Thank You! I will keep going, this morning was another LB, so I guess I'm going something right! Flying to NH for a short visit with my Daughter tomorrow. Hope I can keep on track, miss that fried New England seafood up there.

Take care,
Darla

Darla, good job on the pound loss! Way to go!

I'm still glad to read the advice that others give. It either confirms my current plan or gives me more ideas.

I have made my goals smaller by concentrating on 10% losses at a time. I am almost at my second 10%. I don't even know what my final goal will be, I guess I'll see when I get there!

Thank you, Darla,
SP set my calories at 1200 and that worked well for me. After I lost weight and continue to do more exercise, I set it from 1200 to 1500. Seems yours is rather high, but give it a try!!!

Hi Carol,
Thanks for your note of encouragement. I too have been dieting, what seems like all my life. I used to be able to lose it fairly easy, but now that I am 58 and that wonderful menopause is full blown, it doesn't come off very easily. I need to lose 50 lbs or at least that is what I'd like to do. I find that the calories are alot more than what I'm used to. Such as Weight Watchers, the total calories was 1450, now on SP its 1500-1800. I am trying to stay on the lower end of that number.
I also had a knee replacement back in May and didn't do any exercise all summer. Now I have started walking again each day at least an hour. Its coming off slowly, only one lb so far this week. Today is Thurs and I started on Mon. But I will take it as its not one more than Mon.
Thanks for your words Carol,
Darle

You have already gotten a lot of very good advice so I will just add a little. I had been a "dieter" for over 60 years when I started Spark People, always had a very difficult time losing weight, then when I did, it just came right back.
On Spark I learned to track my food, actually ate more than I used to when "dieting" and when I raised my calorie count to 1200 the weight started to come off. I lost 50 lbs. in just over one year and have kept it off for 4 years - first time ever! I learned that "diets" end, but a healthy way of eating goes on forever.
And due to a bad knee and hip I couldn't walk or exercise for more than 5 minutes. With the encouragement of Spark and my dear husband I mastered that and now often do 120 minutes of exercise daily. Yes, you can do it. Read as much as you can on this site, visit other people's Spark pages, participate on the threads, and you will be successful.
Holler if I can be of any help!!!

Welcome Angela! We're glad to have you on the team. If you haven't already, you might want to join the Emotional Eaters team, too. I'm a member of it and I'm also on the Dealing with Depression team. SparkPeople teams can really give you a lot of support and encouragement, plus advice if you ask for it.

It kind of sounds like someone you love might have given you an ultimatum. I'm no expert, and your goal may be doable, but in order to reach it by the beginning of the summer, I think you'll really have to focus (I'm not a leader or a coach, though, so that's just my opinion).

You've got a good idea about the small goals. I've heard people say that small goals are best - you could reward yourself with something you enjoy after each 5 lb. loss, for example. (not food, of course, but give yourself a manicure or something).

The Nutrition Tracker will become your new best friend. If you track everything you eat and drink every day, it will help you see what you need to change in order to get good results. People also find the fitness tracker to be an invaluable tool. There are exercise videos for every fitness level under the "Healthy Lifestyle" tab on the orange toolbar near the top of the page. There's a wealth of information of the site, so take your time, look around and start off by making one or two healthy changes at a time and when those become a habit, make another change.

You may want to consider trying Spark Coach since you have such a fixed timetable. I haven't done it, yet, but I've heard good things about it. I think they give you the first two weeks free so you can try it and then if you like it, you pay a nominal fee after that. It's pretty new, I think, because everything on SparkPeople is free. But Spark Coach sounds great because one of the coaches gives you one-on-one help and advice to meet your goals. It's just a thought - you may be able to do it on your own - many, many people have. Check out INDYGIRL's Spark Page for some big-time motivation and inspiration!

Post often and let us know if we can help you in any way. It's great to have you on the team!

i tend to overwhelm myself by placing huge expectations on myself when what i really should do is make small goals that i know i can achieve.

Hi Darla and welcome! I've found it really helpful to be very active on the team message boards. I'm a member of the Dealing with Depression Team, as well as Emotional Eaters. There are teams for just about any area of interest you have or for any challenge you're facing. It's a great way to get support, encouragement and motivation.

When you get a chance, you may want to set up your own Spark Page. That way, other members can "friend" you, leave encouraging comments on your page, and send you a Spark Goodie now and then. It's a good way to connect with others.

Let us know if there's any way we can help you. We're glad to have you on the team!

Hey Everyone!
This is my first week on this plan. I love all the pages on this site. Need to lose 50 lbs. I can honestly say I've started this journey many times and get discouraged before I lose more than 10. Hopefully I can keep in mind that this is my lifestyle change, get off the sweets and nothing carbs that I so love.

Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

Darla
