I'm CS too, most, if not all, my allergies are based off of that. My sister has it too, and wonder of wonders, she's allergic to lecithin, which is in eggs and soy.
I had a very health conscious friend ask me a while ago about what I thought about the soy rage that was going on at the time (you know, soy is the new miracle food crap). I told her straight up, I'm allergic to it, so I'm not buying that it is a miracle food and the fact is, most foods, if eaten in moderation and in a rather more natural form, are miracle foods!

It is getting so much worse, everywhere. I didn't start having reactions until 1996, which coincidentally, is the year they started adding Genetically Modified soy to products. Hmmmm...really makes you wonder what is in that stuff.
Luckily, I live in Maine, which is fairly close to the Canadian border. From the research I have done, the further away from the southern US in location, the easier it is to find foods without additives and soy. Mostly for the fact that the soy crops are in the south and we don't have them up here. Interesting stuff!

I am chemical sensitive(CS). Most people have not even heard of it! I will never get tired of educating people about it because ANYONE can become CS. Most people don't believe it would ever happen to them though, much like allergies. For those who obviously don't want to learn about it, I don't waste my time, but if someone is asking questions I will certainly answer them. People don't realize how badly allergies can truly be. All they see on tv is about the sniffles and sneezing and that peanuts are the only danger. Allergies, asthma and CS are affecting more and more people each year and people can die from these things. Why are they getting worse? Because of all the chemicals and other stuff like soy, corn, wheat being added to our food supply.

Okay, off my soapbox. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Well, I have lived with allergies in my family for 20 years and I do get tired of educating people. Particularly since I've come up against a fair few who just think it is "all in your head". I definitely prefer to keep quiet about my allergies and just make wise choices as much as possible. I save up a lot so that when I do go out I can have something that I wouldn't normally at home (like milk products).

Very true Treppils, very true. I personally don't mind questions or answering them; however, sometimes people just take it too far.

Plus, I don't want to be the "special" friend when it comes to food. I have friend who has allergies to foods and she uses it like a crutch and then it takes on a life of its own when going out into the world. I traveled with her to NYC for a week . . . it was nightmare when it came to eating.

If people ask questions, you should see it as an opportunity to educate them. Then they will no longer be "uninformed".

Wow. People are really, um, "uninformed" aren't they? Now I remember why I don't say much about my allergies. It's been so long I forget these things!

I do the same thing when out. Raw or steamed veggies, no oils, butter, etc. Salads, fruit, baked potato, poached eggs, etc.
I HATE it when people say, well what do you eat, where to you go? Or when they say, that must really be awful. Well, yes it is awful, but like anything else in life, I have adapted and overcome.
I had my appendix out a couple of months ago and someone asked me if I was still allergic to soy, DUH! That doesn't make an allergy go away...
Sorry, I just needed to vent. One of those days.

Wow. You guys make me feel like I don't have anything to complain about. Granted, it is harder for me to discover my triggers because I often don't have immediate reactions.
Most people do think I am a health nut because of the food choices I make, but that is better than making everyone feel uncomfortable because I can't join in.

Dee,

I usually get the pity eyes and then loads of questions about "can you eat at this place" or "what do you eat?!"
I don't want to be the person everyone takes pity on or the one everyone looks at when deciding where to go. Sure check in with me, just like you would the rest of the group but I want no pity.
I certainly don't starve and can always find something to eat. People who don't know just think I eat ultra healthy when eating out. I like it that way.
I would be very upset if they said it was in my head - do you get that? How rude!

My list seems easy to manage compared to what I have read today. It's not been too bad since I found out. I try not to talk to other people who do not have allergies due to their reactions, which is usually over the top and full of pity.

I can't have soy either . . . it is truly amazing what foods they add soy too. I get frustrated, sometimes, but love the challenge.

I find lots of people are shocked when they hear soy on my list of NO NO foods (the foods I have an intolerance too). Anyone else have that happen?

Wow, that sounds familiar. I too have eczema on hands and feet that is now mostly disappeared after eliminating soy from my diet.
Cain brand foods are good, shortening (palm oil), mayonnaise (safflower). Tonno brand tuna packed in water only, no veg broth (which is soy). Better than Bouillon, Chicken Flavor. There are some great "raw" bars out there, thinkfruit and prana are both made with fruit and nuts, not cooked, no grains (check just to be sure) and they are quite filling and taste great. When I go out I usually eat salad with no dressing. Prime rib is an option (not exactly the healthiest) but it is roasted and never touches a frying pan or grill. Baked potato is a great option and even Wendy's has them. If you are ambitious you could buy a dehydrator and make your own "chips" with zuchinni, summer squash and other veggies and fruit. They are actually pretty good. Dates are a great option, if you like them. I always have a bag of air popped popcorn or baby carrots with me, and also one of those bars I listed above. Poached eggs and fruit if you go out for breakfast. Once you know what to look for, it gets soooo much easier. Soy also has many aliases: MSG, modified food starch, mono and diglycerides and more. There is a website that lists them all, if I find the link, I will send it to you. McDonald's fruit and walnut salad-no walnuts they have soy-but the other items are ok if you want something quick and also Wendy's baked potato. I think that is all I can think of for tonight. I will post more food as I think of them. Good luck to you! And it does get better.

I have a soy allergy too. Had it my entire life as well but was only diagnosed a few years ago after symptoms blew up after the birth of my first child. For years and years I was told I had contact dermatitis. It was all over my hands and my feet. I noticed that when I went on a low carb diet it got better but there was still something missing. I argued with doctors about suspecting food allergies and one even told me "it was the way God made me and to get used to it". FINALLY, probably sick of my complaints, an allergist tested me for 64 food items. The result....severe allegy to grains and soy. There is soy in almost everything unless you buy fresh. Got any tips for eating out or eating on the run?

Welcome, Gina! Sounds like you have some experience to share with the rest of us. Looking forward to hearing more from you.
I'm allergic to soy as well, but only mildly, my sister has a much more severe reaction, but quite different from yours. Amazing how allergies in different people can be so different!

Hello to everyone. Nice to join a group where everyone will know what I am talking about.
I am 29 and have had lifelong issues with food allergies, only I didn't know that until about a year ago. I am allergic to SOY, which happens to be in just about everything. I have been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and ADD, but have been medication free with NO anxiety for over a year, since I stopped eating soy. If there is anyone who has questions about soy allergies, please feel free to ask, I probably have the answer!! I can't wait to start reading some posts. Take Care, Gina
