Hi everyone. My name is Lisa Mostert. I found this site looking soecifically for calories burned during an hour of dressage training. I am a level 3 dressage judge soon to upgrade to level 4. My horse Nevada and I are currently competing Elementary. We school for an hour everyday and I read that one of the team members lost 450 calories riding dressage for an hour. Wow thats awesome.

New to the group.
I have been involved in horses for the bast 20+ years. I started at about 13yrs old and my first horse was a Saddlebred mare. Second horse was QH mare. I dabble in dressage, love riding bareback, and enjoy trail riding. I have been leasing horses on and off for the past few years and take lessons.
I am a self-employed chiropractor and also adjust horses, dogs, and cats. Prior to becoming a chiropractor, I formulated horse feed and sold horse feed for a cooperative and also became a certified as a barefoot farrier. I still trim hooves a little as a adjunct to the animal chiropractic because I enjoy the work.

Greetings! My name is Jennifer (Jenn) and I am re starting my Spark People life today. I did SP a couple years ago and lost about 30 pounds and have kept it off with the exception of a few "winter pounds". I'm back in hopes of losing another 30-40 pounds before next spring. I own 2 quarter horses and enjoy showing my homebred mare at AQHA events. I have a six year old daughter and a fiance that works in the coal mines of WVa. Anybody that wants to be-friend me feel free to do so. We all need support in our journey :)

Hi, my name is Tami and I am new to this team. I currently have a 19 yr old red roan QH mare (Lacey) and a 16 yr old red dun paint gelding (Ransom). I've had the mare for 16 years and the gelding for almost nine months. The gelding was bought for my husband but the horses are really "mine" :) We currently trail ride and just hang out together. We recently moved to Delaware and I unfortunately have to board them, but the long term goal is to get property and bring them home. Any other Delawarians out there looking for a riding buddy?!?!

Happy trails everyone!

Hi, my name is Christina I love any animal but horses have always been a favourite of mine. I am 50 years and when I was about 16 I owned a horse that got spooked by a motorbike needless to say, he reared up and I went under him causing him to trample over my legs I had 15 stitches in my left leg and broke my foot. I was never able to again ride a horse I lost my nerve, something I have regretted all my life. It was not his fault, but I just could not get back on him, I had to sell him, he went to a farm and I never saw him again. I can go and pat a horse but have never ridden on since. Anyway that is my story about my experience as a horse owner his name was Statesman and I will never forget him, he was dark brown, and had a star in his forehead a lot like Black Beauty, he also had white stockings on his front feet.

Cheers
Christina

Hi there! I'm Roxane and I resumed riding (as an adult) in early December 2010. I set three equine goals for myself for 2011 and I'm pleased to say that I've achieved 2 of them already:

* Quarter-boarding
* 4 consecutive lessons without hearing "Heels down!" barked at me *lol*

The remaining goal is to be jumping by year end, however if I stay on the current horse I'm riding, I will not achieve that goal. It may be time to leave my darling Iris (too old to jump) and start on a school horse that is capable of jumping.

I have also achieved a stretch goal (one that I had for 2012). I entered my first competition this summer, and while I beat the 8 year olds, I lost to a 6 year old. He had the "cute factor" going in his favour! *lol*

The barn is my life for 2 days a week and I run 3 days a week. Two days are my 'off' days, although I usually spend them walking or hiking with the dog.

