Yeah, well, we realize we kind of are more-or-less alone in this. I didn't choose to ditch the metric system. No one uses it in my profession, here.

Kilos.

I'm a professional scientist and manage and office of STEM kids (well, 20- and 30-somethings, but they are kids to me).

I always tell new job applicants, who enter the real world through our doors after years of high school and college, "Welcome back to the English system of units. You may park the metric system in the coat closet by the door. It is no place in the real-world American workplace." Pounds. Feet. gallons. We think in terms of gallons per day per foot...

Kilos. Let's see. 2.2 pounds to a kilo, so 75 kilos... No matter. Half is half! Dropping from 150 to 75 of anything is a job well done!

Welcome! It sounds like you could teach us a thing or two about maintenance. Smart to stick around before you gained back more. I am a firm believer that the key is the social aspect of SP that keeps weight loss in check.

Feel free to join us on the discussion boards or create a topic of your own.

All the best as you continue on your journey to better health,

Hi Everyone,
I am an American orthodox grandmother living in Israel (used to be in Bnei Brak, recently moved to Modein area) . I lost about half of my weight some 6-7 years ago (from 150 kilos to 75kilos), and slowly have gained back some. I am working hard to return to 75 kilos.
I am a captain on the Biggest Loser Challenge" team (maintainers and near-maintainer's branch).
I dabble in photography as a hobby (see my Avatar photo)

Another Marylander, here? That would make three of us. Wow.

I might suggest giving a call to The Associated www.associated.org/ouragencies

or to the JCC on Park Heights Avenue www.jcc.org/contact-us

Nu is right about Chabad too. There also are a number of synagogues up and down the Park Heights Avenue corridor. You could call any or just pop in too.

Welcome to SJ! (and how 'bout them O's?)

Welcome to SPJews! The quickest and easiest way to approach your kosher dilemma would be to call your local Chabad. They would be more than happy to assist you.

Best of luck,

Nu

EDIT: I see the Chabad in Towson, per the Web, is open 24 hours. That might work for your schedule. If you google Chabad where you are, there are many centers in MD. Hope this helps.

Hi I am new here and not religious, but in order to get financial assistance my roommate and I had to become kosher and neither of use knows what we are doing, so if any help is here it would be great.

As Boss says, all are welcome, whatever your beliefs. We are a passionate bunch, but we are respectful of one another. And our politics run the gamut, though I suspect mostly centrist or left-leaning (I could be wrong). Jew, or non-Jew all are welcome to share their opinions and have.

Please feel welcome to join in anywhere, or create a topic of your own. Jump in. The water's fine.

Good morning and welcome to SJ to all the newbies. I'm posting in here deliberately to bounce this thread back to the top. We have lots of new people since anyone last posted on this thread.

Certainly our online mishpocheh is not everyone's cup of tea. Though tolerant perhaps to a fault, many of us are candidly outspoken on various matters far transcending diet and weight loss. We are keenly aware of and interested in current events, fiercely proud of and defensive concerning our shared heritage and values, and often are unafraid of sharing our views not unlike at a seder or shabbat dinner. Like at such family dinners, that all in attendance might not share our values usually does not motivate anyone to hold back.

From time to time we here on SJ are visited by Red Balloons (my term for "something here from somewhere else", like in the classic Nena new wave song of the same name). Red Balloons are welcome if they are respectful and do not endeavor to change (in any way) who and what we are. I cannot be any more clear on that last point.

There you have it. So who's new? What brings you by?

Welcome! As the "bad boy" says, we mostly hang out on the discussion threads (lately somewhat inactive). Feel free to start a new one. Connectedness is definitely what keeps us on track. We are an interesting cross-section, and not all are Jews, but all are respectful (at least most of the time).

Feel free to jump in anywhere and have a good time!

Welcome to SP, says the bad kid in the back row of the school bus.

Most of the action occurs here in the general discussion forum, where a handful of threads may be active and operative at any time. We discuss far more then just nutrition, diet and weight loss / maintenance. Sort of like the corner table at the oneg where the slightly healthier food may be.

Have fun!

Hello everyone!

