Hi Everyone!

I'm new to Spark People and new to Cycling... I bought a road bike a couple of weeks ago. I am really enjoying it and hope to improve as time progresses.

I have never been into cycling...but my husband participates in triathalons and I thought it would be a great thing for us to do together...and of course help me get in shape!

I look forward to getting to know you all!

Christa

Well, I am a returning member...my DH loves cycling and I try to love it! But honestly I am getting to where I enjoy it a lot more then I used to (Yea stratigically placed padded shorts!)...not to mention I do not end up with the heel pain I do with other things due to my plantar faciatis...

Been riding more this year, and would like to continue...we did a 26 mile ride yesterday in 2 hours and 15 minutes...

Hello Everyone!!!

I used to bike frequently when I was a teenager. I have been getting into spinning for the last year and last month I bought a bike and I have been cycling about 2-3 times a week. I am looking forward to being involved with this group.

Hi,

I am about to get back into cycling. When I was in highschool and university I did lots of cycling, but then my bike was stolen and I had no money to replace it at the time (a university student).... So now that I'm getting back into shape, I'm borrowing my brother's bike and going to start training again.

My goal this summer is to ride around the island our summer place is on which will be about a 30km trek, its quite rolling too....

MRSSUZSTAR,

I'm with Vontan -- take the free bike! I put fatter tires on my Trek hybrid and use it on cinder trails and then less fat tires for road riding and paved greenways. I wrecked back in November 2008 and wanted more tire surface on the road.

MAKULEWAHINE,

I love self-starters! You could get a women's cycling club started or mixed gender club -- print up some flyers and set the membership fee at something reasonable ($25/yr is for my group) and schedule some casual group rides to get to know each other. Talk with local bike shops to see if they would be willing to sponsor your club initially by allowing you to hold a meeting at their shop and have one of their employees do a little teaching/training (ideas: proper bike fit, how to change a flat tire, proper way to clean/oil chain, etc.) and you could bring snacks and have a short ride before or after the meeting. The bike shops around here do that for us and it's great. We also support the shops by purchasing things we need from them for our bikes and joining in on activities that they sponsor.

Come up with a catchy name -- ours in "Knox Revolution" -- great group of women.

MRSSUZSTAR,

It is never too late to go back to school. I love pharmacy. I work as a CVS Pharmacy Intern part-time while I'm on clinical rotations this last year. Rotation work is for free, but I earn money as an intern. I gain experience in both settings though. I love counseling patients and helping them with their medical needs.

I was 45 when I started back to school. Mark graduated as an interior designer on a Saturday, started his first job with an architect firm the following Monday, and that MOnday I quit my job as a certified tech and enrolled in undergraduate classes full time -- that was 7 years ago. I never thought I'd be here at last with only one more year to go! You'll get older whether you go to school or not, so give it a go. School is my job -- I take it seriously and have missed many outings, etc. because I had to study for exams or prepare presentations, but it's been worth it. My husband is very supportive and my biggest fan. My adult daughter (she's 26) has also been very supportive and source of help when I've been frustrated by one thing or another. There are many days I've wondered out loud "What the hell was I thinking coming back to school at my age?", but I know the answer -- to have a better life and a career that I love.

Go to school woman -- it will not be wasted time.

Welcome Vontan. I don't have a road bike but a good friend is trying to give me his old Trek. He hasn't used it in ages and has a newer one so he wants to give me the old one. I'm seriously considering taking it but I feel bad because then I would be the only one with a road bike as my hubby and daughter both have mountain bikes. We'll see. We are suppoed to go for a ride with our friend and see what the bike is like when we are there. I'll let you know what happens. :)

Hi everyone, been cycling off an on all my life. I currently have a 20 yr old mtn bike that's seen better days, it does the job as far as fitness goes, but I want to be able to go on long rides, maybe join a club and who knows maybe even race at some point. I am in the market for a new road bike, so I've been doing tons of research trying to figure out what to get. For various reasons I will probably get a Trek WSD and am thinking either 1.2, 1.5 or 2.1. I am wondering too if the 2.1 cost wise is worth paying the extra over the lower priced 1.2 or even the 1.5. It seems the more I shop the more my budget keeps going up! Originally I wanted the 1.5 but now I am leaning toward the 2.1. I need to buy already before I start to look at even more expensive ones. There are 3 lbs that all carry trek and they have them all in stock so I'll be riding them in the next few days and thought if anyone has one of these models they might like to give a review and if they are happy with it.

