One thing I advise people is to pick your training plan first. Read and pay attention to the time commitment and prior training involved. Jeff Galloways to finish plan will usually allow you to start with no prior training. The flip side of that is they take more time to get to the race. Other plans will assume you have a certain weekly running mileage and maybe that you have been running for a while.

Once you pick a plan that your are prepared for and where you feel you can commit to figure out what the earliest race date is.

I see people who pick there race and then have to skimp or accelerate there training. That increases the likelihood of injury and makes it less likely that you will be successful.

Thanks everyone..I have been to his website and also bought one of his books to start out with. Once I've absorbed that, I'm sure I'll have questions on practical application and will appreciate the benefit of your experience.

I'm planning on signing up for a 10K in early December if it doesn't seem unreasonable once I get a plan together....I think I have time if I commit to training for it and I find that with a race commitment, I won't wimp out on my training schedule as easily, LOL!

I try to think of my goal as working to improve my health and enjoyment of life. My goal is not at run. Although I might run at some point if it did not conflict woth that primary goal.I find the Galloway method has been great help in improving my fitness. Welcome to the team .

Welcome to the team and congratulations on your weight loss and fitness journey.

When I first started, I too, thought I was not a runner if I walked. But I have found that walk breaks do help a great deal - especially when you start longer distances like HM, M, or Ultra running.

Good luck with your goals.

Hi GEMLADYONE, nice to see you here! I was one of those who thought I had to run each and every step, or it wasn't 'running'. After several months I can tell you that the Galloway method *is* running and it has saved my knees (and ankle) that were damaged from previous activities. I thought I would never run again, but here I am. Sorry to sound like an infomercial for Galloway, but I really love his method although I'm still learning. Recommend going to his website and/or getting his books, they are very helpful as well as 'talking' to the team members here on the thread.

I'm nearly at my goal weight after losing 60 pounds this year with SP. I started running earlier this year with the Running for Rookies 5K program. I really enjoy it, and completed my first official 5K in April (with some walk breaks). I had to back off running for a few months due to some hip pain, but am back to it and looking forward to cooler weather and to more races. I've been trying to work up to running the whole 5K distance with no walking, but now after looking into the Galloway method, am wondering if that really should be my goal or not. My 5K training time now is about 42 minutes with 2 walk breaks at 90 degrees and high humidity. Anyway, I'm interested in learning more and finding out what works best for me.