My name is Jenna and I'm new to Sparkpeople. I'm hoping to lose 15-20 pounds and to build some muscle before the winter snow hits here in the snowbelt of NE Ohio. As a mail carrier with a 7 mile walking route, my job is hard enough without carrying the extra weight on my body and at 43 years old, I've already lost plenty of muscle. It's time to make life a little easier for myself and to care enough to lose the weight and get in better shape. I have ridden since I was 11 years old, mostly English. I grew up on OTTB's...retraining them and competing in the hunter ring. I switched to eventing about 12 years ago and haven't looked back. I also switched from owning TB's to draft crosses. My main riding mare is a gray 12 y.o. Percheron/TB/QH cross named Tiara and she's my once in a lifetime horse. She's the first horse I ever saddle broke and we've done everything together.....Parelli, halter, trailriding, open pleasure, hunters, jumpers, eventing, dressage, driving, contesting, team sorting and penning, mounted police work, drill team, honor guard, cowboy obstacles and lots of volunteer work doing performances and demonstrations for the public. She's an amazing mare and has taught me soooo much! She was diagnosed with moon blindness and heaves 5 years ago and that's what spurred me to experience as much as I could with her while I could. She's doing pretty well now, only has an occasional flare up of her eyes and her heaves are still only exercise induced at this point. She has good days and bad days with her breathing, so I tailor her exercise for how she's breathing on any particular day. After taking several years off of eventing, we are back at it again at a very low level since that is all that her lungs will allow. But it's what we enjoy the most together and we're going to play on those lil' cross country courses as long as her lungs will allow. My other horse is actually a 6 y.o., 14 hh bay draft pony (Haflinger/Friesian) named Jewel aka "tasmanian pony." I call her my "anti-Tia" because she's everything that Tia is not. LOL! She's a spoiled little brat of a pony who is LOADED with talent but she absolutely refuses to let me put her talents to good use. She has this incredible, lofty, ground covering trot that most big horses have to canter to keep up with on the trails and she's an adorable jumper. She grew up on the trails and that's pretty much all that she's comfortable doing. Every year, I try to get some ring training on her and every year we have a massive fight about it and I end up hurt on the ground. LOL! She improves in bits and pieces, so I'll keep at it in bits and pieces, but she's really happiest on the trail and I'm fine with that. I've ponied my Tia off of her during the hot months of Summer when Tia's heaves make it difficult for her to be ridden and that works out great. She also carries my 6'1", 170 lb beginner rider boyfriend along with ease and they have a lot of fun on the trails together. So, if trailriding is all that she's ever able to do sanely, I'm fine with that.

You are certainly an inspiration! I do hope you'll get back in the saddle soon. I know riding is my therapy (mental, physical, emotional and spiritual).
Good luck!

Hey guys,

I'm Gale and I am a retired (like we ever retire) barrel racer who is slowly climbing back into the ring after having 3 kids. I'm training my quarter horse this spring so I can race again next year. (Now if I can make half of me disappear so my poor horse doesn't have to tote it around.....) emoticon

I love to see all these horse teams and horse folks! It's encouraging!

I'm 42, work full time and have 7 horses including a 5yr old stallion that I'm bringing along.

I've shown hunter, western pleasure, halter, barrel racing. This last year I started Ranch & some cow work and I'm hoping to do more of that this coming year. Also hoping to get 2 of ours started on barrels this year as well --thus my winding up here! LOL.

I need to lose 50 pounds to be competitive with my horses in barrels. I'm finding out more and more I'm an emotional eater and I need all the motivatation and help I can get!

Hi Horse Lovers,
What a great site to find!! I'm 70 & still love horses......have 4 in the barn & 1 leased out. They're barrel racers.. my barrel racing days r over, but my daughter & granddaughter still do it, so I'm still close to the action. Had a bad accident in '84 & in a wheelchair for 8 months, they dr's didn't think I would walk, but I did. once back on my feet I made a final barrel run at a competition, got off & said I did it & now I have to stop, couldn't & still can take the chance of injuring that leg again, after 6 plates & 27 screws in it I thought I best be good. Although I can still help exercise the horses. Will love them to the day I die.......now I'm recovering for a heart attack & plan to be back in the saddle again someday. Even if it is just exercising them, u never forget that feeling of being back in the saddle... emoticon ......

Hi, all :) My name's Amanda and I just joined Sparkpeople. I have two horses, Irish and Kore. Irish is a 21-year-old, TB who's enjoying the life of retirement. My Mom trail rides him but other than that he enjoys hanging out in the pasture and eating carrots. Kore is a 13-year-old, Westphalian. We showed in hunters for 6 years and just switched to dressage. He used to show dressage and has some awesome bloodlines for dressage. He has quite the talent so I'm excited to start showing him this season :)

