What if we woke up tomorrow with only those things that we thanked God for today?

I was reading about the first three Steps the other day, and I read something (in Lawrie's 12 Step Study, I believe) that really struck me. It stated that the third Step, where we "Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him" is really only a decision to do the rest of the Steps, and when we continue working the Steps, we will have a spiritual awakening because of the Steps.

I took away from that that we don't need to have a spiritual awakening BEFORE we can continue, but we get it from continuing.

Hope that helps!

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I appreciate the encouragement and input. I like the idea of the higher power being the group in general, that may be a helpful concept for me.

Getting your mind around the "Higher Power" thing is tough for a lot of newcomers. My first sponsor told me that the only thing I needed to know what there WAS a higher power and it's wasn't me. It isn't religious at all, but spiritual. I knew a man who thought that his Higher Power lived in his glove compartment, and we he commuted to work he'd open his glove compartment and talk to God. For some, the Higher Power is the Group. Why not? The more you go to meetings, the more you'll see that each person has a different take on the Higher Power thing.

Welcome Monroe. I've been in this group a short time but not new to the OA program just been away a long time. I like phone meetings. Be sure to find a sponsor to help you get going in 12 step work. The meetings usually have sponsors give their numbers. Someone on this group may step up too.

When I was in another 12 step program I had a hard time turning to God as my HP with that issue so it was suggested to me that I use the group as my HP because they had what I wanted and we're certainly more powerful that I was. Good luck and hang in while you find out how to work this. IT WORKS.

Hi there, I'm a newbie. I have been a compulsive overeater for as long as I can remember, but am only recently realizing that is what I am/was. I very recently realized that I have an addiction and need help. I've done a but of research on OA, and to be honest I'm not sure how to integrate the steps into my belief system (the religious aspect is difficult for me as I do not believe in a higher power per se). That being said, I do recognize that I need help and am hoping this is the place for me. I'm overwhelmed and not sure how to even start working the steps, etc. I don't have a schedule that will allow me to attend in person meetings but I'm hoping to find a phone meeting to join.
