1. Why are you on a kettlebell team?
I joined because I love working out with kettlebells and wanted to find a group focused on using bells to learn more moves and workout plans.

2. What is/are the name(s) of your bell(s)? I have a 4 lb kb, 8 lb Kb, 15 lb and 20 lb kb all from GoFit.

3. What do you hope to gain (or lose) by being here?
I hope to lose fat and get strong with kbs.

4. What is your biggest challenge? My biggest challenge is that I've had reoccurring knee and hip problems, balance issues, ITB inflammation. I have been to physical therapy twice for these problems and since I discovered kbs I have really improved. If only the physical therapists made me do swings and get ups!

5. How will you overcome that challenge? If I keep swinging and improving my TGU form I will keep getting stronger:)

Hello! I'm not new to SP and I'm not too new at KBs, but want to learn more. I saw a pink kb in WalMart one day and bought it out of curiosity. It had a free DVD in it by Danskin with Gin Miller. I fell in love with kettlebells and knew I had finally found the workout program for me. I've tried step aerobics, free weights, full body gyms, elliptical...just about everything. Nothing was working. I came to SP and started watching what I ate, learned alot about what I was doing wrong and started making changes and better choices. But the weight was still not moving. I have hypothyroidism and had my thyroid treated with radiation many years ago and that's when I started gaining weight. Even with diet changes and intense exercise, I still lost nothing. In December of '09, I took a drastic step to save my life and had a sleeve gastrectomy. I really didn't think it would work! But it did. After I was fully recovered is when I discovered kettlebells. And that's when I really started losing weight!

1. Why are you on a kettlebell team?
I joined so I can learn more moves and find some support for the days I feel tired and don't feel like exercising...motivation.

2. What is/are the name(s) of your bell(s)? I have a 4 lb Russian kb, 5 lb and 8 lb danskin (sandfilled) kb and my favorite, a 10 lb Russian Kb. Fri. I'm buying a second 10 lb.

3. What do you hope to gain (or lose) by being here?
I hope to continue to be motivated and hopefully motivate someone else. Learn more moves, develop better techniques.

4. What is your biggest challenge? My biggest challenge is that I've had complex lower back surgery and have a disc in my neck that needs surgery. I also have degenerative disc disease that often becomes painful but I have found more strength from KBs than any other workouts, which has given better mobility. Except on damp, rainy days. Nothing helps then!

5. How will you overcome that challenge? I've accepted the challenge. It's called life and I am going to swing the kb till the day I die. In fact, I'll take my kb with me! emoticon Long live the Swing!

You can see the reviews of both on Dragon Door. ETK gives info on all the basic moves and has a progression how you train in the beginning. ETK does include modifications for women.

From what I saw, FRWL has more workouts for the legs and less for the upper body.

I got ETK because it was required reading before RKC.

Maria,
What is the difference between enter the kettlebell and from Russia with tough love. I know the ETK is geared a little more towards guys and I think created a little more recent than the From Russia with Tough Love which is geared a little more towards women.

But I would love someone who has seen both to give their opinions on the differences.

Enter the Kettlebell (ETK) is the best and will give you a solid foundation for KB training.

Hello! I am so excited to join KB team here on Spark. I have trained with KB and trainer for over 2 years. After having a baby, I'm trying to get back into my diet and exercise routine. There is nothing about KB I DON'T LOVE! They transformed my body once and I'm on the path to do it again!
1. Why are you on a kettlebell team?
To be surrounded by like-minded people and learn and share KB knowledge!

2. What is/are the name(s) of your bell(s)?
I have a full set from 10-35lbs...they definately need a name! Hmmm...let me think about it (it will have to be good!)

3. What do you hope to gain (or lose) by being here?
I plan to loose 100 lbs and gain MY POWER BACK!

4. What is your biggest challenge?
Working out with my baby in the gym...he's becoming mobile. I can't believe I've been lazy with my workouts for almost a year!

5. How will you overcome that challenge?
My goal is to be where I was when I became pregnant by May and to be at my goal by Dec 25,2010

Finish Strong!

Hi,
I am new to SP and to this team, but not to kettlebells. I've been working out with kettlebells for about two years on-and-off and for the last 12 weeks consistently (hopefully it is a habit now!)

