Yeah. I greeted my husband with Merry Christmas this a.m. emoticon At least it's not going to stick around for long.

Going to Yin Yoga tonight - candlelight. Thought I'd try it as others seem to like it. But I'll have to wear long pants and long sleeve shirt again. To think on Monday the studio had windows open!

Howdy Bismarck-Mandan neighbors. Kind of a bummer to wake up to a world blanketed in white snow. Oh, well, nothing we can do about it. Have a great day! Julie emoticon

Hey Hayley,
Carol will be starting the new challenge threads. However feel free to join in mid challenge any time.
I have actually made my 5 pound loss this month and a bit more.
Hoping/praying/feeling determined to keep this up.

Hayley:

I'd sure think you could join the February challenge. Just make yourself a template in the February challenge thread and post your losses on Mondays. NewLibrarian will take it from there.

For March I'll be starting a new thread down in the Team Challenge area. I'll post guidelines at the end of next week. Then there will be a challenge chat thread, plus a challenge template thread. It's easier to pick results out of people's templates than to run through all the chats.

Good luck on the candida thing, yuck. I've really stomped down on carbs and had the best loss I've had in a while.

Hey, Carol!

That sounds like a great (and possibly doable) challenge! Is it too late to join the February one I wonder? I understand the up and down...I call it the 5 pound weight plateau (that 5 pound weight range that you just can't get below!). I just recently cut out sugar and dairy from my diet (battling systemic candida overgrowth) along with many grains, and I am experiencing the most steady gradual weight loss I ever had...and (shhh) I'm not even working out much right now (although I want to and have more energy when I do).

Yep, insurance is almost a joke these days...it's really too bad. I'd sneak you in the back way for an MRI if I could. emoticon

Hi, Hayley:

We're trying to lose 5 pounds in February. I keep going up and down. emoticon

In March, I'm going to post a challenge thread to last that month, March 7 to April 2. Each week will be a mini challenge with points to be awarded for challenges met. At the end of the March challenge, I'll send the winner a big Spark Goodie. Just for fun and health-focused. Since I'm not the group leader, NewLibrarian will pin the thread. She'd like each of us to take on a month's challenge, so she doesn't have to do it all. There'll be a post in the last week of February.

I hope I don't have to have any more MRIs either! Gone are the days when insurance would automatically pay 80%. With my out of pocket and co-insurance, that sucker was expensive.

Found the clip on lights on Zulily.com. That's the site where I go window shopping. Their offerings aren't consistent but they usually feature something in the fitness realm. Otherwise, sporting goods stores like Scheel's Sports have stuff like this; hats with flashlights, reflective ankle and wrist wraps, etc.

Enjoy your walks, and hurry up Spring!

JF: I envy you getting your husband to go with you on walks. Mine thinks it's just nasty, apparently, to walk for walking's sake. He thinks you need to be going somewhere, or looking for artifacts.

I like walking in the evening in the Fall, especially. I have a couple of little lights that go on my shoelaces for visibility. My road doesn't have sidewalks, shoulders, or streetlights. so you need to be careful.

I'm certainly enjoying our nice mild Winter!

It sure was a nice weekend for late January in ND! I hadn't exercised on Friday yet at 8:30 pm so hubby suggesting going for a walk outside. It was dark, we couldn't find the flashlights, but we went anyway - just a 20 minute stroll down the gravel road. It was kind of fun so we did it last night too! We found a flashlight for last night's walk. Today we took a quick walk in the daylight. It was a bit chilly but anytime you can walk outside in January it's a good thing. There was no ice on the road either. We always want to be safe! emoticon

I hope everyone has a good week, filled with healthy goals!

Hi Hayley:

Just a quick note to suggest you check out the challenge New Librarian may start. We have so few active members in ND, you'd be a great addition when we get the challenge going!

I had an MRI of my knee in November, before I met you here. If I have another one, can I request you be my nurse? emoticon

And greetings to you too! I did enjoy the beautiful weather on Saturday...my sister-in-law and I walked around the track by the Y, and it had been cleared of most of the slush.

Lol...it is a small world! Yes, they are busy getting everything lined up. Thank you...it will be a fun and busy time for sure.

