Hello -
Crazy German Shepherd Lady here. Former FL beachbabe but I currently live in rural TN with one husband and SIX German Shepherds I fondly call "The Kitchen Wolves"...all rescues and beloved house dogs. I co-founded a rescue a while back and though I am no longer involved in the day to day, there seems to be a never ending parade of pointy eared furry ones coming in & getting adopted to happy homes. I've titled three dogs with obedience and two with Search and Rescue certification.

Current six K9 occupants (down from an all time high of 14)
Bella, Maverick, Mick, Rocky, Riley & Parker

Looking forward to getting to know all y'all. I am leaving today for 2 weeks in FL but hope to be more active in the group when I return. emoticon

Hi! I'm Anne Marie and I live in northern California. My walking/running partner is Spikey, a handsome husky. When I rescued him as a pup, the folks at the shelter were calling him Sparky... now that I am on SparkPeople, maybe I should change his name back!

Hi,
My name is Kate and I am the proud mother of Angus the Black Labrador Retriever. Angus just celebrated his 10th birthday on 02-24-16. It is hard to believe as he looks and acts so much younger. He has stayed very healthy due to an omnivorous diet consisting of his favorite fruits and veggies - romaine lettuce, bananas, apples, and carrots. He sets a great example for me. : )

Angus is also a trained and certified therapy dog through the Delta Society (now Pet Partners). He is extremely intelligent, so the training was fairly easy. His gentle nature (and good looks) have always drawn people to him. In addition, he has always preferred the company of humans over his own kind. He has spread so much joy to others in his ten years on this planet. I am so proud to be a part of his life. I have attached his baby picture (so cute!) and also a photo from today. Happy Birthday! : )

Hello! I am not new but I have not introduced myself officially so here goes!
My name is Cherie and I live in what most would call a zoo BUT today I will just talk about the dogs!
1st is Alaska Bean, she is a Siberian Husky that I got when she was just a pup, I wasn't looking for a dog by any means BUT I saw the freckles on her nose and fell in love!

2nd is Maddie, a Boston Terrier. She was SUPPOSED to be my 1st foster dog...well I didn't take to fostering so well. I fell in love and that was the end of it! Maddie found a forever home, right here with us!!

3rd and finally Mollee Anna a beagle and a special beagle she is! She is the reason I met my husband! True story! i was on E Harmony for a few months and I decided it really wasn't for me, so 3 days before my monthly membership was up this man gives me a nudge. I am gonna be real honest here, he didn't look like my type at all! I decided to look through his profile though and see what he was about. Well here is the picture of him with his beagle!! OMG I have been a beagle fan FOREVER so I decided to give him a chance. Bob and I have been married for 5 years now and I love him dearly and I almost declined his nudge but his beagle brought us together!

Hi I am Darlene and I have a 5 pound Yorkie who I adore. I am married and we will celebrate 29 years next month. We have 2 adult children, so really our dog is our baby. His name is Prince Alfredo but I just call him Per Wee! I walk him twice a day and I let my husband walk him at night as I don't like walking at night. I have quite a few pounds to lose, but I am on the way down. We live in Vancouver Washington. Look forward to getting to know New people and their dogs.

Hi, I'm Mara, I live in Australia with my husband, 3 kids and 2 dogs. The dogs, Romy, a GSDxKelpie and Tommy Tomato a miniature Mini-Fox Terrier.the big dog gets me out for regular big walks in a consistent way I never did before having her as a motivator. The little dog gets me to walk those short distances I might otherwise be tempted to drive because although he can't do a huge walk he still needs to get out every day. The last 7 months we have been on a sailing trip and I miss my regular walk with my k9 pals. Although life is great now I can't wait to get back to get back to walking with my fur babies!

I think I can!

Hi, my name is Lois and my chocolate labrador is Duke. We recently moved to Florida and after getting settled in, we (me, my hubby and Duke) are getting more active. Duke really enjoys going for a walk even though he's not crazy about the warmer climate. We're starting off slow, with short walks for now. I plan to put in more miles if the weather gets cooler. He's a great motivator because he gets so excited when I get his collar and leash off the hook. He practically turns inside out with excitement. I don't want to disappoint him.

We give her Rimadyl (It helps with pain and swelling). We only give it to her as needed. It does help though. She acts like it's nothing; sort of like if you have a sore toe but you don't care and you still want to be just as active as normal, but then later you regret it. If she is sore she has gotten used to walking on 3 legs actually. She is something.