1. Why are you on a kettlebell team?
For motivation/inspiration

2. What is/are the name(s) of your bell(s)?
No names - never thought about it!

3. What do you hope to gain (or lose) by being here?
I hope by mixing kettlebells with some other light cardio and clean eating that I'll loose some weight and gain muscle. I do not have much natural upper body strength and kettlebells have helped me get stronger. They've also helped my lower body have a lot less "ripples and dimples!" :)

4. What is your biggest challenge?
Staying consistent in meal planning and counting calories. It seems I HAVE to count calories to loose weight :(

5. How will you overcome that challenge?
I am hoping that the flexibility of SP (being web-based) and motivation from all of you will help!

1. Why are you on a kettlebell team?
To learn more about kettlebells, how to use them, and how to gain strength from them. I just recently received one as a gift (I asked for it) and I am very excited. Unfortunately the instructions that came with it were limited.

2. What is/are the name(s) of your bell(s)?

3. What do you hope to gain (or lose) by being here?
Knowledge and strength

4. What is your biggest challenge?
My muscles seem to tire quickly when using kettlebells. I think because they require such different movements than I am used to.

5. How will you overcome that challenge?
Keep using it and build my strength. :-)

Hi, my name is Megan. I have been using kettlebells on & off with my personal trainer, who is a RKC instructor, since March. I love kettlebells and finding new & challenging workouts to do with them.

I recently got my first kettlebell. Her name is Zoya. With her help and the help of my family, trainer, myself and sparkpeople, I hope to gain insight, strength & knowledge and hope to lose my negative attitude, negative self image, and some weight. My biggest challenge is myself and my weak wrists. I hope to overcome this by being better to myself, surrounding myself with positive people and watching my wrists like nobody's business.

My Newbie Purpose is:
To blast off this fat!! I'm tired of being fat and not being able to find clothes that fit me outside of the "Women's" stores. I'm not that big, but I'm just a bit too big for XL in regular stores, and too small for the clothes in the "Women's" stores. So everything either looks too tight, or too loose and sloppy. UGH!

I want to shock the socks off my in-laws in June when we have our family reunion.

Also, I just want to learn proper KB form so my forearms will survive my new training regime and not to injure my back again. I'm tired of walking hunched over for the first 10 minutes of my day when I get out of bed, or get out of a chair.

I want to shrink my belly and build up my butt! and arms, and legs, and back, yadda yadda yadda! :)

The workout does include "lots of swings..overhead swings..squat w\overhead presses...and the list goes on...the only shortfall with the video to me is that it does not give strong instructions on proper techniques...I watched the video..then went online to learn and practice safe technique before attempting the video..I will say this...I am nowhere near able to do this complete workout...which pleases me because I have yet to find any workout that has challenged me to this degree.

I just looked at the video online. Does it include swings? The moves the youtube video shows isn't quite traditional KB exercises, that's why I asked.

The "Goddess" Video by Andrea DuCane is great. She goes over the fundamental KB exercises. It has structured workouts and then has some bonus add-ons.

I'm sure everyone is tired of hearing this from me, but I stick with the RKC recommendations. Learn to swing, do several hundred, then do some more. Throw in some Turkish get-ups and that's really all you need. Cleans and presses are great for upper body strength and eventually snatches are fantastic. But if all you had were swings, you'd be fine.

Thanks for the welcome.
Right now I am using "Shanahan's Kettlebell Boot Camp" dvd....It really kicks my butt!..It is simple and straight forward...and I can feel it over my entire body...especially my core...I swear my waist is noticeably smaller....In 2 to 3 months I will be looking for new dvd workouts...I think it is important to keep your body challenged. So if you have any advice..it would be most welcomed.
Regards.

Welcome to the team! What DVD are you using to workout with?

When I first started it I also thought it was amazing that I could feel and see differences right away. They really are quick and effective for that!

Hope you don't get bored with them. Check out dragondoor.com. They have great articles and you'll find that there's a lot to learn about them. That's why i love them-there's always more to learn and ways to improve.

Hey...I just picked up 2 of 10lb kettlebells and a dvd...have done the workout 2 to 3 times...and I can already see a difference in my body?...Love It! My main purpose is to sculpt my body...I don't need to lose weight..but the effects of gravity are starting to show.
I joined this goup because like so many of you out there...I am finding it difficult to find anyone who actually knows how to properly use kettlebells. Thanks to this forum..I have found some valuable instructional resources.
I call my bells "my big russian balls"...it makes me smile.
The biggest fittness challenge I face..is boredom..I am a fitness junkie..I collect every new gadget and try every new fitness phase..but stick with none.
I will try to overcome this by committing to using my kettlebell routine 3 times per week for 2 months and measuring all of my gains. I have never had the discipline to "write" anything down on paper and be accountable for it. Wish me luck!

