Hi Karri!

You have the right mindset- Get better then worry about weight! It's hard to do both at the same time. I just was in the mental hospital and gained almost 10 pounds in 3 weeks! (That was one week in the hospital and 2 weeks outpatient). I'm feeling a lot better now, back on my diet and losing again. I also have PTSD. Feel free to send me a Spark Mail and/or post in the Awesome August Chat to get to know us more! I would love to hear your story! Take your time if depression doesn't let you... I more than know that feeling!

I started to make an introduction yesterday, but depression got the better of me. I'll keep it simple and short so maybe I can get through making an intro post today.

I'm karri, I have bipolar but also PTSD, Anxiety and Panic attacks. I'm going through a rough time right now and was looking for a team of people that would understand. I have gained weight instead of losing it and am so discouraged, but have been gently reminded by Spark friends to get concentrate on getting better and then lose the weight.

Hi Barbara! Welcome to the team! I'm Diane and I have had bipolar since I was a child. I have always had mood swings and the doctor told me that I had bipolar when I was 7. This was in the early 90's and they didn't put children on medications yet.

I am borderline pre-diabetic (my last A1C was 5.6) so I have tried to be careful with sugar (well, not today... I had some donuts). Diabetes runs in my family, so I have tried to be careful. You are amazing for losing 90 pounds! I'm sorry that you gained it back.. I have battled with that for most of my life. I got up to 280 something, down to the 230's, up to 265, down to 211, now up to 235. I'm on a SparkTeam for losing weight- the Spring 5% Challenge. I'm the leader of the Cloverleafs, and I have been losing weight, albeit slowly, since I joined. There are other weigh loss challenges here that help people as well. If things like that help you, then maybe you should try one.

I would turn to food when I was depressed and bored. I would wander into the kitchen all the time and eat. I now don't eat when I'm depressed, but I eat when I'm manic. I've been more and more hypomanic lately, and have been eating a lot. It's hard to stop. I don't have any solutions for you, I just want to let you know you are not alone. What medications are you on, may I ask? Most of the medications for bipolar make you gain weight, so that might play a role in your struggle to lose weight. I managed to lose weight on Lithium and other meds, so it is possible!

Hi everyone I'm Barbara and I was be diagnosed Bi-polar 23 years ago, back then it was before they had the different levels of bi-polar disorder. Recently I was reevaluated and diagnosed with bi-polar depression with ADHA. I work as a 911 dispatcher for my local sheriffs department and find that with the ADHA it kinda works because I don't have to focus on one task at a time, however at home it is a little harder. I currently have 4 projects that I am working on at home and can't focus on anyone of them to complete them. Might be time to get a medication check. Anyway, on top of my bi-polar disorder I have been dealing with weight problems all my life. I have found when I am in a state of depression I tend to bury my feelings with food in turn this makes me more depressed and then we have a viscous cycle. I have been on SparkPeople for a few years off and on, at one time when I was first diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes I lost 90 pounds and had my diabetes under control. The doctor said 3 words that threw all my efforts out the window..."you beat diabetes"...Yeah I learned the hard way you never beat it you have it under control and don't need medications...So I am back again with a weight loss goal of 100 pounds. I am hoping with support from the different groups that my goal is met with support and encouragement. Please feel free to go to my spark page and friend me.

It's always darkest before the dawn...it will get better!

Welcome! I have had a struggle losing weight on meds and just maintained for this past year. I am going to walk more and lose weight that way since I haven't been doing that. Losing weight on meds is possible... I used to be 280 and I got down all the way to 211 before I messed up. I started going out to eat at fast food places on almost a daily basis and ballooned back to 235 pounds (which is where I have been for the last year). This was with strict diet and exercise. It's hard, but don't give up. We are here to support you. *hugs* I'm Diane, or you can call me Rissa, it's your choice. I hope you like it here and find the support you need.

Hi, my name is Amanda. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when I was around 20 years old. More than likely was bipolar much younger but first time I wanted to admit to it. I did not take my medications till about four years ago. So I have only been learning about the disorder and medications for about that long. Came to learn it is hard to lose weight till my new medications. So now I am looking to learn and lose all at the same time.

Hi,

That sounds very complicated and very time consuming before they allow you to have the surgery. At least you will know when you go in there that you will be in good shape and should have no problems. There are a lot of people here who have gone through the same surgery. I thought that I would look and see if there is a team for those who are having your type of surgery and I found one called Bariatric Journey - New Beginnings. Here is the link to that team :

It is current, so you can find some buddies and some other people to talk to about their journey. I hope that it will prove useful to you. I think that I would go with the less risky surgery too. It is hard enough to have surgery in the first place, without having extra worries. There are certainly a lot of medical disciplines involved. I wish you the best of luck and keep in touch with us, so that we can help encourage you along the way!! Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon emoticon

Hi Deb. They have a bunch of hoops for me to jump through: track my food for a month before meeting monthly for 6 months with a nutritionist, meet with an exercise physiologist, get cleared by a gastroenterologist, psychologist and cardiologist, and get written approval from my therapist, neurologist, and oncologist. But the pre-eval went well and she thought the best option with my medical history was the sleeve, which is what I was leaning towards to begin with. It doesn't offer as large a weight loss potential as the other surgery they can do, gastric bypass, but is less risky. I am trying to be active here on SparkPeople and to diligently track my food to show them I am capable of taking care of myself.

Hi and emoticon to the Living with Bipolar Disorder team!! First of all, emoticon best wishes for the best day ever. I hope that you are doing something fun for your birthday. emoticon emoticon !! We are really excited that you have decided to join us. I have been away from Spark for 6 months or so myself. I had computer problems and I was out of touch for quite awhile. This is a really great group. I hope that you will become comfortable here. What type of bariatric surgery are you going to have? I've had friends here on Spark who' have had different types of surgery - some had sleeves and the others had a gastric bands. I don't know much about the procedures. I wish you luck with your goal and I hope that they don't hold your Bipolar Disorder against you and you are cleared for surgery. How frustrating that must be. Wow, you are a busy woman working and going to school full time. Make sure that you save some "me" time for you. Exercise is great for cutting stress,so is yoga and meditation. emoticon I hope to see you in the forums and on the threads. It is really nice that you have joined us.!!Take care and God bless, Deb emoticon

Hi everyone. I'm goodfeline, and I am new to the group but not to SparkPeople. I'm a boomerang - I swing in and out every so often as I keep falling on and off the wagon. I've been mostly on for this year, though I disappeared from the site for about 6 months. I am trying to lose about 200lbs and am considering weight loss surgery (which apparently gets more complicated if you have a mental illness). I am 29 (30 tomorrow), married with 4 cats, and I work full-time/go to school full-time.
