Hi, my name is Pam - I ahve been knitting since my grandmother taught me when I was a child (45 years ago?) - I am also a weaver. I don't have a lot of time to do either but need to find the time for it! I am trying to get healthy - have lost 30 pounds and been stalled for a few months...time to rededicate! emoticon

Hi team, I am Bonnie, I am from Utah, I have been doing crafts all my life, not just knitting but I vary - sewing, cross stitch, crocheting, and much more. I have began doing crafts 29 years ago when I was pregnant with my (only) daughter. She is my best friend, although I try to teach her what I know, she admires my work but gets frustrated to easily when I try to teach her, lol. I hope one day she picks up on the joy of at least one craft, but she is talented in many other areas, such as writing, painting, and drawing although she is too modest to admit it. I am here to make new friends and supporters in my journey. I joined to be support to my daughter but we both can always use outside support. Trust me, we are more than willing to support others as well. I am excited to get to know some people in this group and share ideas and more. Best wishes team! emoticon

Hi, I'm Joy, from central Indiana, now living in KY after making a long tour of several other states. I'm a librarian and am director of a small, rural, county library, which keeps me very busy. I'm also active in our chamber of commerce and an organization called "new pioneers for a sustainable future" which pretty much tells it's own story. We have a small farm (like, micro, it's only 4.5 acres, and around here a "small farm" is 100 acres). We raise chickens, ducks and geese, and have one crazy tom turkey. I have a 6th grade son, and a husband who's about to have gastric bypass surgery. I need to give the diet and exercise thing a try before I go that route though. Glad to be here.

Hi, I'm Linda from upstate NY. I'm 57, living for retirement lol. I work at the dept of social services as a caseworker, and we have a noontime knitting group every tuesday! Today is the day! We call ourselves the "knoontime knitwits". We take annual spring field trips to check out the knitting stores, and we are planning one at this time. My projects tend to be simple ones - scarves, slippers, and dishcloths. I am working hard to lose weight. I may consider bariatric surgery, and in connection with that I am showing my good intent by trying to lose weight prior to getting approved. Who knows - maybe I won't end up needing the surgery!!! I am doing the Spark Book and Dr Beck's book. All for now!! Linda from central NY

Hi my name is Debbie and I live in Bay City, Michigan. I have been a knitter since I was 9 years old. I did traditional knitting and then did machine knitting. I have since found beaded knitting and for the last 3 years I have been knitting victorian beaded purses and beaded scarves. I have found this so relaxing and have met a great group of women who also share this love. I hope to get to know some of the people on this site. Debbie

Hello, my name is Jane. I have been on Sparkpeople for quite awhile. Still struggling with my weight but I have learned alot. I am just learning to knit. So far I have done a couple of dishcloths, a Swiffer cover (love it) and what my daughter calls the world's smallest potholder (I guess I knitted too tight). My sister is an avid knitter and I learned as a child from my grandmother. I look forward to learning more. Eating when I am alone and in the evenings is a problem for me, knitting is part of my solution.

Hi all. My name is Pam. I haven't been on here in a long time, but now I'm back. Spring is coming and it's time to get serious with the weight loss program and get back into knitting. Is anyone going to the MD Sheep & Wool Festival in May?

Hi! I'm Rea, from South Dakota. I just taught myself how to knit last summer via lots of you-tube videos and lots of staring at web pages illustrating techniques. My husband was greatly amused to see me poised with needles in hand staring at the screen. I consider myself somewhere between beginner and intermediate.

Hi Everyone! I'm new to the SparkTeam! I'm from Wisconsin. My grandmother taught me to knit as a child and now I'm back at it(years later). I've knit a lot for my family: mittens, scarves, afghans, felted clogs, sweaters for my daughter,etc... I just started the adventure of sock knitting. I always enjoy learning something new and I love the challenge.

Hi, I'm Stacey from Birmingham, AL. I have been knitting since I was a young girl, and it is my life's passion (outside of my family). This is the third time that I have resurrected my sparkpeople account, so here it goes again. I have a lot of weight to lose, and I just went to the dr. yesterday for a checkup. I would so love to show significant weight loss at a checkup, so I'm starting again

You might try Sidewinders (free pattern) nonaknits.typepad.com . Look in the sidebar for Sidewinders. They are knit back and forth and then grafted. I am knitting them now for the second time, and I love them. They are great-fitting and fast to knit. The designer recommends a long circular, but you could try straights.

