Welcome to the team lee. I have been diabetic for 25 years now and I have been in your frame of mind.I have a lot of those wonderful complications setting in so I try to set healthy goals for myself instead of getting down on my disease.Look towards the future and what you can do to help yourself and try not to stay in a negative frame of mind, but dont get me wrong, every once in a while a private pity party can be cathartic too LOL!!! emoticon

Welcome!
Diabetes is certainly not easy, but it can be manageable. I think one of the most important things is to find a doctor who works WITH you to make sure you are doing what you need to do to stay healthy without expecting you to be perfect. I skipped that part for the first 17 years, I've only had a good doctor for the last 18 months but I can't even tell you how much difference it makes, its well worth the annoyance of "doctor shopping" to find one that actually helps you!
Much like learning to be healthier a little a time, diabetes is almost something you need to work into. Definitely you should take meds and check your BG a bunch, but it does take time to figure out the kinks and idiosyncrasies of your own body and how to best react to them. Be patient with yourself but keep moving forward- do research, ask questions, visit nutritionists, endocrinologists, be wary of "cures" but stay open to new treatment ideas and be your own best advocate, after all, it is YOUR body.
Its a lot to deal with, but you're not alone! I think between all the members on the team we've pretty much experienced everything- highs, lows, broken pumps, bad insulin, crabby doctors, micro-managing but well-meaning family members- if you have a question about anything please don't hesitate to ask, we're here for you!

Welcome to the team! Having a strong support system (friends, family, doctors, and peoplewho know exactly where you've been in your health journey) is the best way to find a good balance and learn what works for you. There are always highs and lows, physical and emotionally, but knowing there are people who have your back really makes it so much easier to deal with. This is a great group of people so if you ever need anything, someone is always able to help.

When the going gets tough, the tough make lemonade!

Welcome, and that's right! Happy Saint Patrick's Day!!! I know it is so overwhelming at first, but hang in there! Once you get the basics down, and find a good health care team to fine tune your care, you will start to feel a lot better. This is a wonderful supportive team! We will help you with whatever challenges you face. Best of luck to you! emoticon

Welcome to the team!! I am Carey one of the team leaders and I think you will find many great tips and ways to help you control the disease with a little more ease. My way is always exercise about 45 mins a day it lowers your blood sugar without insulin and also helps aid in a healthy heart and lowers colesterol. another thing is as you lose the weight you will find that your body will require less insulin so be sure to ask your doctor about your exercise and weightloss plan as your doctor will work you as to how to do it healthy. I have few complications from this disease and although I do get sick easy ( many hospital stays in my life ) it is not due to the diabetes but instead due to autoimmune disorders and low immune system. remember to lose the weight at a decent rate for me that is about a lb a week or two depending on what I do. I use the 3500 rule which is 1 lb is equal to 3500 cals so I eat 500 less cals a day and that equals out to 3500 a week which works for me and my doctor. do not skip on nurtrients there are many great low cal low fat recipes out there for diabetics that have great amounts of the foods and vitamins you need without skimping on taste or shooting your BG through the roof. personally I love squash speggetti instead of processed noodles it calls for squash noodles which are way healthier and great tasting and the sauce is made with many a veggies and flavoring. I hope this helps you a bit in your journey to a healither you. Good luck on your way as well!! ohh and welcome to the team.
God Bless,
Carey

P.S Happy ST patricks day!! emoticon

Hello,

It is late here, but I wanted to say hello. I am new to the group and new to Diabetes (type 1). I was diagnosed Thanksgiving Day, 2008. Life has been miserable; but I understand that it could have been worse. I am tired of feeding into the illness and ready to make a change.

Any suggestions would be welcomed! emoticon
