Welcome Charlotte -- I think it is amazing that you would go on a 5K hike at 64, or any other age for that matter! Wow! Impressive!

I have a sister that lives in Marysville, but right off the top of my head I can't think of any members that live there. There just be some though, I don't have a record of where everyone lives. I live in a suburb of Phoenix. My season of activity will start soon -- I live for winters as it's the only time we have decent weather here. I mean -- who can WALK when it is 105 out?

Love your ID name. I used to be 145 (haha) didn't we all? I'm getting closer, but haven't made it to that number just yet.

You might want to do this as far as posting:
Introduce Yourself Here -- for newcoming to tell us info about themselves.

Monthly Weigh In -- Beginning of each month, please record your weight here.

SUMMER CHAT ROOM -- I would suggest letting us know about your progress as well as slip-ups here. It's a general chat room, about anything or nothing. And I or someone always tries to answer each note.

Hugs, Eve

Hi, I just found this team and I like what I see. I am in a small town in Beautiful Washington State. I've been on SP since mid July and just love the support and friendships that I have found here. I have lost 25 lbs since last spring, not all of it on SP but this really helps me to stay on track and now I know I will achieve my goal weight.
Last Saturday I went on a 5k hike in an Animal Wildlife park with my Washington State Sparkpeople team, and I came in DEAD LAST, but I finished. It was actually the very first organized hike I've ever done, and I'm 64!!

I made a friend who was living nearby, but she and her husband are "snowbirds" and go South in the winter. I sent her a link and hope to see her name show up soon.

I am a little lost reading all the different topics. Which one do you log on your monthly weigh-in? I have been weighing in every Monday, but would like to join your challenge as well.

Check out my page. Is anyone else from the Pacific Northwest? Any bulldog lovers?

Charlotte

After a very long time, I thought I would check in and update my status, and say Hi to anyone still there who remember's me. I am doing well, have had some setbacks, but not in the weight loss department. My goal has always been my Sparkpeople name, Iwillbe145. I am able to see the goal line now, I weighed in this morning at 152. I still have nearly 10 lbs to go, and I can see by my belly that I will want to continue loosing until I have a waistline again, but I am so happy to have come so far.

Oh, Gayle, how lovely to have you as a new member, and I hope perhaps your husband will join in as well, does he belong to SP? You sound kind of like me, I was also a Real Estate Agent just before I retired, although I did not have a medical problem that caused me to retire. Rather it was the fact that my husband died, and the incentive seemed to be gone, life wasn't much fun for awhile, so I just gave up on the real estate. I sure know what you mean about living on SS, and all I have besides that is two IRA's. Luckily everything I have is paid for so I don't have a lot of expenses each month, still it is a good term "The Wonder Years" -- you either spend your time wondering what the hell just happened, or what is going to happen next! Well, we're alive and can still write.

Hope to see you posting often, we need more people who will write in and share stories.

So Welcome to Our Team!
Hugs, Eve

Hello everyone.

I guess you can say my DH and I are fully retired.

I had heart surgery last month that totally put me
at home for good, for the most part.

I was a Real Estate Agent. I still have an active license, but not used it in almost a year.

My husband is fully retired and we now live on SS and
Pensions. I understand that this is suppose to be the golden years. I find it more like the wonder years, wondering what is going to happen next.

Our children are all out of the house and we now live
with 2 dogs. An akida and an elk hound. Both my son's dogs, but we are their primary keepers, because
he is in the military.

This sounds like a good group that I would like to get to know.

Hugs to all,
Gayle

Hello, I'm Margo and I don't know if I'm either senior or retired emoticon

I'm "only" 57 and my husband, Scott (which is what drew me to you in the Writer's team, Scotmama, LOL) is 65 this year and he's definately retired (we have a little pension to prove it :-) but when he was going to retired, I quit my job as its purpose was met and we moved from our huge rambler of 20 years on an acre, to a tiny townhouse on the Chesapeake Bay.

Now I wake each morning and open the sliding glass door to the balcony off my bedroom and look for my favorite blue herons, comorants, and ospreys while checking to see if anyone's out fishing or interesting boats coming/going. Then there's the ducks in my front yard, but that's another story:

Good Morning Grenehaven -- as you can see, we Retired Seniors are a quieter group. But you can always find a remark eager to come from me -- except yesterday, I just wasn't feeling quite up to par, so I turned off the computer and headed for bed early. I think it was digestion problems or something.