Hi I come from Malta in the Meditteranean and this must be the fourth or fifth time that I have got started again with Spark. I try to do things on my own but I just don't achieve my goals. Spark is the best place for me if I am ever going to loose this weight.

I love knitting and have made many jumpers and tops. I have just begun a sweater in wine coloured wool and it is a bit complicated but I have got used to the pattern.

I also do cross stitch but my knitting has somehow dominated my life.

I notice that a lot of you knit socks. I would love to be able to knit them, but I can only knit with long needles as I anchor them under my arms. Does anyone have a pattern for knitting socks with 2 needles? I would love to be able to do that.

Hi, I'm new to spark. I'm from Ohio and I love to knit. I am currently working on a pair of socks for my teenage daughter. I like to work on little projects; not anything too big. I took up knitting when my kids were little and I had alot of soccer practices to go to. It's just a great way to help with waiting (like in doctor's offices and hair appointments).

Hello everyone,
My name is Angel, I'm new to spark people (just signed up) and was so excited to find a knitting group. I've been knitting for about 2 years. I taught myself from a book because I didn't know anyone who knew how to knit. I've done about ten thousand scarves, an oversized sweater (that I LOVE), several sadly misshapen hats, and many aborted attempts at socks. I think I have some sort of block about them. I really like working with cables and have recently understood why cables are easier with a chart. I live near Nashville with my husband, son, and three dogs. Our son is 15 and in possession of a learner's permit to drive, so beware. If I were a better dog mom, I would take the pups for walks more often. That is one of my fitness goals, to take my dogs for a 20 minute walk each day before I go to work. I have a couple of relatives expecting babies this year, so I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and work on baby projects. I think I want to start with soft blankets.

Hi everyone. I hope I am doing this right. I am new to this. I have been knitting since I was 6 years old. Right now I am working on prayer shawls for my church. I weigh over 400 lbs and can not even get an accurate weight as my scale only goes to 396lbs. I look forward to getting to know you. I live in Canada and spend half of the year in Edmonton Alberta and the rest of the year in Kelowna BC.

Hi, everyone!

I'm Elise from NW Indiana, and I'm returning to the site after a hiatus of a couple years. I work at the local library, and I have a knitting podcast that I record in my spare time. I'm really hoping to take advantage of the Spark community this time around. Giving and receiving feedback is much more important than I realized before!

Welcome Charlotte, it is great to meet you. You are a busy lady!!! It is wonderful that you do fostering, working with rescue etc. Sorry you lost you furbaby. I also lost my yellow lab the end of Dec. and it is still painful. Yes, it is easy to get side tracked reading other posts, blogs etc. This is a great way to meet others that have the same interest as you do. Glad to have you.

Hi ALL!

I don't think I have introduced myself here, I keep meaning to it but I get in the link and start to read what everyone else wrote, and then get involved with a question or a knitting pattern or someone's link to another group, I am way to easily distracted!! emoticon

So about me - I joined SP in summer 2008, after having lost the first few pounds on my own. I had been 220 lbs for several years, but was determined to find a way to get back to a healthy weight. SP was such a help in learning how to make it happen.

I wasn't always overweight, but just seemed to gain over the years. And since I retired, my weight had gotten high enough that my doctor was warning me of impending Diabetes. Joining SparkPeople changed all that, giving me the tools and support to actually make it happen. Over the past 18 months I have gradually lost about 50 lbs. I am still working on taking off the remaining 25. I couldn't have done it without SP and all the support I have received here.

I am a mom and grand-mom. My son lives close by with his fiancee and her daughter. They are planning a wedding in the spring. My daughter lives in Texas with her hubby and their two children, my dear grandkids. I was married to a Navy Submariner for 25 years, who passed away 15 years ago. I am now retired and living in a small town in Western Washington State. I have had several rescued bulldogs, the oldest one just passed on in Sept. I now have a 2-1/2 year old little female Bullie named Char-Lit. I continue to help with dog rescue, doing home checks, transports, and occasional fostering. Thank goodness bulldogs kisses don't have calories!! I also enjoy knitting in the winter, and gardening in the warmer months. I have appreciated the exchange of knitting ideas and patterns here on this team.

