DRBANDAID, you are my kind of people!! I have the will and the yarn, but time just seems to slip away. I have used the internet numerous times for the new stitches I am learning. I have found knittinghelp.com to be indispensible. It not only has the instructions but yes, video too. My mom and sister who live 1 1/2 hr away from me are professional knitters, so when I'm home I do get some mini-lessons on the side. They keep encouraging me to get past just the knit stitch ... so I've recently purchased two new patterns & yarn. Now where am I going to find the time, lol!! It was a pleasure meeting you, and have a GREAT day!!

Hello!

I'm originally from LA, but am currently residing in NJ and have been living on the east coast for the last 7 yrs.

I'm relatively new to knitting... I learned how to crochet while in medical school (moving from LA to upstate NY was quite the incentive for warm weather gear!). I have successfully completed an entire 2 scarves ;) and did give my entire family balls of yarn for xmas one year in hopes that they would eventually get a completed project... they're still waiting. I'm in the third year of my ER residency now and learned how to knit this year from youtube. I am in the process of making a gorgeous cotton candy pink scarf. I'm still limited to rectangular shapes, but someday would like to learn how to read and manage a pattern. My problem is finding the time... But I love it anyway and hope to finish my scarf soon (ok at least before the warm weather comes)

From the few posts I read here, I may be the oldie of this group! I've been knitting since 1983! I learned to crochet in 1972! I loved crocheting, but my dream was to knit sweaters like my Pastor's wife! They were so beautiful! After many attempts to teach me (I was all thumbs) we quit!
After I married (a wonderful Sailor at the time) a friend from the Servicemen"s Center taught me to crochet. I was "hooked" on everything! We moved from coast to coast. At our last duty station (Charleston, S.C.) our neighbor sat next to me and patiently taught me casting on... the rest is history!
My husband retired from the Navy in 1984 & we moved to Central Wisconsin. Within the first 5 years here I learned to spin, and have been continuing this craft ever since. I prefer to spin in the summer and knit or crochet in the winter.
I also sew, quilt, do machine embroidery, bead, stamp and scrapbook. My husband retired again last November, and I've sort of promised him that I would not learn another craft! We live in a 2 "bedroom" mobile home, my crafting has taken over the spare room and crept into the rest of the house!
I have 4 grown/married children and 8 grandchildren (ages 3 - 16). My sailor and I have been married almost 40 years.

I guess I forgot to mention, I'm still in scarf mode ... while I'm trying to learn some more challenging stitches. :)

Hi! I'm Kris. I've been knitting for about 2 years and am completely addicted. I just wish I had more time for it!! I live in Lutz, FL (just outside of Tampa) and am an RN. I'm currently working on my masters in nursing and hope to be an ARNP in the near future. Right now I've got a number of knitting projects brewing...a sweater, two hats, and two unfinished purses....with any luck, I'll get through them this year!

Hi my name is Sue from Fall Creek, Wisconsin. I am a new knitter. I have recently ventured from straight knitting to trying YO, K2, (Sl 1 as if to knit, K1, PSSO) ... a male co-worker thought I was playing battle ship when I posted that I needed help w/these stitches on Face Book, lol. I thougth this would be a fun group to get involved with ... ppl who have the same goals for weight loss as well a resource for when I get stuck on a project. Thanks for having me in your group.

I'm Christina, and knitting has been my active hobby since 2005. I learned to knit and crochet much earlier, and ended up crocheting more since my mom preferred it. I'm an avid knitter now though, and my mom is asking ME for help! I live in NJ. Right now I have a little shawl obsession, and I would REALLY love to finish the small pile of UFOs that have been plaguing me!

Hi my name is Kate, I live in WA. I taught myself how to knit last summer because I saw a pair of mittens that I had to have and I knew they would be extremely expensive IF I could actually find them anywhere - so i picked up a pattern book, some yarn and needles - i had to refer to an online video to understand what "slip next to stiches to a cable needle and leave at front..." meant lol - but a month later i had a scarf - a few weeks after that I had mittens and several orders from friends and family...

