These are the meanings of clinical terms such as "obese", and they are based on your Body Mass Index (BMI).

The following are BMI classifications for women:

anorexia, less than 17.5
underweight, less than 19.1
in normal range, 19.1 - 25.8
marginally overweight, 25.8 - 27.3
overweight, 27.3 - 32.3
very overweight or obese, greater than 32.3
severely obese, 35 - 40
morbidly obese, 40 - 50
super morbidly obese (SMO), 50 - 60

I was SMO when I started SparkPeople, and have now improved my BMI to morbidly obese.

To find out what your BMI is, click on SP's BMI calculator; dif BMI charts have slightly different classifications, but this one is simplified and easy to use:

to
r_bmi.asp

Think of the clinical terms as a thermometer. Does a thermometer define you, or tell you your worth or value? No of course not; it's simply A TOOL that tells you your temperature. Whether you use BMI numbers, or the clinical terms that come from your BMI, it's all a tool, a measurement, a description of where you're at. You need to acknowledge where you're at, and move on to where you want to be.

I started out with a BMI of 62+. Now I'm 43.7. I'm proud of that! I'm cute now but I'm getting cuter every day, baby.

There's no going back. We all have to start where we are. Denying where we are, or how bad it is, is counterproductive. No matter how bad the clinical term is, we all have to start where we are because that's where we begin. Think of the thermometer: what's the reading on your thermometer at the present time? If you don't like the label obese, morbidly obese, or SMO, that's okay because YOU CAN CHANGE IT. You're in the right place to Make The Change.

I personally find the BMI classifications helpful and encouraging on my Journey; when I move out of one BMI into a healthier one, like peeling layers of the onion, I celebrate the change. I look at the next lower classification as my next target. I am looking forward, for example, to becoming "obese". Which is much, much better than super morbidly obese, or morbidly obese.

Start where you; and target what the next smaller classification is. Then make Intentional Living baby steps to get there.

I dislike that word so much. Use it as a motivator and not what defines you! emoticon

Hi! Every website I have checked says I'm obese too. :( such a horrible word but I'm going to get out of that category! Its nice to see that other people are trying, sometimes I feel like the only overweight and hungry person out there. I hope this works for us all we deserve better! Best wishes! !!!!

Hey guys, thanks for all the encouraging remarks. I have to get in the habit of fighting the urge to eat and settle in my recliner for an hour or two. I know that I need to become more active (I refuse to follow this statement wth a but...) and I plan to do just that.

Gotta do this!!

Hi NC Team, I'm ready and I'm eager to lose the weight. According to my first page, if I'm dilligent and mindful, I can get to my goals in less than a year. I read a page of my medical record when I was seen by a doctor in 2008 and I was just shocked to read that back then (4 years ago) the doctor had labeled me as an OBESE patient!! What in the world would he call me now I thought? I need some help and I'm here to also help someone else if I can. emoticon

Gotta do this!!
