Hi, Danae.

Maybe the "Separation of Church and Weight" avatar on your Spark Page will protect you from the religious fervor, much like crosses are supposed to ward off werewolves.

Hello, good Separators!

I am Danae, and I am also a little weary of the weird way in which many good SparkSters and SparkStresses have coupled religion - and "religiosity" - with weight loss/fitness. If for no other reason than to dissuade the "religionists" from bugging me, I've decided to join your wonderful team.

Hi ya'll. I'm new to SP and this team. I started to tell you about how this was the umpteenth diet attempt I've made, but then I decided I'm not gonna be on a diet this time, and besides, all those other attempts were just practice so I'd be ready when it was time to actually change my life.

So I'll just hang around for a while and see what develops. It is nice to find a place where heathens like me can feel welcome. My Bible Belt neighborhood can get a little constricting sometimes.

When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.

Howdy! As usual, I am fashionably late...

I've been (back) on SP for just over a year now. From October to April of 2009 I lost about 40 pounds, then just stopped trying. I maintained for a bit, then put back on about half of that. But I just never left SP, and I guess I'm just going to be the slowest little baby stepper there is in these here parts.

Right now I'm in a cycle of getting excited and losing 5 pounds and then derailing myself with laziness, injury or illness (this week it's illness). I feel a bit like I'm trying to hand-crank an old propeller plane - just when you think you've got it up and running, it sputters and conks out again. But I'm working some things out in my head, and I THINK I'll be able to get her running and keep her moving - as soon as I can breathe again. LOL

I'm reading a different Martha Beck book right now ... and can't help applying her suggestion: add "in the bathtub" to the hymn titles ... which brings us to "Jesus on the main line in the bathtub".

Sigh.

Oh. Welcome! I'm the team nut.

Hi, everybody! I was just checking this team out (you know how you follow links sometimes and they magically put you where you need to be?) and I saw Barbara_Boo "singing" "Jesus on the Main Line" in the huddle. It was love at first sight and I joined right away! I'm not without religion, but I don't like having other people's crammed down my throat. It thrills me to be here. Thanks!

Hey Ya'll - just jumping in here that 8 glasses of water is really a "guideline" and not a hard and fast rule. You can count tea (I count my herbal tea, chai, green tea, whatever I'm drinking) and water as well as any recovery sports drink I may do (G2, HEED, etc.).

You can add the Crystal Light packets or the Green Tea to Go - that all counts.

Yesterday I drank 20+ ounces of FRS Diet AntiOxidant Health Drink - and that all counts.

The reason that they tell us to drink water is to have it replace sodas, even diet, and juices. So drink what you can, don't over-hydrate (that's very dangerous) and when you are thirsty have a drink.

OH - that whole thing that if you wait to drink when you're thirsty you have waited too long and you are dehydrated is not really true for your every day person. Maybe in the Sahara or Gobi or somewhere like that - but not for most of us. It isn't true that if you wait to eat when you're hungry you're already starving - why would thirst be any different - KWIM?

Welcome, LISA. I think water's important, too. After a few months of making sure I was drinking enough of it, I noticed that it's really a better thirst quencher than anything else. And when I get out of breath practicing fast dances, I grab the water bottle and I'm able to breathe again.

Welcome back, Linda! And welcome, Lisa! Good to see the two of you on here!

Linda, it's awesome that not only have you got back to goal, you now have company on the healthy journey! Yay you and your husband for going it together!

Lisa, water is one of those things that if it gets to be a habit, your body will remind you when you need more. I know there are purists on SP, but I'd say, do whatever it takes to up that water intake: add flavourings (preferably not sugar!), or just up your intake of green tea or whatever. From what I've read, that 8 cup minimum doesn't even have to be all liquids, it can come partly from water-rich foods like watermelons and the like! But plain water is definitely the easiest for me. :)

Cheers,
Maya

BTW: I think that drinking 8 glasses of water is easy in theory, but very hard in practice! I really struggle with that one.

Hi everyone! My name is Lisa and I'm also trying to stay warm in Houston! Some days there isn't much difference btw here and Ohio where I'm originally from. I joined up last October and did really well for awhile and then burned out on nutrition tracking. Right now, I'm concentrating on drinking 8 cups of water a day (I know it's easy but I wasn't doing it) and fitness with the January boot camp. I hope to get back to nutrition tracking soon.

