Welcome! A 40 minute 5k is great! I finished my first 5k in 43 minutes. I ran my most recent in 28:00, and that was at the tail end of my first triathlon, so I'd already swam and biked! Take it from me, if you're consistent and diligent, the strength and speed will come. The most important thing is to make it a part of your life. And the medals definitely help with that!

Wow, what an awesome story!! Great job getting out there, and awesome that you have found a happy place with this sport!!!
I'm also in Canada, but usually run alone as I need time for me:) Most of my friends want to run with others, so looking for a group is a great idea:):)

Please keep letting us know how you are doing!!

Hugs,
Trish

Great enthusiasm. Running is tons of fun. There is lots of good information on the web such as Runner's World and apps for your phone. Look for a local running group. then you will always have friends to run and race with and great support *even starting out when you are slower). I live in Canada and we have several in my area and sometimes I run with a Detroit Group as well. Enjoy your new adventure .... you will be running half-marathons in no time.

I'm Tiffany in Phoenix and as I lost weight I decided to put a 5K on my bucket list. Not sure why, because I've never been a runner, but it seemed like something I wanted to prove to myself. Well, I got talked into signing up for a race we ran last month only to learn that it was the day after I'd promised my daughter we would do the Pride Walk/Run in support of a few of our gay friends in tough circumstances. So, we did a 3K walk on a Saturday (27:38) followed by my first 5K "run" on Sunday (45:03). I decided I LOVE THE MEDALS! So now I want to keep running so I can get a big pile of 'em. :-) Last night I did a 5K night run and came in at 40:17; still not impressive but a huge improvement, even though I thought I would DIE at the finish line. ;-)
Anyway, I just found this group and it sounds perfect. I look forward to learning and growing with you guys as I become a "real" runner.
PS--I went to the Runners' Den for GOOD running shoes; what a difference they make! Next stop: running clinic.
