Helloooooooooo, Della! Welcome to the team! I hadn't known about CSO, either, and I'm sorry you're dealing with it.

Oh, and p.s. - I signed up for WDW 2012 today! emoticon

Hi everyone and thanks for the welcomes emoticon

I'm sorry, I should have explained more about CMO (Craniomandibular Osteopathy) as I didn't know it existed until Apollo was diagnosed with it in January of this year! It is an inherited disorder that is found alot in the Westie breed. (The mother and the father must be carriers of the gene that causes it.) It is basically extra bone that grows on the jaws and occasionally the front legs that can cause major issues. Unfortunately our puppy, Apollo, could be the poster dog for it. The xrays were definitely hard to look at. He had not only alot of extra bone on his jaw but on his front legs as well. The main problem is that if the extra bone grows over the jaw joint it could leave them unable to open their jaws, which makes eating hard! On the legs it could cause issues with their knee joints (not sure if that's the correct terminology!!). It can be very painful, especially in the jaw, and make eating tough. So until Apollo stops growing he is on daily pain meds. He has extra strength pain meds when it gets really bad. We take it day by day and enjoy him as we really don't know what the future will bring. There is nothing they can do for it (like removing the extra bone) but some of the extra bone can be reabsorbed by them as they grow. We just make sure he is pain free and comfortable.

Here is a link to one article on it: www.westiefoundation.org/newsletter/

Right now he is a typical westie puppy and chewing everything and anything he can! It is hard to believe that he has anything wrong with him at all. I will post a picture of both Apollo and Watson on my sparkpage. CMO has also been called Lion Jaw because their face will have a wider look to it. We noticed early that Apollo had a different look to his face (we called it his 'Joker' - from Batman - smile!) but we had no idea that CMO existed. Even the vets didn't catch it with his first 4 visits to them!! I must give kudos out to the fabulous breeder we adopted Apollo from, she has been a pleasure to work with on this and didn't just turn her back on us!!

I will try to read and catch up on the group in the next few days as this seems like a fabulous group ! Oh and I found out about this group from my Sparkfriend Catiatm's page emoticon

Make today a brilliant day emoticon

Hi Della! So glad you found us! How did you find us?

Hmmm... I don't know what CMO is! I thought I knew everything about Westies but I don't know that one. Fill us in, please!

I have one Westie who is a dear! His name is Buddy and he's almost 4. DH and I are both retired and all our children are grown and gone.

Terriers are the best, and Westies reign!

Hi everyone! I had no idea there was a group for westie people here emoticon I am the proud food giver to Watson and Apollo. Apollo is 6 months old and Watson is a very distinguished 7 years old. We have had westies be a part of our family for many years and love them so, even if they are challenging at times! I also have 3 kids and I'm not sure who gets into trouble more some days, the kids or the dogs!

I forgot to mention that our little Apollo has CMO. Does anyone else have a westie that has this? Right now we are taking it day by day with him and his medication seems to be working well. We can only hope it continues and he can reach his full grown stage in good health!

I look forward to getting to know everyone and their furkids!
