Nice to meet you Miechi and best wishes to your son as he signs his enlistment papers. He is a "True American Hero" so please do tell him thanks for his decision to serve our country. It takes a lot of "moxie" to join up during war time.

Good luck to you on your spark journey and best wishes on meeting your goals for weightloss/fitness.

Hi! My name is Ginger and my oldest son is in the Air Force stationed in Alaska. He has served two tours in Afghanistan. He has also just recently received a pilot slot and will be retraining as a pilot on the C-130, "The Herk". His current postion is a flight engineer. He goes to officer school in November 2010 and will start his pilot training in May 2011. He will finally be close to home for awhile. Looking forward to spending time with all of you who understand ups and downs of a military mother as well as losing weight.

Hi There my name is Janis, I just found this team today. My one and only child, David is in the Marines.
He has been in since Aug 10, 09. His Pds is Hawaii with the 2/3 in H&S. He is not yet 20. This has been very difficult, I think mostly because we had him after 16 yrs of marriage. Even though we knew from an early age that this is the direction his life would take it has not been without some major adjustment issues.

Anna, I know I replied to this but apparently didn't make sure it posted before moving on.

First and foremost never worry about venting or how long it is! You never know that somewhere you have offered an answer to someone.

We have become so used to instant communications that we "forget" where the kids are and it isn't always an option. There are times when even mail or packages can't be sent. Just keep the lines of communication open you may be right, hopefully once he is stateside he will be able to understand that your grandchilds health is just as important, if it means a change so be it. AND I do hear you about worry and being freaked out, feel free to come on over and let us keep you company through all this.

hello everyone my name is anne and i have five grown adult children and nine grandchildren. my youngest son is currently deployed in Afghanistan. He's been there since last july, and hopefully his unit will come home as planned this july coming up. I worry about him constantly, and always pray for him and all the soldiers in his unit to remain safe until they are "boots on the ground" back in the good old U.S.A.
I worry so because I have only heard from him twice since he has been deployed and his unit is doing mine sweeping and road reconstruction. He has had more contact with his wife and two children so I know he is safe, but moms always are concerned about our kids,no matter how young or old. A couple of fellows in his unit did get injured though by an ied about a month ago and that sort of freaked me out for a while. Talking about my son with his siblings is a touchy subject since they are all convinced he should be able to contact me more often, even though I say, maybe but were not over there so we don't really know what conditions he is under. I do send letters, cards, etc but have only gotten one letter back from him. I'm concerned that he might be angry with me as we had planned on my grandchildren staying with me during his deployment, but after two months this arrangement fell through due to my granddaughter dealing with emotional issues that could not be resolved in my state therfore she had to return home with her brother to receive family counseling at home provided by the military along with her step-mom who was going through severe anxiety attacks over my sons deployment.I myself had also become disabled due to medical problems which was making it somewhat difficult to properly care for the children. I'm so hoping that not hearing from my son meansdoesn't mean he's disappointed in the change in the child care arrangements. The only way I'll know is after he returns home, in the meantime I try to keep myself busy with spark, and walking and keeping up with what's going on over there by reading news articles on the internet. thanks for letting me vent with such a long introduction emoticon emoticon

Hello everyone!

I just joined this team tonight because our MOMS team is no longer going to be so I was referred to you. I will miss our MOMS team but so excited there is another team for military families on SP.

My son, Jason..who is 23, is in the Marines. He just returned from Afghanistan 2 weeks ago and just arrived home this past Monday night.

He has been in the Marines for 2 yrs now so unless he re-enlists, he only has 2 yrs to go. I am praying that he will make the right decision there.

It is so wonderful to have him home. Especially for Mother's Day. Actually it doesn't matter what day it is..I'm just so thankful to have him here!

I have 2 other children. My daughter Melissa is 20 and has a beautiful daughter named Braylee who is 21 months. My only grandchild and yes, she is spoiled! She lives here in Owensboro and works for US Bank Home Mortgage. Ironically, that's where I worked for 15 yrs before having to quit 2 yrs ago and apply for disability. I have Fibromyalgia among other things.

