Welcome Carol. I only joined myself a day or two ago. But I wanted to tell you that I ran my first half marathon about 6 years ago, and I thought that my friend was absolutely crazy to even approach me about it. ME? A half marathon? that's only for skinny people who have everything in their lives under control, who are confident and secure. Right? Well, my friend didn't let up and I finally agreed. It was GREAT! And I did very well. But the sense of accomplishment was something that always stays with me, I define myself differently now. I am a runner. I've since run a marathon and did well in that too. So my point is that why not you? You're no different than anyone else who lines up on that starting line. You can do it! And then you'll be able to say YOU completed a half marathon!!

Go for it!!

Trish

Hi everyone! I'm running the San Francisco Half at the end of July! I ran a 5k last year...my only race to date...and felt so accomplished. My motivation for running is to give myself something to train for, and make my body feel strong, purposeful, and accomplished! Kind of nervous, kind of can't wait to be on my way!

Hi everyone!! I am new to running and just beginning to explore options to keep me motivated. I am bouncing some ideas around in my head and a HM is one of them. So I thought I would join this team to learn about the type of training involved and see if it's for me. There are a few HM in the Fall, so I am considering that as an option. I am definitely doing a few 5ks this summer and a 10K, and a HM on 10/10/10 may just be the culmination of my spring and summer training! I'll see how things go as I increase my running distance over the next few weeks!

I'm sure I'll learn a lot from all of you and I am looking forward to exploring what it takes to me a half-marathoner!!

Hi, everyone, I'm Eddy. I'll be running my first HM in May. I've signed up for two FMs in the past, didn't run the first and changed to a HM in the second (the one that is this May). Anyway, I have a bad habit of setting the bar so high for myself that I don't work on taking the steps to get there-I just jump into it and then either hurt myself or burn out really quickly. In other words, I try to do too much, too soon. But that's the story of my life. I'm definitely an overachiever, lol. I've spent some time over on the Full Marathon Team, but realized that I'm kind of kidding myself!
Anyway, right now I'm going to be walking/running this HM in May. I'm mostly working on just becoming a consistent runner :)

Hi Everyone!

I'm fairly new to SP and am training to run my 2nd 1/2 marathon in April. The first one was last fall and I hadn't trained very well for it and was crazy sore afterwards! This one I'm determined to beat my last time and not hurt so badly! I'm not fast by any means (think snail) but I can do it and it keeps me focused on exercise. And an extra bonus, increasing my training obviously helps with my weight loss!

Being new to the 1/2 marathons, I look forward to hearing about others exeriences and tips! emoticon

HI! I'm Mary and I'm doing my first half marathon this weekend on Mercer Island, near Seattle. I've had chronic asthma for most of my life and it always kept me from running. Recently, my asthma has not been bothering me while exercising, so I've decided to become the runner I always wanted to be. Now, I'm overweight and have a torn calf muscle - but have the blessing of my ortho surgeon to go ahead and start walking and jogging. I'm signed up for a lot of other 'races' this year - but only intend to beat my own previous times. I'm looking forward to mentally preparing with all of you. This is exciting!

I am a totally mental runner! When I was training for my first (and only) marathon, I bought the book The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer by David Whitsett, Forrest Dolgener & Tanjala Mabon Kole. It focuses a lot on the mental side of running. Chapter 2 deals specifically with the negative self talk. First you add the phrase "it doesn't matter" to the end of your negative statements. For example, if you say, "It's so hot today."- you add, "but, it doesn't matter." After a while, you train yourself to make positive statements.
My training partner and I used to use a lot of positive talk. Whenever one of us was feeling tired, we would ask, "How are you doing?" We would both reply, "I feel great! I'm full of energy! I can run forever!" It was total bull at the moment, but if you repeat it enough times, you start to believe it!
Good Luck! emoticon

Hello! My name is Danielle. I'm 26. My highest weight was around 245 lbs last year. Since then I've lost 35 lbs and have now gained back around 20 of it. My ultimate goal is 130 lbs.

I've started working on my Spark Page so please stop by. I have more info about myself on there and pictures in the near future.