Houdini is named that because he is all black and in the dark he disappears. HAHA. Anyways, I love this group! Can't wait to get to know everyone either.

Glad to have you aboard, Jessica! Sounds like you have a good 4 footed support crew to help you! If we can provide extra motivation, answer questions, or just cheer, feel free to join a thread or start one!

Love your dogs' names. Houdini sounds like he'd be great motivation! Slow, easy exercise is a good bet for dysplastic dogs. Is she on glucosamine or anything? It helped with our late senior Newf.
Looking forward to hearing more about you & your crew!

Hi, My name is Jessica and I have two dogs. My youngest dog is a huge black lab (some people think he is a Great Dane). His name is Houdini. He is only 2 years old and loves to go for 2-3 mile jogs with me. He really keeps me motivated to stick with it and not cut corners. Sometimes it seems like he is walking me because his walking pace is almost my sprinting pace. HAHA.

My other dog is 4 and her name is Lyla. She is still young but unfortunately was recently diagnoses with hip displasia. Its still good for her to exercise but if she goes too far her hips get sore and she ends up limping for a few days. She is my cool down dog walking partner. She loves to walk and knows that after Houdini gets home it is her turn. So I walk her up and down the street so she can get her 'sniff' on.

Jogging with the dogs is way better than going alone! Everyone should have a dog to walk or jog with!

Hi all, my name is Brenda and I am from West Virginia. My dog Shiloh said I needed to join this group. He is my motivator, he wants to walk and run.

Shiloh is a 13 month old mixed breed that I adopted from Pet Helpers (a rescue volunteer group) He's Australian shepherd or heeler and the vet thinks he also has husky in him. As you can see from my profile picture is he is a beautiful boy. He's happiest when he's running, walking and exploring.

My goal is to start running for myself (I've always wanted to) and for him.

I wish I could help. My guys are such different speeds that I usually end up walking them individually. It gives me more exercise & some "alone" time. Besides, my Basset is more the "end of the flexi, out ahead trailblazing" type, the one Cavalier just shuffles along & the other is more "Carry me, Mommy". Maybe I need a dog stroller! emoticon

If your two dogs are good walkers, you could get a coupler that attaches two dogs to one leash. It works great unless one dog lags behind. Then you could put your new puppy on the other side on his own leash. You can get them at Petco or Pet Smart.

I used the coupler for my two dogs. It worked very well -- no tangling at all even if they traded places. But if I walked too far the older Boston terrier (10 years old & 20 pounds) got tired on the trip back and then my poodle (2 years old & 9 pounds) would end up pulling the Boston!! LOL So I usually walk one on each side, each on their own leash.

We just adopted a third dog. We have a black lab and a golden/newfoundland mix and a yellow lab puppy has just wandered into our yard. We've checked with neighbors and just can't bear to take her to the pound. She fits in and and is sweet but how can I walk with three dogs? We have a camping trip planned soon. We'll see how that goes, but the dog will out number us. Any suggestions?

Hi all! So excited about this team! My two pups are the reason I'm teaching myself to run. I'm Deborah and my pack consists of a 2-1/2 year old German Shepherd (Duchess) and a 2 year old Siberian Husky (Tikaani). They are definitely my motivation to strap on my running shoes every morning...

Hello everyone,

I have been a part of this group for a while now, but I never see much activity going on.

I am from Virginia and I now have two dogs. I had a golden retriever that passed away last October and he really got me into dogs. He was my husbands, but came to live with us when we finally got a house and had the best year of his last life. I did everything with him and came to realize dogs didn't have to be smelly, slobbery, gross creatures.

When he passed away, I looked everywhere for another dog. We finally got our 1.5 year old chocolate lab/Irish setter mix from the local pound - where I least expected to get my new dog. He has been a great addition and is incredibly energetic - he really does get my moving. We began fostering to give him company through the local Humane Society, and on the second dog, it was a really shy dog and we ended up last weekend adopting him. He is a duck toller and he's 2.5. He is a timid creature, but has come such a long way from when he first came to live with us in March. The labrasetter is Draco, and my duck toller is Foxtrot.

So, there they are. They balance each other out.

How EXCITING! Isn't that TRISH on the Team's profile photo??? She's a dear, dear friend of mine, and so that sealed it for me joining this team! I couldn't miss those basset hounds of hers for anything, or her big smile!

