Hi my name is Emily and although I have been a member of SP for years, I had no idea that this group existed. I'm so happy to have found it! I have struggled with my weight for years but 3 years ago moved to Mexico and really hit an all time low (or high.) I began drinking about a year before the move but once I was living in a country where liquor (mescal) is cheaper than bottled water, it really became a problem. I am the type that drinks when she's happy and I sure have been happy with our new life south of the border. I enjoy drinking and it doesn't cause problems in my marriage or make me do things I regret, but when I look back at my tracker, it's clear that alcohol has hindered my weight loss efforts in the past. I would like to get to a point where I can just drink socially and not be drinking vodka out of a plastic bottle on a Tuesday night. I have a 9-5 but am writing a book about my life in Mexico on the side and I frequently use the excuse that I need alcohol to get my creative juices flowing. It was not uncommon for me to start drinking at breakfast and then write and drink until the weekend was over.

Towards the end of March I began getting physically sick at the mere sight of alcohol and I think that this was my body telling me, "We've had enough! Put down the shot glass!!" Since then I started fresh with a new plan to work out in the morning and only drink on Saturdays after 5 pm. Working out in the morning has made a world of difference because it makes me feel so accomplished and proud for the entire day, and then in the evenings I have little desire to drink because I know if I do, I won't feel well enough to wake up the next day at 4am.

Since April 1st I have had 12 days AF, including today. I feel so much better physically and mentally and have lost 16 lbs. in the last couple of weeks as a result. Again, I'm really glad I have found this group so that I can discuss this with people who truly understand.

Thank you for the warm welcome. :) And I had my first challenge last night when my husband and I went out to a bluegrass music festival. I had one small cocktail and that's it. Not too shabby for me!

You found a great team!

AF is an alcohol free day
MOD is a moderate (in control day) 1 or 2 (maybe 3) drink day
DD is a drunk day

We have 2 main threads we use.
A chat thread - which we just changed the name of - I think its AF or MOD post here
Just look for the most popular thread
And we have a challenge thread - 2013 April Challenge
You can post just AF, MOD, DD or post what you drank (1 glass of wine, or a bottle), your exercise, etc.

This month 2 other threads were added - "April Goals" and "30 or 20 AF days" which ended up the same as our regular challenge thread.

So jump in! Looking forward to getting to know you

xoxo elle~

Hello everyone -- I am SO happy to have found this group! Much as I hate to admit it to myself, my current weight problem is overwhelmingly due to excess alcohol consumption and the food choices I make once I start sipping. (Wine is my vice -- I really don't drink much by way of beer or liquor.) I can be very Jekyll-and-Hyde about my drinking.... some days I won't have any wine and won't think anything of it, other days I'll share a bottle with my husband and be satisfied with those two glasses, and other days I'll have...well, a lot more than that.

I lost a lot of weight about 10 years ago and looking back over my old food journals, I noticed that drank very little during that time. So... I know I can do it again. What I need most is motivation and persistence -- two things that don't come all that naturally to me. (Darn it!) Anyway, I am very glad to have found an online group of people who share a similar challenge, as it's not one that is easy to talk about with my immediate friends or family.

BTW, I'd really like to participate in some of the challenges -- can anyone point me to some guidelines? (I saw some codes like AF, MOD, and DD on some of the other threads and would like to know exactly what they mean.)

Thanks!!

Hello. I am new to Sparkpeople and also new to this group. I really need to find a way to cut out the alcohol completely. I eat well and exercise however I have a really bad habit of drinking wine or a cocktail while cooking dinner. I've gone through many steps in trying to figure out why I do it. I thought maybe I'm depressed or maybe not happy or maybe just because I like to drink while I cook a big meal. I finally realized I have that glass of wine because I'm so hungry. It is the easiest way to relax, cook and finish making the meal. Major problem with that is one glass of wine goes to two during dinner then I feel relaxed and over eat dessert. Then the next day I'm kicking myself because all the work I have done and pounds I have lost come right back in one night. So disappointing. Now I have to figure out a good substute for my bad habit. I'm hoping this group may point me in a good direction. :)

Hi! I'm joining this team because I need to make a change. I love my wine. After a long day, it's easier for me to unwind with a glass of wine than it is to do something else like do yoga or take a bath. But, I end up losing track of how much I drank and then I feel like crap the next day. So, I'm looking forward to making a new me!