I am hoping to do my first half marathon in September. It's the USAF Marathon in Dayton OH. I was supposed to do it with my husband last September but we both got quit sick right around that time.

Looks like a great group!

Hello! My name is Tony and I am from MN. I will be participating in my first half marathon in June. Actually I signed up for the Team Ortho Monster Series, which includes a 7K, 2 half marathons and a duathlon. I enjoy running and am really excited and yet nervous for the races. Looking to get advice and some helpful hints by joining this group.

Hi. I'm Fran, from Tacoma WA and I'm running my first half in September. I've done a couple of 10ks and a few 5ks. I am currently working with a trainer on building strength and endurance.

I am 51, mother of three, and I'm having issues while running w/ "leaking". I will be going back to the urologist about this as it's truly interfering w/ my life at this point. Anybody else have issues around this and what did you do?

My wife and I retired about 3 years ago and as of Sept 2009 we decided to change our lifestyle and get fit. We have lost 83 pounds between us and just yesterday we completed our first walking half marathon. Our next goal is to walk a full marathon by May. Any training help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all! I'm Kristin and I'm new to the team. I started losing weight in 2008 and lost over 95 pounds and "ran" (and walked, a lot, but finished!) my first two half marathons last spring. I stuck with running through the summer and did some 5ks and 4mi races, but then with winter stopped running and started gaining a little weight back. I'm starting my running program back up this week for my HM May 9. Any tips are appreciated!

Hi, my name is Tawna and I work in personal finance. I started running about a year ago, but haven't done more than 4-5 miles at a time. My brother has completed two half marathons and is my inspiration for doing my first 1/2 on May 22nd! I'm really excited to have found this page and am anxious for any tips you all could give me!

hi everyone!
I'm Danielle and I'm new to the team. I am running my first half on May 30/10 and the training schedule that I plan to follow begins this coming Monday. I have never really run more than 6k at once so this will be a huge challenge. Can't wait to see how I do!

Happy Running! My name is Cheryl and I am returning to sparkpeople after a couple years hiatus. I seriously began running last year and ran about 8 5ks. Now I am beginning to train for my first half marathon, which is very trying here in NH during winter! I can't wait to get outside.

Hi. My name is Jamie. I am a Nurse Practitioner, and fairly new runner. I have signed up for my first half, and have been training for the past couple of months. I run 05/22, and the date is fast approaching! I've only run one 5K, and one 10K in the past, so this will be quite a difference. Looking forward to getting some tips and support from the group!

some days you have to give yourself credit just for attempting. I try and remind myself I'm out running when I could be sitting around reading or watching TV, doing something good for myself and I should give myself credit for doing it!

Hi everyone. I joined this team a while back, but didn't get around to post anything. Not sure why. I've been running for about 2 1/2 years, but it took me over a year to try my first race, a 5k, in 10/08. In 2009, I joined a beginner's running group and ran 6 5ks and 2 10ks. This year, I'm doing at least 2 half marathons, my first is 2 weeks from today, and one full marathon in October (not sure what I was thinking when I signed up for that!), along with other races. I'm also going to mentor for the beginner's running group that literally changed my life last year.

My biggest issue with training/racing is the mental side of things. I have such terrible negative self-talk and really struggle with believing in myself. I'm going to a seminar on Sports Psychology for runners and triathletes this week at the running store I go to. I figure it can't hurt and I can use all the help I can get! =0)

Sorry for the rambling introduction. It's been fun reading about everyone's plans and successes. Look forward to following everyone's progress.

Hello! Another newbie here.

I'm Lily; training for a half in September 2010 (the Rock n Roll marathon & half marathon in Va Beach, VA). Gotta work up from walk/jog to run first though.

I'm still figuring out SP, the groups and the forums, even though I joined a while back. Just wanted to say hi!