My oldest son is Ryan and he is almost 33. He just moved to Manchester, NH 2 weeks ago. He is a sales manager for the Manchester Monarchs Hockey team.

I am a Christian and have been so blessed by God! I give Him the glory for everything in my life. I could not make it a day without Him. oh..I also have a little rat terrier named Zoe.

I look forward to getting to know all of you!

Karen

Hi everyone:

I have a son who is a Marine Captain. His wife was a marine also, but she is now just a stay at home mom.
He has been a Marine for 18 years. They have 6 children who were all born in different states.
My son recently was awarded A bronze star from his last deployment in Iraq. It was his second deployment there. His vehicle that he was riding in
was blown up but fortunately the vehicle was one of the new ones that withstood the blast. 12 hours later he was in another vehicle and another blast hit them. So within 12 hours he was hit twice. I told him God was with him because he needed to come home to those 6 children, and everyone was praying for his safety back home. He returned home with all his men under him, from that deployment, safe and sound, in September. He is now state side, and is stationed in NC. He is a Major select and we are very proud of him.

My second son is a Warrant Officer in the Army and he is a helicopter pilot. He was in the Navy as a Corpman for 8 years and then left the Navy and went into the Army. He has been to Iraq twice. He is now state side and is stationed in WA State.
He was married to a Navy Corpman and she also left the Navy and went into the Army. She was stationed in Iraq during the heavy fighting in Falusia, not sure about the spelling. He and his first wife are divorced and he has remarried to a woman who's father was a retired military officer. She is a stay at home mom and they have a daughter.
We are very proud of him and his ex-wife.

My oldest son was in the Marine Corp., but developed
diabetis and had to leave. He became a State Policeman. His wife is in the Navy. She is a Lt.
in the Navy. She has just been deployed to San Diego, so he has transferred with her. She is a Supply officer on a ship. She has not been in battle, thank goodness. They have no children.

In his job as a policeman,
sometimes the streets of the USA are more dangerous than those in a foreign country.
We are very proud of he and his wife.

We pray for their safety every day and for all our troops and our policemen.

My husband was a Marine also, He was in the Viet Nam war and was wounded there, so we are what you would call, a very Military family.
We, his family, are very proud of him, and he is definately proud of his sons and daughter-in-laws.

I am also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW where my husband and sons are also members.
We are a very active group of ladies who do a lot for the troops and our community.

My husband is very active in our local VFW, where he
is very much involved.

That's my family in a nutshell.

Hugs and blessings to all,
Gayle

Hello,
I'm new to this team. I've been "sparking" for 2 years. I have a husband, four adult children, 3 grandchildren and a dog. For myself and for them I never want to be a size 22 again. I've been "entertaining" those last 8-10 pounds for a couple of years:) My Son is a Marine:

This is a first for me. Not sure where to begin. My oldest son has been in the Navy for 3 years and is now awaiting deployment(most likely, March). I am still at the stage where I walk into his room and asssume he is doing homework. He went in right after brilliantly finishing high school, but not getting into the UC's he wanted to.
At the moment, one of my twins, talks about following him in, the other one has been 'DQ-ed' due to a medical condition(hit by a car at 5 that could have cost him his life...but a kidney insted)..
I'm a single person with a old hippie soul. So very very proud of my son, but still sort of ...in shock by it all.
Not dealing with this well. Not sure where to start. But maybe this is....thanks

Hi Peg . . . here's another more 'formal' WELCOME to the team coming your way from Arkansas!
emoticon
Sure glad you found us on SparkPeople.
All of us military Moms need a close support group of UNDERSTANDING Moms, Wives, Girlfriends, etc. that we can talk to when things get too stressful for us and our loved ones.

At the risk of embarrassing your Son :) . . . please do let him know you've got a bunch of dedicated military women who are praying for him and send him our love and thanks for everything he's doing for us and this great country. That should put a smile on his face . . . imagining what kinds of geeky-old ladies you're hanging out with these days. Ha Ha Ha.
Just don't tell him there are some very beautiful young wives too in this group. Keep him guessing!

