually perfect weather usually despite it being November. Its cold at the start but once you get going, the cooler temps really help. It is also so cool to run throughout neighborhoods where everyone comes out to support the runners so you will have people cheering you on almost the entire time. Trust me, you will do great. Definitely reach out if you have any other questions about the race. I live in a bordering town to Naperville so I know it very well.

Deb, thanks for the encouragement! WOW, I'm impressed that you did 2:30 on your first half-marathon! Congrats on your accomplishment. That is VERY encouraging.

The race cutoff time is 3 hours for the half-marathon. I will look into Jeff's Beginner program. What I see online is a 12-week program. I'll have to get his book and read it while on vacation next week. I'm 17 weeks out from the November race now, so maybe I should plan on doing my first half while in California in February instead of Chicagoland in November. BIG difference in race conditions!

Go for it!! Look at the time to finish! If it gives you 4 to 5 hours to finish the Half then it is totally doable!! Jeff Galloway's Beginner programs for a 3:30 finish is like 18 weeks. Totally doable! I started Jeff's intervals in April of 2014, I was only doing maybe 3 miles at a time, about 3 times a week. Then I started to build with his Princess 18 week Beginners program when it started. I have barely ever run. One summer my husband and I walked and would do short "sprints" but that was about all I have ever done. I finished the Princess Half in 2hrs:30min. And I had knee pain to begin with and shin splints. I wore compression sleeves for my shins and a knee wrap for my knee during the Princess Half. Definitely use ice afterwards!! And after training runs as well. (I also have a secret product that we use that helps with inflammation instead of over the counter drugs but as it is something we sell I can't say much here) But I know you can do it! Go for it!! I'll be cheering for you!!

Thanks, Catherine. I haven't looked at Jeff's plans yet.

The Naperville Half Marathon is Nov 8, so yes it is early in the month. That's 17 weeks out. All I can do is start, and if the knee bothers me, extend the training to February. Thanks for your advice.

I think that Jeff's HM plans are usually around 16 weeks (for a "to finish" race), so if you start a training plan this coming Monday, you would have just enough time to complete the plan (assuming the race is early in the month). But given the situation with your knee, if I were you, I'd give myself more time to ramp up and I'd train for longer than the minimum.

Thanks for responding, Live2Run4Life,

I regularly run 3-4 miles. I've maybe done three 10Ks this year - just for fun, not in a competition. So I'm hearing you say that November might be a little too soon for me to do a half-marathon. I'll read the books that I got and see what the training program looks like. I'm going to be in California for several weeks in February. Maybe I'll look for one there instead. The weather would be much nicer in CA in February than in Chicago in November!

A November race might be pushing it if you have to start from scratch. But if you have been running regularly for the past few months and can already handle a 5 mile long run, it should be doable.

Hello, Spark Friends!

My name is Nancy. I live in the Chicago suburbs. I'm a sprint distance triathlete (800m swim, 20K bike, 5K run) who occasionally runs a 10K for fun. I'm in my early 60s and have had meniscus repair surgery twice on the same knee. My orthopedic doc has advised me against running (since I have very little cartilage left in my knee), which is why I've only done sprint distance triathlons.

However, I have found that with the right running shoes, and working with an endurance program like Jeff Galloway's, I've been able to run with little knee pain.

Reading your stories is giving me confidence that I CAN do a half marathon. I'm thinking about doing one in November 2015. I'm going to get Jeff's book and read it on vacation next week. I hope I'm not starting too late for a November race.

I'm grateful that I found this team! Is anyone in the Chicago suburbs? Anyone know of a JG running group?