Hello, I'm Kristen! This will technically be my second post here on this forum, haha.

Anyways, I'm from Wilmington, Delaware and I've been knitting for maybe 2 years now and crocheting for longer (maybe 4 years?). I'd say that I'm intermediate. Learned very quickly thanks to a lack of things to do and the internet. I'm currently teaching knitting classes at my college. Well, I'm abroad this semester, so not right now, but I'm excited to go back in the Fall and begin teaching again.

Viv, that's really cool. I love history as well, was a history major the first time I went to school. What part of Alabama are you from? My sister lives just outside of Huntsville. And I love your name. My 3 yo granddaughter is named Vivian and we call her Vivi. Anyway, welcome back.

Hi everyone. I registered for sparkpeople yesterday. Finally decided to "just do it" instead of waiting for a "good time." I live in PA and had not knitted in years until last month when I finally picked up my needles again. I made a pair of slippers for my younger daughter and an ear flap hat for my 14 yo which was a success with her and her friends. I am now attempting my first pair of socks, and I want to knit a poncho for myself before the winter is over. Once spring comes I will be outside in the garden and time will be hard to come by.

Hello! I live in Lexington, VA and have been knitting for about 3 years now. I learned from reading the Klutz knitting book and basically taught myself. My specialties are scarves. I recently made a reversible scarf that was a gift and the recipient LOVED it. Now I'm planning another reversible for my mother-in-law. I have also recently learned how to do mittens, can do hats. I would love to move onto socks and sweaters!

Hi! I am MaggieM333 and am also an avid knitter and have been knitting for about 2 years. My latest projects are baby booties from two needles. I have a new grandson, Ezra James, and have been trying to make the same baby booties my mother made for my children. I finally completed the booties and have started a sweater. I love knitting and feel it helps me relax. I am from Maryland and live on the Eastern Shore.

I tried felting mittens at Christmas and they came out great. I make and donate baby hats to Newborns in need and other places. Fun,fun fun. Waiting to hear from a knit buddy. PS I am from Maine.

Hi, I'm iomgal from (at the mo anyway!) the Isle of Man. I've been knitting for about a year and a half, but am totally addicted - I am never without needles or hooks. I am a passionate sock knitter, as they are perfectly portable projects, and I loke a challenge! I am currently working on a Noro Waistcoat, Pomatomus socks, Ribbons of Valor sox (for Sock Wars V), a Garden Squares crochet blanket, a ripple (crochet) blanket, and (shortly when the yarn arrives) Mari's "Sylvi" coat from The Twist Collective sometime last year. I am also mending an heirloom blanket that suffered a dog attack, designing stuff for a friend and doing the Knitting City & Guilds course.

All this, and trying to work full time. Why doesn't knitting pay??

Lovely to meet you all.

Hey hey! Newbie here, 22 years old, been knitting since I was 8, but not consistantly. I would consider myself an intermediate knitter, but unfortunatly I'm not so hot at stitching my stuff together! Hope to get to know some of you better really soon!

Hello all

I'm from London England. Where it has been snowing.. we are obsessed by weather!

I'm a novice knitter and crocheter.. I'm currently working on a blanket. And would like to start other easy projects and pick up some tips.

My main ways of keeping fit is to ice skate and walk.

I hope to lose weight and become more healthy.

I really looking forward to being part of the knitters team.

Take care

Hi Everyone!

Until recently, I lived in Barrington, IL (NW suburb of Chicago). In Sept I retired (yeah!!) and now my husband and I live full time in our 40 ft motorhome with our dog, Trixie (petite bassett griffon vendene) or PBGV for short. Imagine a short and long Benji.

We are currently staying in Texas, we tend to camp in federal parks or state parks. We will be traveling soon to NM on our way west and then to the northwest. We sold our home and everything in it that didn't fit in the MH. Only stored two small file boxes.