Some gyms that have KBs don't necessarily have people who know how to properly use them. If they have trainers, ask them if they use the RKC (Russian Kettlebe Certification) hard style or the AOS (Art of Strength) style. Both are good and if they have the training will know how to use the KBs.

If they have trainers that don't have any certification behind them try to find someone who does. There a lot of trainers out there that think they know what they're doing but they don't. Sometimes a little knowledge can be dangerous.

Give KBs a go! You'll love them!

I've seen kettlebells used before on shows and online vids, including on Tim Ferriss' 4-hour blog. I have been wanting to try it out for a long time now. We're thinking of joining a gym this week and would really love it if they had kettle bells there.

Hi All:

I found kettlebells about a month ago and I am in love. I work out at a kettlebell gym, gymcondition, in Atlanta 3x a week, try to jump on the treadmill 2x a week and randomly love my 8kg and 12kg kettlebells at home.

I HATE to exercise and love food, hence why I weigh 230lbs. I've tried every exercise out there in an attempt to find something I could tolerate, but I never expected to find something I LOVE - it may be borderline obsession.

Now, I just need to get my diet under control in an attempt to get this weight off and lean up!

Hello,
I started with kettlebells about 6 years ago in RI with Anthony at the original Punch Gym, I get there a few times a year. I have done CKT with Steve Cotter, good program. I work out alone 4ish times a week at home as there are no local classes. I am also a long time yoga teacher.
I'm still trying to lose a few more pounds, and am always looking to spice up my workouts, also would like to be more accurate in calculating calories burned.
I love my kettlebells, wish I had people to work out with!

put your kettlebell exercises in circuit training, that is the closest that we can find to use. From everything I have read on here and elsewhere it is fairly accurate for the calories burned per time period. Have fun with the kettlebells, they are addicting!

Hello
I am very interested in kettlebells. But how do you track calories burned in the fitness tracker. If not how do you track calories and such?

Thanks
Linda

Hey there welcome to the team! As everyone has said before, check out you tube for workouts or artofstrength.com but stick with RKC instructors or Anthony DiLuglio. they will get you going correctly as there are a lot of yahoos out there who are sort of right but can get you hurt with sort of right movements. You can also search around the net for Enter the Kettlebell in pdf, I found the first 50 pages or so for free and that started me out before I got the whole book. Good luck and welcome!

There are SOOO many things you can do with KBs that the list could be endless. However, the best, and first, place to start is the swing. The swing is the core movement for everything and a challenge as well. I agree that there are great online sources but do the research as Liz suggested. What sizes are you starting with? Also, did you search to see if there are any RKC instructors in your area? It would be worth the money to invest in a session and have someone show you proper form and technique.

Welcome!!

A really great training method for the TGU is to use a shoe on your hand. Balance your gym shoe on a closed fist and practice doing the TGU. It forces you to keep your arm straight and aligned, otherwise, the shoe will drop off. You also get used to the movement and it begins to flow together better. Then, when you're ready for weight, you have a better sense of your body working together.

Youtube is a great resource, but be careful to search for trainers who are RKC. There is a lot os useless (even dangerous) stuff out there, too. Also, Anthony Dilugliio has great videos on his website (below). Welcome to the team!!

1. Why are you on a kettlebell team?
I'm brand new to kettlebells, so I have a lot to learn. I've bought 2 DVD's based on recommendations of this team, and can't wait to get started.

2. What is/are the name(s) of your bell(s)? We aren't on a first-name basis yet, since they just joined me yesterday, so for now they are simply called the 10 pounder and the 15 pounder.

3. What do you hope to gain (or lose) by being here? Gain: muscular strength and endurance, more fitness through whole body exercise. Lose: weight.

4. What is your biggest challenge? Arthritis of the knees and spine. But the more I move the better I feel.

5. How will you overcome that challenge? Doing the kettlebells will balance out my routine more. I've been biking a lot this summer, and the cardio has been good for me. But I need to do more for strength than ab work and chest presses at the gym.