Charlotte

After a very long time, I thought I would check in and update my status, and say Hi to anyone still there who remember's me. I am doing well, have had some setbacks, but not in the weight loss department. My goal has always been my Sparkpeople name, Iwillbe145. I am able to see the goal line now, I weighed in this morning at 152. I still have nearly 10 lbs to go, and I can see by my belly that I will want to continue loosing until I have a waistline again, but I am so happy to have come so far.

I am a new knitter. I started knitting in January. Kids at my elementary school wanted to knit scarves for the local soup kitchen to give away, and I jumped at the chance to learn. My Nan who is 88 is a fantastic knitter. She has made me scarves, sweaters, dishcloths over the years, and I have loved every piece of it. She has also made baby blankets for me to give to my girlfriends at their baby showers, and I thought it was about time I learned for myself. And I love it!!! I'm on my 5th scarf, and love my knitting time at night. I am making some beautiful scarves, in gorgeous colours, and finally learning something I have admired for years. It's relaxing and rewarding in so many ways. My projects are going where they are needed, and it's such a nice way to unwind at the end of the day. It's also stopped my night time snacking because my hands are busy. I love it!

And as I work on improving my health, I will knit my way through! Glad to have found something that helps with my relaxing as well as curbing my night time snacking! Yay! SO I am so glad to be part of this team, as I am a new passionate knitter. :)

emoticon I had someone to teach me to knit when I was an ill teenager and had to spend time in bed, but your method of knitting is one that I employ often. I will use it as a way to master a new stitch pattern that I see in a book, so there is nothing there to laugh at. Knitting is a great stress reliever which actually helps in weight loss.

Hi and welcome to the team and SP, great to have you. I started out knitting on scarves too and some of them don't actually resemble a scarf but it was good practice. There are lots of knitting instruction books out there and if you could join a class it would be great too. Some of my friends get together and knit every other week. There is a "teacher" among us to help if we get stuck. Good luck with the knitting and SP.

Hello Everyone,
I have been with SP since September but I have been in and out and up and down. I am back though and promise to stick with it this time. I joined Knitters but I am just learning to knit. In fact I only know how to cast on and the knit stictch. I am working on a scarf to start and I will be honest, i am not following a pattern. I just picked a set of needles and some cheap yarn to learn with. I started the first row and just stopped when it looked right to start the 2nd row. I am sure that all you expert, seasoned knitters are gasping in shock. I have wanted to knot forever and finally just went for it. I can use all the advice you can offer on how to proceed. I can't wait to get to know all of my fellow sparkers and knitting lovers better.

Hi I live in Central Arkansas and I learned to knit in 2007 in a knitting class at a branch library.

It took me two months to learn to knit, there were several experienced knitters in class teaching me their way to cast off and knit. Then one woman showed me how, she did not show me how by going too fast as the others did. I had a problem with casting off, the usual way was very confusing to me, I just could not work my fingers the way it is done, so she showed me to do it in cable cast off and that worked better for me.

I usualy just knit wash/dish cloths and use them myself or give them away.
Since it has been rather cold lately, I have been knitting sample size squares for an afghan when I feel I have added enough to it. It is a great way to get rid of yarn that was given to me or some that I thought I liked and don't anymore.

Even though, I do not knit many things as you all do, It is great to be able to learn more.

Hey, I'm from the UK and only started knitting last year but am loving it. I've done a few small projects and am looking forward to making my first jumper (when my ribbing gets a bit neater!) I've just finished my first cable pattern and am about to give lace a try.
I still definately consider myself a begginner and can't wait to learn some more and lose weight along the way.

Hi, I'm from WA. I've been knitting for over 6 years and learned to Crochet over 20 years ago. I would consider myself fairly advanced but still have lots to learn the more challenging the pattern the better! I love cables and lace. With Homeschooling three kids under 10, Most of my knitting time is in the car or after they have gone to bed at night.

I'm Tracy, I live in CT. now grew up in Mass. I am a nurse working nights in a busy Emergency room. I am married with a 12 year old daughter. I also have a cat, dog, and horse. I've been knitting for 6 years now. Although my mom did attempt to teach me as a child, I failed that lesson. It seems that the only thing I have knitted is baby blankets. There has been a baby boom over the last few years at my hospital. Finally for a change I am doing a throw for my sister-in-law, but someone else just announced her pregnancy so I guess it'll be back to the baby colors after that.

