About the SDA men wanting their women to obey them... I think that's pretty individual. There are plenty of SDA's who are progressive and actually my mom dominates my dad. Obey is not in her vocabulary...

The godtalk is pretty extensive with my mom. My dad never brings it up and he never asks me to go to church with them. He probably knows how I feel about that... The funny thing is that my mom does know how I feel because I told her years ago but that doesn't stop her from saying whatever she wants... My parents both believe in separation of church and state and are pro-choice (I hope I'm not starting anything here).

And on the other topic, I'm not "out" to my family, either. Though I did read on my brother's FB page that he is agnostic. My mother is a Baptist who has always believed in separation of church and state. My sister has become Episcopalian in recent years, marrying someone who is the stepson of a minister. But I think I could stomach coming out about it after my grandparents are gone. They're the staunch Southern Baptists. I just never felt the need to make them worry about my soul.

It helps that in my family religion is not a topic of frequent conversation. If I were around people inserting godtalk into every exchange, I'd have a different urgency in getting them to stop. It's just very rare in our family culture.

I used to have a spot of admiration for the 7DAs. It was the clean-living thing. I knew one who [claims to have] cured her own cancer through healthy eating and prayer. She wrote a book about it. If I hadn't known her personally I would have dismissed such a statement out of hand.

But, one of my BFFs has a brother who is 7DA. I'm getting a very different picture from her family. He's now moved to northern Canada to live for ten years as a missionary. There's a lot of emphasis on his wife and kids "obeying" him.

Overall it's just puzzling to me, as an outsider.

I love food shopping at the Adventist stores. GREAT veggie options!

And there's an adventist soul food restaurant in Atlanta that's just divine.

So to speak.

I worked for a 7th Day Adventist Hospital in Portland...and had my 3rd baby there. I ate healthy veggie food for my maternity stay. It has always seemed rather akin to my LDS upbringing for some reason. Both came from the American religious ferver of the 19th century me thinks.

It's fascinating, to me, to see where we all came from...and how far we have come!

Oh, a Double Dose! I feel for you! In my family, it was the fundamentalist Church of Christ vs. the Southern Baptists, but only in the extended family.

My best friend was a 7th-Day Adventist, and she had to be home by sunset on Friday, and couldn't play on Saturday.

Wow! Welcome to all the new peeps! Nicetomeetcha...

My dad and his side of the fam were/are Adventists, too, and mum was Baptist. Before my parents divorced, I sometimes wound up at church all weekend long - whenever mom decided I might be learning "weird" things from dad's church.

And, hey N. Florida, I'm in Mouseville! Howdy neighbor!

I was raised mostly vegetarian and I certainly like my vegetables. I'm going for longevity, myself... I get life-extension magazine, etc... I do eat some meat now though not every day. When my parents visit I always make them vegetarian food. I could be a vegetarian but my s/o loves meat!

BTW, love that Joe Walsh song

We are an enlightened bunch! Welcome!

Adventists are known for their healthy-living habits -- you have that going for you. Are you a vegetarian?

The mostly-adventist town in California (Loma Linda?)is one of the "Blue Zones" -- longest-living people. I saw their supermarket on TV, with all the healthy produce and bulk products, for eating habits the rest of us (hmmmm) are just working on changing to -

I just found you! How refreshing, a godless, diet forum. I think I'm home too! I live in North Florida, the bible belt and I thought when I started on SP, for some unknown reason, that it'd be less god-centered. NOT! Until now! I consider myself an agnostic and was raised and Adventist (as in 7th day), my parents don't know how far I've fallen from the tree either! I keep my mouth shut at work because my beliefs are so different than theirs. It's going to be nice communicating with who I consider to be more enlightened folks. emoticon

Hi Jen,
I'm in nice, not-quite-as-liberal-as-Seattle, but still plenty liberal, Bellevue!

Ya I have some Mormom relatives in Tri-Cities, but they are distant and I don't know them...other than I know they're out there!

How do you like it there otherwise? Maybe someday you can move back to Seattle??

Jana, where are you in PNW? I grew up in nice, liberal, wonderful Seattle...and I was a conservative Christian. Then I moved to the uber-conservative, Catholic/Mormon mecca of the TriCities. Now I'm, well I don't know what I am, a Jen-ist I guess, but I am most definitely NOT conservative Christian LOL

Welcome, Jana! This is the 'ole home place for a bunch of us--- even though I do consider myself an Add-Gnostic, they let me play here.
I'm gonna get to be priestess soon! I'm practicing playing with my knife. Thinking about boiling some mice that the local cat catches and wearing some mouse skulls threaded through a thong. I'm going to have fun with that.... gotta dress up while nekkid.
this team lets us weirdo's play here, too. Thanks, crew!

One of my favorite TV shows is "Big Love", with Bill and his wives. Take notes when you wake from one of those nightmares. Maybe you could write a TV show or screen play.

It's so weird because my family is not aware of how far the fruit has fallen from the tree. They're all in Utah, so they don't see me NOT going to church. They know I don't. But they have no idea that I'm the A-word. A for athiest. Not even agnostic.

I love them all dearly, but just haven't been able to let them see the real me. Fortunately, I have a whole new "family" and friends of like mind. Though sometimes I have nightmares that I'm going to Mormon hell.

Oh my.

We all seem to survive our upbringing though, and are better people for it!

There you are! I just sent you a SparkMail. I'm glad you're getting to know your cool team mates.

I just learned something I didn't know. You're from western Michigan, COFFEEDIVA? I went to high school in Portage, MI and my first year of college was at Western Micighan University. I lived in the Kalamazoo area from age 9 to 20.

I have relatives in the south who were "called" to preach, in the Church of God Fundamentalist churches. Too weird. They say I'm a heathen (pronounced by them, hee thurn) because I'n an atheist and that I'm going straight to he77. Fine.

I knew I was home, too, when I found this team.

Two of my great uncles were Baptist "country preachers," and one of the high-achiever cousins is a Ph.D (in theology) in Colorado Springs, James Dobson land.

I'm here doing my best to "Keep Austin Weird."

I've just been reading through a few of the posting and this group is for me! I grew up in a lovely state in the west known for its radical religious group...the Beehive State. I have since left the state AND the religion behind and now live in the Great Northwest and LOVE it here (for going on 25 years, I had better love it!)

I hope to get to know many of you and suck up any motivation and help you can offer as well as give some back!

Thanks!
