Hi Sharon, Welcome to the team. The pain is something that really controls and limits us. I fought with my doctor about exercising because it just made me hurt more. But after he sent me to physical therapy and they started me doing exercises, I found that after a while the pain got much more tolerable. There are times that i to do not feel up to doing the exercises but I force myself to go anyway because i know that they well help me. Getting started is the hardest thing. For me it took my doctor telling me that If I did not start exercising that I would soon be bed ridden. Then I thought that the PT was trying to kill me. But 9 months later I am doing so much better and am in so much less pain.

I really recommend that you have your doctor send you to a physical therapists so they can give you the right exercises. Somethings can just hurt you more.

Hi - I have been with Spark People since April. I have many issues with arthritis and one of them the AS. It seems that everyday, there is always something that comes up. Today is pain down my back C6 and on. I try to exercise and then I get smashed back down with the pain and stiffness. I was doing well for a while. Walking at least 5 days a week and doing exercises from Spark People and then I started this back pain. I just cannot seem to get started again. It has been almost two weeks. I am hope that this team will inspire me and I the team. Thanks for being here and I will check in everyday even if I cannot move. :) Thanks for listening! Sharon

Hi Lester. I am sorry that I did not see this before. Swimming is something that i also can not do. Even in a pool heated to almost 90 degree, it makes my joints hurt really bad. I read somewhere that AS is not helped by swimming and it seems to aggravate it. But then I know some people who it helps. I think for me it is the not really the temperature of the water but the cooling affect it has when you expose your skin to the air after wards. It causes my to have chills and then everything locks up.

Wanted to introduce myself. My name is Lester, I'm 59, and was recently diagnosed with AS. Today I went to the gym and wanted to try swimming. I heard that it's great for arthritis. Well, I couldn't do it. The first kick I made with my left leg caused such pain in my back (left side) that I had to quit. Then I went and walked on the treadmill for 15 minutes. I was so disappointed. But at least I tried.
