Hi,

I agree it is hard for the first couple of intervals to walk when everyone else is still running and you are still really bunched up. If you are starting in the corral system, most of the people in my category are running the whole way so you will have to get to the side to take the walk breaks at first. If you drop to a lower corral then you have a lot of people to weave around.I know the point of the run/walk method is to do it right from the start so you have fresh legs all the way through to the end. Last year I did a 1/2 in August and did run 3 walk 1 intervals but didn't walk until about the third interval just to get past the crowd. I was really tired at the end and dropped down to run 2, walk 1 which I think is an indication of going too fast at the start/not taking the breaks. It was really hot so maybe I didn't factor in the heat. Maybe the more experienced runners can tell us about the importance or not of doing the walk breaks from the start and how to manage the crowds.

Thanks for your comments and GOOD LUCK. Let us know how it goes!

Ann

Hey all!

I do not know why I didn't consider looking for a Galloway spark team earlier!!

I got into running Dec of 2012 with my first 5k after a lot of treadmill. 2013 brought me a handful of races and 3 half marathons, so I decided I'd give it a try for one marathon in 2014. Honestly, I'm not sure the marathon will be my thing after how I feel after half marathons (however, I'll admit, I have never properly 'trained' for one and have been lucky. I do not think that is the wa to go with a full marathon however.

I have loved the run/walk method ever since someone discussed it with me and reading the book awhile back it makes sense and I have utilized it on my long runs and just general running.

I still have a hard, hard, hard time however, getting to walk at that first timing. Pride in me doesn't want to start walking when everyone around me isn't!!

So I'm glad to see there are folks out there who implement this method too! And I'd love any first time marathon advice!!