I'm Mirjam, a native New Yorker, but have been living in Israel since 1983 (I made aliya when I was 20). I joined SP last week and hopefully this time I'm on the right track and not about to fall off.

Hi everyone, thank you so much for the warm welcome. I have been on sparkpeople for a long time but obviously it didn't stick. But now I am more dedicated then ever, and I am happy I found this group :) I am Canadian so I am not very educated on the politics down there mostly SNL and the such :). Can't wait to follow the message boards and get to know all of you. Happy Purim to all!

I am so glad you liked Montreal, it really is a great city and I am sure your son had the best Bar MItzvah vacation because he go to be with you guys, and in Montreal doesn't hurt!

Welcome Michele, and Happy Purim from all of us. I'm somewhat of the bad boy in the back row of the school bus, firing spitballs into your hair and ducking behind the seat when you turn around. The others will tell you that I overstate this to some measure, but it is my mantra here and I am proud of it.

NUMD97 has explained much of the ins and outs of this team. We are mostly female; I am among the very very few handicapped by a pesky y-chromosome. As already explained, we represent a diversity of degrees of religious observance, longevity in fighting the battle of the bulge, we get political sometimes (lately a lot as most of are embarrassed Americans these days) , we are prone to discuss most anything and everything of interest to 21st century somewhat secular North American Jews.

Six years ago when our youngest did not want a Bar Mitzvah party, he wanted instead to travel to an exotic locale. It was the depths of the recession and my business was profoundly impacted. We could not afford to leave on a jet plane to go anyplace, so we piled all into a very large and very aging Blue Tahoe with Maryland plates, and headed to your fair city. Doubtlessly the locals still talk about the gigantic SUV with the Maryland plates wending its way through your narrow streets. We loved Montreal!

Are you new to Spark? Can we help you? Many of us have been here for years and have experience to share, worth just what you paid for it. Welcome!

Welcome, Michele! We hang out mostly on the discussion threads. Feel free to jump in anywhere. We are a cross-section of all kinds of Jews, with a scattering of non-Jews as well. We all play pretty nicely in the sandbox, and our topics are not just food related. If you want to start a new thread, feel free.

Again, welcome, and best of luck to you as you continue on your journey to better health,

Welcome, Ryan! We are a most active group, but hang mostly on the discussion boards. Feel free to jump in anywhere. No granting of permission, just dive, wherever it suits you.

We are an amalgam of people, and not all are Jewish, just so you know. Some Christians come out of curiosity, sometimes to ask a question as they are considering conversion, and some just like to hang with Jews.

We run the full spectrum: Orthodox to cultural Jews, some who have made aliyah. All are made to feel welcome whatever their bent. We try to be respectful of all opinions, and thus far it seems to work for us. Boss61 is correct that most of us are female, and most are around your age. There are two active male members that I am aware of.

I just returned from Boston last week. I have family outside of Boston and have quite a few friends that call Boston and its environs their home. The city always leaves me confused when I have to drive in it. I forgot last week that it is built around 17th century cowpaths. Who does that? My favorite is one exit, forget where now, where you take the exit and then the road splits again without a sign in sight. One must presumably flip a coin then......

Please feel welcomed and do join us on the boards and re-introduce yourself there. It's the easiest way if you would like to participate.

All the best as you continue on your journey to better health,

Nu

Welcome Ryan and Happy Chanukah from all of us. I'm somewhat of the bad boy in the back row of the school bus, firing spitballs into your hair and ducking behind the seat when you turn around. The others will tell you that I overstate this to some measure, but it is my mantra here and I am proud of it.

This is not an abandoned thread and moreover, the Team in general seems among the most active. The "action" occurs in the "Team Discussion Forum." Ab out a dozen or two of us are relatively active, 15 or so years either side of your age. All but two of us appear female. We represent a diversity of degrees of religious observance, longevity in fighting the battle of the bulge, we get political sometimes and most of us can be colored a deep shade of indigo blue, we are prone to discuss most anything and everything of interest to 21st century somewhat secular American jews. One of us at least (ECOAGE) hails from the Boston ares as well and I have a daughter at UMass Amherst, known hereabouts as Thing One.