Anyway, today is another day, right? Don't forget to weigh in tomorrow morning on the "Monthly Weigh In" so we can see how everyone is doing. As for me, I think I might have actually gained a pound over the entire month. Damn medications! I'm going to have to have a talk with my doctor, not that he cares if I gain weight or not. He's only interested in keeping my blood pressure and cholesterol where it belongs -- the weight problem he leaves up to me.

Hugs, Eve emoticon

My brother is older than me and just now has grandkids. But his kids did not start early. I was 18 when I got married but 21 when first child was born. Son was 22 when he got married had his two kids one at ate 23 and the one that has the great grands when he was 24. Now she was the young one but I think she was 19 when her oldest was born.

Wow - Great grandkids. They are adorable looking. I love my grandkids to pieces. You must have had kids early. My Mom is 87 and her oldest great grandchild is 11 and the youngest is the one I babysit - she's 16 months. My mom lives right down the road so she gets to see everyone in the family often. Keep up your exercising and eating healthy - you are an important part of their life and need to be around a lot longer.

I just ready your post about my paintings. No I don't have then displayed on my walls. I keep them displayed on a wooden rack and on an easel in my bedroom I use as a painting space. I will check out your other team - Home Decorating. I love my house and am just now in the planning stage for decorating my vacation house my husband is building us in Volcano. I wanted to tell you that I am jazzed your exercising - I am going to pick up where I left off Friday. My husband and I don't dance but I know it is great exercise. Have a wonderful day.

Wow - 60 minutes walking is fabulous Sparkarino. I wonder a lot if it isn't better to walk outside than using a treadmill. When I walk up a hill I can feel it way more than when I use the incline on my treadmill. I might just start walking down at the track sometimes - I used to before I got an exercise room.

Eve, great that your weight is moving down. Small steps in the right direction is the Spark way to go. And that is great, Judy -- back down in the 60's, woo hoo. Sounds like you are both doing great with the exercising, too. emoticon

I am hanging in, eating healthy and walked 60 minutes yesterday (30 of it was uphill, too!) It's cloudy, but milder today, will head out soon for my walkies. Have a great Sunday, everybody!

Hi Everyone! I've been busy all day, but wanted to tell you my weight dropped a little bit again, so I'm now at 153.4. Judy, I'm soooo happy that the scale finally MOVED! About time, huh? You really deserved that.....don't get on it for awhile again after the 5-star dining tonight. Boy! That sounds like a fabulous treat, and I'd love to see your water color or pastels (chalk?). Do you use your own art around your house for decor? You know I have another team called "Home Decorating."

I did exercise today, 25 minutes on the treadmill and then did my weight exercises. Plus tonight at the Country club hubby and I danced several times and one of them especially left me huffing and puffing. haha

Talk to you all tomorrow. Have a good night!

Eve - I am down in Volcano doing a 2 day pastel workshop which is fabulous. But the real news is when I got on the scale this morning I weighed 169. I looked down at the scale and at first I couldn't understand what I was reading. I haven't been in the 160s for over a year. The weight finally came off. It was a combination of 6 days straight of exercise - -it had to be. I wasn't doing anything different than the week before except exercise. Course I have been watching my drinking - I love a beer and a glass of wine. I have been watching that for over a month though so it had to be the exercise. We're in a lovely bed and breakfast and it is a flash flood warning here on this side of the island. Here at Kilauea Volcano it is about 62 high and 50 low. I love the cold when you are used to sunny Kona. Course I wouldn't want a steady diet. Gotta go - going out to a 5 star restaurant and I am not going to overeat. Just thought you'd like to know the scale finally budged.

I weighed this morning, stayed the same as the ticker. I really need to lose, I have 8 pounds to get back to my goal. DH birthday is tomorrow (73), I fixed roast beef, mashed potatoes, gravy, carrots, green beans, hot rolls, angelfood cake and jello with fruit. I did not do too bad but pretty much have my calories for the day.
Sun is shining here today and almost 50 degrees. The snow is slowly melting, supposed to be warmer tomorrow and then more snow after that. Six more weeks of winter according to the ground hog.

I made a small batch of brownie's today -- topped them off with chopped up walnuts. Also made a BIG pot of vegetable soup with a few pieces of leftover stew meat that was frozen. It is now almost dinner time and it smells delicious -- it will be soooo good with bread and butter. Yummy!