Army Mom for 14 years now. PROUD to be so for sure.
Been on Sparks for a long time....wanted to be on a team for my sons sake....

James, has been to Iraq twice, and is now in Afghanistan. His wife and 2 babies, almost 2 and 8 mos. are missing him something fierce. I have no address for him yet. He left just before his 34th. birthday last month.....

Hi Nancy! Isn't amazing how much a few simple changes in eating habits can do for you? Besides losing weight, you are helping your body to get healthy. SP has a lot of great recipies as well as adaptive exercises. I'm looking forward to getting to know you.

Hello Everyone!
My name is Nancy and I have a son in the Army. He is not deployed (yet) and loves what he is doing - even though I get stressed out about it at times!

I am hoping to finally lose a significant amount of pounds and inches so the next time we see each other, my son will be able to look at his mom with pride. Exercise is difficult right now due to severe plantar fasciitis but I am happy to say I've lost around 7 pounds just by giving up junk food and mindless eating when I'm not truly hungry.

Can't wait to get to know you all! Have a wonderful day!

I agree with this one being harder than the first deployment. It's hitting me harder for some reason.
My husband is retired Army and was in Saudi the first time. He's a great support for me. (We've been married for almost 1 years.) I wasn't an Army wife for very long.

Hi Lenora and welcome to the team! My name is Karen. My son, Jason is in the army. He finished his 2nd deployment to Iraq in October, has been stationed in Germany since, and will be returning to the states next month (yippee!). For some reason, his second deployment was harder than the first for me. Please know that you have lots of friends and support!

What is your soldier's name so I can put him in my prayer journal. It is a priviledge to pray for our soldiers. We all certainly can understand the emotional roller coaster you are on. Check in frequently and let us know how you are doing.

I am Sunny from Missouri and our 3rd child, Joshua is our Army Kid. He just returned from Germany and is stationed at Walter Reed Army Hospital although the Army sent him to Ft. Bragg for a while for Leadership Training.

Take care, be blessed, and know we will be here for you. Hugs, Sunny

Well said! One of my weird needs I have is the need to read the paper. Morbid as it sounds,I need to read about our soliders who have made the ultimate sacrifice. I need to know their name because to me its so much more than a statistic. It's a son or daughter, mother or father, husband or wife, and so much unrealize potentialthat has been lost. I try to keep them and their families in my prayers as well as our other troops, and everyday I give thanks that I am a blue star mom and not a gold star one.
Your advice about SP is spot on. I have a LONG road to go. Instead of focusing on the almost 100 pounds I have to lose, I remind myself that I've already lost 70. I too set small goals- 10 pounds, or an inch off my waist, or shaving a minute or even 30 seconds off walking a mile. Small goals are realistic and will help make your journey easier and help you celebrate the good choices you are making. As moms we recognize the need to praise our children- we just have to learn to praise ourselves as well!

Hi Nancy. BLUESTARMOM is saying something that we all feel in our hearts - - that we are ALL here for each other! and will be there for you too.

Night and day we pray for each other & each other's loved ones, whether they are deployed or even back stateside. They need the Lord's protection and grace no matter when or where they are!

One of the sayings that refers to Military Moms, goes: OUR HEARTS ARE ON THE LINE.
emoticon

It's true, it's not just our sons or daughters that are deployed - - our hearts are right there with them. emoticon

I just wanted to briefly explain about SparkPeople weight loss goals and methods - - they teach us and strongly emphasize that we are to set up EASY-to-reach goals and to have them graduated in small steps.

For example, when I first started out I wrote as my goal that I wanted (needed!!!) to loose 120 pounds.

That was fine but as it turns out, I didn't budge by even an ounce. Later on, after reading SparkPeople articles I learned to modify my goals so that they would be more achievable.

So I re-wrote the weight loss goals in tiny steps:
example = to loose 10 pounds by (a reasonable date, that would give me plenty of time to loose weight in a healthy non-crash-diet way).

Guess what? After re-working those goals into more manageable proportions I was able to drop the first 10 pounds. Yeah!

As Military Moms we get really worried & upset as we watch every news report and you are even going thru much more difficulties - - so the stress is on "high" in your life. Normally, we emotional eaters turn to "comfort" food to fill in our aching hearts.