Are you new to Spark? Can we help you? Many of us have been here for years and have experience to share, worth just what you paid for it. Welcome!

Oh and I am most impressed with your Hebrew Skills. My hebrew is akin to my recollection of Jackson Browne lyrics "...say a prayer for The Pretender!..."

hi. it looks like this thread is pretty much abandoned, but i thought i'd introduce myself anyway.

i'm called ryan (not my real name) online. i am a 60 year old mother of three grown boys, happily married for 37 years to the most wonderful man on the planet. i have recently rediscovered my commitment to Judaism, after the loss of my father. going to shul every day to say kaddish helped my Jewish identity grow and blossom. i now am an active member of a conservative synagogue and attend Shabbat services weekly. i have also been known to chant a haftarah or two (or more). i teach hebrew reading for adults and also lead the ma'ariv service on occasion.

i live outside of boston. i was born in raised in the city and never knew that i was a small town girl until my husband brought me to the suburbs! i love it here.

i hope that i can find some activity here, as i am not comfortable jumping into established threads until i have met some members first.

chag same'ach to all. emoticon emoticon

hello all. this isn't really an intro but a reintro. I (like many) was here a while back and have returned (home?) again. I'm a native New Yorker (Brooklyn) who has been living in Israel for almost 32 years. I'm married to Avi, we've got two almost grown daughters (19 and 23). I guess the 23 year old is grown but our 19 year old is in the army so she's still "at home". I teach high school English here in Jerusalem and I need to lose 30kgs. (about 60lbs). and with that said, I'm off to the gym! have a great day.

Wendy

Taking it one day at a time!

Whoa and howdy Gail from Wisconsin. Someone new here.

Heartiest greetings from the bad kids in the back row of the school bus.

The "Sisterhood" (what I call the 97% female membership here) will greet you more officially. Consider this the spitball in the back of your head.

And Wisconsin, huh? Land of gout-inducing cheese? 7 months and change of winter? Misbegotten Milwaukee Brewers fans? Some giant lake-riddled suburb of North Chicago? Have I missed something?

Hahaha listen, if they haven't deported me yet, I don't think they will deport you either. :P

I like to sit in the front of the bus, but that's only because I figured out a trick to not having a stranger sit next to you on a crowded bus- other passengers will generally overlook the first row when looking for a seat, so they don't seem to notice the seat next to me! It works more often than not.

Hello! Sorry it took me a while to reply- I usually just use the app on my phone, but it's not set up for the community aspect of this program very well!

Tel Aviv is a HAVEN for vegans! I lived last year with a vegan (one of many, many roommates, too many roommates), and she loved the vegan scene in Tel Aviv. Jerusalem is certainly up and coming too! Truth be told, I'm a carnivore, or more accurately, my boyfriend is and he would be sad if I didn't cook meat for dinner. Left on my own, I'm happy eating vegetarian most of the time! :P

What do I miss most about the US? Well, that's quite a question! I think I miss most just the convenience of everything. I miss stores like Target and Wal-mart, 24 hour grocery stores (real stores, not just mini marts). Everything seems to take forever here- running errands means going to a million stores to find what you are looking for. Of course, I shop in the shuk for most of my food items, which means walking from vendor to vendor, trying to find what you want for a good price, while trying not to get ripped off! I try to speak as much Hebrew as possible, and I walk with my head up so they don't take me for a tourist immediately.

I also miss Starbucks iced coffee terribly, but Aroma has an iced cappuccino which might be even better because it's made with espresso (and whole milk... it's my big indulgence, because skim just doesn't seem to exist in this country). It helps me get through work every day!

Welcome to SJ, from the czar of the back seat of the school bus where the bad kids sit. I'm a poor candidate for aliyah - Israel would deport me in less than a week. They have enough troubles already.

Good luck here!

Hi there and welcome! Glad you've found us!

Being vegan,I admit to being a bit envious that you've made Aliyah. Every time I turn around I hear another story about more and more Israelis going vegan, openings of new vegan restaurants in Jerusalem, etc.Hope to come visit one day...

What do you miss most about living in the US? Looking forward to getting to know you!