Welcome Marie! How funny that you are going for a Pharm D. I am seriously considering doing that, though my hubby is worried about me starting out at almost 40 on it. I'll have to show him your info and that you are doing it at 52! That ROCKS! You go girl!

Welcome, Marie. Sounds like you are doing a great job on your bicycle. I wish we had a women's cycling club here. I may have to start one. I am 68 and have been biking for about 6 years. 25 mile with wicked hills is awesome. I ride by myself mostly unless I am doing an organized ride or once a week with some friends. The oldest in that group is in his 80's so I have a good mentor.

Keep on getting out there. Sounds like you are very busy but pretty balanced also.

Been cycling since July 2008 -- few set backs with wrecks/injuries and now wet southern weather, but getting back in on daily/weekly rides with a local women's cycling club or other riding friends. My husband and I did ride the Tour de Cure event this year -- I did the 25 miles -- with lots of wicked hills here in east Tennessee.

I ride primarily for fitness and fun. I'm 52 years old and a fourth year doctoral pharmacy candidate -- will graduate as a Pharmacist May 2010. I'm currently on clinical rotations with more of a normal schedule than regular classroom work. My husband Mark and I ride lots of paved greenways in our city and do some road riding. One of our favorite weekend rides is a 34-mile round trip from our house. We're taking a riding trip to the Virginia Creeper Trail tomorrow and hope to get in around 40 miles -- so I guess I'll definitely meet the team goal for the week.

Nice to meet some other cyclists.

Hi All,

Enjoyed cycling years ago and am looking forward to doing some riding again!

I live in IL. We have had rain followed by more rain. So far my riding has been spin class on the weekends - hoping for a dry July!

Welcome Lyndsay. I am from WA too and love the bike trails around here. My seat still gets sore some times but I have a good bike seat, Terry butterfly, which has a slit in the middle of it to take some pressure off. However, I am finding that my weight is coming off at the most unwanted places, like right over my sitting bones! I wear padded shorts, also Terry (they make stuff just for women). The more you ride, though, the less you hurt. Just enjoy the ride!

Hello - new to this group - looking at it but just finally joined. I started SP in August lost 30 lbs so far. Just started riding in January - first trip was 7 miles and my crotch was numb, I walked bow legged, and also felt like rubber emoticon with a borrowed bike. DH started riding to work last summer and now feels guilty if he drives the car. He has a street bike and mountain bike for whatever mood he is in. He does Mountain biking with co-workers...

I have a Schwinn road bike and don't have all the gears he has so the hills are a stretch for me - when he wizzes on I sometimes stop, walk if I can't stand up and peddle on. I like to stay on the casual rides and we usually do 18 - 30 mile day trip with a picnic and sightseeing. I have a gel seat AND padded pants (I know wimp) and get along great except for sore muscles sometimes, not too bad shape for almost 57.

I had gotten on a plateau and adding the new biking to my exercise program has given that a boost. We try to go middle of the week to stay out of the crowds of walkers and bikers - since we work retail on weekends and get the day off during week. We live on busy streets and don't like sharing the road with zooming cars - so we seek out trails on days off.
Linda

Hi, I'm Julie from Alberta, Canada. I mountain bike and love that I'm always challenged on the trails - there's always at least one hill that keeps me trying harder :O) So yeah, I get back down and try again! Love it!

Hi Lyndsay! I will tell you the ONLY thing that works for me is my padded bike shorts. I can go for hours riding with those on and not feel it at all. If I don't wear them, even with my gel padded seat cover, I can't go but about 10 minutes without pain. SO...I say invest in both a seat cover AND some padded shorts! :)

Hi Lyndsay! Welcome to the fun of biking!

I found the best thing for your kind of problem is to take the weight off my backside by standing in the pedals every 5 min or so for just 10 seconds or so. But even doing that, you're going to have to kind of "toughen up" those new sitting spots! I'll be curious is some of the other more experienced members of this team have remedies! I've wondered if there are better seats than others. I had a seat that was actually made of 2 halves, split down the center, but I haven't used it since I got my new bike. I can't remember the brand name on it. Seems like it helped some, too. But standing to get a little circulation going seems to do more good than anything for me.