Happy New Year everyone! I joined in Spring 2007 to get in shape for a trip to England - then when I reached my goal, I stopped everything I had been doing to lose the weight, and - surprise! - I gained it back! Granted, it was only 10-12 pounds, but on my body that's a lot. So I got on SP again, and lost the weight again, and I feel so much better now!
What's different this time?
1)I have gotten in the habit of doing strength training every workday. This is the longest I had ever stuck with an exercise regime.
2)I had all my good clothes altered to my new size, and donated the larger clothes not worth altering, so I have no clothes to wear if I gain weight.
3)I have re-trained myself to recognize and eat appropriate portions of food, and finally realized that I can't eat as much as my husband and still maintain my optimum weight.
And, 4)my husband has started exercising as part of a plan to lower his blood pressure, so we have started exercising together. All indoors, right now - I don't do cold. This morning at 7:45am it was 12 degrees F and I shivered just looking at the thermometer from inside...This group is the best one on SparkPeople, and so this is where I hang out.

It's great to meet you, DANALEA. Congrats on your weight loss and on the 2 years you kept it off.

This sounds familiar to many of us: "Then I slowly starting gaining it back by simply not paying attention to what I was eating. I've been "back" since the end of last summer, but not really taking it seriously."

It's often difficult to begin again with the same passion as before. It sounds like you're on your way to using the success from your past to fuel your potential.

We're not fond of resolutions, either, since they are usually so short-lived.

Keep in touch and let us know how the boot camp is going. Brrr! Who knew Houston ever got cold?

I'm new to this team, Hello everyone!! LOL

My name is Dana (Lea is my middle name) and I've been a member of SP since Late summer 2006. I lost 35 lbs between then and April 2007. And kept it off for about 2 years. Then I slowly starting gaining it back by simply not paying attention to what I was eating. I've been "back" since the end of last summer, but not really taking it seriously.

I don't do resolutions, but I happen to find a GREAT deal on one month of Body Boot Camp and had my first session last night. I'm a little sore and will get sorer as the 24 hour mark gets closer. Next session is tomorrow night. It's outdoor (yuck!) and while it's not as cold here as other places in the US, 44 is Houston is DAMN cold for me!

But I'll stick with it for the whole month, and track my food, and see where I stand at the end of January.

I love this team because of the smart, funny, non-judgmental people here. That's what makes the team work so well. Coolest people on earth!!!

I joined SparkPeople in January of 2008. I had already lost quite a bit of weight, with the help of my doctor and lots of dance classes, when my oldest daughter sent me a link to SparkPeople. I started devouring the articles.

I WAS a champion yoyo dieter, as you will see in my photo gallery. I taught Weight Watchers for 5 years back in the 1970's. My progress HERE deals mainly with unlearning dieting mentality. I'm getting great at maintaining, as I work to ease my weight down to a permanent number in the 130's, which will be 100 lbs lower than my highest weight that I know of, since I didn't always get on the scale.

I used to bounce between 138 and 238 with great regularity (hard core binge eater). I no longer binge, and I haven't been more than a lb or two above 180 since joining SparkPeople (even during my worst relapse into the bad habits that I'm working to break forever). I'm using Martha Beck's ideas to help me train my brain to think like a person who maintains a healthy weight without obsessing about food.

You all help me keep my FIRE going. It's comforting to be in an environment without that other kind of fire-talk, the "fire and brimstone" sermons about "behaving" or "going to he77".
emoticon
My DH is home today, playing guitar and trying to get a fire going in the fireplace. It keeps turning into embers, which is frustrating him. He just now grinned and said, "It's hard to keep your fire going when you're picking guitar. Too distracting." Ain't it the truth?!!!

I hope 2010 turns into a BLAZE OF JOY for this entire team.

I'm more of a semi-regular, since I mostly just hang out on the one thread. :)

I've been an SP-er for a couple of years now (yeah, I joined SP just after New Year ... NO, I don't do resolutions, it was just a coincidence, based on seeing SPGuy's comment on a tech blog!) ... and a member of this team for a while - maybe six months? I *love* this team and it's one of the *very* few that I'm still active on now that life has got really busy.