I am an avid knitter for the past 40+ years. I have done sweaters, scarfs, socks, recently mittens, and of course afghans. My favorite project has been aran pattern afghans. I have already learned new things just lurking on the knitters chat.

I recently had a heart issue scare, which turned out ok; but I found while my whole life I have always had lower than normal blood pressure, now it is higher than normal.

I really need to lose weight and especially that unhealthy and unflattering belly fat. My goal is to lose 30 pounds.

I try to walk daily and am trying really hard to drink all that water which I know is so good for you.

This is an amazing website and am looking forward to our journey together.

Oh, and I am a world class cookie maker (hence my handle of cookie queen) oops, that doesn't fit well into a "diet" or healthy eating, eh? I will have to look for "healthy" cookies.

Hi Everyone,

This is cool that SP is combining knitting with weight loss! I'm living in a suburb of Vancouver, BC and have done so for the last 11 years, but I still consider myself a transplanted Texan. I've been knitting for almost 50 years.....gee, where did the time go???? I feel like I'm still only 30!

I just finished year one of the Nihon Vogue class... eight sweaters in 10 months in October and yesterday was the first time since I finished the class that I cast on stitches for another sweater. I did do about 4 pair of socks and a scarf....but nothing mind challenging. My goal is to lose at least 10 pounds--after that, we'll see. This is my second round with SP, but the first time that I've gotten involved in the forums and I feel much more committed this time and I think it's great that we have a lot more in common than just losing weight.

Hi! I'm Darlene. I'm from Wyndmoor, PA, (Springfield Twp. in Montgomery County). My MIL taught me how to knit 3 years ago through the trial-by-fire method. She casted-on and showed me the knit stitch. Then, she ripped it all out, handed me the needles & yarn, and said, "Now, you do it." I've taught myself the rest through tutorials & making a lot of mistakes. I consider myself to be an expert in basic to intermediate techniques and a novice/beginner in some advanced techniques. I started knitting in the round in May 2009 and overcame my fear of DPN's in December 2009.

As for weight loss goals, I want to get to 162 for 10% loss and get below the weight where I was before I fell off the radar 10/2008.

Happy knitting!

Hi all. I've been a member of sparkpeople for a while but just have just now made the commitment to truly use the site and make changes in my life. I've been knitting for about a year and am addicted to everything related to knitting - yarn, patterns, etc. After finishing all of my Christmas presents, I'm doing some selfish knitting ;-). I'm currently working on a hat for myself, my first foray into fair-isle knitting. Should be fun. Oh, and I live in Mississippi although I'm originally from Texas.

I just joined today and have had to drag myself away from the computer. Have a few minutes before going to work to say hello and tell you a little about myself. I started knitting about 3 years ago and I love it. Don't have too much time for large projects right now, so just doing two scarves and a baby sweater. Also just got yarn to make a matching scarf for a favorite Oleana sweater. Yummy. Tried to crochet but found it awkward. One of my resolves this year is to try to finish some of my bigger projects like the navy ruana that I started but have trouble seeing. scarves are easy to design and complete though. My favorite knitting store is Rather B Knitting in Encino but there are so many online too.

Thanks for the tips, Becky! I have done some online ordering, but I really miss being able to just wander through the store, touching yarns and browsing through pattern books. I think it's hard to buy online when all you get is a cheesy little picture! But luckily I did visit 2 Jo-Ann stores and stock up; my hubby had to rearrange the minivan to fit my crafting stuff in!! :) hee hee!

Welcome all newbies! Stacy, I was an assistant manager at a JoAnn's here in the Twin Cities for a long time. We'll have to compare notes. I had the same problem when I was growing up, not being able to find any decent place to get yarn and supplies, so I taught myself to knit with two stripped lilac twigs and sewing thread. I haven't stopped and that was 45 years ago! Then I discovered catalogs...Lee Wards (now Michael's) and Herrschner's have been life savers. Check out Herrschners.com, they have a fantastic selection of everything and it's usually quite quick for delivery. Take care all.

