It's natural to be nervous about missing a run, the first time through training. This is much more psychological than physiological. There are training programs that only have people work up to long runs of 9 or 10 miles before running a half. While they no doubt work physiologically, it was psychologically very important for me to have a 13 mile training run before I attempted my first half.

My second half, I was coming off an injury and had only worked up to a 10 mile long run the week before the half. I didn't run the second half as fast as the first, but I had no problem going the distance. The major difference was, at that point I *knew* I could run a half because I'd done it before.

It's easy to say, but hard to do: Relax. Get back into your training program, and don't try to make up missed runs. The training is important, but it's not a straightjacket. Sometimes you will miss runs because of illness or injury; just get back into the training after you recover. And yes, be gentle with yourself about how much you can do when just over the flu. Maybe you couldn't run over 6 miles yesterday; but your ability to run farther will come back in plenty of time for a half on 3/22.

Thanks, I have worked really, really hard to lose this weight - the healthy way. I ended up just doing the 6 miles, I don't think I could have done more if I tried. I was just a bit winded, but I keep telling myself not to worry about it until this weekends long run. The good news is, the weather is going to be perfect, so I can really enjoy some fresh air also!

Good luck to everyone on your training! emoticon

May be too late for today but don't sweat the missed run. This close to the race it won't make much difference. I would just go with your training plan and try to stay on track with it the rest of the way. You're probably not all the way recovered from the flu anyway.

You're going to do great on the 22nd!

Remember that no matter how fast you go this will be a PR for the half!

From the tracker under your signature you've done fantastic on the weight loss. You'll be able to finish this. I have no doubts.

Good luck!

Hello all, I am supposed to run my first half marathon on 3/22. I have worked hard training for it, but unfortunately, I got the flu last week and missed a 3.5 mile short run last Thurs and more devastatingly, I missed my 11 mile long run Saturday. I am back on my feet and plan to run the 6 mile run tonight that my running schedule has me set for, but should I attempt to run the 11 miles that I missed instead? I am really worrying this is going to effect my ability to complete this race in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for any advice! emoticon

I ran almost 20 years ago and I'm just getting back into it. I've lost 43 lbs since August and I'm training for my 1st half on May 16th. So far I really enjoy the workout.

Welcome to the team! Training for that first half is special. You'll build memories and learn a lot about how to train.

I ran my 3rd half last Saturday, and I suppose the start of training for the next one is a week from this coming Saturday; but I think of myself as being in a reverse taper right now.

Hi!
I have been a member of Spark People for over a decade, have lost over 40lbs and kept it off for the last 10 years. I have a love/hate relationship with running and am back in the love phase and am going to sign up for a fall half marathon. I currently run 7 miles in about 1:41 and would like to get that down to about 1:30. My goal is to do the half in sub three hours. Excited to be part of this group!