Hi everyone! Let's see, I guess I will tell you all a little bit about myself... I'm 26 years old, from North Carolina, and I'm living in Jerusalem, having made aliyah back in September. I'm not very religious but consider myself traditional, and I'm a Zionist. I love Israel but miss the States terribly so sometimes I battle with homesickness, and having other American friends here in Israel makes everything much easier to deal with. I have a wonderful boyfriend here who is very loving and supportive, although he doesn't really understand the concept of a diet! He's Israeli so he just loves to eat.

I'm currently hoping to lose about 70 pounds, mostly for health reasons. I have a lot of back problems/sciatica problems that I think would be alleviated with weight loss (also, let's be honest, going shopping will be more fun when I'm 70 pounds lighter too).

Tov, that's enough for now. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat! I am looking for more friends! :D

Anyone who totally loves this site ( or team) has not read enough of my postings to be driven away. Truth this, this team has more staying power than most, but losing weight (or maintaining a lower weight) fundamentally is an individual endeavor. Just is.

Hello and welxome, Nina!

It's so great that you're reaching out to Judaism. I was raised in a complete secular environment and really get what it's like to visit a congregation feeling a little shy because I don't know the Hebrew or the Nusach (specific service prayer/melodies.)

Looking forward to hearing more about you and your journey. I'm totally loving this site - and I'm glad you're here!

Welcome Nina. We come in all flavors, shapes and sizes (and degree of familiarity or not).

Do not let my biases and irreverence poison you. Let the synagogue Sisterhood here (I call them that) welcome you properly.

Then, if you dare, you can venture to the back of the online school bus and I'll teach you how to fire proper spitballs, and together we will see whether by bouncing on the seats in unison, vigorously enough, we can get the entire bus to tip over on its side.

At least, that will get the matzo crumbs out of the seat cushions.

I'm a 40-something single mom in the South. I'm new to Judaism. I am an ethnic Jew, but my family didn't practice for years, so I'm starting the tradition back! I attend a Reform Jewish synagogue and enjoy the service. Ah, the Hebrew - I have much to learn.

Snow? I remember snow. It's like rain, only less muddy, right?

Hey, I'm totally hanging out in the back row. I have popcorn. We can throw it.

Nope. No one here at all. Buried in snow. Check back in August, when perhaps power is restored by then.

(someone will explain that I'm the bad kid in the back row of the bus - welcome though!)

Is this thing on?

Joined this jazzy Spark thing last night and trying to feel positive and excited and not overwhelmed and scared.

I'm a tribal Jew, and would be Reconstructionist if it were around. Also very Pagan/Earth-based in my beliefs.

Glad to find this team and glad you're here. Shalom! emoticon

Hi all! Sarah here, back after an absence from Spark for a while. Hoping this time it sticks! I live in Ottawa with my husband and our little pupdog. I am somewhere in between Jewish Renewal and Conservative in terms of my observance. I do use Sparkpeople on Shabbat, but I figure that Hashem wants me to be healthy and happy, so Hashem doesn't mind!

It's not about being better than someone else, it's about being better than you used to be.

Larisa here... again, after a break of about a year. I came back for the usual reasons. Got involved with work, school and other stuff and forgot about exercising. I gradually got pillow-y and look just like I did when I joined Spark in the first place (sigh). If I feel accountable to tracking the exercise, I actually tend to do it.

Hubby and I consider ourselves mildly religious. We celebrate Shabbat at home, but only because there is no shul here! We would have to drive an hour in one direction, two in the other to go to one. We have mezuzot on all our doors, but we generally forget to kiss them on our way in and out, and we almost never read Torah anymore. Not going to Shul makes us not feel accountable.

For a long time I thought I had sung the Shema to the last Jewish woman other than me when she died, but I met another Jewish woman a couple months ago.

