Welcome MJ! I'm somewhat new here too, but have wormed my way around and love it. It's nice to know there are a lot of like-minded people out there...even if not next door.

I actually really enjoyed the older folks at the group meetings.I think we were a novelty to each other. For them it was having young people in the group that was so novel and for us it was hearing older people talking about reason over religion.

What really made the group not work for us was a lack of activity. It was really more a social support group than a group oriented to a particular goal, like getting out the message that atheist is not synonymous with devil incarnate.

The older folks really were not interested in doing a food drive or volunteering. That wasn't what they got together for, and that was ok. It just wasn't a good fit for us.

You do not refute that which is patently stupid. Dr. Q. S. Lee

I have noticed a similar age thing among humanist groups, not that I have participated much. (I did know some younger people who met and got married through one). At my UU congregation there used to be this groupthink that the younger people (meaning my folk) wanted more "god" in the talks. I was baffled. I KNEW the younger folk, I was among the LEADERS of the younger folk. We didn't. I think people just get this perception and then go with it. But there was certainly a Baby Boomers vs Youngers mentality to figuring each other out. And the humanist groups tended to be Baby Boomers and older.

Now that I'm over 40 I see backwards and forwards a little more equally.

you really are in a conservative part of the state. But you are close to Cleveland and there are some leftier groups up there. I am sure there must be a big humanist community and I know there are several active UU congregations, North Shore being the biggest of them, I believe.

Well then, allow me to introduce you around! :)

I am in the Akron area but work for a Columbus based non-profit so I am in Col. at least once a month. I really like that city!

My husband and I tried a Humanist Org up here but it didn't really suit us. We were the youngest there by at least 30 years, no exaggeration (we're in our 30's).

I'd like to find a humanist group around here that is really active in the community. Secular organizations are not well represented in the non-profit arena.

Very welcome. You used a word I bet the dictionary here choked on and caused your computer to reboot over. :)

I wonder what the Christian Living group would think of dropping that one in there ...

Welcome ... which reminds me, I think I stealth joined this group.

Steph - I haven't attended any of the UU meetings so I bet we don't know each other. Which UU church do you go to?

I am in Columbus, OH too and attend the UU congregation there. Kris, might we know one another in RL? I don't often attend Humanist Community Events, but do on occasion and know there is lots of overlap between UU abd Humanist Communities.

MJ44223 - I am also in Ohio! What part are you in? I'm in the Columbus area and I participate in the Humanist Community of Central Ohio from time to time. It's nice to be able to talk to people who are like minded without the fear of being judged. Welcome!

Hi,

I've been called a he-thurn many times, by my relatives in Tennessee. I live "up north" in Milwaukee. We welcome "such as you" here. It's great to meet you.

I think you'll enjoy the people here. We try to help one another push that rock up the mountain. Two steps forward and one step back. We have team goals, challenges, games and chats to help us get acquainted while we work toward healthier weights and lifestyles. Join in, with any of it that appeals to you.

Anytime those neighbors of yours get on your nerves, you can vent here.

Great to "meet" you!! I know what you mean about finding yourselves in a minority. I live in a very small town- just moved here 10 years ago- and I'm still going through religious culture shock! :-) You're in great company here! :-)

I am so happy to find a community I can better relate to. I am in conservative Ohio where my atheist family and I find ourselves in a minority. (It is off-putting to have to explain why one is not out raping and killing people if one does not believe in a god or an afterlife to so many True Believers).

I am very new to chatting on line (I tend to be a bit antisocial in real life, and have a hard time fathoming being social by myself at my computer) but am really reaching out to get and keep myself motivated for this Sisyphean battle to reach my goal weight..

I look forward to meeting you all as we exchange messages! mj