I have an English Mastiff/lab and a German Shepherd, and my name is Lori. My GSD, Rhetta is only 9 months old, but she's as big as the EML, Moose, already!

I love to walk with Rhetta and am teaching her to "heel".

I have lost 65 pounds on SparkPeople since 10-21-2009, and I am a firm believer in sparking!

Hello all ,

My name is Marybeth and I have two 4 legged canine friends I have Maysa who is a black and tan coonhound /Australian Cattle Dog mix and I have little Bailey he is a Pugshire sweetest little dog he has a real bad skin allergy we have spent over $1000.00 trying to find a cure but all the vets want to do is give him steroid shots that they said would shorten his life.
Anyway I have been a member of SP for a long time but left and finally came back yesterday needing the support that I can only get at SP . Don't get me wrong I get it from my hubby and my family but to have other people support you that know what you are going through is different.
Anyway hope to get to know you all..

Hi all. I'm new to the group from Northern Virginia.

I have two Australian Shepherds and a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. We do flyball, freestyle, and rally.

Now that I'm down some pounds and more fit, I have started looking for places to hike and walk with my dogs. My goal is to run with my younger Aussie. She is recovering from a shoulder injury, so we're just now starting to really get her back in shape.

Hello! I am 20 years old and my fitness partner is my 2 year old American Pit Bull Terrier. He is an amazing motivator for several reasons. Being part of the terrier group, he is relatively high energy and if he doesn't get his run in, he is constantly bringing me his rope or tennis ball or plays tag with the cat (quite entertaining actually). If he DOES get his run in with me, he sleeps all day. I also use each run as a training session for "heel" and i feel like I am so focused on getting him in the perfect position that I forget I'm running.

I am also wanting to get him started in competitive weight pull and he needs to build up his endurance same as I do.

I am very pro "pit bull" and he always behaves perfectly when we are out running and I love getting him out for people to see a well behaved bully. I am working on getting his CGC and after that I am going train him for TDI.

I am very interested in meeting other responsible, educated bully owners! Has anyone here been through the CGC test? If so, any tips?

The more people I meet, the more I love my dog.

Hello,

I am new to spark as well as this team. I am a big time animal lover and have 3 ferrets, a bearded dragon, a cat, and a dog. My boxer and I love going places together and we take long walks on weekends. I am a busy law student with little time to do much else but read for class. My boxer is now 14 months old and have been through several training classes already, but he still has some bad manners because he gets too excited when meeting people and tends to knock them over (he weighs in at 53 pounds and is still growing). We will be starting another obedience class and then an agility training class around the beginning of the year so it will be a good chance for him and I to get some good exercise. It's also good to give him something to do because he tends to get into things whenever he gets bored.

Any other boxer owners out there? What do you like to do with your dog?

Hello All. New to this team but not to Spark.

We have a one-year old border collie/lab mix that we got from the Idaho Humane Society. Our dog Jet is a graduate of the Inmate Dog Alliance Program of Idaho. He spent two months in prison being trained by inmates. He learned crate training, heel, sit, lay down, shake, high five, pray and play dead.

He's a wonderful addition to the family. We take him walking a lot and I've just started running with him for a mile a couple of times a week. I'd like to get him up to at least 3 miles and possibly 5 depending on how he does. So far he's doing great and a very good running buddy.

Neither real food, nor exercise, come from a box.

Welcome!

Are you new to SparkPeople or just to the team?

I'm sure you will enjoy this team. My fuzzy friend in the picture is Colman.

When you go to your spark page, find the "edit my spark page" button. There you will find out how to post pics. It is fairly easy to follow.

Or go to "Help".

I don't know how to post pictures...so check out my profile if you want to see them.

My name is Angel, I'm 24 year old from Chesterfield (UK). I'm a full time home maker and Avon sales rep. I love being at home all day as it means Paws can have all my attention all day, he's never home alone longer than a couple of hours except on date night.

Paws is my 2.5 year old Patterdale Terrier. I adopted him at the start of the month, nothing bad, he's not been mistreated or anything, in fact he comes from a wonderful home. The only problem is that his owners had osteoporosis and a heart condition and just couldn't devote the time and energy he needed to be happy and healthy, hence he's a bit tubby, but 4 miles a day i sure cutting that down.

