You know, I had wls about a year and a half ago. I fell of the wagon about 6 mos ago and started gaining some weight back...not a lot, but enough to freak me out and get my butt back to sparkpeople. I too have always, always had a problem with soda. (we call soda pop or pop just "soda" the west coast..lol). I have found I can still have it...sort of. I really like Cherry Dr. Pepper. So, what another wls person told me to do is switch it to diet, and stir it and stir it until is either flat, or just about flat. I know it sounds gross to drink flat soda, but if you do it till it's almost flat, you will still have a little bit of fizz left, but not too much. Believe it or not, I am actually used to flat soda now. So, as with anything though, this should be done in moderation. We still need to drink water. If you don't like plain water, put some crystal light in it. My nutritionist told me it will still count as drinking water. Good luck!!

Here's a trick that might help: I lused to love Cherry Coke Zero. When I had to give it up I thought the world was coming to an end. I tried the Soda without the fizz (I think it's called Soda Stream?) but it was just nasty. Then I took cherry Koolaid and only used half the water and only used a bit of Splenda. I filled my icecube tray with it. When I really crave a soda, I put some of the icecubes in a glass of water and let it set a few minutes. I get the water, I get the cherry taste so I "kill 2 birds" with one gulp! And when they get soft enough, I can crunch on them as a bonus!

I finally managed to break my pop addiction back in January. It was truly an addiction for me. I had to quit completely cold turkey, I had tried many times to limit and eventually quit with no success. It was a rough two weeks but once past that I rarely miss it. I dont like water really either so I drink alot of crystal light and mix up the flavors so I dont get sick of it. My Dr said no carbination at all. When something gets stuck I take papaya enzyme tablets and within a minute or two all is clear. Im four weeks out from RNY GB. Hope this helps some.

Hi,
sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Thank you for replying to my post I could really use some help kicking the pop habit. Please give me any pointers you may have!!!!! I hate the taste of water and having a hard time trying to drink enough of it. After my surgery I had alot problems with food getting stuck especially meat and the dr who did my surgery said to drink a carbonated soda to help disolve the food if it gets stuck and then it became a habit that I drank pop with my meals. I realize that we are not suppose to drink with our meals , however I always have. I am not so good at breaking habits as I would like to be. I refuse to give up, and am looking for any help or tips I can get to help me kick these habits.
I too use food as a comfort for boredom and anxiety. I am pretty good about watching what I eat though and have gottem good at not eating unless I am hungry. My weight gain has mostly been from pop and sugary drinks.I can still only eat small meals which helps alot but I seen to sabotage myself with pop and sweet tea. uuuuuggggghhhhh it get so frustrationg lol.

congrats on your weight loss! It sounds like you are on the right track just don't give up and keep at it. I know what you mean about temptations being all around us and I have started making a list before I go to the store and stick to it so I won't buy a bunch of junk food. it seems to work great. I too get desperate at time and give in but try to remind myself to eat only small amounts.

Thank you for your support,
shannon

Hi Shannon. I have just returned to SP after being away for a while, but that's another story. I read your post with interest as I used to drink soda all the time too. When I had my surgery, I was told to give it up because of the fizz. So I stopped drinking it. It was the HARDEST thing I ever gave up. Even cigarettes were easier than soda! But I learned that food was a medication for me in a sense. I used food for comfort, to lower my anxiety. Well, I was only fooling myself. All it was doing was adding weight I didn't want. I've lost 69 pounds since December of 2009 and I keep trying. It does get hard at times. Cookies and junk food are all around us. When I shop, I only go down the aisles I need. I don't even look at the goodie aisles! (But I know where they are when desparate!!!) Don't give up. We go through many highs and lows, but you can do this. I will be thinking of you.

HI everyone my name is shannon and I am 8yrs post op and in the last yr I gained 70 lbs in six months. I believe it had to do with the antidepressants i am on, but none the less I am on a mission to lose the weight again. 1 wieghed 260 before surgery and got down to 124 after. I stayed at 124 for 7yrs. I now weight 210 and would like to get back down to at least 140. In the last few weeks I have started using spark and trying to get back on track and
start living a healthier lifestyle and become a stronger individual. My biggest problem would be all the pop I drink so I am trying to cut back and eventually quit drinking pop all together. I don't really care for water but have been making myself drink at least 2 32oz glasses of it a day. I really don't like exercise but am trying to slowly start with at least 10min a day. My current motivation is my daughter who is age 10 and weighs 130. Having grown up and being overweight most of my life I don't want to see have to go through that too. Another reason I want to lose weight is I have lost alot of muscle and have a hard time doing things I used to do. I want to be a stronger and healthier person. I would like to find others who are trying to weight after having had wls. About myself I am 34, a mother of two daughters,my spouse and i have been together 6yrs, I love sewing, crafts, gardening, animals, cooking,an
d reading. I also would like to find some buddies that I can talk to through my journey and share incouragement and tips.