Happy riding!

Hi! I'm Lyndsay, 20 years old from Washington. I just began biking...yesterday :). I biked trails around my boyfriends house with him for 2 hours, and absolutely loved it! I am about to leave to go at it again! Was wondering how the rest of you deal with how bad my butt hurts!!! What have you all found that works against that?

Not sure if I introduced myself so I will take time to do it now.

I have just picked up biking as a way of life about 3 months ago. I try to bike to and from work everyday (11 miles total), usually getting in everyday, and go on longer bike rides on the weekend (15 - 20 at least). I am currently in Fort Wayne, IN and find there is a lot of good roads to bike on and beautiful scenery. I have a Novara Fusion commuter bike which is great. I have lost over 35 lbs. and hope to keep going. I did my first extended bike ride (30 miles at an avg. 13 MPH !) yesterday and it was great! I had no goal to do it but my feet just kept me going. I figure the better shape I get in, the further I will be able to ride.

For anyone looking to trade in their car for their bike, I recommend Urban Biker' Tricks and Tips by Mr. Bike Dave Glowacz. It has been a great help (especially for the rain riding) and I find that without it my transition was much tougher.

Welcome to the group. That sucks about the spoke. My hubby is so funny about that stuff. He would try to fix it right where we sat! ;) Hope you get it fixed soon so you can be back on the road!

Hi all,

I'm new to SP but not to biking. Major bummer yesterday as I had a spoke break about 10 miles from home. Not to be deterred, it will be fixed and I will be back on the bike in no time. Good luck to everyone with getting healthier and riding their bike!!!

Hello from Missouri! I'm new to SP and pleased to find this team. Since I don't know anything "official" about biking, I'm hoping to glean lots of info.

I love to bike! Right now I'm trying to get back into shape and am hoping the biking will help me burn calories while I enjoy being outside in the summer. I ride gravel roads as well as a state blacktop...the blacktop can be a little scary because there are no shoulders, but I wear protective gear to make me more visible. I'm within 40 miles of the west end of the Katy Trail, but no closer trails for daily riding. Riding the Katy from start to finish is one of my goals.

I'm a high school math teacher, so during the school year my biking can be limited. This coming year I want to ride to or from school (13.6 mi) at least twice a week while the weather is favorable...biggest problem is enough daylight to make it safely on the above-mentioned shoulderless road. I am fortunate in that my husband teaches at the same school and thus I can haul my bike one direction or the other.

For this summer, though, I'm trying to ride AT LEAST 3 days a week. I usually ride 60-90 minutes, that's 10-15 miles. I want to learn more about what cadence (I think that's the term) is best for burning calories. All comments appreciated!

Thanks, Suzan. :-)

I did try the cleated shoes on Tuesday and they were much nicer than the enormous toeclips. I found I could sprint with a much higher cadence than before...

I guess I will swap the pedals over on my bike sooner than I thought.

Hi Everyone,

I used to be a century cyclist in my teens and 20s and also love swimming. I have an old knee injury that prevents me from running without paying heavily for it the following few days.

I'm up to the point of spinning for an hour 2x/week and have begun riding outside again.

I'm very much a retro-grouch, still using my Peugeot U-O9 touring frame that I bought in high school with babysitting money. Over the years it's undergone some improvements, most notably a repaint and braze-ons courtesy of frame builder JP Weigle.

I'm still using toeclips too, but that will change soon because the local bike shop convinced me to buy cleated shoes that I can also use for the spinning (I can't stand the giant toeclips on the spinning bikes.)

I've started doing laps before water aerobics to get more cardio in and just did a half mile on Wed.

SO... I've decided to train for the 2010 Aquabike portion of the local half-iron that is held every July: www.musselmantri.com

If they had an aquabike sprint, I would consider doing it next month, because I'm sure I could complete it. I'm kind-of chicken, though, and don't want to invest in a shorty wetsuit that I would just have to replace when I lose the rest of the weight. By July next year I should be much much closer to my goal weight.

So instead I'll just go for the long course on the two sports that I can safely do. :-)

Hello from Kansas, a great bike riding state, a lot of it is table top flat, which is great for someone just returning to the sport. I lived on my bike as a kid and it was my main transport in college, it is great to get back on, and it is "just like riding a bike, you don't forget how".
