I second the suggestion to take a look at your shoes and do some strength training. I got shin splints badly when I first started running, mostly because my legs needed to gain some strength. I also used calf sleeves while I was gaining strength and it was very helpful. They basically just gave my calf muscle more support while I was running until my calves could support themselves better. Mostly importantly, keep running!

Since you mentioned you haven't run in a long time, are your shoes older? It might be time to head to your LRS and get fitted. Shoe needs change over time and running in old or shoes that are no longer right for your feet can cause all sorts of running aches and pains. Have you also jumped back into running too quickly and it might be an overtraining issue? Try backing off a little, do some stretching and basic strength moves like lunges, squats, and bridges to warm up and see if that helps.

Hi, I used to get shin splints all the time as well. I find that I have to keep myself well hydrated before my runs and my potassium levels up or I suffer. I eat 2 bananas a day. Haven't had shin splints in awhile now.
