Hi, you have come to a great site for both exercise and healthy eating. It is the first successful program I found in more than 60 years of "dieting". Remember, "diets" end, but healthy eating goes on forever!
I lost 50 lbs. in just over 1 year and have kept it off for nearly 4 years. First time I have ever done that.
When I started I could not walk for 5 minutes due to a bad knee and bad hip. My husband encouraged me to do 5 minutes at a time and now it is not unusual for me to get 2 hrs. of exercise in a day. (I'm retired)
I cook from scratch and know it is time consuming, but do the best that you can. Learn to cut up a big salad that will last for 3 or 4 days. Do batch cooking where you can either freeze or use at a later date. Be sure to try some of the Spark Recipes, especially those for the crockpot. I think that is great for busy moms.
We are all here to help, so give us a holler when you need us.

Welcome to the team, I' a coleader of this team, so let me know if you need any help.

I know the SP program teaches 10 minute workouts can be done, but I would say if you are getting that kind of workout even from 5 minutes at a time, I would definitely count it. Aim for 30 minutes daily for a least 3 days a week. Every little bit you can do does make a difference!

Well, one of the Team Leaders or Co-Leaders could probably answer more accurately, but I think a brisk walk to and from school counts! I'm not really sure if it's necessary to do the 10 minutes at once - I've been doing it that way, but I'm not sure you have to.

Actually, the Spark Streak Challenge I'm doing had me do at least 10 minutes or more for at least 5 days of the first week. Now, I'm on week 2 and they've had us add "extra" things, like parking farther away from the store, when doing the laundry, use the laundry detergent bottle as a "dumb bell" to raise and lower for some arm toning, and while in the kitchen, do some pushes to and from the counter tops. They had a lot more suggestions than these, but those are the ones I'm doing. The idea is just to sneak a little more exercise into your day.

Hope that helps (and like I said, if I'm wrong, then hopefully one of the Leaders will correct me).

ps - you sound so busy that I bet you're already getting more exercise than you think!

oh wow. thanks for the tips! I didn't know 10 mins a day would count at all. I'm constantly overwhelmed with all of the "you have to work out an hour a day and you can't eat anything" stuff that I hear all of the time. I am very inactive yet i have 2 kids, a husband, and i'm going to school so i'm constantly going somewhere and doing something. I don't have time to make everything from scratch or the money to buy everything fresh and organic. and I definetly don't have time (or the desire yet!) to work out everyday. so it's refreshing to hear that 10 mins a day actually makes a difference. I have a question though, at school I parked further away from class than usual and it tool 5 mins to get to class and 5 mins to get back to the car walking briskly. does that count as 10mins worth of exercise? or do i need to be drenched in sweat? to tell the truth i was breathing hard when i got to the car lol THANK YOU SO MUCH for responding to my post! this is so refreshing to know that i'm not alone out here. emoticon

Hi Tia, and welcome! I'm a noncommitter who has never exercised either, but being active in the Spark "Community," and especially in the team "Dealing with Depression" (that's always been my struggle), has really given me a lot of motivation. It's very inspirational to post and get encouragement and then to reply to others posts and give encouragement to them. It helps me remember I'm not alone in this.

I actually committed to the 10-minute a Day Spark Streak Exercise Challenge back at the beginning of September. You wouldn't think 10 minutes would make a difference, but it does!
It's something I could actually do, it's not overwhelming, and most of the time now I find myself exercising more than 10 minutes. SparkPeople has free exercise videos under the "Healthy Lifestyle" tab near the top of the page. The first one I did was a seated 11-minute cardio workout. I really didn't believe that I could get cardio results sitting down, but I did! And they have videos for every fitness level.

Another thing that's helped me immensely is the Nutrition Tracker. I keep track of everything I eat and drink every day and that's been an eye-opener - it's helped me figure out what I'm doing right, and how and what I need to change.

For more motivation, join several teams that interest you, and be very active on the message boards; also check out the Motivation section under the Healthy Lifestyles tab and also Success Stories under the "Community" tab.

Again, welcome, and good luck on your fitness journey! emoticon emoticon