We've been out to Sibley a couple times since having our son. I agree, that's a nice spot for those last-minute camping plans. My husband has been talking about going up to the Big Horns for years, but we always seem to be too busy too when the weather is nice. My husband has his own business doing painting, tiling, remodeling, and the like...and the summer is prime time for that kind of work. We need to start planning vacations for January!

I loved working in oncology, but it can be wearing on you. That was more so when I worked in a clinic because you really got to know your patients well, almost like friends...and so it got tough to see your friends, many times, not do too well. MRI has it's challenges too, but it is significantly less stressful. There's a trend of working too much and too hard...and it always catches up to you. Too bad moderation isn't considered a way of life anymore.

Hope you conquered your mountain of laundry. It really doesn't ever end...or the dishes.

Greetings! I hope you have enjoyed the beautiful weather today. However, the streets were a sloppy mess!

Hayley - It's a small world that you father-in-law took over the organic farm because I just talked to his wife the other day. I work for Bismarck Parks and Recreation District and she called to inquire about using a parking lot in Sertoma to drop off the veggies each week. I wish them a lot of luck!

Another "close to town" place to camp is General Sibley Park. We don't camp, but I know a lot of Bismarck-Mandan people go there to camp on the weekends. Some feel that it's close enough to home if they need to drive back for something but that they still get the camping experience. We had a small camper and went 2 or 3 times a few years ago, but it's hard to get away when we live on a farm. When the weather is nice for camping, it's also nice for making hay or doing something with the cattle and crops.

I understand that oncology can be a tough field to work in. Is it less stressful being at Sanford MRI? I have heard of people that are so exhausted at the end of the work day that they can't do much more than go home and veg out. I have been so fortunate most of my life to have jobs that I can leave work and work and most days, still have energy when I get home.

I'd best go fold a load of clothes. The laundry never ends! emoticon

Carol,

Yes, they did. My father-in-law has grown up farming and has been waiting for just the right opportunity to set out on his own. Since really making an effort to eat more and more veggies, I am toying around with the idea of getting a full share this time...hoping it would be an encouragement to stick with it. Last year, we split a full share with some friends, and it was just the right amount (and a better price than just doing a small share on your own). I see what you're saying about the grapes...I bet they'd be tasty in a fresh juice then.

I will have to look some of those places up for camping! Gloat away...it's awesome that you get to do that.

I've heard lots about Zulily, but I haven't looked into it yet. Sounds like they have even more goodies than I knew about. Maybe I'll have to add that to my to-do list too (once we get through tax season that is).

I've been at Sanford MRI for several years now. I was an oncology nurse my entire nursing career before that and used to work for Dr. Addo.

My sister-in-law has been trying to get me to try out Yoga for You with her too...I just couldn't remember the name.

Hey, Hayley:

So your in-laws bought Riverbound Farm? Cool! I wish them the very best of luck, and crops! I'm tempted to buy a share for stuff we don't grow ourselves. You should know that the grapes we grow are like little Concord grapes; the kind with the tart skin, the juice inside, then the little slippery fleshy part with the seeds in it. We do eat them raw, but they're probably not something your little son would like! The initial bite is sour.

We've camped in places like historic sites, wildlife refuges, and conservation areas. There are lots of spots out at Heart Butte/Lake Tschida, and we've looked at both Beulah Bay and Hazen Bay, and like Beulah Bay better. Now that we're retired, we can go mid-week when everybody else is at work. Sorry for gloating! emoticon

Have you ever looked at the shopping site Zulily.com? They often have child and parent craft kits that look like a lot of fun, and they have other children's supplies and clothes, too, at big discounts. The only drawback is that nothing is returnable, so if I buy something for myself there, I stick to brands I know or have tried before. I'm picturing your butterflies in my head - you should post a photo on your SparkPage!

Where do you work? I retired from Sanford Behavioral Health and was a Psych nurse my entire career.

ps: camping at Cross Ranch State Park north of Mandan. And, yes, Yoga for Your is close to the Library.

Hi, Julie! Thanks for joining the chat. What kind of farming/ranching do you guys do? I'm not sure if you read my reply to Carol, but my in-laws just took over a farm out in Mandan. What kind of work do you do? I really enjoy reading and baking too. What's your go-to book genre or author? I read a lot of parenting books lately, but my favorites are good fictional novels with lots of surprising twists. Good for you to start running! I hope to try to do the same when the weather warms up. I've made attempts in the past but always seemed to throw my back out or end up with shin splints...I'm hoping this time will be different??