Paws comes from a 2 dog home and is now in a single dog home, which is really hard for him as he's very friendly and very playful. We're known regular in our local park (Holmebrook Valley) and he's made a few friends that he can sniff and play with on occassion, but there's no gurantee of meeting them as we don't tick to set times and most of his friends don't stick to set paths. He' completely unafraid of other dogs, which may explain why his best friend at the moment is a great dane! The other dog doesn't mind him barking hi head off the entire game, or getting Paws head puhed into his mouth...No, I really don't know why he does that either. And Paws for once, doesn't mind the other dog putting his paws on him, mostly because Paw can fit under the great danes stomach, a playful paw isn't really going to bother him.

It's such a shame we don't have a regular friend we meet up with because Paws would love that, and it'd give me a chance to work on his recall around other dogs. In fact, that search is what led me to thi site in the first place, so if anyone's local and fancies meeting a Patterdale terrier...message me, no matter how big your dog is, great dane to teacup terrier, he'll befriend them all ^_^

Welcome Druidmama.

I love your Doug Larson quote! So true!

I must have missed this thread because I am not on it. I did introduce myself elsewhere. I think you will enjoy this team. My dog teams are my favorite ones. There is nothing better than people who love dogs and dogs who love people.

Just to fill you in - I have a year old apricot poodle named Colman. He is full of energy and fun. I also have a nine-year old Boston terrier named Bauxley. He loves to play tug with Colman, but "poops" out a lot sooner. Our 14-year old cat, Daisy Lou, prefers to stay away from all that action.

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

Looking forward to this team. My very supportive family and I have gotten into the habit of taking walks after dinner together. I can't wait to include our dogs, who are all currently in heat. We can't walk them when they're in heat, because we're in a 'dog neighborhood,' and too many of our neighbors don't contain their dogs. Besides, we have coyotes. Can't our risk our babies having babies right now.

We have three girls: Alexis is an 8 year old wolf/shepherd mix, Beretta is a 3 year old rottie, and Pagan in an 18 month old American Bulldog. They are all very active and huge motivators.

I also have my husband and my 8 year old son to help me keep going.

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

Very excited to see this team. Just started on Sparkpeople today.

I'm Becky, I live in Wimberley, TX. I'm single. I have a bunch of pets-2 dogs, 2 cats, and a parrot. I'm also a Master Naturalist, love hanging out online, and am attempting to plan a "real" garden for the first time solo.

I have two dogs, an elderly Heeler named Grommit and and a "teenage" Carolina dog, Possum. Grommit has slowed down a lot this past year, has arthritis, and probably won't be around much longer. He's reluctant to get out off my back deck, so walking too far with him is not an option, though I do want to get him outside more. However, the younger dog definitely needs to burn off energy, as well as get some quality time with me, since the "dog schedule" tends to revolve around the needs of the older dog.

I am two months out from a meniscus repair surgery and am just now feeling like I can actually walk more than a block without pain. So my goal is to start a routine with my younger dog, and increase slowly and steadily. Any encouragement and motivation is more than welcome!

Look forward to meeting folks and their dogs

Hi there,

Great to see this team.

I am Judith who has a Wonder Dog (the more about her I know the more I wonder!) called Pickle. She is of dubious parentage ~ lucher 9which is a mix) and german shepherd are in her past and somethign else. I've had her for about 2.5 years and she is coming up 3. She pulls the lead and is always eager to go for a walk and be active. She sure motivates me to walk far more than in the past. My old dog, Patience, was about (she was resced) 17 when she passed.... I'd had her for 16 years.... and she didn't walk that far in the end. Pickle is so different to her but they both have a spweicla place in my heart.

Looking forward to getting to know you all

Hi Katie, & welcome to Dog Motivators. We a small but friendly group. I'm so glad to see you already found our Welcome thread! Our dogs keep us motivated, & I think, make the best exercise partners!

Your Wesley is adorable. I have to admit, I have a soft spot for long low dogs. My first Basset's best friend was my aunt's German Shepherd. They made an unlikely team, but were simply devoted to each other. Looks like you have the best of both worlds!

Looking forward to hearing more about you & Wesley!

Hi, I'm Katie and I have a neutered male German Shepherd/Weiner Dog cross named Wesley. I call him a Sausage Dog. There is a picture of my Wesman on my SparkPage if you're interested.

I adopted him from a rescue in February, 2008 when he was about 8 months old so this July he'll be 4 years old. In addition to unconditional love, he motivates me by telling me on a daily basis that the weather is fine (even if it isn't) for walkies!

