to keep blood sugars in check, try not to ever exceed ~30 g of carbs at one time (no more than 2 bread or starch servings)and pair that up with some lean protein- one serving or 1 oz will do.

Thanks for the support Asantum and Jewel. Yeah, i think it will take me awhile to figure out all the ins and outs of the site AND the diet changes I need to make.
My husband, friends and family are really fit active, naturally thin people (national level sports, marathon runners). They don't see what the big deal is. They see I run, I don't eat junk. I think they think this is a "phase, " that I can eat halloween candy if I want etc. Yet, I'm terrified of this progressing and skirting the boundaries of real health problems. I'm shocked this has happened all of a sudden-without any noticable side effects.
Any good eating tips for blood sugars?

Citygrl, I think this will be good for me as well, because I thought.. hey I am turning 40... lets get a "real" physical.. boy, everything is wrong with me. I have type II and its because of insulin resistance and even with the medication its still pretty high so I am giving sparkpeople a try because I think it will be really good to talk to folks. I am not a big blogger, but it is nice to have support when sometimes no one really understand except those in your same situation. No one in my family has the resitance problems, so I am really on my own. But of course my family genes are full of high bp and stokes and heart disease and I know it can be overwhelming. You will find that this is a great site. I have been on it about a week and haven't explored everything yet, but Jewls is right... it has amazing tools and information. Welcome and we are here for ya!!

hey citygrl! I hear ya. I've been pre-diabetic for many years, keeping the disease at bay with diet and some exercise. But, progressively, I got fatter and things took a turn for the worst. Last summer, my MD wanted to put me on blood pressure meds and Glucophage. I said no, I'll drop the weight (weighed 205). Since then, I've joined Jenny Craig and lost 18, with 30 to go. My blood pressure is normal, sugars in control and I feel so much better. I needed to learn what a portion is, so I'm paying Jenny Craig for portion control. I add my own foods now, and I'm still losing. I love Sparkpeople for the amazing tools and information. Welcome, and good luck on your journey!

Well, here I go and take the plunge-this is the first community I have joined... ever. Ughgguhg. Just diagnosed with insulin resistence, high blood pressure, high chloresterol, possibly breast cancer....and I live a fairly healthy life. I'm active. I'm youngish-37. I eat ok. My body seems to be severely rejecting the 20 pounds I have put on in the last 10 years. Fair enough I guess. NO family hx of diabetes but hx of high blood pressure and chlosterol and bc. Frustrating. I hate having to watch EVERYTHING I eat. My family is thin. I have always been the stocky athletic girl who didn't care to be thin (much to the shock of my family). I also try not to whine....but these sudden health problems have set me back. No sodium, low fat, low protein, no sugar...and the weight has to go. Ughgughu. So hi everyone. I know I'll shift my attitude and get back into being a new uber healthy girl..the transition sucks!}