Waking up early is not my strong suit either...especially when there is a long day looming ahead. Hopefully, you will find a nice (more convenient) alternative. I'm glad you've tried out yoga too!

Your exercise streak is awesome and is something to be proud of. I wonder what 2016 will hold?

I will have to check out the Howdy thread.

Finally getting back to you, Carol! We will definitely have to visit the shelter then. My little boy (and his mama) love dogs and cats, and he is so gentle with them too...we might get in trouble with dad if we bring any home with us though.

The cards sound like fun. I've never been into scrapbooking either...too labor-intensive for me. I have been enjoying doing easy craft projects with my son. We made butterfly magnets for the grandmas this week using coffee filters and clothes pins, and they turned out pretty cute.

Sounds like you guys stay pretty busy with your gardens! I didn't even realize that grapes grew well up here...I bet the fresh grapes taste delicious. I know what you mean about the good farmer's markets...you can't beat fresh produce. My husband and I were talking about trying to expand beyond our small herb garden, but I'm not sure if that will happen now that my in-laws have their own farm, Hillside Organic Farm (used to be Riverbound Farm), in Mandan. I'm sure that we will probably buy a crop share from them and help out there on occasion to learn some things rather than trying to do it on our own.

If you know of any good camping spots here in ND, please let me know. We've not ventured too far but would rather camp by ourselves too (rather than with 200 neighbors).

I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying yoga. One of the things I like about it is being able to see results in my flexibility and endurance over time. Yoga was the only exercise I could do late in my pregnancy to relieve back pain, and, boy, it worked great. Yoga for You is that by the Bismarck Library? I don't know that I've had to convince anyone that yoga is a real workout, but I can imagine that many people tend to think it is easier than it is.

JF: thanks for trying out Yoga. It's good to know someone else understands the pain and effort that can go into it! emoticon

I'm not sure I'd being doing this class if I hadn't retired. Devoting my life to work every day from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 pm (including commute), being stressed out all day, all I wanted to do after work was to go home, eat and veg out in front of the TV. Then I'd go to bed by 10 and start all over. I've never been much of a morning person, so I can't even imagine hitting an exercise class at 0545!

Gonna order some seeds soon, and plan my planting under my grow light!

Howdy neighbors! I am also from Bismarck. Here's a bit about me. I am married to a farmer/rancher so we live outside of Bismarck. We have two wonderful teenage daughters who keep us busy, and I have a full-time job. I would like to lose about 10 pounds but any loss is a good one. My interests are reading, baking (not good for the diet), hanging out with the family, gardening, and going on walks. I much prefer walking to running, but I have been incorporating running into my exercise at times because I also know it's good for me.

I did Body Pump for a while (a group fitness class that does weight lifting to music). It's a great workout, but the only time that works well for me is 5:45 am and it gets difficult when I am driving in to do it, rushing home to get ready for my work day and then getting my daughter and myself to school and work. Therefore, I am not doing it right now.

Thanks to Carol, I have started doing a bit of yoga and have enjoyed it. I was really, really sore the first week.

I have had a veggie garden for the past 10 years or so and love it, but it was a disaster this year due to too much weed killer prior to planting. Hopefully next year's will be better.

I started an exercise streak a while ago, challenged by SparkGuy. It was to exercise for at least 10 minutes a day. I have maintained this streak for 470+ days. It's one I am proud of. I even had the stomach flu Friday night and while I wasn't feeling well on Saturday, I walked for 10 minutes and 10 minutes only on the treadmill to keep the streak going. I have also been tracking the miles I walk, run or bike in a year for the past few years. My goal has been 365 miles. 2015 was my best year so far with 652 miles.

I know there was earlier conversation under the Howdy thread about a ND gathering. That would be fun. That's probably all for now. I'm glad the weather is warming up a bit! Julie

Hi: replying to your post of the 13th.

I would recommend taking your son to the Humane Society shelter! They love visitors, as visitors might think about adopting a pet, and serve as socializers for the animals. A nurse I used to work with took her kids at least once a month.

Paper crafting: I try to do cards, I'm not into scrapbooking. I'm not very good and not very artistic so I usually copy patterns other people have done.