I had good intentions of hitting the gym this a.m. but when I woke up I had had an allergic reaction to a new medication and my face and hands were both swollen. Only the left side of my face, which is typical (it makes me look more weird that way) lol

Come on everyone -- I don't have weigh in amounts from most of you yet, only from Lynne, Judy and myself. It can't be that bad or that hard. If it's not today, I expect it to be by tomorrow!

Scary, isn't it Eve? That is the way I am, except I don't stop with a couple cookies. I like all kinds, even chocolate. These were peanut butter with peanuts and butterscotch chips. Really sweet but I at them anyway. Doing better today and trying to stay away for the cookies.

Hi Marlene -- what a delightful way to spend part of the day. Baking cookies. I'll bet your house smells soooooo good, I'd love to be able to join you for a couple cookies and a glass of milk. Even now, with my new lifestyle, I think that is one of the best afternoon or evening snacks there is. I love nearly ANY KIND OF COOKIES, not hot on chocolate though, so chocolate chip is not a big incentive to me. Peanut butter or oatmeal raisin -- big favorites and also molasses. Gee, maybe tomorrow I would have time to make a few. I love them nice and soft, not quite done, as soon as they come out of the oven. Of course I'm crazy about raw cookie dough too.

Hugs, Eve emoticon

Snowed in for the day and not doing good with the eating. Made cookies and ate some, too sweet. Not used to that much sugar, but I ate the anyway. I started to go to work but the snow was blowing so bad that I turned around and came back home. Now the sun is shining.but still cold and windy.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I do love my cooking and that is probably what I need to think about. I do a lot of taste testing. Yesterday I made chili all day long and I love the broth from the bollati beans I used. So all day I sipped on the broth and smelled the pot of beans. I also made cornbread using coarse ground cornmeal and whole wheat. I logged in 2 pieces but I nibbled a little bit as they first came out of the oven. They were to die for with butter and honey. And yes I even logged in the butter. I won't give up because I am learning about myself. But darnit I want to be down a pound or two by weigh in Friday. I have never been a size 6 in my life. I would be ecstatic to be a size 10 and amazed to be a size 12 again. I've never been over a size 14 but that's cuz I chose elastic around the waist. Have a great evening Eve.

Don't give up Judy! I think you are doing great with all the exercise you do. Perhaps you need to cut back on portion sizes just a little??

I have a feel that even if it doesn't look that good come February 1st for our weigh-in, by the next month rolls around, you will either be down pounds or inches. After all, what do we care what we weigh if we can get down to a size 6 dress (or whatever your goal may be).

Hi Gals -- we've got a new member MUNCHKIN1944. She is 64 years old, retired in 2004 and she's a short little gal, only 4'8.

So if any of you want to welcome her, she signed in under the thread "Hi Everyone" (I think - where is my memory anymore?????)

Talk more later. Eve emoticon

I am afraid of the low carb diets. I prefer to eat balanced with all food groups. I have a friend when needing to lose weight, buy big slabs of cheese, bacon and the like. I wonder about the trans fats and cholesterol.

I know someone else who had good success with a low-carb diet, too. She had high fat stuff like cream, butter, cheese, meat/fish/chicken and lots of veggies (but not potatoes, peas, corn). Very little or none in the way of fruit, rice, pasta, bread (only low carb bread). I am not ready to give up my fruit just yet, but have reduced rice, pasta and bread and increased veggies and protein. Whatever course you take, it takes time, and the important thing is to be consistent over time and stick with it.

Thanks - I'll check out the web site. I thought for sure I would drop weight this morning but I am still up a couple pounds from my lowest. I've been exercising, keeping within my calorie count, keeping the alcohol down and still....nothing. Discouraging but not discouraged as in want to quit. I was a little encouraged looking at my arms in the mirror and seeing a little more definition in the muscles. Course I have always been muscular but still yet - I can see a small difference.

I lost my weight by cutting calories. But I eat three meals a day. One diet that I have good luck with is to eat 5 meals a day consisting of one carb, one protein and all the free vegetables you want a day. fruit, breads, cereals are all carbs.