Glad I found this group by checking out other people's pages that's usually how. Just wandering across Spark. My dad is Jewish and my mom turned Jewish but was never really Christian. My dad is now a very Orthodox Jew. I was raised reform. I hardly ever go to Synagogue because I don't understand Hebrew and even the reform Synagogue near here does a lot in Hebrew. Not that I mind. So I guess I am just a Jew in spirit more than anything. I do Hanukkah with my daughters and usually Passover too but not this year. I have been trying to read the Torah for years now but it is kind of a joke. I really got into it when I was going through some trouble after I separated from my husband but just can't seem to finish it. I even think I should start over because the long break in reading it I keep taking. My dad gives me books to read too which I have not read. I think I returned some of them. I did read a book a few months ago about Hidden Holocaust children. Children who were forced into pretending they were Christian to stay alive during the Holocaust. Pretty amazing stuff. I found the whole book sad and inspiring at the same time. The Holocaust of course greatly disturbs me. I guess I am done my strange introduction. emoticon

YASMINDURAN, welcome! If you start a discussion thread, I am sure many would answer. I have always found the "Jews By Choice" a fascinating topic personally.

SHARMIC791, you can change the amount of emails that you get in the preferences. I stopped a lot of that as well, a long time ago.

SP works, because of its generous and supportive community. Many in maintenance (not me yet, but hopeful!), are still here, and they attribute this site to their continued success as one of the Five Percenters (those who maintain a sizeable weight loss over years).

Stick around. It'll do your body good!

SilverOpera, this is an active (sometimes overactive, perhaps) thread, but we are mostly on the discussion boards.

To all the newbies, welcome! Please feel to chime in at any time. Our threads create lively discussions, and all points of view are respected. We also have active Gentiles on the boards who take an interest in Jewish-related topics, just so you are aware.

So, fasten your seatbelts, it gets bumpy at times! emoticon

Hey y'all! I'm Sharon. I live in Virginia Beach, and am happily married to a Lutheran. We like to say we're equal opportunity celebrants: we celebrate everything! I was brought up very Reform, and am still that way. I'm not very religious or observant, but we do celebrate the Jewish holidays of Passover and Chanukah. I have been on Spark before, but got tired of being inundated with emails and having to spend so much time on the computer so I left. But I gained back the weight I lost while we were stationed in London (we're retired Navy), plus some, so here I go again! Good luck to all!

Tomorrow is another day.

I'm not sure if this is still an active thread, but I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jen and I live in NYC. I'm currently in grad school studying to be a reform cantor. I have a pulpit in Queens that keeps me pretty busy, and I'm currently working to shed some weight while keeping all sorts of other balls in the air. I'm down about 45 lbs so far, thanks in part to an ulcer, but in large part to a major change in my eating habits. I love to cook.

Happy Chanukah (a few days early)!

Hello! I'm gonna start by saying that it's nice to see a Jewish presence on SP. When I joined last week, I was swarmed by all sorts of people, many of them sending me kind messages about how Christ was with me on my journey.
Anyway, I'm Jenni, 32 and live in MN with my husband, dog Millie and 2 cats, Luca and Rikki.
By day I work for a non-profit as a case manager and job coach for adults with disabilities.
I am also in a band (we play at weddings and B'not Mitzvahs). I love to sing and help lead services at my Shul.
I'm pretty laid back and outgoing. If you would like to friend me on here, please do!

Hi! Boss61 clued me in to this group, so here I am -- I'm working hard to reach my SP goal before my son's wedding in May. Wish me luck! My grandparents were either born in Eastern Europe or en route to the US. I'm a native San Franciscan, although I grew up in the Bay Area. I've happily lived in California for my entire life, and always within 3 hours of San Francisco.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you just might find that you get what you need. -- Stones, claro

Wow, I've been on SparkPeople for three years and I never knew there were SparkJews! I'm Kate, live in Ohio now but was raised in the Washington DC suburbs. My parents were from New York and my grandparents from Poland and Lithuania. My current Sparkfriends are all Catholics or other Christians, and some are pretty religious, but mostly they've been great, sending me menorah icons and such. Still, I get tired of being the odd one out. And that goes for rural Ohio too!

If this was easy I would have done it already.

