Welcome to the team and welcome to SP. Having diabetes is difficult enough, but adding to that gastroparesis complicates it further. You're not alone; 1 in 25 people in the US have some degree of gastroparesis and diabetic gastroparesis affects about 20 million people around the world.

The first thing I can tell you is the GP diet is low fat and low fiber. Your best bet is to find a nutritionist to help you. Also, you should look into finding a GI specialist who knows what gastroparesis is and how to treat it. They should be performing a gastric emptying scan (as well as other tests) to find how bad the condition is, as this will help them decide if a change in diet may be enough or if you will need some other treatments.

Also, be sure to keep good control over your blood sugar. Just as diabetic neuropathy can affect the hands and feet, it also affects the digestive tract. Keeping blood sugar under control can help minimize the chance of further damage or progression of GP. This is why working with knowledgeable doctors and a nutritionist will be of great help.

If you have any questions, please let us know. We will do our best to help.

I am 58, diabetic (oral medication so far, but my dr wants me to start something inject-able) and recently found out I have gastroparesis. I have had symptoms for a while, but my doctor did not make the connection. Found out from a recent routine gi screening. Got little direction from the gastrologist, just that I needed to be on a low residue diet and to try the internet to find one. See you in a couple of months.