My name is Laurie and was a member of this team months back but never got started with my kettlebell. I had my first kettlebell instruction with a certified instructor this morning and my head is swimming. I am trying to get my hips ahead of my arms with the swing but I will get there. Everything is so funky and different thatn anything I have ever done. I really want to succeed with learning kettlebells because of the quality of wotkout you get. Just this morning while learning the very basics my sweat glands were working overtime.

1. Why are you on a kettlebell team? I joined this team so I can ask questions with folks who know the answers. I have found there are lot of folks that have no clue what a kettlebell is.

2. What is/are the name(s) of your bell(s)? I have not quite bonded with my kettlebell but "you SOB" was entering my head while I was first handling the thing.

3. What do you hope to gain (or lose) by being here? I want to strengthen my core from my thighs to my abs with my arms in between. I want a workout that is effective and uses for cardio First getting the breathing right and second getting my hips to do the work and not my arms while swinging.

5. How will you overcome that challenge? By using the techniques my instructor taught me. That breathe in during the first half of the swing and blowing it out forcefully second half of the swing. Also getting my hips ahead of the cart sort of thing. I was swinging the KB with my arms and was not effectively thrusting my hips forward. I did it correctly at times so I know how it feels.

Matt also taught me the Turkish get-up slao and OMG! that will do the trick nicely when I get really good at it. Take that thighs and abs!

My next session is Tuesday so before then I will work on the skills I was taught this morning.

1. Because there really aren't any people in my area who use them (or at least that I know of!).

2. HHaven't named my kettlebell!

3. I hope read up, learn from other people, and use that to help myself to do better!

4. Remembering to spend quality time practicing my kettlebell exercises!

5. Making it a part of my day; leaving my kettlebell at work and using it before I eat lunch. Later on I plan to get another one to leave at home.

I'd been using a TotalGym and just got bored with it.

Kettlebells are supposed to combine cardio and strength training (I detest cardio) so I figured if I can get the cardio in at the same time.....

I'm (ugh) 52 and in pretty good shape. Bought a 25 lb. kettlebell to start. Way too heavy so I've dropped it down to 15. It doesn't have a name.

Hope to whittle down the middle as I have a few unappreciated lbs.there.

Swing Like You Mean It- RKC Style

Currently swinging either a single 55 lb. or two 25 lb'ers.

1. Why are you on a kettlebell team?

Looks like a great place to get information. Got the GoFit Kettlebell and bought the IronCore level one and two dvds. What a great total body workout. I want more.

2. What is/are the name(s) of your bell(s)?

No names yet. Never even thought of that. Sounds cute.

3. What do you hope to gain (or lose) by being here?

Good information and great tips on getting in better and better shape.

4. What is your biggest challenge?

I like to workout everyday. Weekend workout are relatively short. But I just hate sitting down. I'd rather be working out right now than typing this missive. I'm thinking 30 min on the elliptical and 15 min in the pool sounds real good right now.

5. How will you overcome that challenge?

Only through incapacity AND old age. :-)
Otherwise I'm going out like Jim Fix.

Thanks for the welcome (and the warning)! I think I will start doing the Iron Core video I got instead of the Gin Miller...I can tell I'll be bored with her soon anyways. :D

9 bucks is a great deal for a 10 lb kb! Soon you'll be getting a heavier one anyway, so good not to blow too much as you are gaining strength. There are lots of great dvds for not too much money, too. (Iron Core, for example) and then even more when you are ready to start shelling out the big bucks (AOS, etc - I haven't taken that plunge yet). Be careful with that Gin Miller dvd - some of her form is pretty sketchy. Check out some of the threads on here for great advice on getting started - and welcome again to the team! :)

1. Why are you on a kettlebell team?

My mother (a fitness nut) has tried KBs and said it really worked her butt. I found a 10lb KB and DVD by Gin Miller at Goodwill the other day and for 9 bucks I thought it was a steal! I like to mix up my workouts and only like "real" workouts.

2. What is/are the name(s) of your bell(s)?

haha. I like this. I'm thinking "Blue ball"

3. What do you hope to gain (or lose) by being here?

I hope that I gain strength. Just from 2 workouts I am feeling muscles I know I normally don't reach. Lost weight is always nice too. :)

4. What is your biggest challenge?

I get bored with my workouts easily so I hope that I can find enough variety with KBs.

5. How will you overcome that challenge?

Look at other KB group member's workouts and find other resources online to keep it interesting.
