Hello to all! emoticon I guess I should have checked this thread sooner so I could have been more familiar with more of this team's members! But I suppose that's just my nature- emoticon I tend to work backwards!

My name is Becky and I've been an active member of SparkPeople since June. I really love this site- it's openned my eyes to different aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Things I always KNEW I should be doing (counting calories, regular exercise) but wasn't focussing on! emoticon For years I did this type of thing subconsciously when I was coaching soccer. Now that I'm only reffing, I've kinda slipped up. SparkPeople has helped me refocus!

I've also met some new people being a member of Erie Sparkers! People I wouldn't have met during the course of my everyday life. So welcome New Members and Hello to everyone I previously didn't introduce myself to! emoticon

Hi! My name is Carolyn. Funny I was just going through one of the message boards and found this group. I live in Little Cooley so I'm a Cooleyite and was a Corryite for most of my life. I am diabetic and am having a terrible time. Living in the country makes new challenges. We have a neighbor from Erie who is retired and we have made friends with him and his wife. As a matter of fact we are invited to their house for a fish supper tonight.
My hubby and I are also retired. I have six grandchildren. The oldest is 18 and the youngest is nine. Anyhow I'd love to make friends with any of you.
I have been with SP FOR 14 DAYS and haven't lost a pound yet. I need to go somewhere to exercise. Closest gym is 12 miles away. I am also looking for a buddy to talk to. It's lonesome here in the boonies. So feel free to email me if you want. Caroly n

Hi! my name is Amy. I'm an Erie-ite. I didn't knwo we had an Erie spark team here! IT'll be nice to have the support of others who share in the same long winter/short summer syndrome!

My goals right now are to get my diet under control and obviously to loose weight. I'm pretty active, I enjoy doing my turbo jam videos and workign out in my basement. I'm also keeping after two active young kiddos.

Hello I'm Sherita and I just joined today, the reason I decided to lose this weight, is to be much more energetic and to change the way others view me. Hi, My name is Amanda. I started Sparkpeople a really long time ago, and kind of quit for a while (not working on my health, but the website), but now I'm back. I'm only 4 lbs away from my goal, and these last four are taking forever! What I wouldn't give to go back to the 5 lb/week loss of when I started! Welcome to Erie Sparkers! I've been with spark since last February and surpassed my goal last October after I started eating clean. You will meet a lot of great people here!

I might suggest you do some research on the slim fast products. If you look at the ingredients...sugar is the first or second ingredient.

OK, I need to rant a little today! In the last few weeks I have been contacted by several people who have had questions, wanting to know why they weren’t seeing any weight loss. The key thing these people had in common was that they were using a “weight loss” meal replacement shake. OK, here we go…there are good and there are bad...just like anything else in life!

When I asked what they were using I knew the problem. With this particular product, as well as many others, the first or second ingredient was SUGAR! Hello????? Does that make sense to any of you!!!! You can’t feed your body sugar and expect it to lose weight. You can’t stop eating healthy food and drink an expensive, sugar loaded “meal” and expect to see progress!!!! Do your homework!

There are good and there are bad products out there. I drink a protein/fiber shake every day to supplement my clean eating lifestyle. I don’t use it as a meal replacement, I use it for my snack, as I am in maintenance mode. It's good!

Back to the bad. The particular shake that I was hearing about, which is very popular…has these four ingredients listed first: milk, sugar, fructose and cocoa! It only has 12 grams of protein and 38 grams of carbohydrates! You would be better off drinking a glass of 1% milk! But according to their “diet” plan, you should drink one for breakfast, one for lunch and then eat a healthy dinner

Here is my next problem with these so called “healthy shakes”. They contain 240 calories each. So if you have that twice a day and then a healthy dinner…not only are you getting a lot of sugar, but you are not getting enough GOOD calories in a day. Too few calories means your body will go into starvation mode and hold onto the fat! Not only that, since you are ingesting sugar, your body will burn the sugar for fuel rather than the stored fat. There is so much sugar in these products and so little fiber that your blood sugar is going to go through the roof which will cause cravings, fatigue, mood swings and more cravings!