It sounds like you have the right idea so far, the one thing I can think of that will be helpful is to pick one day of the week for your long run day, make it a day when you can free up 2 to 3 hours every week. Then, each week, make that run a mile longer than the previous week until you reach 1/2 marathon distance. Even have a run about 2 to 3 weeks before your chosen event that is about 14 miles long. One other suggestion, HAVE FUN with your runs. Change up your routes when you can, even include some hill work if you feel up to it, but be careful about pushing yourself too hard. Also, don't try anything new too close to your event, you don't want to injure yourself and have to miss out on something you have trained really hard for!

help--i'm new and i need to know how real people train for a half-marathon. I've been running for about 15 months now. I started with a mile and a half and worked up to 7 1/2 miles. Then I didn't run because it was cold and then I injured my right hamstring, so I've been out of action almost 2 months. I'm back to 4 miles and it's my goal to be able to run a 1/2 marathon. Any suggestions on how I can do it? I try to run about 25 miles a week, but that's 4 or 5 miles 5 times a week.
thanks!

HI! I discovered the joy of running last January, and ran in the Terry Fox Run last September, and completed a 10K event in October. I had been training for a 30K race on March 28, but didn't register in time. So, I signed up for a half marathon on April 11 instead! I am totally excited about it, and really enjoying my training runs. My longest run is coming up on Sunday for 11 miles.

I just found this team. I started running back in July 2009 as a challenge from my 11 yr old son. I was an avid walker and when I started running I could barely complete 1/4 mile without stopping. In Sept 2009, my niece ran a 1/2 marathon in Philly and challenged me to join her next year. I foolishly said yes and have been training since. I am now up to 6 1/4 miles. I have a 5k scheduled for early April and an 8k scheduled for the end of April. I am looking for a couple of 10k's to do this summer. I am enjoying the challenge of pushing my body...running a little bit faster, a little bit longer, etc. If someone had said to me 1 year ago, "Cindy, you will be training to run a 1/2 marathon in Sep 2010", I would have laughed them out of the room. What a difference a year makes!

“Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use.”

Hi! I'm Caitlin, and I'm relatively new to running. For about the last 4 years, I've told myself that I was going to run a half-marathon. I don't know why...I wasn't a runner then, and I certainly had never set such a lofty goal before. Well, 4 years later, I'm starting to build up my mileage and train for a half-marathon in August. I can't even back out, because I've already registered and paid for it!!! emoticon As much as I'm nervous about this endeavor, I'm excited because I know I can do it if I put the time and training into it!

Hi! I've been running since May of last year and finished 3 5K races and have a serious running bug! I also cross train.
Now with winter I'm using the treadmill but hope to be back outside once winter's icy roads improve here.
I'm looking to follow Hal Higdon's plan, which is more 'realistic' than some of the other half-marathon plans out there! I haven't signed up for a 13.1 miler but will soon! :)

It's easy to say you're too tired, too stressed, too busy, too this or too that. Too bad. The only way you'll strip away the fat is to start by stripping away the excuses.

Hello! My name is Lauren and I live in the snowy city of Pittsburgh. I am fairly new to running, having only started a little less than 2 years ago.
I have always been very athletic playing sports my whole lift, but really HATED running. I started slow one day and before I knew it i was running half marathons.

The first one I ran was last year in Pittsburgh and finished in 2:20. My goal was just to finish so I was happy with that time. the next HM I ran was in Erie, PA and unfortunately I came down with a bad cold (later to be diagnosed bronchitis!), but I ran the race and finished it in about the same time.

I have signed up for the Pittsburgh marathon again and my goal is to finish in 2 hours. The only bad part is that training has become extremely difficult with the weather we've been having. I'm confident thath I can do it though and have been consistently working out at the gym. I just need to get those first few road runs under my belt to get the leg soreness out of the way!!!

Hi I'm Miriam, I used to be a division 1 rower in college but just started running again in October (after having put on way too much weight). I live in NH with my husband, 2 cats and a standard poodle and work as an engineer while doing my Masters in Plastics Engineering part time.

Hello! I am totally new to running. I have been working out regularly for several months, but felt like I needed a challenge. I signed myself and my husband up for a half marathon in the middle of May. My goal is just to finish. We started training yesterday and walked/jogged 4 miles. My eating habits are not the best, and I am just learning to make healthy choices. Training for this marathon is a big motivator for me to watch what I eat (and watch my waistline).

Hi to all you brave marathoners!

I was a little confused about the reason for the team. I actually already WALKED a half marathon (at 230 pounds no less!) My next goal is to run one but I am thinking I need to lose some weight before I start training!