Hi, I'm a re-sparker here. I'm Steph, I'm 25 and in Columbia, MO. I joined this to remotivate myself to stay on track with my goals. Also joined this team so I could start reconnecting with Judaism since I've been very lapse with my observance and the presence it has in my life (I know it's not that way for everyone but it's very important to me). Good to be back. =)

Hi, I'm brand new here, but looking forward to meeting my goals, and some new friends too! I have about 65 lbs to lose, but I'm already down 30 from where I was a year and a half ago. I want to accelerate my weight loss and be consistently on track with my eating and exercise. Looking forward to the journey and all I will lose (and gain) from the experience.

Just joined Sparkpeople last Monday at the urging of my older sister who has been here for awhile. In preparing for Passover, I thought to myself: "I wonder if there is a spark team for Jewish people" Sure enough, there is.

So to introduce myself, I am a Reform Jew by choice in Lincoln Nebraska. In Lincoln, there are two congregations, the Reform and the Conservative. Our religious school is combined because the Jewish community here is quite small.

Feel free to visit my page and make any comments.

hi everyone. my name is kate. i'm ethnically jewish (mom is jewish) but because my family is very german, the religion wasn't passed down to my generation. so i was raised christian. i loved it and i still retain a lot of the beliefs, but i'm looking into my jewish roots and trying to learn more about the faith. i've been observing holidays for two years now, but i haven't found a synagogue to call my own yet. i think i find one and then something turns me off. i've been to conservative and reform synagogues, and even two messianic (as per recommendations from pastors) ones. i kind of enjoyed the messianic synagogues but i was really upset by the beliefs they tied in from christianity. i thought they could do a better job. i didn't particularly like my experiences in reform synagogues but i did like one conservative one. it's just way too far from where i live.

okay, enough of all of that boring stuff. i'm glad that i found this group and i wish you all the best of luck in your journeys!

Good morning all! As you can probably guess from my Screen Name I am originally from South Africa (Port Elizabeth). Lived in Israel (Jerusalem, Kibbutz Tzora & Hod Hasharon) and London (Hendon & Borehamwood) before settling in Florida emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I grew up in a typical South African Jewish family, Jewish Day School, Jewish Youth Movement and Modern Orthodox Services. I have been to both extremes (very frum and totally secular) and am now happily in the middle.

Down 20lbs already and working on getting rid of 75 more. So happy to find a Jewish thread!

Hi, I'm Caren. I'm a 52 year old graphic designer, reform Jewish mom to 3 boys, 14, 20 & 25. I grew up conservative in South Jersey, with orthodox extended family. I'm reform now, but comfortable davening anywhere. I live in Illinois, but hope to move back east real soon. Anyone else in Illinois?

Hello, my name is Maida and I am from Montreal, Quebec as you may have guessed from my sparkname. Any other Montreal or Canadian Jews out there. I am a traditional Jew and celebrate the holidays all year round. I am just getting ready for Hanukkah and have my menorah and candles ready for tomorrow night. I am going to a party on Sunday afternoon/evening at the YMHA. Next Saturday I have two hanukkah parties. One is at my sister's place for which I will be baking a noodle kugel and the other one is at my friend's who is celebrating his 60th birthday as well. I will try not too eat too much latkas. LOL.

This month with Hanukkah and Christmas I will do my best to be careful during the holidays and will also do my best to eat well during the week. I am planning to go to the gym more than ever since my workout coach wants to see my fitness improve when we meet again in the new year. Let's all have a healthy December.

Have a nice shabbos this evening and a Happy Hanukkah to you all.

Hi and welcome. It was interesting to me to read your post. Having weight loss surgery at 256 lbs and down to 161. was the way I lost it. But I exercised and did all the right things and that is how I really lost it.

When I see how much you weight it makes me think that you are a small sized gal. and many of my friends wished that they could weigh what you weigh now. So it shows how everything is relative. lol... I am from usa. Brooklyn NY. And you asked for suggestion on how to control yourself... My suggestion is to just do it. And you can....We are very strong people us women.. I would also watch my carbs and try to say bye bye to bread... You can do it...We are all here for you...I am especially since, I love to help people with their weight loss and have succeeded. emoticon emoticon

hi all! just wanted to introduce myself. soo happy i found a Jewish team!
I live in Jerusalem and love every second of it! The only drawback is that the food here is unbelievably delicious! and most of it is pastries and yummy carby things..
I have about 30 lbs to lose, and this is the most challenging thing for me at the moment! i seem to do OKAY during the week (despite the fact that I live with 5 girls who are constantly indulging in whatever they want) but when Shabbat comes around, I just lose all control. does anyone have any suggestions for me? i'd really appreciate it!
Thanks!

