Some local people who saw the photo say there were TWO critters in the photo -- one real alligator (at the right) and one kind of very large lizard or iguana at the left. Another person said it was an alligator. So, unless I go back and am able to get a better picture, it will remain a mystery. And I'm pretty sure I'd never find my way back to that part of the creek anyway.

RW - I tried to enlarge the photo so you could see the reptile's head, but it got pretty grainy. I would offer to go back and get a better picture, but I don't think I'm ready for that quite yet.

Thank you for the good news. Walking will definitely improve the circulatory system. When he starts walking and his heart starts pumping more blood to his legs, his circulatory system will say,"Hey,we need to build some new "roads' down here since the "traffic" is picking up. Tell him his legs are like a miniature Northport. More traffic(blood) more new roads(vessels). His legs will be a perpetual construction project, IF he walks.

How close are you to the brush fires?

Thanks for your good thoughts.

DH's surgery went well, even tho they couldn't do all they thought they would. They put 3 stents in his right thigh but couldn't do anything for the blockages below his knee because the veins were too small, too clogged, too brittle. However, the doctor assured us that the stents would help a lot and that if DH will walk and walk and walk, the body "magically" makes new blood vessels in the legs when it realizes some of them aren't working. Isn't that amazing?

Whatever it is, it is bigger than I wanted to deal with.

DH goes into the hospital tomorrow for either an angioplasty or stent implant in his right leg. His arteries are 90% blocked so it isn't happening any too soon. We're going to be at Peace River in Port Charlotte.

I'll be in the hospital with him all day, so probably won't be checking in til Friday.

I went for a walk today in Myakkahatchee Environmental Park. Got lost as usual, but happened upon an alligator (or some reptile). I put the photo on the Photo spot, so if you take a look and know what it was, let me know. I hurried away from it just in case it WAS an alligator. We Michiganders hardly ever see one of those on our walks in the park. LOL

Hey -- it must have worked. We saw some rain today on the way to Port Charlotte. Can't tell if any fell in North Port, though. It still looks pretty dry here.

We go back sometime around the end of April or early May. DH worries about the grass in Michigan overtaking the house.

Hi guys,
I spent a couple hours at Manasota Beach this morning and the wind was chilly but the sun really warmed it up, so it was great. We always have a lot of wind in March but it just seems cooler this year. Tomorrow I'm going to get my rain stick out and do a little dance. emoticon emoticon

I got mad at the pedometer, so I'm making it stay in the drawer. I used to wear it around the house and if I sat down for a few minutes, it would turn back to zero on me. Where I got your distance is from reading that 2000 steps is about 1 miles.

I'm glad the weather cooled off a little, since I'd rather not use the oven when it's hot out, so I got to bake chicken today. We have to start watching what we buy so we won't end up with lots of food when we leave, at the end of April. So I'm glad I got rid of that 4 lbs of chicken!

When do you head back up north?

Oh. I think my pedometer said 2.78 or something like that. My stride is probably shorter than yours. Anyway, I was pretty happy and surprised to learn that just going around doing regular stuff could get that high.

Hey, RW -- did you freeze at Manasota today? I am pretty much hibernating since the warm weather spoiled me.

I'm glad to see you back, too, RW. That photo of the beach is SO great. I think I'll post one of the Myakkahatchee River where SIL and I walked while she was here. Of course, I haven't been back on my own.

HAPPY ST.PATRICK'S DAY TO EVERYBODY(A LITTLE LATE!)

Hi R.W.! It's good to hear from you! I was getting worried about you but then I noticed that you're still blogging, so I'll have to find somebody else to worry about.

Pat, My DH gets up at 6:30 almost everyday to go bike riding and I usually sleep until 8. But now that the weather is warming up I have to get up earlier to go for my walks. So far the earliest I've managed to get out is 9 a.m.

When I go to the Y, I go as late as possible to get my whole workout in before they close at 9 p.m. For some reason I don't like to go earlier.

My DH got 1 silver and 1 gold medal at the Sarasota Senior Games and 2 golds in the Charlotte County games, all for cycling.

I wonder if they have Skeet shooting in the Senior Games! Pat, you would get the golds every time!

Hey there, Crew. I guess I'm supposed to tell you about the new opening page. You've already seen it, but one thing I'd like to see us start using is the PHOTO feature. You can upload photos for your other team mates to view and comment on. So, let's dust off those digitals and share some pictures. We have the prettiest area in the world.

If I don't get out early and do it, the day just takes over and I end up missing it. It happened today. I set the clock, but the dark day and comfy bed made me re-set it and I told myself I'd go later in the day since I didn't have anything else planned at the time. Well, activities got started and filled the day so no swimming.