I'm liking the no-stress, no-guilt approach to weight-loss that I've been indulging in, and this team really does reflect that same spirit, which is what makes it tick.

That, and the completely irreverent comments from many of us on the boards ... really helps put the fun back even in the most stressful day! ;)

Cheers,
Maya

Nice idea, Penguin.

I'm Jazzie (but this team knows that I'm really Jana..and Jazzie is my 9 year old yellow lab). I joined in April. My weight history is simple: I went from skinny for 35 years, to middle-sized in my early 40s, to OH OH...I'm OVERWEIGHT by late 40s. Never having dealt with weight loss before in my life I have learned a lot here. The nutrition tracker is the key for me. I do love to exercise...in moderation (hee hee).

I'm on a few other teams, but this one fits me perfectly and it's here that I am at home. Boo is terrific and I think the people on this team are the smartest and most supportive (funny, inspiring, I could go on...) out there.

My plan is to be at my goal weight by St. Patty's Day. That's a very slow rate of loss, but I am planning on it lasting for the rest of my life!

My highest weight was about 170# which I achieved soon after graduating from college. Dieting ensued. Art Ulene's walking/low fat diet was my first (and this is also when I started being active), a few years later it was Weight Watchers (and this is when I started running and doing strength training). Both diets got me down to my current weight. With WW, I maintained for 3 years until middle age, fibroids, and hormones hit. I went back to weight loss points and in desperation went back to my first books when I lost the weight and duplicated my food and exercise, nothing happened.

Then I discovered SP in Feb this year and it has helped me (slowly) lose the weight through calorie counting.

I found this group (I don't remember when... maybe May?) and I haven't looked back. I've really only been active on one other group but the religious references there drive me crazy. This group introduced me to Martha Beck.

Now I'm in the process of changing my thought processes so I can maintain for life with Martha Beck's book, "The Four-Day Win". I'm already seeing progress on how I handle food and emotional eating.

5/07 start date- have lost over 75 pounds since my start date w/ Spark. I went from walking 1 mile and being sore for 3 days, to walking up to 8 miles and being ready for anything afterward. I'm trying to train for a 12K in May- my 3 year anniversary. Knees & hips sometimes slow me down in the cold and rain.
Gawd is not a good calorie counter--- love the site & this team.

I've been here 2 years this month. I've lost 56 lbs. and would like to lose 10 or 15 more but seem to be at a standstill for the last year. (Sometimes I gain a few, but get them right back off)
I'm getting good at maintaining anyway.
I truly feel I've come to a lifestyle change mentality. I work out regularly and eat pretty healthy about 90% of the time.
edit: forgot to tell why I'm on this team. Same reason as you guys!
I won't be having any New Year's resolutions, I have nothing else to give up!

Back to add to the long story I didn't tell, and I'm NOT endorsing this show, but Monday Jan. 4th Dr. Oz's topic is New Year's Resolutions - NOT, or something like that. It's on the Fox network and shows at different times of day.

I'm convinced I have to eat differently, but don't want the New Year's thing to sabotage my efforts.

Weight "history or progress" - COOL. I'll save the long story for a blog. I've been here since May, and echo Penguin's last paragraph for why this team.

emoticon Swifturtle's my alter ego, Kathy's my name.

My weight's up 3 lbs. since I started here, now 185. One day, forgetting it would post on the friend feed, I entered a 4 lb. loss, to see what it would look like. emoticon I didn't confess until now.

Thought I'd start a reintroduction thread as we get close to the end of the year.

Name, how long you've been here, weight history or progress, why you are on this team.

I go by Penguin here.

I've been on SparkPeople for 2.5 years, but a few months after I joined I got pregnant with my second. This year I came "back" (didn't really feel like I was gone) and became active on this team.

I'm down over 20 pounds since September, when I started doing the things that moved the scale downward. I was at my highest weight, which I've visited a couple of times now.

I like this team because out there in Spark world I sometimes feel bombarded by messages about the christian deities. I'm not sure what it is about a weight loss site that brings that on; or maybe it's just the way the world is now and I'm insulated from much of it in my regular life. At least on this team there's less of that offensiveness. Plus, Boo is an enthusiastic (cheer)leader.
