Welcome NUM1GOOFYMOM,

I have been diabetic (type 2)for somewhere near ten years. My doctor sent me to a two day American Diabetic Association approved two day class when I first was diagnosed. It was the best thing I have ever done. I was even a nurse and worked frequently with pregnant diabetics but I found it still helpful. If your insurance doesn't pay still consider going.
Get a monitor and learn how to use it. Hang out on the web and never trust anything until you validate it by another reputable source. Work hard and you will do well...and maybe more important, when you don't do so well, just keep on trying.

Cheers,
grehoundks

Welcome. I just learned about my diabetes on August 11. So I can definitely understand being stunned. If your insurance covers it, you should look into a diabetes education class (they are pretty awesome from what I understand...mine didn't cover it though). One of the first things I did when I was diagnosed was get information. I absorbed as much as I could to learn about my disease. I bought books, surfed the web, talked to the doctor, other diabetics, etc.

I changed the way I eat pretty drastically. I started counting carbs and writing down daily what I eat. I cut out sugars, sodas (I still have some diet but not as much) and cut the carbs considerably. I use the Calorie King's Fat & Carb counter when I am out and about.

I also incorporated daily exercise into my routine. Prior to that, I wasn't really into exercise. I joined a gym that has a circuit and committed myself to going 5 days a week. I also committed myself to walking each day at least a mile. The important thing is getting exercise.

If you ever have any questions or need someone to talk to, let me know. I am by no means an expert, but I understand what you are going through.

"The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who donít want it badly enough."-- Randy Pausch

Don't ever let the brick walls be your excuse for not reaching your goals! Find your way around, over, under, or through the brick wall and keep on keeping on!! You can do this!

I just found out that I am diabetic and I am a little stunned. Thought I would join the group to look for idea's on food or whatever. I don't even know how to eat yet.... I have only known for about 12 hours. Anyone with suggestions - I welcome them. It is going to be great to communicate with everyone who understand.
