I definitely agree with the previous posts. Just a couple of additions. Get there early so you can warm up, make sure that you have some safety pins as they don't always have them available to put on your bib, if you're used to running with music, check to see if it's allowed and don't be afraid to walk if you need for some of it. The first race will light you up a little as you're going into the unknown but just try to relax as much as possible. You'll have your very first personal best and you'll meet a great bunch of new friends with the same hobby in common.

I would agree on nothing new. Two miles into a race is not the time to decide that your shirt doesn't fit right and your arms are chafing and your pants keep falling down and now you have blisters on your heels from your new shoes. Makes for a miserable time. Also don't do anything new with your meals or drinks. If you don't usually drink in the middle of a run, don't, If you only drink water then at the hydration station half way through don't drink the sports drink they have for you. You don't want to risk getting an upset stomach. It's not uncommon after pushing yourself really hard to have a sudden urge to have a bowl movement. You don't want to change your normal to make that happen.
I always eat my normal. But I do run a lot better on a nearly empty stomach. Eat a couple hours before your run so it has time to digest and you can get energy from it.

Last but not least, have fun. Don't get cought up in how fast you are going or how the person next to you is doing. First 5k, just finish it. It will be alot different than running on the treadmill. Rest the day before.

Enjoy, it's kind of addictive:)

Congratulations on reaching the eve of your first race. You will remember it the rest of your life. Therefore, above all else, be sure to take it all in and enjoy the experience.

The best advice I can give is to avoid anything new. Race day is not the time to break in new clothes or shoes, nor is it time to experiment with what you eat. Eat something light a couple of hours before the race. I also like to have something small (like a banana or half a bagel) about 15 to 20 minutes before the race.

The second best piece of advice is to be careful not to start too fast. You will be excited to be in a race and it is real easy to get caught up in the pace of the leaders early on. If you're not careful, you can flame out early on. Just run your own pace. Your goal for the first race should simply be to finish and enjoy the entire event. Afterall, you've earned it! Now go rock that race!

Hello group,

I am new to this team and will be doing my first 5K on October 2nd, 2010! What is the best advice you can give something running their first 5K? Anywhere from clothing, to what to eat before and after to pace and how to breath. I have been running (mostly on the treadmill) and I am definitely ready for a 5K but I want to make sure it takes off without a hitch - thanks!