Marlene - that is commendable eating just vegetables when you have a big lunch. I get so full when I eat a big lunch I barely want dinner anyways. If I just have vegetables and go to bed - I promise you I will get up and eat something - anything - because I am so ravenous. But I also know that is how my oldest daughter stays at 115 - when her weight starts heading up - she makes dinner for her family and saves her dinner for lunch the next day. She is always telling me if you want to lose weight Mom, you've got to go to bed hungry. I simply can't. My question to you is - how did you lose all that weight? Any tips? From Judy

Hi,
I love nuts and also peanut butter. Have to be careful.

I have been gone all day, went to Wichita to get a mammogram. It was windy here when we left early this morning by the time we got to Wichita we were in a blizzard. It took us two hours to get there. My appointment was at 11 and when I got out the sun was shining. They always say in Kansas if you don't like the weather, wait it will change and it did. We ate at Red Lobster today, DH birthday is Sunday. I did fairly well but calories are gone for today. I will eat vegetables this evening.

Hi Sherl and Eve- Yes,it is warm and sunny in Hawaii. We do have our winter weather here in the form of big storms with huge winter surf swells. Our spring is still a couple months away and is announced by the blue blossoms of Jacaranda, yellow and pink shower tree blossoms, and bright yellow from the Gold tree.

Speaking of nuts - I can't have them in the pantry. If they are easily accessible I grab a handful then later another handful and later ... I get on the scale and say #*!! So now I put packages of walnuts and pecans in the freezer. I take out 10 nuts per person for our tosses green salads or fruit salads. My husband appreciates this technique too - he loves nuts but they are just too easy to overinduldge.

I forgot the names of everyone on our team - I saw it in an email you wrote Eve. I pray that is your name or I will be embarrassed.

Hi Shirl emoticon
The nuts will do the trick. They advise a small handful (Hey! I've got big hands, that'll work.) They say a small handful will give you all the benefits that nuts have but will still be in the calorie range of a healthy snack, which I am assuming is 100-200 calorie range.

I made big veggie omelets yesterday for lunch and my downfall was eating 3 of the Pillsbury Grands biscuits that I made to go with it. Ahh! Was it worth the pound I gained? Probably. Just goes to show you though, it wasn't 3500 calories that caused me to gain a pound. It was only about 300!

Hi everybody - nice weather so far today in Phoenix, but Shirl is expecting snow! Bet Judy has good weather in Hawaii, as well as MaryJane in S.Calif.
So it looks like we have 3 of us in warm weather and 3 of us in pretty cold weather. But are we doing any exercise?

Good Morning...

We've had our taste of spring the past 3 days. Now winter is back with a vengeance! Our high was 50 at midnight. It's now about 35 and heading down with gloomy skies. Supposed to rain and maybe snow. Darn...I have to go for groceries.

Actually I haven't changed my wt chart for some time. I'm about 5 lbs heavier than it reads. Not sure what I'm eating wrong. The only thing I can think of is nuts...but they're supposed to be good for you. Guess I need to cut down the amt. Since I have diabetes, I keep close tabs on my carbs.

Have a good day.

If we want to go on vacation we can go see Browney?? It would be nice to be warm in January.

I do the same thing day in and day out. Nothing much to write about. Our DS came to see us this evening and stayed for a sandwich. He and his girlfriend broke up and he is kind of down. But such is life.

It was a little warmer here today but the wind was really blowing.

I can't even imagine any more what cold feels like. We do have snow here on the Big Island of Hawaii but only on the tops of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. During the holidays I do yearn for a snowy day like the ones I used to know in the Sierra Mountains.

We are building a vacation home near Kilauea Volcano in Volcano Village.I love spending time there because of the art community. So much goes on there I like - lots of art classes. Have a great day and keep those cats indoors! I bet they are a blast batting at snowflakes.

Boy -26 celcius must be enough to freeze your balls off (if you have them). I don't even know how cold that is because I'm not smart enough to have celcius and kg and all that stuff converted in my head; but I was born and raised in Minnesota -- way up by International Falls and I know how it feels to be
-40 degrees Fahrenheit -- gives you a headache just to have it touching your forehead.

Hey! That's why I moved to California and am now retired in AZ. Humidity bothers me, but so does cold weather.

By the way, look at the "Fun" thread I added and tell us what YOU ate that's fattening.