Hello everyone,
I am in the process of converting to Conservative Judaism. I've been on Sparkpeople for a few years. I'm active on Sparkpeople for a while and then I lose my motivation and stop. Over and over again. Hopefully this time I'll stick to it.

Hello! I have been on and off Sparkpeople for some time and have just discovered this group.

I live in Italy and hopefully this time I'll manage to shed some weight! Although this coming Saturday is my birthday and everybody seems to want to feed me in order to celebrate, and on the following Sunday I'll be flying to NJ for Thanksgiving with my cousins and then comes Hanukkah.......oh my dear!!!!!

Hi, I'm not sure if I ever introduced myself. I joined a while back, but then life kinda got in the way and I keep drifting away from Spark. I am glad to see other Jews here on Spark though. I'm Yakira and I live in Tupelo, MS.

Hello, I'm Aylamay on the posts. I bought the book "The Spark" a couple of months ago. It seemed intriguing so I decided to check out the website. I have been on the site a week, and I am still learning my way around. I live near Chicago. I noticed their are a huge number of christian groups on this site so I decided to check and see if there were any Jewish groups. Lo and Behold--I found you! This is a good thing. A little about me-- I am reform, my temple is Congregation Etz Chaim in Lombard, Illinois. I missed the High Holy Days at the Synagogue because one of my difficulties is that I have agoraphobia-fear of leaving the house. I am working on it, but it remains a challenge for me. I am not even sure how it developed. I just know that I haven't really left the house for over a year except to go to the doctor, and then I get a ride. I hope to make a few friends while I lose weight and get in shape. I have already lost six pounds this first week. I have plenty of exercise videos to work with, but ideally I would like to be out of the house walking and even running or biking before the Chicago winter sets in. Margie

Shana tova! I'm Valerie from NY, quickly approaching my 30s, and I've been on and off sparkpeople for a while, successfully beginning to lose weight only to slip on ice and injure my knee and become bed bound for a month. I've regained almost all that I lost, both while I recuperate from the injury and as my graduate program became more intense. Although my injury is still bothering me it's time to get back on track and this time make my weight loss journey a successful one. Joining a local gym (run by a Jewish center) on Wednesday when they re-open. Looking to provide and receive support. If someone is looking for a fitness buddy, I'd welcome that! Here's to a wonderful new year!

Hi All,

So happy to have found this team. My name is Gwen, I live in the NY metro area. I love Spark and have Spark friends from all over the world. Now it is also nice to connect with some of my "peeps" as we say here in NY.
I am a very proud Jew, a staunch Zionist with a daughter whose father is from Israel. We divorced years ago but my love for Israel only grew. My daughter goes regularly and is planning to try to work their after graduating in May. I recently remarried a wonderful man after many years together. He is not Jewish but he should be...LOL...he comes to shul with me more than my ex husband ever did.
Preparing for the holidays and really staying on track knowing that the holidays are rough. Looking forward to having my daughter home from college.
Happy and Healthy New Year to all and looking forward to making some nice connections from this new team:)

My name is bikingtolean, I actually bought an exercise bike 2 years ago and it is collecting dust...I have always been overweight and even when I wasn't I thought I was because everyone around me is model size o_O

I am a Jew which means I believe in the Torah that was given to the Jewish people at mount sinai, I believe it is binding and true! I am a mother which makes me a jewish mother, aaaagh! the stereotypes!
I DO NOT make gefilte fish, matzo ball soup not borsht, I make sefardi fish, couscous and meatballs ;-)
I live in the beautiful land of Israel with my husband who is a student in a kollel ( a grad school for Torah studies) and my toddler munchkin,

If you ever come to Israel would you come for shabbat sometimes? I am not joking!
