Glad to hear you have joined Spark People and our Erie Sparkers message boards ... we hope you find some good friends with similar goals as you. Look over some of our topics and try to reply to some of them. Spark People seems to have something for everyone. I like being able to track my food, water, and exercise ... it helps keep me on track. There are good articles, exercise videos, and plenty of health information.

We have been sort of trying to start a little walking group ... of course not everyone is available at the same time so having a few groups might be a better option.

I hope you will share your successes and failures and maybe we can all help keep each other motivated.

Good luck to you ... and once again ... emoticon

Hi! My name is Ebony and this is my VERY first day here at sparkpeople. I have lived in Erie for three years now, I am in the process of divorce after 9 hard years of marriage. I have three children: 13, 8, and 7. My youngest has autism and it has been very challenging.

In the midst of getting a divorce, I have been able to learn about the real me and I learned that I don't have to hide behind food! I still LOVE food, but I have learned to eat in moderation and not gorge. I used to not eat at all until 1 or 2pm EVERY day and NEVER drink water. Then I'd overcompensate for not eating all day by eating 5 times as much as a normal serving and eating as late as 11pm or midnight!

Needless to say, I've stopped those things and I drink lots of water now, so I've managed to "shrink" my stomach. I can recognize when I am full now and I have added walking to my daily routine. With those basic changes, I've managed to lose 11 lbs!!!

I want to lose weight so that I can be here to see my children's children. I don't have any current health issues, even though my doctor says my sugar level is slightly elevated and I'm at risk for heart disease so I believe losing weight can turn those things around before they even happen!

I inspire myself although its hard and I get lazy sometimes, but then I look at how my clothes fit and I get motivated again. I think if I didnt have the initial weight loss, I wouldn't be motivated to lose more. Now, I'm trying to get into something else in order to encourage more weight loss. Something beyond walking until I can work my way up to intense cardio.

Hi Carra,

I'm glad you decided to join us ... this is a great place to be. I know what you mean about not getting support from Hubby ... mine means well, but he really doesn't have a clue about how to help (not hurt) my weight loss and healthy eating. I guess I finally decided that I really don't care what he thinks ... I need to do this for me and my health ... and my kids ... and hopefully someday it will be for my grandkids (none yet) too!

Are you talking about The community park right before you get to McKean ... if so we've had family reunions there and I think it is a great park. I might join your Mom sometime she comes out to walk with you!

As for the ice cream emoticon ... I know what you mean. I am struggling not to eat up all the Ice cream we brought back from Penn State when we were there for our Garden Club convention. The first 1/2 gallon is gone ... but I'm really avoiding the second. I have fit it into my daily plan on occasion ... but for the most part it's off limits.

Hi Lynn! I am Carra (Joy's daughter). I am married with a 14 year old daughter and a 4 year old son. I am a Logistics Specialist at a local distribution center and I have been at my current job for four years.

I have been with Spark for three whole days. Can't say I have lost much yet, but I am finding this site a valuable tool for my self-esteem. It is so nice to meet people that feel like I feel!

I have what I think are three major hurdles in my life. The first is my job. I feel on some days that I am chained to my desk. I recently got a pedometer, and now I see how sedentary I really am.

The second in my husband. He is a big man, but he loses weight easily when he decides he wants to. He is not supportive of me when I try, so I often find myself giving up. Why should I care if nobody else does?

And the last and probably the hardest...ICE CREAM. I love ice cream. And if you have driven around town lately, I am sure that you have noticed that all the local stands are open. What good does it do me to go for a walk when the kids want ice cream when we are done? Frozen yogurt is not ice cream!!

I have started walking every night after work. I take the kids to the park and off I go. My goal was to add 500 steps a day to my number and maybe lose 30 pounds by 9/5 ( my ten year wedding anniv.) unfortunately, I find that I am backsliding. I think I got overzealous when I started and my legs and ankles are so sore.

I love to read and surf the web. I am trying to learn to love more active things! Mom says she'll come in to town and walk with me. I am gonna hold her to it. She can push Michael's bike when he poops out, she is closer to the ground than I am!!

Here is a new thread to help get to know each other. If you haven't had a chance to tell us about yourself (or even if you have) please take the time to share a little about yourself.

How long you've been with SparkPeople ... What are your goals ... What is your biggest motivation ... or your hardest hurdle ... Where do you get the most support ... some of your favorite exercises, activities or hobbies. These are only a few suggestions ... you can share as little or as much as you like.

I have been a member for 3 1/2 months and so far so good. I'm not losing as fast as I had planned ... but I am losing (not gaining)! My biggest motivation is my health. I'm tired of taking my prescription medications, and I'm hoping that losing weight and eating healthy will help me to eliminate the need for some of them.

Chocolate is probably my biggest hurdle ... followed by going out on FRiday nights ... and then staying in a regular exercise plan.

I have lots of friends around that help me through some of the rough times ... Joy is great ... and my friend Amy at work is there all the time helping me with healthy eating.

My favorite form of exercise is strength training ... and maybe walking. I can't stand the treadmill or stationary bike ... I think they get too boring. I would rather be outside in the fresh air, viewing the sights when I walk.

Golf, Gardening, and Scrapbooking are my top 3 favorite activities ...

I have a great family ... Hubby, 2 daughters (one married so that gives me an extra son) and one son. All grown ... well sort of my son is just finishing his first year of college so will be home the end of next week!!! O yeah ... hubby is home all the time now too ... I guess you could say he is sort of in retirement ... but not sure he wants to stay that way right now.

I'm and assistant group supervisor in a pre-school ...
and work with the school age children through the summer.

Life is great ...