Blessed be.

Hi! I recently moved to Aberdeen, SD, from Howell, MI. What a change - nearly ALL my family and my husband's family is in Michigan! But the good thing about the move is that I no longer work full time. I'm a substitute teacher now. In Michigan I was a store manager at Jo-Ann Fabrics & Crafts. Imagine my woe at finding only one small mom & pop craft store in Aberdeen! As a knitter, scrapbooker, sewer, stamper, and all-around crafter, I'm dying here! But I did stock up when back in MI at Christmas. :) I think knitting is a great way to keep my hands out of the potato chip bag!! I'm an intermediate knitter, I guess. Hoping to get lots of motivation and swap fun patterns on this site!

Hi knitters!

I live in a suburb of Dayton, OH, but I'm originally from West Virginia. I have a 10-year-old daughter and 5-year-old twin boys, and after the twins were born I was able to lose my weight very quickly. Once I went back to work full time a couple of years ago, the weight quickly crept back on, so I'm working on getting rid of that now. I also got the Wii Fit Plus for christmas, so I'm psyched about that.

On my needles right now is the Berroco Lexical sweater. I'm about halfway through the back. I have 4 balls of Rowan Kidsilk and started the Birch shawl but then frogged it. I need to start that when I'm not distracted by other things. I also JUST cast on the stitches for the Midsummer Night's Dream sock in the Knitty Fall 09 edition. Hopefully I can get done with either the sweater or the socks before winter is over (I'm a very slow knitter).

Hi! I just moved to Towson, MD (near Baltimore), which is my home-town. For the past 8 years or so, I lived in Apex, NC. Since the move, my knitting has taken a back seat to unpacking. Now that things are starting to settle down, I'm looking forward to getting back to both knitting and fitness. I've joined a local gym and I signed up for a knitting class set to start on 1/10. It's to learn how to knit a gansey sweater, and I'm really getting psyched about it (wish I could be that way about the gym - LOL).

I have a gallery of my progress and a blog at www.anewjulie.com

I am doing Jillian Michaels 30 day shred, and saving my pennies for a Wii Fit Plus. someday. :D

i am only allowed to knit on days i work out, which has been a great motivator let me tell you :)

right now i have on my needles: a pair of socks (toe up, two at once), a double knit fair isle scarf, a fingerless long mitt, a scarf, a toy amigarami octopus.

Ooops! Forgot to answer the main questions. Hello? Okay. I was born in Michigan, but I have been in Fredericksburg, VA, area now for 35 years and this is my hometown now since I lived all over the place growing up. I learned to knit and crochet from my Aunt Betty when I was 12 years old. I liked making headbands back then. I tried knitting an afghan when I was in my 20's but it was a pieced item of many triangles. My guage was so messed up that all the triangles came out different sizes, so I never put it together. For the past 16 months I have been knitting to my heart's content and I now consider myself an intermediate knitter. Knitting is so therapeutic!

Hello knitters! I'm new to SP and thrilled to see that there is a Knitters Team! I have been spending a lot of time over the past few days figuring out this web site. At first I was overwhelmed, so I just decided to peek at the page every now and then. Now I think I have the hang of it although still plenty to learn about how to use it. Please visit my Spark Page to see my projects. I think you'll have to add me as a friend first, but I'll add you right away so you can have access. I'm 54, married for 31 years, have two grown sons (ages 22 and 20), and I'm a stay-at-home wife and mom. My hubby has been retired from the telephone company for 1 1/2 years. I absolutely love to knit cardigans, shawls, miniature Christmas tree ornaments, and hope to knit my first teddy bear soon for a fund-raiser auction. I'd love to see your projects, too! Knitting helps keep me out of the kitchen, but then I need to be there to cook healthy meals, too, so it's definitely a balancing act. God bless you all! Oh, did I mention that I absolutely hate to exercise? So I'm taking up the "walk 60 minutes a week" goal. Here goes!