Hi, just checking in. We had a bunch of snow yesterday, about 5 inches of it and there's more on the way tonight. It's a lot for us, so it causes quite a kerfluffle when it snows, especially when it's cold enough to stick around which it is right now. Watching my cat tiptoeing through it this morning was pretty funny -- she bravely went into the fray for about 6 steps and then she stopped to assess the experience -- and then stepped backwards 6 steps to get out of it. My other cat just watched. My son lives in Edmonton, Alberta these days, he's been there just over a year, and it's supposed to be -26 Celcius today! I can't even imagine. I talked to him last night because I thought he should put the heater-thingy on his car overnight. He doesn't have indoor parking space either! He wasn't too worried, this is his second Alberta winter, but he does hope to come back out to the coast this year sometime. Ohmigod, I will be so relieved.

OK, I will do weight-in on Feb 1.

Hi Shirl -- I guess some of them aren't too talkative but then, we just went through the week-end and I've noticed that there aren't as many posts on Saturday and Sunday as there are during the week.

Sometimes it's good not to have too many posts to read and sometimes it leaves you lonely. I am in one group called "Mind/Body/Soul" and if I want to read all the posts I get nothing else done in the entire morning but looking at all that has been written. I've decided I just can't spend that much time reading about stuff like that. After all, the calories used sitting here at the computer are minimal, right?

Hey, girlfriend -- you've got a birthday coming up in a little over a month! Or are you trying to forget about that? Shall we splurge with cake and ice cream? Actually my favorite is pecan pie -- now there's a fattening dessert if I ever saw one. But the way I look at it is this, if you're going to sin make it a good one!

Don't forget to check into the EXERCISE CHALLENGE for February, and is your weight accurate (171.5) to start out our new WEIGH IN. Don't forget, that starts on February 1st, but it's only once a month.

Have a great day! emoticon emoticon Eve

Good Morning...

The retired seniors aren't too talkative, are they? Maybe everyone is just tired of winter...waiting for spring to break thru.

Frankly, there's not much new on my horizon...which is a good thing, I guess. No news is good news.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Shirl, glad to see there is at least one other cat person on the team! I really enjoyed the fostering, but the reason I didn't continue is because of my two adult cats -- who were quite offended, and threatened by having kittens in their space (in their face was more like it, especially the little male, named Prince Charming by my granddaughter - he was feisty!)

I really am an animal lover (although, like Judy, I do sometimes find large free roaming dogs threatening). I know Eve is a 'pet person', too; she has a photo of her adorable little dog, Amber, on her page. Taking your dog for a walk must be good exercise, I should get one, too (oh, my cats would be really thrilled with that)!

Morning, All...

Can't stay long. DS is going to IM me at 8:00.

Lynne: Good for you...fostering kittens. I'm a cat person myself. Much of my donation $s go to HSUS, ASPCA and a local shelter. I've never fostered. Don't think my kitty would appreciate it.

Good luck on your weigh-ins, etc. I've been on a plateau so long, I doubt I could hack it.

Have a good one.

Maybe we could just have our monthly weigh in on this forum instead of starting a new one. What do you think. I have a time keeping up with all the different forums.

OK, I am in with the monthly weigh-in and exercise challenge. I am not sure how the challenges usually go - do we each choose something to notch it up a bit in whatever way suits our lives, and then make a committment to that for a certain time period and see how we all do with it?

Cheers, Lynne

Great! I will start a new topic soon entited "Weigh In" and all of us should try to weigh in on February 1st, or if you like we can state what our weight is at present, and then if we've managed to lose any by the 1st, well, then we'll look good - right? lol

I do think at our ages that most of us have a much healthier outlook and eat a much healthier diet than we ever thought of when we were in our 20s, 30s and perhaps even into our 40s. I was actually very slim and toned until I reached 50. Then disaster struck when my husband and I decided to go into business for ourselves and began putting in 12-14 hour days and eating ALL our meals in RESTAURANTS! I gained 25 pounds within a few short months, and all those pounds were so friendly they just stayed on and all became best friends. Now, since facing high blood pressure and a raise in cholesterol, I've decided it is time to get serious out exercise and cheating on how I eat. Time to change my easy going lifestyle.

Yes! We need an exercise challenge. I have already signed up on Spark America for 90 minutes of exercise per week, which = 4,680 minutes per year! So far I'm ahead of the game. What would all of you consider a fair challenge? Give me some feedback and I'll implement a new Topic entitled "Exercise Challenge" and I'll even track things for us, and give either a weekly or monthly report on how we're doing. Fair?