Good luck to everyone!

HI, My name is Dottie and I am planning to do my first mini marathon in May. I started running about 2 years ago and have done several 5Ks but thats about it. Since I am 46 years old and carrying extra weight it has been a challenge to find a training program that works for me so I don't hurt myself. :)

Hello Everyone...I'm new here but not to running, I started running with my father when I was 15! However, since I've had my two kids, I've had an on and off relationship with it! I'm back and I'm starting to train for for the SLC half marathon, I'm super excited and I've realized how much I need running in my life!

I might be insane, but I just started running in the last couple months, and I decided to sign up for the Madison half marathon on Memorial day. I know I can walk 13.1 miles, and Madison has a walking option, but I want to try to run it.

I've been morbidly obese all my adult life, a lover of cheese, beer, and the internet. I am learning moderation, in an effort to shrink my waistline. My short term goal weight is still obese by the BMI scale, but I want to get there and see how I feel. I already don't recognize myself when I see myself in mirrors or catch a glimpse of myself in a window.

(Edit to add, SparkPeople only counts my weightloss from when I joined. I've actually lost around 70lbs.)

I'm getting ready for my first half-marathon on May 30th. I just finished a 2-day Cross-Country Ski Marathon (155 KM) last weekend and found that training for it was a fantastic way to stay motivated and keep on track with my workouts and nutrition. So, even though I'm not a natural runner (have done a few 5 and 10Ks, but very slowly) I'm hoping that training for the half will help me to stay on track. Good luck fellow half-marathon hopefuls!

Hi! I joined SP a few weeks ago and like many, want to get fit and lose weight. Last summer I ran 3 10k's and the summer before a few 5k's, so I'm ready to step it up a bit. I'm training for my first half marathon on April 17th. I'm not a 'natural runner' but it helps me stay on track with my workouts!

Hello fellow runners! I am a member of another half marathon team on Spark and noticed this one as well. I'm about to start training for my first HM in September 2010 (VA Beach Rock 'n' Roll). I completed the C25K program last year and ran a few 5Ks but I'm not sure about a running program for the HM yet. Doing some research and hope to get started soon.

Hi,

I am currently training for my 3rd half marathon, the Shamrock, VA Beach. Running is my primary exercise because it is something I greatly enjoy. The only issue is that it is hard for me to find a running group since I run a 11 minute mile, and the groups in my area run a 10 minute mile or less. I don't mind running by myself during the week, but it would be nice to have someone to share my long run with. Does anyone else have this problem?

Hi Team!

I just walked my first half marathon on June 26th in Seattle at about 230 pounds for Team in Training (I raised about 4000 dollars for leukemia research!)

My goal is to lose about eighty pounds and then run the next one! Maybe next year. Wish me luck!

Hi everyone!

I just registered for my first half marathon on 5/30/10! I'm going to use Hal Higdon's 12 week program to train.

Nervous, but excited and determined!

Hi all! I'm terrified but excited to start training for my first HM in June (San Diego Rock & Roll). I'm currently a walker and can do about 5 miles. While I live at the beach, I think I have to do the majority of my training on the treadmill because it's easier for me to be disciplined about my distance. When I walk outside I'm too distracted and stop too often.

Does anyone else train much on the treadmill? I printed a training program from fitnessrxmag.com that seems pretty reasonable.

Several of my friends did their first HM recently (Surf City in Huntington Beach) and had an amazing race. It was really inspiring watching them. Now I want to get out there too. We'll see how it goes...

Good luck to everyone!

Hi everyone! I've been training since Dec. for my first half, which is in mid-May. I'm feeling good about my progress, but I need some motivation to tackle the hills (it's a hilly course) and to brave the cold. I also do more running/walking than I'd like to on race day. Would love any pointers! Thanks, Laura

My HM is not until March 2011, the Shamrock Half Marathon. I have more than a year to prepare and hopefully I'll be able to get one of the 8,000 spots this time around. I have been practicing with doing a 5K every time I run. I am still real tight from a previous injury. I need to take it slow so I don't get hurt again. Once all the ice and snow melts I will begin to run outside.