Hi all from Travelers Rest, SC. I'm 55,married for over twenty years and have a teenaged daughter at WADE HAMPTON High School in Greenville,SC. I have a small homestead where I grow all of our veggies, as well as for my Mom and the food bank. I am adding laying hens as soon as hubby finishes the chicken coop. We are also putting in a high tunnel cold frame and greenhouse. Hope to see you at the Travelers Rest Farmers Market. I started knitting two years ago after my carpel tunnel got too bad to sew. For Christmas this year I made 25 wash cloths, 2 sweaters, 1 pair of slippers, twenty scarves, and about twenty hats. This year I've knitted one scarf. My goal this year is - for the family - two sweaters, two blankets, twenty-five wash cloths, 5 pairs of mukluks, two purses, and a boat load of socks. For charity, well, whatever I have time and yarn for... probably hats and scarves because they use so little yarn.

Hi I'm from the lovely town of Carrboro, NC where I'm a current biology PhD student at UNC Chapel Hill with my fiance. I've been knitting for just about a year now but only seriously for the past 6 months. I'm trying to get in shape and lose some weight before my June 18 wedding as well as continue with my knitting this spring (the knitting part should be easy as I got a new KA bamboo interchangables set for my birthday a few days ago!!) It's great to see everyone here!

i am from the beautiful town of lake ozark, mo. we are lucky enough to have a huge lake with more shoreline then lake michigan. i am originally from cincinnati, oh. my grandmother, on my mother's side, always knitted amazing projects but she would never teach me how. she said she knitted the wrong way. it has been 15 years since she died. when i moved to the lake about 5 years ago, a locally owned store gave knitting lessons for free. i've knitted off and on ever since. i still consider myself a beginner because i tend to lose interest if the project takes too long. my biggest project to date was a decorative pillow cover. my friend recently knitted me a pair of socks that i seem to wear almost as soon as they are clean1 i guess that will be next on my list of knitting to learn1

Hi! I'm from Kimberly,Idaho. I have 8 adult kids and 15 grandkids. The oldest is grandkid is 8! April 2004 I decided that I wanted to learn to knit. Gathered up some yarn and needles and 3 days later I was in a car accident and severed the tendon in my knee. So I spent the next 3 months with my knee up and my hands filled with knitting needles! By the time I was better the knitting had me! I'm hooked! I knit every where all the time. But not on the treadmill! I'm sure I would fly off! I'm excited to back on the healthy living and exercise stuff! It always helps me feel better!

Hi All,
My name is Jayne and we recently relocated from California to Northern Idaho. I love it here. I am 43, married with one daughter who is 2.5. I've been knitting for almost 2 years and love it but consistency is not my middle name.

I am happy I found this group to keep me motivated with both my weight loss and my knitting during these winter months. Happy new year everyone!

Hi, I'm Crystal, I'm from MI, I'm 33, married 11 years, and we have a 9 year old daughter. I crochet mostly, but do a little knitting as well.

I can't really think of much more to say, I'm not good at these intro things.

Good morning to all. I live in the mountains of North Carolina, USA. I am married, have 3 daughters (1 step - 35, 1 foster - 16, and 1 "natural" - 15), 1 son-in-law, 2 grandsons (1 & 3), 1 dog and 1 cat.

I have been knitting for a long time - my grandmother taught me using pick-up sticks when I was about 7 or 8, which might explain why I like knitting socks.

I have been a member of SparkPeople before (and a member of this team) but needed a fresh start so deleted my old profile and have begun anew.

Hello, everyone! I am Tammy and I live in West Virginia. I began knitting about a month ago. I taught myself to knit from watching videos off of the internet. I have finished 2 scarves and I am currently working on my third. I love that my 8 year old daughter tries as well as my 11 year old son. I would love to learn this hobby in order to pass it down in my family. I look forward to chatting with everyone.