Welcome to you & Maddy & Louisa. I have to giggle at some scandal in the family! I've had a few dogs of somewhat dubious parentage myself. Second hand (and 3rd or 4th hand) dogs can make such nice pets. So glad you joined us!

17+ is a remarkable life for a dog. You must've taken excellent care of her. It's so hard to lose these guys. I lost my previous Basset at 14 & swore I wouldn't get another. But my new guys are wonderful & definitely my reason for trying to lose--or for doing most things really!

Looking forward to hearing more!

Hi!
I'm Susan and I'm a dog-mother to Maddy and Louisa. Maddy is a cream coloured, male Pomeranian and Lou looks like a pure yellow lab but we think there might have been some scandal in her family. Both are four years old and we are their third (and final) family. I volunteer with a humane society and they basically chose me! My husband and I do not human children so our lives revolve around our version of Mutt and Jeff...or Dingaling and Doofus as they are often called (with affection of course).

Because of them, our lives are that much fuller and we all get a fair amount of walking done. They are walked in the woods (off leash) a minimum of 2.5 km a day and sometimes we do that journey twice.

We previously had a 17.5 year old mix (Peaches) who passed away 9 months ago. She was our firstborn (!) and she was my flowergirl when we were married. Because of her age, I got really lazy and could only walk the length of myself on a good day. Since her death, I've had to get used to the energy of two younger dogs and they have slowly but surely motivated me to get off my duff and get walking.

I still have a lot of weight to lose but this journey is so much more than that. I suffer from chronic depression and have for the past 30 plus years. Each season brings more challenges but I'm proud to say, I'm slowly but surely going to get those pounds off.

Anyway, please check out my SparkPage to see my furbabies.

Susan

Hi, Maegan! Welcome aboard. Bella sounds like a great dog. I had a Miniature Poodle when growing up & have always been slightly in awe of Standards. They're such elegant dogs!

Glad you could join us! Check out our Chase the Bunny Challenge --just to get us motivated to get in shape for Easter. Join a topic or start one! If you have any questions, just yell. We're a pretty friendly if not-terribly-active group!

Looking forward to Poodle stories!

Hi! My name is Maegan and my best friends name is Bella. She is a Standard Poodle. We are like two peas in a pod. I adopted her when she was 5 months old from a breeder that couldn't sell because of the economy. She's 1.5 now and she has been the best thing to happen to me. She motivates me everyday to go on walks and play catch. Her favorite game is tug-o-war and it's more of a workout then I thought lol. She's a giant now. I don't even have to bend over for the hugs she loves to give. lol.

Welcome aboard! Splash? What a perfect name for a Lab! Tell her that I can sympathize with the salt & pepper bit, though increasingly, the salt is winning.

Great job on the walks! I used to Volkswalk (6.2m), but I was younger then--and much thinner. I'm trying to build up to do 'em again. So far, I'm a long way off! Hearing about your long ones inspires me!

Hi, I am Linda from Pennsylvania, and my dog is Splash, a black lab mix (but she is getting to be more of a salt and pepper lab mutt.) We are both seniors.......she is 13 and I am 65, but we both love to walk and do it often. Our longest walk last year was just over 9 miles, and we did an 8.1 miler last week. When we started walking 2 years ago, she lost 9.5 pounds, and has kept it off, I know we are both healthier with the walking. I look forward to interacting with the team!

Hi all, I have been a member of SP and this team for quite awhile. Dora dog, a 10 yr. old Lab mix and I do a lot of walking and there are some paths about a half a mile from my place where she can be off lead. She loves leaping over the downed trees and just running. Maybe getting to do that is part of why at 10 she is as active and lively as she has ever been. Her picture is on my home page.

I followed a friend to this team. How exciting! When the weather is nice here in cold, cold Montana, I love to walk with all my dogs. I have 1 English Shepherd & 2 basset hounds. Life is interesting since they walk at difference paces. Our ES can go off leash when we are in safe (away from roadways) areas but the bassets would get a rabbit scent & start a chase. The ES chases but comes right back, the bassets don't. So we get different types of walks in depending on who is walking the dogs & where we are.

I'm looking forward to meeting other dog motivators!

If you're new, feel free to start a new topic & post an intro for yourself and/or your dogs!

Things have been a bit quiet. With several new members plus others returning after a long absence, please feel free to post a re-introduction, so we can all get to know each other and our dogs.

Share amusing dog stories too under the "Laugh Your Tail Off" general thread. One can never have too many dog stories! Welcome aboard!
