SRYAN02;

Honey , I consider all my girl friends I have met and made friends on these posting sites as my girlfriends.
We have gotten to know each other pretty good and we share so much with each other. So you do have girlfriends and all over the country or the world, as we have some from other countries as well.

So don't say woe is me I don't have any girl friends.

I'm always here for you sister, so don't forget that.

I will do that before I try to grow them. Saffron is prohibitively expensive. It comes in tiny packets with only a few strands.

Be careful which crocus you use because one is edible and one is not.
Do a google search "Cooking with Crocus" and get some information.

Saffron. It is something commonly called "Autumn Crocus" in USA, I believe. The scientific name is Crocus sativus.

I have used Goldenseal for years and I do like what it can do for us but I won't go so far as to say I "like" it because it taste BAD. I use it in capsule form unless I am making an eye wash. Native Americans use it in a tea and since I come from that lineage I should be able to do that but I's rather not. I use turmeric in capsules too. Just so much easier and easy always suits me.

I like turmeric. I have never tried golden seal. Turmeric is known as being good for anaemia. I use it instead of saffron in rice dishes and as a colouring, and medicinally. Saffron is very expensive. If I grow crocus can I use the stamens medicinally. Is there a special sort or are they all the same? Does anybody know?

Goldenseal
Source:NCCAM Herbs at a Glance

This fact sheet provides basic information about the herbA plant or part of a plant used for its flavor, scent, or potential therapeutic properties. Includes flowers, leaves, bark, fruit, seeds, stems, and roots. goldenseal—common names, uses, potential side effects, and resources for more information. Goldenseal is a plant that grows wild in parts of the United States but has become endangered by overharvesting. With natural supplies dwindling, goldenseal is now grown commercially across the United States, especially in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Common Names—goldenseal, yellow root
Latin Name—Hydrastis canadensis
What It Is Used For
Historically, Native Americans have used goldenseal for various health conditions such as skin diseases, ulcers, and gonorrhea.
Now, goldenseal is used for colds and other respiratory tract infections, infectious diarrhea, eye infections, and vaginitis (inflammation or infection of the vagina). It is occasionally used to treat cancer.
It is also applied to wounds and canker sores, and is used as a mouthwash for sore gums, mouth, and throat.
How It Is Used
The underground stems or roots of goldenseal are dried and used to make teas, liquid extracts, and solid extracts that may be made into tablets and capsules.
Goldenseal is often combined with echinacea in preparations that are intended to be used for colds.
What the Science Says
Few studies have been published on goldenseal's safety and effectiveness, and there is little scientific evidence to support using it for any health problem.
Clinical studies on a compound found in goldenseal, berberine, suggest that the compound may be beneficial for certain infections—such as those that cause some types of diarrhea, as well as some eye infections. However, goldenseal preparations contain only a small amount of berberine, so it is difficult to extend the evidence about the effectiveness of berberine to goldenseal.
NCCAM is funding research on berberine, including a study to understand the mechanism by which it may act against tumors.
Side Effects and Cautions
Goldenseal is considered safe for short-term use in adults at recommended dosages. Rare side effects may include nausea and vomiting.
There is little information about the safety of high dosages or the long-term use of goldenseal.
Although drug interactions have not been reported, goldenseal may cause changes in the way the body processes drugs, and could potentially increase the levels of many drugs. However, a study of goldenseal and indinavir, a drug used to treat HIV infection, found no interaction.
Other herbs containing berberine, including Chinese goldthread (Coptis trifolia) and Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium), are sometimes substituted for goldenseal. These herbs may have different effects, side effects, and drug interactions than goldenseal.
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid using goldenseal. The berberine in the herb may cause the uterus to contract, increasing the risk of premature labor or miscarriage. Berberine may also be transferred through breast milk, causing life-threatening liver problems in nursing infants.
Goldenseal should not be given to infants and young children.

I did a web search and the plant looks entirely different from goldenseal. Below is more info:

This fact sheet provides basic information about the herbA plant or part of a plant used for its flavor, scent, or potential therapeutic properties. Includes flowers, leaves, bark, fruit, seeds, stems, and roots. turmeric—common names, uses, potential side effects, and resources for more information. Turmeric, a shrub related to ginger, is grown throughout India, other parts of Asia, and Africa. Known for its warm, bitter taste and golden color, turmeric is commonly used in fabric dyes and foods such as curry powders, mustards, and cheeses. It should not be confused with Javanese turmeric.