Hi, Horse Lovers! I am so glad to find this team. I live in Colorado with 4 horses (rescues) and two donkeys. I just started Spark yesterday for 3 reasons: to regain my health, my energy, and be able to ride my horses in balance once again. I have ridden off and on for most of my life (Western), and have always loved the feeling of being in harmony with my horse. Unfortunately, that is not happening for me now. I think part of it is my age (I'm 54) and part of it is I'm 50 pounds overweight. I have a lovely Tennessee Walker (hello gaited horse folks!) whose name is Mojo. I love him dearly, but he is 17hh. I can no longer mount w/out a 3-step mounting block, and when I'm in the saddle I feel like I'm off center and completely unbalanced. I have developed a fear of falling now (I have osteoporosis in my old age) and am afraid of broken bones. It's a long fall from a 17 hand horse! I know it's up to me to lose the 50 pds. and work on flexibility. Right now we're just doing ground work; we walked a 1/2 mile together yesterday on my first Spark day and I lunged him just a little. I know it's not much, but it was a start.

Thanks for listening to my ramblings! Gaile (ranchodenali54)

Hi everyone, So glad to have found fellow horse people.
I am very new to SparkPeople and am just getting the hang of how the site works. Not too hard really but it seems I keep finding new things each day.

I grew up a city kid who moved to the country while I was still young and made some great friends who had horses. I fell in love and made a pest of myself as much as possible lol. Never had any formal training in riding just the 'fall off and get back on' school. Spending as many weekends as possible and a lot of summer vacation at my friends house.

Was without horses in my life for 28yrs (I'm 51) but always longed to have my own horse. Finally in June of 2008 my chance came- I found Zahra- the love of my life (horsey-wise that is). She is a registered Egyptian Arabian with beautiful conformation and a sweet disposition.

While I ride her on trails and I am learning through books and videos how to be a better rider I recognize the my weight and lack of flexibility is working against me (and my horse). So here I am making the needed improvements.

Also my daughter has a horse/pony - so we ride together. LOVE IT!

Margaret

Hi fellow Horse Lovers - My name is Sarah and I have been involved with and riding horses for over 35 years. Over the years I I once owned horses and actually lived on a small hobby farm where we bred hunters outside Ottawa Ontario. I spent my younger years riding in the Hunter rings and dabbled in eventing and dressage.

I took a 15 year hiatus due to school, moving away and kids but found myself back in the saddle again when my youngest turned 6.
I am happy and proud to say that I have been riding regularly for over 11 years with the Toronto Mounted Police Unit as a volunteer. I get the chance to ride 2 to 3 times a week and I am fortunate to ride any one of the 20 horses that need to be exercised. The only down is that we are restricted to riding in and indoor facility because I am a civilian and there is an insurance issue with the department. The horses on the unit are Commercial Breed - a mix of draft and warm blood varying from 15.2 hands to a whopping 17.3. I wish I had my own horse again but the expense and travel time is crazy in Toronto.

This is great to have a place to talk and converse with fellow riders.
My goal is to lose 20 pounds and strengthen my core and upper body - the lower half doesn't seem to be as much trouble.

Hi, I've been searching the internet for weeks looking for some easy to follow exercise videos. I wanted to direct my riders to them so they can go through a short warm up prior to training in the saddle. That's how I found this site.

Very soon I am launching Aspire Equestrian Riding Academy and I am definitely going to share the content of SparkPeople on the Academy's website.
Weight and lack of physical fitness is a major problem in horse riding - I am starting the Academy to combine fitness/nutrition and sports scpecific training. I hope to learn a lot from this site.

I am looking forward to test drive it myself now and hope to meet some fitness & horses minded people on here :)

Thank you for reading and if anyone wants to join Academy's facebook Page to support us please do:

Hi! I'm Valerie. I'm 28 and am finally taking riding lessons after all these years! I just started in October. I don't have a horse of my own yet, but I'm riding a 14 year old Arabian named Cricket in my lessons. I think that I am mostly interested in dressage, but we'll just have to wait and see if it sticks or I fing some other discipline that I like better. :)

Hi. My name is Karrie and I hope that this is the way to lose weight. I can't seem to do it. I gain and I'm unhappy with the fact that I can't lose and everyone else makes it seem so easy. I'm glad to be a part of a team that from what I understand will help me along the way. emoticon

Just joined this morning, and am trying to find my way around the site. Does a 40-something forum work? Heck, no - I want my horses! LOL. I am currently owned by four very diverse animals, two of which I wonder why I still have.... I very successfully lost weight last year due to needing to start my youngest. Who promptly injured himself, and had an 8-month layoff. Hum. May be able to use that as additional motivation this time around. I'm fighting asthma right now, and am trying to get the balance where I can actually breathe AND exercise. I will choose my round pen over my elliptical every time. I will trail ride before doing crunches. There's this white stuff on the ground right now that is preventing either of those from happening. So, it's time to move into Cold Weather Mode. :) Glad to be here.

