I finally have my husband on board this time around. It is a lifestyle that we both need to learn as we are both obese. We are currently doing the 4 day diet that is on Celebrity Fit Club and watching the pounds come off. It is hard! I want to go back into the unhealthy eating patterns that I've learned ever since I was young. It is nice to have this site to track and gain knowledge at the same time. WooooHoooo!

Hi everyone! I just joined today after my co-worker/friend told me about the site. She heard about from First Magazine, I think. Anyway, just wanted to say hello! I'm trying to lose weight and stop stress/boredom eating. I hope everyone has a great day!

Hello Everyone!
I'm new here. I just read about this site in a Good Housekeeping Mag. I'm a nurse who works night shift. I find it very hard to know when to eat and when not to. I usually only eat once a day on the days I work, but I seem to make up for it on the days I'm off. Just joined the Wellness Connection where I work. Will start yoga and low impact aerobics this week. I feel like I'm on my way. I look forward to all of your support and I will be behind you guys all the way. I look forward to talking with you in the future. Good luck everyone!

Hi,

I'm not really "new, new' but someone who has made a few feeble attempts to make this work. I'm a single mom to six kids ages 12 - 24 years old (most of my kids are adults now) and I'm at least 150lbs overweight. I am about the size my mom was at my age. It scares me to look in the mirror and see her staring back at me. I run an IT business in Silicon Valley and I sit a lot. I'm also a gamer (MMORPG - mainly EQ2) and I love to write. All sedentary activities! My boyfriend jokes that if I really want to lose weight I could just get a job as a ditch-digger. It's true isn't it? lol No ditch digging for me, changing the way I eat isn't as much of an issue as getting active again.

Anyway, looking forward to getting to know everyone!

OH and I'm starting again - so my weight slider thingie may change a bit because I think I've gained since the last time. Also, you can find me on Facebook at facebook.com/snowwrite - LinkedIn - linkedin.com/in/snowwrite and Twitter @snowwrite

Hello, everyone! I'm new to SP and have huge expectations of myself now that I have a place where I can get all the help and support that I need on this journey. I'm a 41 y/o wife and mother of 4 who works about 60 hours a week in a sedentary office job. I've gained 100 lbs over the past 4 years mostly due to my inactivity at work and eating all the wrong things. I know it is time to make a lifestyle change and I'm ready!!!! emoticon

Hi, I am not so new here, I have been observing for awhile and decided that y'all don't bite. I am a 43 y/o female who had gastric bypass and am not losing weight like I should. I am looking for support and maybe an excercise buddy in the Utica, NY area.
Thanks,

Howdy folks, I'm new to the program and the website. I have never seen anything like this and I'm awed at the magnitude of tools and support available.

I'm 42, paralyzed in a wheelchair, married, work at home full time, college full time, and moonlight part-time.

I need a weight loss buddy, hopefully someone in my area that I can meet with in person for exercise, healthy eating, journaling, etc. Deep down, you know you need one too!

I think age is a number that we can choose to be our focus or we can choose to focus on how we feel... but then I have a 90+ year old grandmother with congestive heart failure who is very proud of being able to out walk most of her kids and grandkids... so I have always felt that that was one number that really wasn't all it claimed to be lol :D

Hello,

I am new to this team! Joined Jenny Craig about 7 weeks ago and joined SparkPeople about the same time to track calories, etc....

I need to lose about 100 lbs -- lost 10 so far! Looking forward to hearing from others with the same goals!

Oh, one more thing -- I am 50, but would like to think of myself as being a 40 something!!

Hello - I am new today. And I am going to be new every day from now on. That is one goal, to become a new person from the fat, inactive and depressed one that I have been for the past 9 years (and there were other years before that) So, I am Angela, I am going to lose 182 lbs, I am going to quit smoking and I am going to start rollerblading again.

Hello Jennifer !

Welcome to the team ! Those are great resolutions I must say. You quit smoking the same day that I did, I did that in 2001 and just celebrated my 9 yrs of no smoking of course. It was a joyous occasion for us.