Now, you can turn to us - - your Team members - - and we will support you as much as we can to encourage you to make those little changes in your life that will add up to big accomplishments on your weight loss.

May the Lord Bless and Protect your dear Son and surround him with Guardian Angels and good companions. May you always be able to hear from him on a regular basis so that your heart will not be troubled by long silences.

And when those periods of silence come - - may you remember that he is just working, under cover, with his Unit and that they are ok . . . . they just need to keep a very low profile for safety's sake.

emoticon + Prayers,
Margrit

I think one of the best things about this team is that we ALL understand, in a way that other people can't, unless they've had a child deployed. No matter how crazy you think your thoughts are, we can all identify. I know we have several moms with newly deployed troops. Please know that we are here for you. If you ever need someone to talk to, shoot me an email and I'll send you my contact info. God bless each and everyone of you, and God bless and watch over our Troops.

Awe, Nancy, sorry to hear that on top of your son being deployed, you have had other stressors to deal tiwth.

What great advice from Blue Star Mom. Hang in there and keep the faith. He is in God's Hands.

Oh yeah, I can identify! The thing you have to tell yourself is that you have to take care of yourself in order to deal with the rest of life. Exercise is a great stress reliever. When I walk, I say prayers and write letters to my son. I think about what he's going through, and then I figure the least I can do is take steps to make myself healthy. I've lost 75 pounds since the last time I saw him, and I'm hoping that he'll be proud of me too. Focus on one small goal at a time. You'll be surprised at how good it makes you feel.

I am new to the Blue Star Moms. I have a son over in the Sandbox as other have called Iraq.

I need help to get going on my plan to lose weight and exercise. I was fabulous for several weeks, but my husband lost his job, we had terrible hail damage and my son was deployed all within 3 weeks and I fell apart. I need to get going on my food plan and get back to exercising like I know I can do. Can any one identify with feeling that you are going down, but it is very hard to get back up.

Takes getting used to.

I think one of the hardest things is the realization that our roles have shifted. We're so used to being the ones to protect our children, and now the roles are reversed.

Thanks. I know that he will be fine but it is hard to think that I will not be there if he needs me anymore. Hard to let go and not worry.

I'm pretty new to SP and have just found this team. My son is in the Army National Guard and will be leaving in a month to go to Iraq. I am very proud of him and am also worried sick about him all at once. I hope that some of you who have been through it all can help me stay sane. I know that it is going to be harder to stay on track when he deploys since I am an emotional eater but I am determined to do the best I can. One day at a time is all that I can focus on right now.

Hey Sunny, no worries. It's just the situation I find myself in. I only moved to FL to take care of my mother after a pelvic fracture (it was either that or a nursing home and she didn't want to go into a nursing home). Mom passed last July and not only do I miss her terribly but my entire reason for being here is gone. Anyways, I'm so glad to have found this team and get the chance to know you and everyone else.

Welcome newbies...I'm one too

Hi everyone! I recently found this forum. Glad I did! Our son, David, is in the Air Force currently serving in Weisbaden, Germany. Been in 6 yrs now (SSGT). Hubby is retired Air Force (24 yrs) and I myself am a Navy veteran. So it runs in the family! David has a tour in Kuwait and one in Iraq and due to go back to Iraq sometime this year. He specializes in Ground Radio Communications (repairing electronics).

I've lost over 70 lbs and kept it off for over 2 yrs now. Still want to lose another 20, but am proud of how far I've come. I recently turned age 50!! But don't feel that old!

Look forward to getting to know everyone.

No Excuses!!! Never,ever,ever give up!!!

Pam - I am not taking it as whining in the least bit - maybe a little "home sick" but not whining.

Hope this comes together soon for you.

Pam, I haven't seen my son since right before his last deployment. Ditto for my two grandsons who live on the West Coast. My kids are really spread out! My son who lives next door to me is getting married this summer, and hopefully we are going to actually get everyone together for the first time in years, provided Jason can get the weekend off since he'll be training at Ft. Benning. I'm really excited about it.