Why do you have to go at 6:30 in the morning? That would be a real deal breaker for me. I don't sleep very well and I think I get my best sleep between 3-8. I have to get up at 6:15, 2 days a week to get ready for the class that I teach and that's enough for me. I have a threat of jury duty next week and I'm dreading it because it means getting up early every day. I'M SPOILED!

I never heard that it had a name, but I figured out that what goes in must be matched by activity. AND, I haven't been really great about the exercise lately, so I think that might be it. I really hate getting up in the dark to go swim but the walking isn't cutting it so I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and "swim under the stars" -- if it wasn't 6:30 a.m., that might sound romantic.

Did you ever hear of the "Set Point" theory? The premise is that you have reached a set point where your calorie input(food) and your calorie output(exercise) are in such a balance that you don't lose weight or gain weight. "They" claim that when this happens you have to do something to shake up your metabolism, like decreasing your daily cals by 250 a day or increasing the amount of cals you burn by 250 a day. I've weighed the same for the last 5 years(give or take 5 lbs)even though I want to lose 10 lbs, because I haven't made the commitment to myself to eat less. I'm better with the exercise than I am with the eating, but it's not enough to lose weight.

You did the remarkable job of losing 72 lbs so you probably know, more than anybody, how to shake things up and get off the plateau. I know you won't give up since you've come so far and this is just a temporary problem.

I am in a rut weight-wise. It's my first plateau, I guess, and I'm not happy about it. I want to be brave and not give up, but you know how that goes.

Sarasota County Fair starts tomorrow. You CAN go and walk and see a lot of sights, exhibits, entertainment (be sure to catch the pig races) withOUT ruining your healthy lifestyle. Remember the turkey drumstick is a low-fat meat choice and is very tasty. You can bypass the deep fried twinkies and elephant ears.

Hi, We moved to Portland OR after Hurricane Katrina. Then we moved to Vancouver WA right across the Columbia River. We bought a little townhouse here. It's nice here, but I certainly do not like the weather one bit. On clear days we can see Mt. Hood in OR and Mt. St. Helens over here.

Later I will tell you all about the storm damage we suffered from the "Santa Storms" as I've named them.

I've been losing weight finally and am down to 166.4
It looks like I'd better update my statistics.

Hi, Do you remember me, the one who was in Hurricane Katrina? We are in Vancouver, WA and I am finally losing weight.

How are those fires? Are any of you guys near?

I still have the clock in the car and the watch in my house to change.

Hope to hear from you.

Me, too. We've had that happen. One year when we were going home to MI in May, they blocked I-75 just after we passed I-4. Everyone after us had to go via I-95 and come back north of Savannah. We had to drive through the fires -- the air was actually BROWN. My poor cat in the back of the car kept coughing and sneezing. I felt terrible for all the cattle out in all that smoke and soot.

Not too close to the fires, but we can see the helicopters with their single buckets of water flying over now and then. You'd think in this day of high-tech, they could somehow figure a better way than bringing water one bucket at a time via helicopter for a raging brush or forest fire.

I waved, but there were 150 groups there. You likely missed the short red head behind the Coast Guard auxiliary boat.

I am not as clever as RW. The only things I have are photos. I DID manage to get a picture of Dorie from "Finding Nemo" to encourage me to swim regularly. It's on my Spark Page in the Photo Gallery. Sometimes when I need an extra push, I put it on my photo image.

Oh..I get some from microsoft clip organizer....you can also check out images on Google ...I create or add captions with a program. I use Paint.NET for that.
You just need to find the clips and then add a caption before you upload it to SparkPage.

You need to get pictures in your SparkPage. I went to your SparkPage and you don't have any. When you "edit SparkPage and then edit photo gallery., you'll see a place to upload pictures. You can upload pictures from your computer. After the pictures are uploaded you can select one of them to show as your photo image All from your Spark Page...then be sure to "save changes"

We're probably not going to do Warm M. Springs. It would cost us $40.00 and I wouldn't be going in the water. I'll just take my brother to the community or Y pools. They're almost free and he won't know the difference. emoticon

I hate to sound really STUPID but how do you get the little cartoons in your e-mails? I have to wait for my tech savy daughter to come down to even get a photo in there.

That's how I remember it too. Last time we went as a group and stayed and played around together. Most of us ate a small lunch at the cafe. I wear toe rings and didn't take them off, they tarnished right away in the mineral water, so be sure to remove all your jewelry.

All the employees are still employed and the Springs will remain open. The new owners are looking for a buyer. So, you can still go.