Hi My name is Carol. I'm new to SparkPeople, too. So you might say I'm getting started on joint journeys. I'm not really making friends yet, but something I read on this forum struck me. If I may quote GOODIEB from her entry on this forum in mid-February:
"This team is just what I need to stay focused. Although I don't know anyone personally here, the process of acknowledging how much I drink and when I drink instead of ignoring it or minimizing it has been helpful to me. Reading about the fact I'm not the only one struggling with this has also made me feel less shameful about it. "

Hi everyone! I joined this team a while ago but to be frank - I haven't really tried to be AF until now.

So with the diet/exercise/alcohol regimen - for the most part, dietarily - I behave; I don't eat a lot of fried foods/sweets; I eat a lot of vegetables and am a big advocate of eating minimally processed foods. I exercise regularly - I've even run 5 miles on occasion with the hangover from hell (LMAO!); but alcohol has been the one thing I've not really tried to get under control.

So here's what "done it" (LOL)...

I have to be honest...I enjoy drinking...a LOT. I'm one of those people that enjoys the taste of a fine wine, or a well shaken cocktail. I'm not one to do "shots" or who's goal is just to "get trashed" - I just enjoy the drinking experience, because usually, when I'm drinking, I'm also being social and in the company of good people.

I don't want to give it up completely, but I realize that at times it has very negative impacts on my life that aren't so obvious (and some that are - like the fact that it's 8 million times more difficult to lose weight when I'm consuming 500+ calories in booze). Alcoholism also runs in my family - so I try to be mindful of addictions and decide to cut back at times, when I feel like I'm spiraling out of control or that I'm becoming dependent.

The most recent episode that made me decide to "put the brakes on" - I went out with a friend of mine a few weeks ago, and there was a bartender who was being extremely liberal with the alcohol. EXTREMELY. I knew that me and certain alcohols "don't get along well" (tequila, anyone!) but whatever he "gave me" (because he was giving us drinks emoticon ) I drank. At some point, my emotions spiraled out of control, and I ended up crying in the middle of the bar over a failed relationship that I just got out of. Unfortunately, this is not the first time that alcohol has set me off like this. When I'm happy and drinking - I'm the happy giggly girl at the bar that everyone wants to hang out with. But if I have negative feelings that I'm trying to suppress - eventually, if I'm drinking - alcohol makes it worse.

That was the night I decided to be AF for a while. I know, realistically, that in a month, I'm going to want to have a few drinks (my birthday is at the end of April). I don't want "bad lexie" to keep showing her face, though, so I need to find better ways to cope. Not to mention it's sooooo much easier to drop the weight when I'm not drinking 3 martinis!

Thanks for reading...lexie emoticon

Hi, I'm new to this team. Going to go AF. I have to, so tired of feeling sick and tired everyday. I can put away a pint of vodka a night. That's a lot of calories. Then just like I feel today, I eat junk hoping to feel better. So today is my day one. I look forward to the support of this team and as I get better I will support others.

Hello hello.

I found it absolutely necessary to join this team as alcohol is the one thing that I'm finding difficult to drop. I was able to drop the fast food. I don't bat an eye with the burgers. But when it's poker night and someone buys a round of shots for the entire table, I can't refuse! Given I have thrown away all of the liquor I kept in my house (a big deal for me, lol), I'm still allowing myself to give in to little shots. This is coming from someone who literally drank every night for a month due to stress.

I think that once I can kick this alcohol habit of mine, I'll be good to go.

Good luck to all!