Common Names—turmeric, turmeric root, Indian saffron

Latin Names—Curcuma longa

What It Is Used For
In traditional Chinese medicineA whole medical system that originated in China. It is based on the concept that disease results from disruption in the flow of qi and imbalance in the forces of yin and yang. Practices such as herbs, meditation, massage, and acupuncture seek to aid healing by restoring the yin-yang balance and the flow of qi. and Ayurvedic medicineA whole medical system that originated in India. It aims to integrate the body, mind, and spirit to prevent and treat disease. Therapies used include herbs, massage, and yoga., turmeric has been used to aid digestion and liver function, relieve arthritis pain, and regulate menstruation.
Turmeric has also been applied directly to the skin for eczema and wound healing.
Today, turmeric is used for conditions such as heartburn, stomach ulcers, and gallstones. It is also used to reduce inflammation, as well as to prevent and treat cancer.

How It Is Used
Turmeric's finger-like underground stems (rhizomes) are dried and taken by mouth as a powder or in capsules, teas, or liquid extracts. Turmeric can also be made into a paste and used on the skin.

What the Science Says
There is little reliable evidence to support the use of turmeric for any health condition because few clinical trials have been conducted.
Preliminary findings from animal and laboratory studies suggest that a chemical found in turmeric—called curcumin—may have anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties, but these findings have not been confirmed in people.
NCCAM-funded investigators are studying the active chemicals in turmeric and their effects—particularly anti-inflammatory effects—in people to better understand how turmeric might be used for health purposes.

Side Effects and Cautions
Turmeric is considered safe for most adults.
High doses or long-term use of turmeric may cause indigestion.
In animals, high doses of turmeric have caused liver problems. No cases of liver problems have been reported in people.
People with gallbladder disease should avoid using turmeric as a dietary supplementA product that contains vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and/or other ingredients intended to supplement the diet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has special labeling requirements for dietary supplements., as it may worsen the condition.

The Indians put a spoonful of tumeric into a cup of milk and drink it when they have hurt themselves. I dont think it is the same as goldenseal. We call it turmeric in England and in India it is called haldi.

I have never heard that goldenseal and tumeric were the same. Tumeric and curcumin are from the same source. Goldenseal does have some simular properties and they both have the yellow color. Tumeric and curcumin can be found in curry but I am not a curry fan. I would be interested to learn more on it. What book do you have?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't ever eat high fructose corn syrup in anything if I'm aware of it. I will try the turmeric because my problem isn't that I'm not allowed to eat bread and starches....on my diabetic diet I'm supposed to be able to eat 6 servings of bread and starches each day but when I eat them they run my sugar up real high and it stays up for hours so I try not to eat them. I'm taking 2000mg of metformin daily but breads and starches still give me a problem. My doctor's advice is "don't eat them if they run your sugar up".
Well by not eating them that leaves my choices to be vegetables and protein.
I don't care for most meat and I don't like peanut butter very often.
I was eating tomatoes everyday but I got some kind of allergy to them...they make my mouth itch on the inside and I get severe leg cramps after eating them.
I looked up the turmeric and it should be good for diabetes. In my book it lists turmeric as golden seal.

Maybe you could try white-out in your coffee. emoticon

My friend uses fat-free half and half. I'm not sure what's in there, but I can only imagine it's corn syrup -- not good for a diabetic, right?

I've learned to drink coffee black -- much simpler all around.

Best wishes to you!

Let's walk!

You might consider adding Turmeric as a supplement to your routine. It will lower your triglycerides and shouldn't have an adverse effect on your diabetes. I know you have to control your carbs but if you can find a few things that you like and are high enough in fiber maybe you can add a small amount now and then to make eating a little more enjoyable. Agave is a good sweetner and of course Stevia. I am not sure if using actual cream or milk isn't a better choice than some of the creamers for a diabetic even if they do add to the fat intake.

Try making a list of the things you can have even if it is a small amount. Sprouted grain breads are usually better for everyone but in limited amounts of course.

Thanks for all your concern and support, I'm feeling better....I had a large cup of coffee with 2 sweet n low and 2 tsp nondairy creamer, the creamer added 4 carbs for the day. Do any of you know of a non dairy sugar free non carb creamer?
I opted for 2 boiled eggs for breakfast. It's 3 hours until lunch and I haven't decided what to have.

It is hard enough dieting just to lose weight, but to do it due to ill health is twice as hard. Don't look at it as a penance. look at the pluses not the minuses. Yes you are on a restricted diet, but it is for all the right reasons. You are going to get well and be able to do so many things you cant do now. You will stop yourself from getting terrible illnesses that might eventually kill you. My late ex husband did not control his diabetes till it was too late. he ended up with heart and kidney failure and going blind. He died at the age of only 63. If he had stuck to the diet I put him on he would be still around now. I feel so very sad about that. If you just try to change your mindset and tune it to looking forward to all the good things that will happen for you it will get so much easier. You have lots of friends here who are rooting for you to win this battle and have a long and healthy and happy life.