Talk to you all tomorrow. Get that feedback on your next post, gals.

Hugs, Eve emoticon

Have not had time to catch up here lately. Been on the run. Today is my day to clean and do laundry and I have been gone all day helping DH. But, hey! he is the most important, the house work will always be here. We ate out today and not real good choices so probably am going to yo-yo again. Monthly weigh ins are okay with me. I am on two challenges right now but that does not matter. I am team leader on one and have not been being a real good example.

I think my fat is stuck tightly to me and the only way I'm going to get it off is to start taking exercise more seriously. I agree, we all sound so healthy. We had to change because we can't eat like we did in our 20's, 30's, and 40's. I also know my priorities are on my health more now at my age. So along with a weigh in ... how about an exercise challenge? We could come up with something that pushes us, makes it fun and becomes something we are accountable for.

Hi Gals, well here we are almost at the end of January and we'll be starting in with a whole new month. Would you like to have a monthly weigh in?

Reading some of your posts I see that we have a gourmet cook in our presence, Lucky Judy! (she's the one that lives in Hawaii) and yes, Lynne is the same as Sparkarino.

I'm an addict of Starbucks too, but my favorite is frapaccino and I'm sure it's loaded with calories.

Let me know if you want me to have a "Weigh In" topic on this team, and we'll add it. Then we'll just weigh in on the 1st day of every month, or more often if you like. Hey! We all sound like we eat pretty healthy, so if we exercise, we should be getting fit and toned in no time!

Have a Happy Friday!

Good Day Everyone. Got up around 8:00am again today -- I used to be up at 5:00am to get ready for long commute to work, and it took months of retirement before I could sleep in a little bit so I am really enjoying that freedom and restfulness. Went for short walk just after eight this morning to local starbucks for a coffee (just black coffee, no calories at all) and to read the paper.

emoticon Another glorious sunshiney day in Vancouver so I am aiming for 60 minutes walking again today.

Shirl: I know what you mean about Tai Chi -- it's challenging. I tried it, too, and decided that I enjoy yoga more so am taking that. Well done on your daily treadmill exercise, that's great. Hope your hip pain improves though. Any kind of stretching exercise help it at all?

Notice my new profile image -- it's a photo of me with one of the little kittens I fostered last summer - had a brother and sister -- and they were so sweet it was very hard to give them up to permanent homes (but they did get adopted together which was a good thing)

Bye for now, Lynne

Good Morning...

Thanks for getting the names attached to the usernames...much better.

It's jumped up to 20 here this AM with snow. It's been down in the single digits and teens for days.

I walk 30-40 min per day on my treadmill. The past few weeks I've had increasing pain in my hip so hope that doesn't affect my walking. That's the only exercise I do. I took a tai chi class a few months ago. That's not as easy as it looks. Haven't done it since.

Sparkarino: Wish I could stay in bed till 8:00. I'm usually up by 5:30. Earlier in warm weather. In winter I stay in bed till my furnace, which turns on at 5:00, has a chance to take the chill off.

Eve: Is Lynne Sparkarino? I have a big salad at noon usually. I make it in a large vegetable serving bowl and it contains different greens, onions, tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli, sometimes mushrooms, tuna or leftover chicken. I used to sprinkle sliced almonds on it, but, since I use nuts as a dessert or snack, I don't do that any more.

Have a great day. emoticon emoticon

Hi Gals -- haven't been on too much since early this morning, did you miss me? haha

Lynne: you do great with your walking.
Mary Jane: thanks for letting me know your first name, and to all you other members this is Squirt1933 we are talking about. She lives in S. CA
I have a girlfriend in San Diego and she told me it was gloomy and rainy.

It just started to rain here this afternoon, just a sort of mist. I envy you, Judy, being in Hawaii it is almost always nice to walk outside. Get yourself a big stick and carry it, or maybe mace. I'm a dog lover so I don't have that problem.

Well, it's 5:40 here in AZ so time to think about what to eat. Lots of times for dinner I just have a great big salad. But you should see my salads, it has everything but the kitchen sink on it!

Have a great evening everyone!

Good to hear from you, I usually walk about an hour each day, but it's been so cold in the mornings, and then when noon comes i'm not in the mood. Today it is raining, in fact it's supposed to rain all week until Monday. I live in Southern California.
I'm 75 and live alone, so I have no one to blame for my condition except myself, I want to lose at least 20 pounds, hope this site will help, have a good day.