Hi everyone :). I am 23 years old, I started drinking really heavily when I turned 19, after a year of sobriety. It got really bad for awhile and led to me gaining a lot of weight. I don't even like drinking now. I think I need support from like minded people in order to actually cut it out for good. Soo, here I am. :)

Hi everyone! Although I have been on this 'team' for a few weeks, I can't see that I've introduced myself. I am a 37 year old mom, wife, etc. living in Colorado.I started drinking when I was about 15. For as long as I can remember I have really enjoyed the taste of alcohol but enjoyed more the freedom I felt that it gave me. I was painfully shy when I was younger and I had a lot of family trauma as a youngster and drinking was a way I learned to cope with the feelings about myself and the world, and my place in it. Over the years my drinking has led to even more trauma for me by allowing myself to be put into dangerous situations, risky behavior, and all of those other life destroying things that alcohol abuse can lead to.

This team is just what I need to stay focused. Although I don't know anyone personally here, the process of acknowledging how much I drink and when I drink instead of ignoring it or minimizing it has been helpful to me. Reading about the fact I'm not the only one struggling with this has also made me feel less shameful about it.

Thanks to everyone for your support and welcome to everyone who is here to be part of it all. emoticon

Hello everyone! I am new to this group but not SP. I've been sparking for a couple of years now, losing a total of 30 lbs. I've been in maintenance for awhile and have decided to start eating 'clean' which also means cutting back on the alcohol.

I used to drink 2-3 glasses of wine a night and several bottles on the weekend. I mostly drink to de-stress and for some reason it actually gives me energy to get things done around the house. I don't really have a problem with snacking when I drink too much but instead my bulimia rears its ugly head after too many drinks. Under normal circumstances I've learned to control the purging but I start stressing about all the calories I'm consuming and lose control.

Anyway, I just turned 40 and am ready for a completely healthy lifestyle. I've started weaning out the processed food and have been making most things by scratch. I've also started juicing which I love!

I've only been AF for 2 days but am really hoping that I can keep it under control now!

Hello everyone,

I'm Jay, 25 years old, electric engineer from The Netherlands.

Like most people that work construction related, I enjoy having a beer every now and then, mostly in the weekends, I rarely drink during work days. Beer is like chips to me, it's impossible to have just one, and after several beers I also need something to snack on, so beer in general is not good for me when trying to lose weight.

This is my first week of making a change, I decided to turn my life around last weekend.
Instead of having a bunch of beers that sunday, I decided to have one glass of whiskey, the glass lasts longer and whiskey doesn't make me grab snacks either.

This weekend, it's saturday 11.47 PM as I'm writing this, and I've been "AF" as you guys call it all weekend, I've had nothing but water to drink since... well, monday.

So far, so good. :)

Jeroen

Wow! I am so grateful and amazed to find this team - so many of the entries resonate! I joined SP a few weeks ago and in journaling recognize a common theme - too much wine ,too many times a week= junk eating and excess calories! I too have gone back and forth on the addiction issue, even went AF for a few years but the black n white view never really fit. I even had myself assessed by a therapist and she described it as more like eating too much jjunk food rather than addiction. So I am trying to be more mindful of how often and how much I drink with the goal of cutting way down. I hope this team will be an added support thanks!

Hi, I am new to SparkPeople, just signed up yesterday.
I have two great sons and a great husband. I am a 41 year old SAHM, probably with too much time on my hands (both kids have been in full time school for years).
I do worry sometimes but then i can go for weeks at a time AF.
I was never overweight until after my kids were born. Now I'm trying to lose weight and there are two things getting in my way. No motivation to exercise, and then wine, and then my wanting bad food choices after I've had the wine. So actually thats 3 :)

Hi ,My name is Charlene
New to the team but not to SP. I have been back since My Birthday on January 2 . I have actually been doing really good this time.

I have been looking for a team like this for quite a while . Lot's of people are just so judgemental about people who drink. I have a family that are all drinkers and thats what we do on family get togethers . It's really hard not to drink at these functions.

Since it's winter I have cut back a lot but not enough and I am looking for a team that understands and knows what I am going through . God knows summer is gonna come really soon and that is where my biggest problem is .

Over the years I managed to go from Budweiser , then Bud Light, Now Budweiser Select 55 and that has helped a lot but I can pound a 12 pack of 55s in 5 hours if I am on a roll lol..

Well anyway its nice to meet you all and hope to get to know everyone

Charlene