High triglycerides are caused from too much sugar in the diet. This sugar can come from a number of places. Besides bread and pasta, potatoes, peas, and corn are also converted in large part to sugar. Fruits should be limited to no more that two servings per day, giving preference to low-glycemic fruits for the most part. Fruits should be eaten fresh, whole, and in the raw, but stay away from most fruit juices.Tomato juice is ok. Eat lots of greens
and veggies of all colors.

Lowering triglycerides will in turn cause ldl cholesterol to lower.

To make sure you get enough protein, consider whey and egg-white protein powder supplements. You may also find available a reduced-lactose milk that has more protein than most milks.

For the most part, leaving out sugar and starchy foods is more important that limiting fat, particularly for someone with diabetes, or a pre-diabetic condition. In fact, some recent research seems to show that fat restricted diets are really not all that healthy.

By all means, stay away from "fake" fats (trans-fatty acids), such as hydrogenated oils (margarine, "Crisco", etc).

Fish is a very good source of protein.

I'm tired of having to deny myself so many things! I feel like quiting but I can't! My life may depend on whether I lose all this extra weight or not!
I have diabetes along with all the other things that are wrong with me! I get so frustrated!!!
I'm supposed to be able to eat some bread but it runs my sugar up too high as does cereal, rice,& potatoes.
My triglycerides are too high, my "good" cholesterol is too low!I have to restrict saturated fats also.
I have started having food allergy symptoms from tomatoes, peppers and potatoes!
I don't like hamburger, pork and most meats...and I'm sick of chicken!
It's a good thing that I like fish! I don't like tuna though.
I also have to watch my sodium intake because of high blood pressure problems.
I've got to break this plateau I'm in and start losing again and Finish the job!

Hi all

Getting frustrations out in the open, makes it easier and giving us time to possibly see a new perspective once we write it out. That can be a good thing because it may not be that so much as the anger we are feeling at the moment.

It's not good holding anger as it helps to keep us sick and depressed. So by writing them we are trying to put it into a positive for us and those who read the frustrations for ourselves. Glad this is here for all of us.

Okay, here's my moment of whining. It's too hard; I'll never stick with it because I never do. I'm tired of always having to watch my every move to make sure it doesn't put another pound on my already enormous body. AGGGHGHGHGH!

(Now that's out of the way- I can get back to the real world where my whining doesn't amount to a hill of beans. :))

Frustration is never due to "worthless you" although your upbringing may have drilled that into you. I know it did me and my parents and grandparents. At 53 with my elders all passed, I no longer blame them but have learned to fight for myself when others try to play that game on me. Your weight, sex, education, color, where you grew up matters not if you are curious and willing to learn. Just don't take a single person or groups word. Get info from a wide variety of places and try to see things from several points of view. That's what gives you a well rounded personality. Education, at higher learning institutions, is not necessarily important. I think it's common knowledge that some of the dumbest people can come from those places. Not to denigrate the great people who achieve great things with their education but there are also many who achieve likewise without such educations.

Sure seems quiet on all my team post boards. Maybe I need to join more teams Or maybe I need to spend more time exercising body parts other than my eyes and fingers using the pc. I haven't been doing the treadmill or my strength routine in a few weeks. I have been at the shop 6 days a week but that isn't near enough walking and absolutely no aerobics. I know that the only thing that works for me is aerobic walking and that means treadmill.

I am going to try using fresh goats milk for a while instead of soy and see if I do better emotionally.

I am at the shop now and do have a few things I need to do so better let my fingers do something besides the keyboard.

Have a happy day.

Hi Every One, Hello Newbies, when I get frustrated I wonder if it’s me-the situation-or my own understanding of the facts. When I get that way I go fact hunting- so I can get around opinions that cloud the story. Hey Team check-out my recent blogs on body pH, food oils, Systemic Candida, and a few things that may be a cause of why weight lose is slow and energy is low. If my blogging is a sign of frustration; I can get really frustrated!
I have reduced many of my unknowns about food and nourishing self. I have identified many of the causes of pain not just mask them as my doctors are prone to do and pin pointed allergies I have that I never noticed before. I used to get mad at corporate rules and take it out on me; I am making progress with accepting the extreme corporate greed moments are not due to “a worthless me”; maybe my views right now are very Jeffersonian? I am learning to rethink food for health and healing because the propaganda of the masses practically killed me physically and emotionally. May your health do more than just survive- may you thrive?!

The greatest love story is your own.
If you miss out of life to the fullest; they win.
You are the happiness master of your own mind.
Thought is an active dynamic energy to harmonize and corrolate good.
Clear all paths to love thru forgiveness.
I may not recognize the significance until some time later.
Is my resistance to change really that strong?
Impatience does not provide the time to learn the lesson;
Awaken new ways to approach the dissolving of a problem;

Nope - not going to whine. Instead, I'm going to focus on drawing good to myself. You might say, my biggest frustration is with myself, for not having done so more often already.
