Hi Heidi,
I will try to post tips on high blood pressure in the next few days. See the nutrition tips in the
FAQ / Resources Forum. It may help you lower your A1C and blood sugar numbers.

Heidi Here. I just got some blood test results back that were scary. A1c was 7 and Fasting Glucose was 140. I see the Dr. tomorrow, but have started a diet as of Friday. I renewed my training contract and will also begin exercising today. Need help navigating this new issue. I already deal with high blood pressure.

Yes, once insulin resistant always insulin resistant. Once you have pre-diabetes or full blown diabetes it never goes away no matter how well you manage it. That's the key..."managing" it and it must become a permanent, healthy lifestyle.

emoticon I was on this team 2 yrs ago. At that time DH blood glucose # had gone from preD to full blown D. BUT he was able to actually reduce all the numbers. We were thrilled & DR was happily surprised when reading 'n comparing his bloodwork results. It took a lil over a yr to reverse the high numbers. We knew he was also very lucky & that that doesn't always happen.

His regimen was that he quit drinking pop completely. He now drinks unsweetened ice tea (made from a green tea bag at the bottom of a 24 oz ice water; keeps adding water to it all day.) He attended regular aerobix classes.

Fast forward to now. This years bloodwork shows him to be preD. Here we are again. I am his wife, not his mother. I am supportive, but, I will not tell him what to do. He's back to aerobix, again. We're making healthier food choices. I see that we need to do this ALL the time, even when the bloodwork is good.

Hi, my name is Barbara, and I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes February of this year. I am 68 and usually the healthiest person in my family, but not anymore. I have been overweight for years and it has now caught up with me. I started out good, losing 8.8 lbs., but now I've started eating bread and sweets again. I hope to get encouragement and tips from this group to keep me on track with a plan. I also have depression, pre-hypertension, and high cholesterol.

Hello All, I am Marilyn, 73 and have been overweight for many years. I was told I was prediabetic a while ago, but forgot about it due to concentrating on other health issues. My A1C went from 5.7-6.0-6.2, but back to 5.7 just this week. It came down, but I need to get serious. I was always a very healthy eater, but slipped for the past year. I'm ready to get back on track and will appreciate help and suggestions.

Be STRONG and of GOOD Courage. I did not get any help from my Dr. "Just told to lose the carbs and the weight or you will need meds" - so came home and studied - settled into low carb, moderate protein and good fats. NOT Keto but do use quite a few of their recipes.

Are you checking early morning fasting blood sugars? Doing other meals and times so you know you what specific foods spike your sugar.

Hello all,

My name is Tabatha. I am a mom of 2 older children ages 19 and 14. I have been overweight since having my kids. I just found out about a month ago that I am pre-diabetic. I am doing my best to get this weight off and to eat healthier so that I don't become diabetic and am hoping to reverse the pre-diabetic diagnosis. I am using Herbalife shakes as meal replacement to help me lose weight as well as trying to make healthy choices for the meals I am not replacing with shakes.

Hi, my name is Eileen. My screen name Perdonato means forgiven in Italian.
I found out yesterday I am officially pre-diabetic and need to change that!!! I'm not really bad, but anything over normal is not good either. Pre-diabetes levels on blood tests are 5.7- 6.4. I am at 5.8. My prior blood test was in December so my numbers came up kind of fast. I also have elevated triglycerides which I guess goes hand in hand with elevated blood sugar.
Well, war has been declared and I here to fight. Thought it would be nice to have others to go through the battle with. I've already looked up the diet suggested for people with pre-diabetes and have done some research so I know what I need to do. Have started that already. Time to get serious here and post my weight and try my best to get it down! I also have thyroid issues so it's been a battle with trying to budge an ounce, but hopefully with this new eating plan it will happen. Wishing everyone the best. Will see you on the threads!

Hello everyone...glad to be here. My name is Robin. I have been prediabetic for a long time and my doctor is motivating me to make changes so this doesn't go any further. I am also hypothyroid, which makes things a little more challenging as well.

There is a wealth of information here but it is a little overwhelming. I am taking things one step at a time. First thing is to cut out the sodas, which is probably about 75% of my problem. :-)

Hi everyone, I'm so excited to find this team! I just found out that my blood sugar is in the pre diabetic range for the first time ever. (103) I know that is not terribly high but with my family history and weight I have always felt it was a matter of time before diabetes caught up with me. This was after a month of dieting and consistent exercise so I don't know what it was before. It scared me plenty. Was looking for info on how many carbs per meal I need and there is so much garbage on the net. I knew I couldn't go wrong with Spark People! and yes, you had the info right here on this thread.

