Be careful with staying on the South Beach diet. It is not a balanced diet, and is high in protein. The problem with diets (or plans as some call them) is that they are not balanced and in the long run they will cause issues - for high protein diets it's a risk for kidney problems from the extra work it has to do to process the protein, and you may feel fatigue and crankiness due to lack of carbs. You may also feel mentally sluggish as the brain needs carbs to properly function.

Take another look at the Spark approach to your everyday diet - you CAN lose weight and still eat potatoes, rice and pasta - just in reasonable portions, and not dripping in fat, creamy sauces, and sugar. Also, if you eat a carb, eat a protein with it. Many carbs have a low glycemic index which means it floods your bloodstream with sugars, peaks, then crashes and then you feel hungry and craving more carbs. Adding in a protein slows down the digestion and keeps your blood sugar more stable, thereby making you feel fuller longer. For example, if you want a baked potato, instead of a whole potato with butter and sour cream, eat a half potato topped with canned tuna, minced onion and some salsa.

Of course exercise helps, but no one can out exercise a bad diet. I see a 280 calorie candy bar and I think, "I will have to run about 30 extra minutes to burn those calories, and that doesn't count what it does to my blood sugar." When I look at it that way, I have no desire for that candy bar - it's too much work.

Sorry if I sound preachy, but when I hear the word "diet", I want to run through the streets screaming, "Just say NO!"