It's a beautiful sunny day here on the Big Island of Hawaii. Relatively speaking, the mornings are a little brisk at 60 degrees lately. I am right on the cusp of getting into my 160's again so I need to pump up my exercise. I think I might start walking outside instead of using my treadmill. I am inspired by the walking I hear everyone doing outside. I am deathly afraid of dogs. If there was something I could carry that would scare them away I would love to walk in neighborhoods. I lost my walking buddy so I have no one to walk with.

Usually I aim for a minimum of 30 minutes walking a day, and most days that's all I have been doing. But because it's so nice out and we know that rainy, sleety weather is headed our way -- I am pumping it up to 50-60 minutes. The weather is my motivator! Also, I belong to an online wealking club -- and I get a T-shirt at 1 million steps, only about 400,000 more steps to go - soooo, gotta get my t-shirt. Hope you have a great workout at the gym today.

Gee, Lynne, you do GREAT with your walking. I wish I could say that I get in that much walking time. I don't think of myself as completely sedentary, but I keep procrastinating about going to the gym. Don't know why either, because once I get there I love it. Where else can you find a pool (indoors) that feels almost as warm as bath water? lol

Well, Tuesdays and Thursdays are my regular gym days, so at least today I'll get in my time. I need it too, had company for dinner last night and put on a pound I think.

Thanks for the welcome to the team and also for people's comments, always interesting to hear other people's priorities and stories. Hope you are all enjoying a relaxed day of retirement (semi-retirement) -- I am. What a luxury to stay in bed until 8:00am and have so much time to do things -- like get dressed!
Completely different topic -- has anyone else seen the movie Juno yet? I went with a friend last week and really enjoyed it, good acting, snappy dialogue, no violence. It's very light fare though, I am kind of surprised it is getting so much attention. Got 50 minutes of walking in yesterday and it looks like it's going to be another beautiful, sunny -- cold -- day here today -- so I am aiming for 60 minutes today. Other than a yoga class, that's my only exercise these days, but I enjoy it and get to see the local neighbourhoods as I stroll. By the way, my name is Lynne. OK, I will go do the huddle now -- Ciao!

Hello...

It's -1 in old KC this AM. This weekend it's supposed to get into the 50s. What weather!!

Eve: Glad to know your name. It's a little awkward using people's username. BTW, mine is Shirl.

Sparkarino: I moved to KC because most of my family lives in this area. Of course, I moved only 45 miles. I would be completely distraught if I lived 8 hrs from my family and friends. But you have to do what feels right for you.

Where does everyone live? I keep a list of everyone's name and area so when you mention weather or something else that pertains to a location, I have a better idea of what's going on.

Have a good day.

Marlene you have got to be one of the most energetic people I know! Just reading your posts, here and on the other one where I found you -- you make me laugh and I'm amazed at all the stuff you do!

Keep it up and you'll shed those extra pounds you gained in no time flat.

I had a dinner party tonight so I hate the thought of stepping on the scale tomorrow. emoticon

My major goal in SP was to lose weight, look better and be healthy. DH is satisfied with what I have done. I lost 60 pounds but over the holidays, put some back on. I had a hysterectomy in October and after that the holidays and put on 15 pounds. I have dropped 8 of that but seems like I am having a time getting it back off. I guess I will blame it on hormones. emoticon

Welcome Sparkarino! Our little group is growing, and it is so interesting to hear where you all live, and at what age you retired. While some of you may not be 100% retired yet, still it is a wonderful feeling to be able to sleep in when you feel like it, instead of rousing yourself and trying to look presentable for work, is it not?

I was 63 when I retired, and while I missed the action of working at first, and definitely the paycheck, I liked some of the fringe benefits even better.

What's your first name, Sparkarino. So far I know we have Eve (that's me) Judy, Marlene, Susan, and I haven't found out Squirt1933's name yet. It might be there in the messages somewhere, I'll scout it out.

emoticon Hugs and welcome to all of you! Eve

Welcome to our small and growing group. I too retired a year ago and what a transition!!! I'm still getting used to not as much money and all the time in the world to do things and I am still so doggone busy.