I am 58 years old and have had 7 orthopedic surgeries so far. I am sick of carrying extra weight and hurting so am willing to do the work necessary to get my health back. I swim 3 x a week and have been walking daily as I'm able. Soon will have to move indoors to the treadmill. Looking forward to getting to know you all and read up on lots of good info. Making my shopping list today, including veggies and berries!

Where do I start? I am 64 years old and physically active but it seems my way of eating needed to be improved so I did just that.

I've had two tests (March, August) for A1c and Blood Glucose readings. My readings decreased in that timeframe. I'm in the Pre-diabetic range but to me that still means being diabetic.

I use a BG monitor daily to track/record.

I am not on any meds and doctor agreed that we would retest next March 2019. I'm hoping that a change in the way I eat will have another positive effect on the next tests.

I joined this group because of the title of the team and seeking info from others that are new to this diagnosis.

Following up on the question "Are SparkPeople's pre-diabetic carb levels too high?" I met with a nutritionist this week at Duke Health. She said that the recommended carb intake levels are: (for women) 30-45 g per meal and 15-30 g per snack; (for men) 45-60 per meal and 15-30 per snack. 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. The carb intake depends on your level of physical activity. She also recommended never going more than 48 hours without physical activity (30-45 minutes per day, 3-5 times per week). Blood sugar starts to increase if you go more than 48 hours!!! Enough chatting! Time to go exercise!!

Please know that berries, all types of berries are low-glycemic and very easy on blood sugar, meaning you will not spike. All berries provide numerous health benefits, and thanks to their lower carb content and low glycemic index, they make a perfect addition to any diabetes eating plan. Make sure you wash you hands before using your blood sugar monitor as residue could change numbers..

Hi Susan - I too am in Pre-Diabetic levels ...Dx last Oct.
I started with just recording what I was eating and learning about carbs... then gradually started cutting out some things with big amounts of carb trying to get carbs 10 less than the week before and have gradually gotten them down to pretty consistent 40 grams per day but that eliminated all fruit and I miss it. I got a blood glucose monitor abour two months ago so I can see what the numbers are and learn what foods affect it for me - wach is individual but go one day at a time and learn and ask questions - will try to encourage and come along beside you.... You Are NOT alone!!!

Hello team. My name is Susan. Recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Got the report over the phone and not from the doctor. Uncertain what that means or where to start to improve that diagnosis. Have joined this team to educate myself. Hope this helps.

Not new to Spark but definitely new to having issues with sugar. Was hit by a car nine months ago. My very active life switched to one of immobility. Gained thirty pounds and unhealthy blood levels. Now back to pushing myself to try and regain as much of my previous life as possible.

Hello. I'm Carrie. I live up in Alaska.

I started seeing pre-diabetic A1C numbers in 2006. They've gone lower, they've gone higher. They're still pre-diabetic. I've had two elementary school kids in the years since then, and haven't made myself the priority. This year, I have a freshman and senior in high school *and* am being nudged to take more action towards better health/lower numbers. Part of that includes being more active here at SP. I've been here many years. There's been progress. Now it's time for some more. :) I'm working with a nutritionist, have been part of the YMCA Prediabetes education class, and am reading the cookbooks I've put on my shelf over the years. Stepping back towards healthiness is a journey, though. One step at a time.

Thanks for reading.

Carrie

Hi! I've been a Sparker since 2007. I'm here because I was recently diagnosed with P-D, even though I eat right (Dr. Hyman) and work out hard and regularly. My husband is Type 1, so I've always cooked and eaten low-carb. We're stumped, but realize that the important thing is to try to eat even better and work out even harder! (At 59, everything starts to wear out!) Am especially curious about the SP pre-diabetes recommendation for daily carb intake, as I never reach the minimum number and feel like I'm doing something wrong when I eat more carbs. I have an appointment coming up with a nutritionist, so I'll let you know! emoticon

Hi, feel free to see my story on My SPARK page
Short story : 69yr, strong faith, several medical issues, married 40 years, Dx with prediabetes October 2017 and told to CUT the carbs from diet and get blood sugar lower or go on meds but no real guidance or limits or goals.

started with just recording carbs I was eating and averaged about 125 to 150 so I started cutting them down and reading labels and reading articles.... In Jan told that insurance would not help with testing stuff but decided to buy my own and started checking fasting blood sugars.

Feeling like I am kind of floundering - have been helped a lot by one person on other Spark Team - and thought maybe sharing with others here would encourage and help me get on top of my discouragement - so here I am - only get much writing done on Sparks about three days a week but do try to check in on my teams and stay committed to better health.