Congratulations on the 17 lb loss ! That's wonderful ! We all have ups and downs on the scales we're going to have those bumps every now and then and soon they will get less and less.

Yes depression and obesity really do go hand in hand, I'm also being treated for it and doing very well on the medicine they put me on. I know you'll do very well.

You're going to get those pounds off your frame soon because you'll be working the spark system as I call it. The nutrition tracker and the exercise tracker really are wonderful tools, they are very useful.

If you have any questions please let us know, Holly and I would be happy to help. Take care.

Hello all, I'm new! My name is Jennifer, I'm (almost) 41, and I weigh over 300 pounds. Ugh.

My New Years' resolution was:
1. Quit Smoking and
2. Lose the weight.

I did finally get the hang of it and quit smoking on Valentines' Day. And since I joined Spark (also started the beginning of this year) I've taken off 17 pounds...but I think I've hit a bit of a tough patch now and gained some back, and I am NOT looking forward to getting on the scale next week. I just recently started treatment for depression...big shocker there...obesity and depression seem to come together for so many.

Anyhoo, getting thin/fit is just about all I think about. I want all this flab off me SO bad!

Definitely on the low cholesterol/low fat diet, in addition to the low sodium one that they had already procribed and the site is just a life saver trying to figure that out! :D Wow, I had mine out on Friday, they knew on Wednesday that they were going to need to do the surgery but the surgeon wanted to have the ultra sounds done since it was in a different hospital from the one that I had the cat scan. While the doctor and surgeon were able to talk, the tests didn't get sent and the surgeon needed to see what he was heading into. I actually was admitted Thursday and was discharged on Sunday, which is long for a laproscopic procedure but I was having trouble with keeping even water down for the first bit until they got everything balanced. Today I got to tell my Pulmonary Specialist about Sparks and while his nurse knew about the site, he had never heard of it before and was going to be checking it out too. While I haven't been released yet by the surgeon, I am definitely doing really well and progressing on the road to healing. :D
So how are you healing up?

Hi Tankerbear, welcome. I also had gall bladder surgery last week, I had mine on thursday and got out of the hospital on saturday. Do they have you on a low-fat low-cholesterol diet? Sparkspeople makes it easier to keep track of that. Good luck!

Welcome to the team ! You have a lot on your plate but I know you will find the key that suits your needs here at sparks.

That's right you will reach your goal one day at a time, that's a fantastic attitude and a very down to earth outlook on it as well. If you need help or have questions please feel free to ask and we'll be happy to help.

Hi,
I am new here too. I was told about the web site of all places by a nurse while I was in recuperating from gall bladder surgery 5 days ago... I am familiar with diabetic exchange diet which is really similar with what is used here but am excited to see the recipe ideas. I had already been dealing with a low sodium diet that was prescribed presurgery and was able to take off almost 20 lbs with the last 3 or so lbs being a real yo-yo battle. However, with the new restrictions that have been added, I was drawing a blank on ideas of what to fix for not just myself but also for my family since I don't want to be fix multiple meals for each meal time. Anyways, I still have a long ways to go on reaching my goal but it is one day at a time and working toward that goal of health, which despite what I have to loose is my ultimate over reaching goal.

Hey all, I'm not really new ... not really, but I first joined up 2 years ago ... and then stopped, why, not sure, but now I am back and this time I am looking into all the helpful tools, because this time I realize I cannot do this on my own. I am back, with a new resolve and hopefully, this time I WILL do it.

Well to be honest I set my own calorie standard on my nutrition tracker. I just multiplied the weight I want to be by 10 and it came to 1750 cal a day. So that's what I'm doing.

I knew I had been consuming around 3500 - 4000 cal a day in my pre-Spark life too so this made sense to me to go to 1750 for my height and goal weight. It's very easy to stick with too, I'm not hungry and it is a very good menu they have here.

You can set your own calorie ceiling on the nutrition tracker. Let me know if you need help with it. Take care.

Hi Alison,

Thank you for your help - I was then able to find the 10 lb. award (though Spark has them well hidden, haha - had to click through like 5 screens!). I haven't changed my icon yet though.

