One of the greatest gifts in life we can give ourselves is the gift of finding supportive friends to hold us up and lift us when we need lifting or steadying.

I think your right. I do need to take a step back every once in a while. I love my clients to bits and I love that instead of a greeting every time I work I get a hug too. It's nice but there are definitely times that I need to step back and let myself relax and thank God for this trip. I think I will be a better worker when I get back because I will have caught up on sleep and be relaxed.

It's always nice to be acknowledged as making a difference. Sounds like you really need time to step back and put your impact on these youths into perspective. Sounds like you're a very positive part of their lives and you don't even know it!

Thank you all so much for the support! It really does mean a great deal to me! It's a job that can be very complicated and provoke a lot of feelings, especially when you strike up a bond or relationship with these youth. These guys amaze me everyday with how resilient they are in dealing with the things that they have and it truly inspires me. At times though its also very stressful, particularly when dealing with physical altercations or the occasional youth that talk back. I want to remain in the field so one skill that will really be useful for me is knowing how to relieve stress and being able to do some self care for myself because I don't want to burn out. Just today I told a couple of them that I was going on my trip and they all said they would miss me and that I'm one of the nicest, funniest staff they've ever had at the shelter, and we have a lot of staff members who have great hearts and minds, and I feel so lucky to be included in it.

Welcome aboard SARATYC. You have both a rewarding job and a stressful one. It's good you have joined to learn new and better ways to cope with stress. Even those who help others eventually need support and help themselves. You're doing a great job taking the first step.

emoticon Sara,

You didn't ramble, we help each other by sharing. I am glad you joined. I sure know the stress coming from the job you do. I worked in high intensity residential with dual diagnosed adults. It is imperative that we take care of ourselves if we want to have anything to give away.

Have a great vacation in Singapore, sounds exciting. Looking forward to hearing more from you.

Hi, Sara. It sounds like you're doing great things for yourself--already pounds lighter than the start--and working on healthy ways to deal with your stress. What incredibly worthy work you do! I truly hope that you get the stress under control while not losing the fire in your belly that one has to have to work with youth-under-attack. We're cheering you on :) I saw on your page that you are looking for recipes...aside from the great ones here on SP, why not consider taking a little cooking class while you're on holiday? Most Asian food is tasty, satisfying, and (best of all!) simple. It would be a fun little thing to do while visiting (or with) your folks. Enjoy, and welcome!

Hi! My name is Sara and I joined because one thing that it is imperative that I do is learn how to deal and cope with stress. It's my downfall, especially considering my job (I work with at risk homeless youth) and I feel the need to work on how that affects me. I used to be an emotional eater- any time anything bad happened to me I would eat and that of course has lead to me being almost 80 lbs overweight. I have taken measures to try and curb this and they are working so far- I don't eat past 9 pm and anytime I get upset I go for a walk, but its just what I'm eating in between that gets me. I tend to eat out too much and need to start making better choices. I also do not cook very well. This month I am actually taking a step to de stress in that I am taking a 3 week holiday to Singapore to visit with my parents and am hoping that when I return in August that I will be refreshed. Thank you all for letting me ramble :)

Nice to meet you all!

Sara