Penny, I really admire you for homeschooling. My daughter does too. Also for being such an accomplished sock knitter. I got the clarification on my sweater. The pattern just wasn't clear on the directions. Socks are next!!!

Azure, go for the socks, but be warned that they are addictive: quickly finished, multiple patterned, wonderful yarns. emoticon

I am from the Mid Ohio Valley on the West Virginia side. I have 3 grown children, 2 teenager, and 2 grandchildren. 5 of the 6 are male! They all love homemade socks, even the daughter-in-laws. This time of year the most popular sytle is woolese boot length socks. I don't dare leave a finished pair around or they just disappear.
I consider myself an advanced intermediate knitter. I have knitter for30+ Year and taught myself the European method of knitting.I really like projects that are not too complicated and are not going to take a really long time to finish.

I home school and have time that I have to be available, but not in deep concentration.

I love flowers and recently have begun to work on orchids at the urging of a friend from Central America. They bloom beautifully. In warmer weather,I love to garden and work on flower bed out of doors, so not nearly as much knitting gets done.

Glad to have you new teammates. I do wish you luck on your knitting projects. I have a sweater going now that I am a loss as to what the directions are saying!! Guess I'll eventually figure it out!

Hi,

I've been on spark people about a week now. My goal is to get to my goal weight by my birthday in November and to meet a sub-goal by my son's wedding celebration in September.

I am marriend, work full time, and I'm working on an Executive MBA. I have 3 grown children and 2 grandsons. My second grandson was born this past Christmas Eve and I'm planning a visit later this month for my oldest grandson's 3rd birthday.

I love to knit, but am finding it difficult to find the time to do it because of school. My next project is to knit my first pair of socks.

I'm Carol from Missouri and I've been knitting since the 5th grade. A classmate taught me to knit and as I was sitting in front of her, I learned to knit backwards. Years later I realized my error and corrected it. Today, I'm tackling my first knitted lace project and I'm discovering that unlike many crafts, this IS as difficult as it looks. Wish me luck. I'm determined to succeed at this knitting project as much as I am to succeed at losing another 50 lbs. I've already lost 31 lbs, but have stalled out and need help getting back on track.

I'm joining this Team Forum to combine my love of knitting with my struggle to maintain my momentum. So here I am and I've already put in three 30 min. sessions on my Stationery bike this week and drank more water than I have in the last month.

Maybe with some help, I can finish my Lace Scarf and reach my goal weight at the same time...I'm not sure which will be the hardest challenge.

Thanks
Carol emoticon

Hi,

I am from Chicago by way of NY and I have been living in Florida for the last 6 years. I started knitting about 9 years ago, and I made mostly scarves :-(. I made myself a really cute tank top that I can no longer wear. I spent a lot time and money on this project, and I hate that I can only look at it.

When I moved to Florida, I stopped knitting. The warm weather here is not motivating at all. Recently, I joined the gym so I took up knitting again. I knit while on the bicycle since that's the only cardio machine that I can use right now. So, I am back to knitting scarves again!

Hi everyone, I am Sandi from Tallahassee, Fl. and I am new to this team but not real new to SP. I have two grown children and 4 grandchildren, none of them live in my area but in central Fl. My husband and I are retired. I love to both knit and crochet and have been doing both about 4 years. I just had to put my 14 y/o yellow lab down due to cancer so I'm still sad about that. I miss her lots. SP and the differnt teams I have joined have really helped me with the loss of her as well as weight goals etc. Nice to meet all of you on this team. emoticon emoticon

Hi Everyone! I'm Lorraine and I'm from Ottawa, Ontario Canada. I've been with sparkpeople for about a week and a half. I've been knitting since I was 7. I asked my Grandmother for a pair of needles and some yarn and for her to teach me! (She had her work cut out for her:) Over the years, I've become a knitting expert and was so lovingly given the name "knitwit" by my little sister. Currently, I'm knitting very tiny sweaters for my miniature dollhouse business (1"=1'). I also have big plans and a whole lot of yarn which I will use to knit both my kids new blankets for their beds.

POLARPUP: Thanks, it helps to know i'm not alone in owning multiple balls of yarn =) I will definitely check out knittinghelp.com. I did learn how to purl, but it wasn't till my current scarf was 2 feet long, that i realized you actually have to "knit 1, purl 2" to keep the edges from curling in... oh well, i guess i'll have to make another... =) Let me know how your new patterns are going,

have a great day!
