You know, Deborah, that night really surprised me too. The cats usually flee to the stable next door when they smell the vet. And they also run - all except Tessy - when they see little kids. So I was very surprised that each time I'd go out to the yard and call a name that the cat would come, let me pick him/her up, and take her to the mayhem of the tiny kitchen. The vet's wife was shocked that they all had names and that I could give a ballpark for birthdays and years. I explained that I must have been Catholic in a past life...

Very cool that you can give so many cats such individual attention. What a great vet and family. That had to be a tough night for you. I can barely get them to take a pill much less catch them to give them shots!

Something pretty funny happened a few weeks ago. My vet, his wife, his assistant, and his 4-year-old daughter showed up at about 10:30PM with a cooler of vaccines. His wife Blanca had the health booklets for each cat. I would bring a cat, we'd weigh it, then give it leukemia, triple, and rabies vaccines and a deparasiting shot. We managed 12 cats of the 28 that evening + the two cats that get a cortisone-steroid shot each month. It was like an assembly line and believe me, the fur was EVERYWHERE! We did all this on the kitchen table. Uy!

Welcome to the team! That is a lot of cats you take care of, but at least you are responsible enough to have them all fixed. I'm glad the cats found you to take care of them.

What a wonderful thing you're doing taking care of your cat family! How fortunate the cats are to have found you. Good luck on getting the tax-free shelter status and in the meantime, keep on doing what you're doing!

We have 3 kitties and I LOVE them all just the same---most of the time, LOL..They can be an expense but through the Animal Birth COntrol we got oen fixed and shots for $50 and I adopted another for $40 who had the shots and is fixed and is microchipped. MY first two (stray kitties) I had we paid full price to get fixed and shots at the ASPCA 5 years ago!

One bite, one day, one pound at a time. Remember you are worth the effort!

Thanks, Nellie and JayMaxx! I do the best I can. All my cats know their names, are unique, and are very special to me. I still have a couple that are close to feral, but all the others are sweet, at least to me if not to each other all the time. I'll get more photos of them posted on my Spark Page in the near future so you can see my babies.

Hello. I'm Jodi and I live in Central Mexico. I moved here 16 years ago with my 2 cats that I'd adopted from a NY shelter 8 years before. Little by little, more cats came to us. When we moved to our current house 6 years ago we had 10 cats. This house had been abandoned for some time and had about a dozen cats living in and around it. As we began feeding them, more came. We reached a high of 44 cats that we considered 'ours', plus several invadors that were coming to eat and leaving, or sticking around and fighting with our cats.

Through great effort and an understanding vet, we spayed and neutered all of them. We fell behind on vaccines. The cost was overwhelming, but it's extremely difficult to give cats away in Mexico. People don't like them - especially black cats. This past year has been very hard on our cats. We lost several to feline leukemia. It's very difficult to control, what with feral cats passing through all the time. Between leukemia and mysterious disappearances, we're down to 28 cats now. It seems that the leukemia has left us now.

The neighbors think we're nuts, but I feel good about giving these kitties a much better quality of life than they would have had otherwise.

I'm trying to determine how to declare our 'shelter' just that and get tax-free status, enabling us to receive discounts on cat food, receive donations, etc. Meanwhile we just keep on keeping on, and I play with my cats WAY more than the 10 minutes a day goal that we have in this group!