My grandchildren (3) live right across the street from me. The 2 oldest ones can stand on their beds and yell "Hi Grandma"! I babysit the youngest one (who is 16 months) in the mornings. I gave up a 80,000 a year job to stay home and get more into my family. The decision is yours to make as far as moving away. My husband could move away because he makes friends easy. I don't. My family are my friends.

Hi everyone, I would like to join your team. I have been retired for almost a year now, and just turned 63 this month. It has been a year of transition for sure and now I feel so much more relaxed and sleep better, too. feel ready to take on the challenge of eating healthier and getting more active, and hopefully losing some 'poundage' into the bargain.

I would like to get more involved in volunteering, too, but have been holding back because i have been considering moving out of the city to a smaller town, where i could afford a better home for myself. i just can't decide if it's worth it to move away -- only about 8 hours away! -- from my family, friends -- and especially my dear little granddaughter. I am having a hard time with this decision. Any thoughts from you wise seniors out there?

Anyway, right now I live in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada - and it is a beautiful, gorgeous sunny day today and although pretty chilly, it's a good walking day, so out I go!

emoticon Ciao for now!

Each moment is an opportunity to make a fresh start.

Good Morning Shirl, and welcome to our team! I'm finally starting to get some action, so we'll start having things happen soon, and having fun!

I don't know if you go to any church on a regular basis, but any church I've ever attended is ALWAYS happy to have volunteers. Office work, and other things. In fact, right now at our local Lutheran church I have been going over two days a week and reading for the blind (recording books on cassette tape to be used by the blind). I love to read and feel I'm doing some good besides. I started it because my sister was legally blind and she loved listening to those books.

Thanks so much for checking us out.

Good Morning...

I just popped over from the over 60 group, too. Marlene and I have both been in it for a long time. It's really active.

I retired almost 10 yrs ago. I took early retirement because I was fairly burned out. I've been a widow for 23 yrs. I have 4 children, 8 grandchildren and one cat. I live in KC, MO and love the Chiefs, Royals and Jayhawks.

I would like to find some volunteer work to do. I belonged to a group that sewed for charities, but after 2 years or so quit that. I really don't like to sew all that much and it became a struggle. I'd prefer to do some sort of office work, but I imagine I'm too out of touch with the new office processes. We'll see. It's a new year.

I would like to lose another 20 lbs at least, but I've been on a plateau for months. In fact I've gained a couple of lbs. I have diabetes so have a slightly different take on diets.

Hope everyone has a good day.
Shirl

Hi Marlene,
Of course you are welcome in our group. I might decide at any time to go back to work if my husband needs me to. If construction gets slow for him, I would definitely go back to work. I do agree it is very common to ease into retirement. What is your major goal in SP - to tone up, lose weight or what?

Marlene -- I'm so happy to have you in our group. It is not unusual to EASE into retirement, and we'll just figure that's what you're doing. I feel honored to have someone with enough spunk and energy at 72, still working, to be in our team.

You are truly a motivator to me. I'll be looking forward to reading your posts.

I am not sure if you will allow me here or not. I am 72 and not retired. I work three days a week as accounts payable manager in a small medical center. I have worked the same place for almost 39 years at various jobs. I keep thinking I will retire as I am quite busy helping DH with his car lot and keeping the books for our farming operation. I also do some secretary work for the church that I attend.
I just came over from the invitation on the over 60 bunch. I will be here if I do retire.

I feel like the big Mama in this group now - I need to lose 35 pounds. Welcome squirt1933 to our fledgling new team. Being retired with weight to lose should be easy - we have all the time in the world now. My metabolism must be slowed down because my weight is coming off soooo slow! I used a picture I took yesterday at the beach as my profile image. I needed a before picture to use when I compare it to an after picture weighing 137 pounds - my goal weight. Looking forward to finding out more about you and how we will all connect and help one another.

Hi Squirt1933 nice to hear from you. I looked to see if you have a SparkPage, but as you don't perhaps you could use the topic "Introduce Yourself Here" and let us know where you're from (that means where you are living NOW, not necessarily where you may be from) and if you've got any problems or hopes just let us know so we can chat with you about it.

20 pounds is not so bad, I'd feel pretty good if I lost that, but I'm aiming for more like 30!

Hi! After searching the teams I didn't see one that fit Seniors who are retired. Come join me and let's get acquainted. Share our particular set of priorities and problems with exercising and losing those extra pounds.
