Way to Go Irene!

It's funny how each Dr. has a different opinion. I wish my Dr. wuld have thought more on the lines of your Dr.

That great news Irene, by the way that's my middle name, after my grandmother. I went through just about the same as yourself one year ago March; however, since my Mom had (3) different cancers in her lifetime, breast, colon, and bone, the oncologist recommended the 5-year medication. I struggled with the decision, but decided to endure it. My mother's sister has now been diagnosed with breast cancer, very early stage.and just started radiation.

Continue reading these forums, this breast cancer team is like family, we cry together, we laugh together, we heal together and we encourage survival together.

Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels.

Good Morning - I had my appointment with the surgeon and medical oncologist last Wednesday - 5/14/14 - surgeon was quite happy with the way the breast looks - might not need to do additional surgery to get both breasts the same, time will tell.

Now for the Medical Oncologist - she went over my records and then wrote down all the info about different meds - including the side effects of them - then gave me the great news that based on my age, the fact that the cancer was Stage 1 & Grade 1, that the lymph nodes were not affected and based on that the % of recurrence is 10% over the next 10 years - my cure % is 90% therefore she did not and is not recommending meds. I am absolutely delighted - I am not a medication person - I'd rather work on taking care of the situation by changing my lifestyle.

Don't get me wrong, if she had not said that , and prescribed a medication I certainly would have taken it.

I wish you all the best ...

I've used 2 of the meds. The Arimidex can case bone density loss. That was the 2nd one I was on. I had terrible aching issues on that so I'm now back on the Tamoxifen which raises your chances of getting Uterine Cancer or blood clots. Right now I'm not very happy with my clinic because my Oncologist didn't give me any refills this last time for my Tamoxifen and when I contacted the clinic to see if he would call it in, the nurse said I needed to see a Dr. before I could get it. Seriously? It's for Cancer and I'm almost 100% sure he goofed up on that. So I made an appt. , then contacted them to let them know and they called in a prescrip. I will pick it up today and see how many pills I have. If it's enough to get me till Aug. or close to it when I have my reg. appt. I will cancel this appt. I'm not going to pay for a Dr. visit just to have him give me the meds. It's ridiculous. I'm sure I could've called my surgeon and he would've talked to my Dr., but I didn't feel that I had to go to all of the trouble with this.

Having such an early stage cancer, I'm not sure how much taking this drug matters. I think we're totally paranoid that the cancer will come back so we're willing to take these meds. in hopes that it won't.

Hi Mater88 - At this point the only thing I know about the meds the Medical Onclogist will be recommending is one that does not reduce bone density. My client/friend tells me that the side affects she has are "hot flashes". I never had them since I was on the HRT and then in 2002 when I went off them I started taking Black Cohash (started with Remifemin at doctors suggestion) which stopped the Hot flashes.

What side effects are you having?

I am going to be taking 1-2 products from my health and wellness company - it's Tegreen & Reishi Max - Medical Oncologist is not happy about it as she thinks they are "concentrated" but they are not - they are pure forms and have helped people - not cured - people in this situation.

Make it a great day....

Irene

RichLady39,

It sounds like you went through pretty much the same as I did. I did HRT also. I'm sure that didn't help. It was recommended to me to take the meds for 5 years. My medical oncologist said that in five years they may recommend taking it another 5 years. I've had some side effects but it has gotten better. I've been on them since March, 2013. I sailed through surgery and radiation with all the energy I have ever had. But starting the meds was a real setback in terms of energy. But in the last month my energy has improved significantly. I am not a risk taker (except for the HRT) and have stayed on the meds and will continue. Good luck to you! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Welcome to the team Irene!

I'm currently in treatment for stage IV breast cancer.

emoticon all for the responses - I wish you all the best. I had 33 radiation treatments - 28 were for the entire area and the last 5 were directed to the surgical site. The Radiation facility was wonderful and the people there very nice and caring. The facility has been in my area for quite sometime and a 7 minutes trip. It was interesting, the surgeon is part of a national radiation oncology group and she wanted me to that group which was about 30 minutes away, didn't make sense to me, but relented and said ok - I put my prayers out and a few days before my 1st appt with them I got a call that the company was selling the building that the facility was in and they just purchased the group that I wanted to use - they have 8/9 facility in the area where I am. My prayers were answered and my early morning trip - including treatment - a total of 30 minutes.

I was told that I would be on medication for 5 years, but I am going to explore that further. I have a client who went thru the same situation and was told by the surgeon that she did not need to take the medication even though the oncologist prescribed it. She decided "better be safe than sorry" and is continuing to take it.

My story also is similar to yours. I just want to say be patient with yourself. I have had very little weight loss since this all happened in Jan 2013. I consider it good that I have been able to maintain my 85 pound weight loss through all of it. Meds can really mess with your eating and weight/gaining. Some can make you feel weak or dizzy etc. So do the best you can and keep on your journey with hope. One day at a time.

Hi Irene,
My story is like yours. Found out in March after a lumpectomy that I had DCIS stage 1 grade 1. Margins and lymph nodes clear. I will be starting radiation tomorrow. Will be doing 35 treatments. I saw the Oncologist last week I don't need any oral medications.

Hi Irene and welcome to the team no-one wants to join!

I'm a 4-year survivor with a story very similar to yours - stage I grade I caught by yearly mammogram, lumpectomy & radiation, and slowly back to exercise and weight management. We're all here for support, questions (no such thing as a dumb one) and a common joy in being alive and remaining positive.

emoticon - I am new to this team but not new to SP - 6 months ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer revealed from an annual routine mammogram. I was fortunate - it was stage 1 and grade 1 - after surgery was informed that all the margins were clear and it had not gone to the lymph nodes. Also understand that since I took HRT years ago that could have been a contributing factor. emoticon

Had a lumpectomy in February and finished radiation treatments 10 days ago. Beginning to get my energy back and getting back to my life.

I am also working on getting the balance of the weight off - need to be more diligent in this area especially starting back to exercising, which I prefer doing in the early morning - that means getting to bed earlier and up earlier.

Happy to be part of this team.

Make it a great day... emoticon