It is true you must eat fewer calories to lose weight…but not that way! Do your homework!

The next problem…because your calories are so low you are likely going to lose muscle as well as any fat you may lose. Not good. Muscle burns calories even at rest, so less muscle means slower metabolism. Do your homework.

Why does this brand continue to sell? Well to begin with because of the great marketing machine behind it. Two, because it looks simple (there is no get quick thin program). And three, because most people don’t do their homework!

There are great products on the market…but you must do your homework and know what you are getting. Look for products that use natural sweeteners such as Stevia or Lo Han. Look for low fat (no saturated fat) and low calories. The shake I use only has 110 calories per serving. And look for high protein!

Also be realistic! Two pounds per week is a healthy weight loss goal!

Nutrition is 80% of the equation. Clean up your diet, exercise and watch the weight come off! If you want to supplement with a protein or fiber shake, just make sure you know what you are drinking!

OK…enough of my rant!

Hi, all! My name is Robin and I just started with Sparkpeople a couple of days ago. I started my new "diet" on Monday, February 4th. I am using Slim Fast Products and plan. I am also using Leslie Sansone's "Walk at Home" DVD. It's the 3 Mile Weight Loss Walk. I love it!!! :-))) I did Formu 3 when it was in Erie about 16 years ago and had gotten pretty close to my goal weight and kept it off for quite some time. But, then I met my current husband, George and we had a "surprise" daughter. There went my thin me!!! Of course, I have a beautiful 8 year-old daughter, Allison. Now, to lose the weight I gained during my pregnancy and after. I look forward to "meeting" and getting to know all of you. Oh! My hobbies are reading and needlework.

I've been with sparks since January 19 ... so I guess I'm sort of new too! My goal it to eat healthier and exercise more. I had total knee replacement last March and June ... and am planning to be completely recovered (or as close as I can possibly get) by summer so I can have fun in my garden. It was murder not being able to work in it last year.

I never knew recovery from knee surgery could take so long ... they said 12-18 months, but I thought that was just a way of covering all bases. It really is taking that long!!! Not for lack of exercise ... I had PT for 6 weeks after each knee ... exercised at the Wellness Center for a month before my second surgery ... ride the bike at home ... do the suggested home exercises regularly until I started back to work full time in November ... now chasing 3 and 4 year olds keeps me on my feet constantly! I joined Nautilus the 1st of January and have been there almost every other day since. I'm just beginning to see a little weight loss ... but my knees have seemed to improve quite a bit.

I'm hoping the daily visit to Sparks will keep me on track. I track my daily food intake (so far so good-mostly) and my every other day strength training sessions.

Cardio workouts are my downfall ... I'm not getting on my bike like I used to ... seems with work, Nautilus, housework, and the much needed sleep at the end of the day, I just don't have time for the workouts. I tried the water aerobics twice a week, but my legs weren't strong enough to do the moves under water yet, and I managed to do one move (that I'm not supposed to do) and hurt my knee ... it kept me out of the gym for a week. Now I'm working to strengthen my knees and legs so I be ready for the water aerobics.

I hope everyone remembers to take one day at a time ... if there is a problem day ... just work to make the next one better. If we all have enough 'better' days I'm sure we can all reach our goals.

Hello to everyone,
I am so glad there is a group of Erie people here. This is my second time to try this. I really need a lot of support because I just can't do it on my own. Along with being overweight I am legally blind and have physical limitations due to a birth defect.Since I can't drive it is so hard to buy the groceries I need to stay healthy. My back and hips hate doing grocery shopping. I ordered a recumbant exercise bike and can't wait for it to arrive.

Hiya ALL Not sure if I am doing this right but I just want to introduce my self. My name is Shelley and I live in Erie(Wesleyville) I am 34 years.I am new to sparks ,never heard of it till today when a friend told me of it. I have tried the diets and have not tried the ones that cost a lot of money. I lost some weight but have a lot more I want to lose. I am also looking forward to meeting you all.

I have lived near Erie all my life. I have moved away and came back several times. I am new to this site. It is my second time to attempt this site. I am computer illiterate, but I am learning. Thanks. I hope it is a good year for us all!