Hi, I've been on sparkpeople before, but it was a long time ago and since then I've fell back into some old habits. I have 3 beautiful horses..a 12 year old Paint gelding, a 16 year old 1/2 Paint 1/2 Quarter mare, and a 2 year old Quarter Horse. They are my inspiration for this weight loss as I want to break my 2 year old in the spring, but at my current weight I'd put too much stress on his back. Hope everyone is having a good weekend and I'm so excited to be part of this group!

Well,I have been with SP for over two months now. I have two horses Monday a 17.2hh Irish thoroughbred and Franz a 15 hh Arab. Both sadly on loan at present due to ill health.

Oh my - I see I have been away for a while!

Jackds - I'm glad you popped back in! We are here for you and please don't feel bad about posting. SP has a GREAT support system I have found. **HUGS** to you.

JIB - Welcome to the group and congrats on being a new horse owner. I've had horses since I was 8 years old, and even though I have had horses my whole life I know how exciting it is to get a new horse. :-) Have fun with him and ask away if you have any questions.

oh Jackds I'm so sorry you've had such hard times lately. I hope things are looking up again!

I'm new to this group but not to sparkpeople, though I have been away from it for quite a while.

Last month I got my very first horse (I'm 30) so this is a lifelong dream finally made true! He's a 14 year old TB copper-penny chestnut named Mikey.

Haven't been doing as much riding as I'd like because it has been raining SO MUCH. it rained all day and we are currently under a flood watch! but the sun should shine this week so I should be back in the saddle!

I'm a teacher and this year started out really stressfully. I turned to unhealthy food & way too many sweets and now have gained weight since last month. gotta get back on the right track!!

Howdy all, I've been on Sparks for a while but the last 10 months have been crazy. In short, I got divorced, gave away 2 horses, put my dog down(cancer), and now I'm trying to finish some college. My L3 disc is now herniated and they want to do another operation. The pain has really slowed me down and I could use some support and motivation. I don't want to bring you down, I want to be involved. I hope all are well.

Hi, My name is Melissa and I love horses. I currently own 5 (2 are for sale). I have 2 QH, a warmblood, a paint and an app. I have put on a lot of weight during the past few years and I really want to get the weight off and get back into shape so I can enjoy my horses more. Currently I am getting my older horse (and myself) in shape for a trail ride the first weekend in October. I also want to start my warmblood under saddle and I have a yearling who was given to me after falling over backward and breaking his neck, causing "wobbler syndrome." As you see, I have many reasons to work on getting fit!

Hi! New to this group, but have been with Spark for 3+ years. I live in rural Alberta, about 45 mins out of Edmonton, on 53 acres with my 4 horses and 5 donkeys. Oh and a husband (long suffering), 2 dogs and 8 cats. Haven't ridden for several years as we have still to complete our riding arena. Terrified of trail riding, so won't do it as my horse knows my fear. Looking forward to meeting all of you!

Hi yall! I just joined this group and am hoping to stick with SP after taking an unintentional summer break from it.

Well I'm from Kentucky, the horse capital of the world! I just started really riding this spring/summer. (In the past I would say I had ridden before, but I've definitely realized there's a huge difference between "riding" and "sitting on a moving horse") I really enjoy it but I definitely want to get better b/c I think I'll enjoy it even more then. I've ridden both Western and English. In the beginning I only rode Western b/c that's all I was used to, but since trying English, that's usually all I ride. So I've only been riding for a few months, but I really think I've improved a lot in such a short time. I look forward to learning even more!! (although it will be at a slower pace since I'll soon be moving back to college which is in a city)