There are many doctors that are not qualified to deal with pre-diabetes and those that do not give you all the information you need to take your health into your own hands. Those that don't take an A1C test, thyroid, vitamin D test and a lipid panel.

Early Intervention is the best way not to become a full blown diabetic. I applaud you for doing research. When I was first diagnosed I learned about 1 food a day. Hopefully, my tips on the team wall will help you. If you have questions post them on the wall, you don't have to feel alone, we are here to help. Walking is the best exercise and remember fiber and water should be your best friends.

Hi. I'm new to the team, though I've been a member of Spark for about 9 years. I've been noticing on my lab test results that the value for glucose has been moving up slowly. But my doctors have never said anything to me about it. I started with a new doctor recently as my previous one left the practice. She looked at my latest lab test findings and I overheard her say "Oh, pre-diabetic". But she never discussed it with me. I should have asked questions but, seriously, I was in shock. I've been doing some research on my own and getting the usual refrain of lose weight, exercise, eat healthy, reduce stress, etc.

I'm 70, retired and live in Maryland, close to DC. I never had any children but have 2 cats and a horse. I'm hoping to learn what to do about my pre-diabetes on this team and not feel so alone in this.

New to the team here. Just got diagnosed with pre-diabetes yesterday. Can't get in to see the doc 'til next week. Wondering what I need to know/do. I've been on Spark for years, so I'm familiar with Spark things, just not with being pre-diabetic. Does this mean I'm destined to get full-on diabetes?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome!
I just had blood tests done--my A1c isn't out of the pre-diabetes range, but I'm off my meds and working on diet....

Hi, I'm new to this team. I was diagnosed with Pre-Diabetes this year and I'm working with a medical weight loss team to lose weight and bring my fasting blood sugars below 100.

I'm new to this team. I have a physical on August 15 when I will get blood test results. I am not expecting good news. My number isn't that bad, but my doctor has not ordered the AC1 test. I have a lot of learning to do!

Hi, I'm new to this forum. Over last couple of years took weight off, then put it back on. Back then lab results showed sugar at 120 and A1C 5.4. Last lab had sugar at 124 and A1C at 6.6. Dr. wants to review results and discuss options. Appt. next week.

My name is Margaret and I live in New Hampshire.

Hello,
I am new to the Pre-Diabetic Sparkers forum. I have been really struggling to lose weight and keep it off. I am taking my Pre-Diabetes seriously. My last checkup showed my A1C is 6.4. I have a strong family history of diabetes. I really want to avoid full blown diabetes and having to take medication. In spite of the challenges that come on my weight loss and fitness journey I am determined to reach my goals. I will lose weight and get my A1C number down!

Hi Everyone, my name is Wanda and I am NOT pre diabetic.....unfortunately my sweet hubs is! I am trying to learn all I can since I am the one who cooks and shops for groceries. He is trying to learn about it too so that he can make good choices when he is out but I am going on the diet with him. I've been a sparker for about 10 years so I am into eating healthy and exercising but he loves his snacks and really leans towards a high carb diet. He has other health issues which affect his ability to digest food, primarily a history of esophageal cancer that left him with a very short esophagus and only 1/2 a stomach. That affects everything about his digestion and carbs digest easiest for him.

He was diagnosed based on an hba1c of 6.2. We are going to turn this around!

It is always good to be proactive, prepared, and educated! Personally I've been struggling with keeping the diet my doc prescribed when my fiance won't follow it...and my work schedule doesn't always cooperate. Sounds like excuses though, doesn't it!?! Lol

Hi, I'm Arundy. I am not pre-diabetic as far as I know but both my parents and my brother have diabetes. I figured I'd better get more educated.

Hi, I'm Sharon,

I recently turned 60. I am overweight, pre-diabetic and have high blood pressure. These are both things that diet and exercise can help. I'm not getting any younger. My 2 grandchildren 2 and 3.5 are hard to keep up with when we're together, Hoping to improve that too.

I have been teaching 4th grade for 23 years. I'm not ready to retire yet. I like Science Fiction and light mysteries. I love doing crafts, My current favorite is making cards,

Thank you in advance for the support I now Sparkers give to others.

Hi there. Not me, but my DH has received this diagnosis & it is a wake up call. We've been in a slump & this seems to be just the motivation needed! emoticon For myself, I had gestational diabetes; kept it under control with diet; 2nd pregnancy, never received the diagnosis...as I had all the info needed for keeping it under control...so I felt as tho I'd outsmarted it. LOL. Fast forward to now. I have a sweet tooth (has always been my downfall); I know that I need any of the diet changes that DH is now needing to make.