Do you think Spark automatically sets the same calories for everyone, regardless of starting weight? We all know bigger people need more calories. I think there is less chance for success for us to start with 1200 cal. right away, when we may have been consuming 4000 or more in our pre-Spark lives.

Hi and welcome ! I know I got my 5lb loss icon myself from the trophy icon on my page, the other ones are there too. These you give to yourself. I hope someone else can help with that, if not please visit the technical tab and ask that question, I believe it tells you there, I'll check that out too.

Well as for the suggested calories I took what I want to weigh and multiplied it by 10 and that's the amount of cals I take in each day and I do have a loss. For me it's 1750 a day. If you want to lose faster, which I would not recommend, then you probably could go lower but like I said I wouldn't recommend doing that, it's not very healthy.

Yes and not eating the things that we were eating that got us in this position in the first place certainly do help immensely.

Let us know if you have any other questions and we'll try to help, Holly (nightskystar) is our other co-leader. Take care.

Hi - I'm new here, and finding it really helpful.

I have a question - I must have turned something off in my preferences, cause when I hit the 10 lbs. lost mark, I didn't get the little "I Lost 10 pounds" icon anywhere on my screen. Can anyone tell me how those are given (10, 20, 50 lbs., etc)?

Also, does anyone else think that 1200-1550 suggested calories is too low for people of our size? I think other programs I have tried had it at least 1800 calories for people over 200 lbs. Some days I eat over 2000 calories, and I am still losing weight (well, not eating macaroni & cheese and ice cream everyday helps!) lol

I just joined tonight. I am more than ready to kick start a new life. I currently weigh 290 (5'9") and I should weigh around 145. I was doing pretty good about weight loss last Fall. I lost 20 pounds and was excercising and enjoying it then stress hit (close friend died in an accident) and all my progress nearly went back to zero. So I am feeling better and ready to move forward again. I am tired of feeling tired with no energy and feeling apologetic because of my weight. Hard to describe. I know that I am who I am and I like myself but I cringe when I have to ask for that seat belt extender and I hate that the clothes I want I cant even think about wearing. When I go shopping with friends I look at purses, jewelry, and shoes. One of my goals is to shop at victorias secret for that little black dress and look hot in it.

Welcome to the team ! Don't sweat it, most of us had or have a lot more than 100 lbs to lose, that's why we're here, to help, support and motivate eachother. I know that you will be successful in your journey. you can do this. This site is amazing and so are the people. You won't be sorry, trust me ! I've never felt better or done so well in my life.

My name is Cathy. I have a LOT of weight to lose. A lot more than 100 lbs. But I figure, if I lose 20# first, I'll feel a little better. Than maybe the feeling will be better with 30# loss. I gotta do it this time. Can this site be my saving grace?

Hi, I'm Kelly. I have 115 pounds to lose. I've managed to take off as much as 50 lbs. before, but I gained it all back within months of going back to work. I been fighting this battle my whole life. This time I'll win. I'm not sure what is different this time, but something is.

Hi there -

I've heard good things about this site and hope that it can help me begin a long journey back to good health. I was injured exactly 3 years ago and I just really miss my 'former' life so much. I have gained 120 pounds in 3 year (due to inability to move much, lots of painkillers and depression) and feel like I've 'woken up' in an alternate universe...certainly a different body than the one I had 3 years ago. I'm hopeful today!

Question? I LOVE peanut butter. I don't eat it often though because of the fat and calories etc. Can anyone recommend a lower fat/lower sugar/lower calorie option? It HAS to taste EXACTLY like Jif creamy lol. Or as close to it as possible. Otherwise, I'll just forgo it most of the time. As I am really picky about it, and I'm too cheap to buy stuff I won't eat, I'm kind of afraid to try lol

Thanks,
Suzanne

Hi and good morning. My name is Suzanne and I have 130 pounds to lose. I have been struggling, and losing, with the weight loss battle pretty much as long as I can remember. I am hoping and praying that this time, whatever needs to click will click and it will be the last time I head down this road. Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and say hi.