BUT, would your brother like it? That's another story. It is a fairly disciplined routine. You go into the water -- which is actually a small lake with a sandy/semi-weedy bottom. It smells of the natural minerals (think sulfur). Once in the water, the people all walk around in one direction until they decide to get out. They rest awhile and repeat the routine as many times as they want to. The clientele is mostly older Europeans (we didn't hear a word of English for about the first two hours we were there). Also, most of the people wear hats of all kinds while in the water; assumedly to protect against the sun. The ladies almost make a fashion show of it because the bonnets were lavish and quite fancy. The men mostly wore baseball caps.

There is a Polish cafe there where you can get lunch, but it is strictly Polish fare. Not a burger and fries place, but I'm sure it was good food. We brought our own Spark-type lunch and that is perfectly acceptable. You can rent a locker, which we did, but you don't need to since there is an outdoor changing stockade on the grounds. Very primitive. They have plastic chairs and some plastic loungers. You need to bring your own towels and/or covers for the chairs. You can bring your own chair, too, if you wish.

Hope this helps. We had a nice day, but only you know how your brother can handle crowds and strangers. I will try to answer any other questions if you have them.

Warm Mineral Springs Foreclosed on

Posted: Feb 17, 2009 04:34 PM EST

Updated: Feb 17, 2009 06:51 PM EST

NORTH PORT - Tuesday, North Port's only tourist attraction was officially foreclosed on. Warm Mineral Springs has a new owner, and the spring and spa's future is up in the air.
Its warm waters with minerals flow at a constant 87 degrees year-round. The spring is surrounded by buildings designed by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Many believe it's the fountain of youth sought by Ponce De Leon centuries ago. Well, on February 17th 2009, it's now been foreclosed on.

After nearly 10 years, owner Ed Ullman was unable to meet mortgage obligations. Court records show the final judgement was for more than $8.6 million.

Cypress Lending Group of Naples put in the only bid. They want the spring and its 21 employees to continue working as they are until they can find a buyer.

For now, the future of this historic spring is unknown.

My neighbor suggested that I take my special needs brother to Warm M. Springs, when he comes back down in a couple of weeks. She said it costs $18.00 with a AAA discount. What do you get for the money? I don't mind spending it if he will be able to benefit from it. What, exactly do you do while you're there?

Just popped in- will look into the Tech school - really need some facials, but, things are always so tight. This might do it. DOing home facials just doesn't pack the same effect for me.

CT- I don't know if you would like the phone number and address of Charlotte Technical Center in Pt Charlotte for the cosmetology dept. That's where I started getting manicures and pedicures, even a facial too. They also do all the hair services, but I haven't had any of that. It's a school and they have students doing the beauty services under close supervision. The rates are very reasonable.
You call and get an appointment

I go to local Dr's and Labs. I get my medical care anywhere, through Tricare for Life as US Army retired. Medicare and Tricare pay it all and my wife also is covered.

Do you use the Vet Clinic in Port Charlotte? My DH just went, yesterday, for his blood work and goes next week for his physical. Good luck with your test results! Keep us posted.

Pat, I read that there's going to be a Woman's Expo in Northport. It's too bad that there's no place to set out the Sparkpeople flyers. I've been passing them out in my exercise class and I'm bringing some to the Y. Maybe we'll pick up one or 2 new members.

Stay warm everybody! I think it's going to warm up by this weekend.

My 75 year old "special needs" brother was visiting from CT for 10 days and is now back in CT until he visits again in March. Now I can take my walks, go to the gym and get on the computer again.

If any of you have young children or visiting grandchildren I recommend Kidstar Park in PC. I took my brother there twice and he loved it, even better than the circus in Venice.

Pat, I'm glad you enjoyed the pool. The Y is also an option for the treadmills, etc., if we run into a few days of rain. Rain? What's that?

Running Water, I researched and bought a Weber charcoal grill but now I never use it. It always seems a waste to use all that charcoal for a couple of chicken breasts or hamburgers. I'm going to write to Weber and see if I can buy an insert to turn it into a "mini" grill. I really need to start using it since my DH warned me that I would never use it and we can't have him be right about that! emoticon

Me, too. And I don't think too many people do it down here. No one else I know does it.

In case you don't here from me as regularly, I am not so much MIA and MFT - missing for time. I have out of town company for a couple of weeks. She is my SIL and college buddy. We are having a heck of a good time but the end of the day finds me too pooped to participate, so my PC time is at a minimum.

We don't seem to have as much pep as we did when we were in college. Isn't that odd???? LOL