We have gardens: I manage the flower gardens, and hubby manages the veggies and fruit. This was always more his idea than mine, but I've grown into it and even do some canning. Can we say grape jelly? We have a grape arbor that produces more every year and I give most of the jelly away. We don't drink ETOH, so don't make wine with the grapes, although some juice I canned got a little wine-y emoticon With our gardens, we started small, then got big and bigger and are now cutting back as there are so many good farmers' markets in town. We also would like to get away more often in the Summer, and I hate to ask the pet-sitter to water the garden, too, though she'll do it.

We've done most of our camping in ND, but took a long vacation to Mesa Verde Nat'l Park a couple of years ago. We generally look for less popular spots, as who wants to go camping with 200 neighbors?!

I'm really loving yoga; I got more positive feedback from one of the teachers today. Although I got really sedentary when I worked at the Clinic for 9 years, I practiced maintaining my flexibility so I didn't go into shock in my first class. Check out yogaforyoubismarck.com, that's the studio I go to, they have all levels of classes and special events, too, like hot yoga.
I usually do M,W,F at 0900. Have you ever had to convince anyone that yoga is truly a workout?

Hope you're enjoying the snow, or if you're not, maybe your little son? Snow angels! Good day and good health to you,

Carol

Hi, Carol! Congratulations on your retirement. I'm a nurse too. emoticon What kind of paper crafts do you do? What do you like to photograph? I haven't been to the Humane Society...do you think I could take my son to visit the animals and give them some love? We have been talking every year about planting a garden. I finally kept a small herb garden alive this last year thanks to my husband rigging a watering hose on a timer for me. My husband and I enjoy camping too but have only gone a couple times since having a child. Where do you guys like to camp?

I really enjoy yoga too. I have chronically tight hamstrings and calves that are seeming to loosen up ever so slightly with yoga. I'm not sure if you have access to youtube, but there are some great yoga videos on there posted by Sarah Beth Yoga that focus on deep stretching broken into different muscle groups (ie. neck and shoulders, hip flexors and hamstrings, low back...). I find that stretching my hip flexors and hamstrings help with pain that I have in my right knee. I was just thinking to myself today that I need to get back to walking. It's so easy to do in nice weather, but the couch and a hot cup of coffee are so much more inviting this time of year than getting out to the mall to walk.

Thanks for responding! I hope to keep in touch so that I can celebrate with you when you lose your 20 (or 50) pounds this year.

Hi Hayley! Thanks for initiating this thread!

I live in Mandan, and am 63 yrs old, married, no children. I just retired from nursing back in April, 2015, and have mostly been working on projects needed on our 20 year old house. I am sometimes inspired to assemble jewelry or do paper crafts, but I don't think of them as my "thing." I do like photography, and am saving for a better camera. We also have 2 cats, and volunteer for Central Dakota Humane Society. We have a vegetable garden, and I've become pretty proficient at canning. We like to go camping, too.

I'm new to yoga, having started through the class offered through BSC. I'm now going to Yoga for You 3 to 4 times a week. I do really enjoy it as it promotes balance, strength and flexibility, something we seniors really need to pay attention to. I've been a sugar addict most of my life, and am working on turning that around. I used to do a lot of walking, but I have an arthritic hip that doesn't like even that little bit of impact. Yoga has actually helped my hip!

I should lose about 50 pounds, but am hoping to lose 20 in 2016.

So that's about it!

I am stronger than the food.

I am not that person any more.

Hi. I didn't see a thread for this yet, so I thought that I would start one. Maybe this thread can help us to connect to people locally...and possibly meet up for coffee or to exercise?? We can each post a little bit about ourselves to see if we might find some Spark friends in the area. I'll start:

I am almost 34 years old, am married, and have 2.5 year old boy.
Goals: Lose 20-35#, have more energy, and be healthier.
Exercise Interests: yoga, pilates, rebounding, bicycling, walking, kayaking, gym/weight-training to name a few.
Dietary interests: Clean eating, detoxes/cleanses, organic, gluten-free, limiting sugar and carbs to kill off candida.
Regular interests: parenting, reading, God, crafts, crochet, thrift store and garage sale shopping, cooking, baking, learning to make things cheaper/better from scratch...

If you think we might have something in common and are interested in connecting, just reply to this post or send me some sparkmail.
