Hi, I am reenie and I just joined today! I just recently moved to Oklahoma, so I don't know anyone here. I need to lose over 50 pounds. I planned on doing this before my 50th birthday. Guess what? My birthday is within 2 weeks! I need to find motivation and also how to forgive myself when I don't get done what I need to in time. Then I just throw in the towel and say "forget it". I have to find a way to quit doing that. I am afraid I won't keep this up. When I get motivation, it doesn't last for long. Losing weight is one of the toughest things for me.

Hi Kathy. Congratulations to you on all you have accomplished so far! That is awesome! My name is Cheryl and I live in TX, USA and I joined Spark probably a couple of years ago and have not been motivated till lately. I joined a weight loss clinic and see them almost everyday and is helping me get motivated. Their plan is so ridiculously strict though. It's really hard. Anyway, I mostly was writing to see if you know a way on Spark to list what you've eaten during the day and have it do the calories for you? I have Spark on my phone and looked on here but haven't seen anything. Keep up the good work. I didn't know you weren't considered obese at or under 175 so that's a good first goal for me. I've lost like 4 lbs, that's how new to weight loss I am, and I'm at 240 now. Thanks, Cheryl

Hi I'm Becky and I need to lose more than 50 lbs. I recently moved to NC from MN and have 2 gorgeous daughters, my older one also has a weight problem, so I really need to fix my lifestyle!
Is there anyone else about in the Raleigh area? If s, I'd love to work out with someone, especially someone interested in walking for now and moving up to running when it seems feasible.

Hello I am Vanessa and I am 26 years old and have to lose over 50 pounds. My aunt just got me the sparkpeople book and in it it talked about how posting on message boards helps and the advice and support everyone gives is very helpful. That is what I am looking for. I am open for any advice or tips anyone has to keep motivated and to start right. My problem is the meal preparations I am not a very good cook haha. I love the nutrition tracker and how it can give you the meals to eat and the directions to make it the only problem is that I have to keep buying new ingredients and the old ones just spoil. So if anyone out there has a plan to share with me please do.

Hi! I am 18 years old and my height is 5' 2". I weigh wayyyyy too much for my frame and I am here to lose weight and become healthy. Motivating myself to actually get up and exercise is a huge problem. I hate working out and I always think about doing other things more enthralling like homework, reading, or playing video games. I've joined SparkPeople to get the motivation I need and to learn how to motivate myself!! I look forward to the results but not the actual work... I can't be the only one who this is true for!!! :)

Also, how do I get that strip at the bottom of my posts to show where I am on my weight losing spree?

My name is Julie and I signed up several months ago but I am ashamed of how much weight I have to lose so I never posted anything. I always thought I was healthy - I quit smoking a year ago but still I can't control my weight. I have a hard time now just doing normal stuff. Need to learn to control how much I eat - eating right in large amounts is still a problem. To be healthy I need to lose at best 65 pounds.

Good morning...my name is Glenda. I signed up yesterday and decided to join your team...I weigh 165 lbs right now and would really like to lose 50 to 60 lbs. I've tried different diet and exercise programs but nothing seems to work for me. I don't think that there's anything wrong with them, I think it's just really me...I need to motivate myself more, I am hoping that I can meet people here that can help me achieve my goals. I am starting a P90x program today and will also try to eat healthy...

Jessica and Jennifer, I joined Spark in Feb 07 and didn't do that much with it either. In the past several months I've been trying to check in each day, track my food, and have something to log for exercise. The site really is great if you use it.

If you want suggestions Jessica on where to start, I'd say tracking food and do some sort of activity each day whether it's a 15 minute walk or something more doesn't matter. Just do something. It helps build a positive cycle.

Sonief, you've got half the battle won already by figuring out that planning is a key component to all this. If I don't plan my lunch the day before, I end up eating junk when I'm at work. So good for you!

Good Morning - I found this website back in June & wanted it on my Blackberry to log food & exercise like WW. My thing is that I am really done with "dieting" and more about lifestyle changes. I am also part of the walking team & am planning to walk for 60 min every day & log all my food. Good place to start. Just printed out some good recipes for the family and headed to store. Planning is key!
Jessica I like the idea of focusing on the 10% increments - Best tip I have is to keep your goals in front of you all the time so that you stay out of that mindless place of forgetting all you want to accomplish emoticon

Hi Everyone...I'm not exactly new to SP but I have never stuck with it. There has always been tons of excuses and any one of them would do. But I am done with the excuses. I am tired of looking and feeling this way. I am tired of constantly being asked if I am pregnant. I've only been truly overweight for about the past 15 years. Prior to that everyone always used to be jealous of how I was able to maintain my thin stature without much effort but that has all changed now I am looking at 65 extra pounds that I just want gone.I have been paying for a gym membership for about 8 years that has almost virtually gone unused. Well all that is about to change because FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION!!! I WILL SUCCEED!!!

Hello Everyone, I'm Liz. I started here 2 days ago April 5th, I too have been overweight for nearly all my life. I was about 170Lbs when I went away for college, then I was introduced to birth control and ever since have gained weight no matter what method I try. I am now 229Lbs and I refuse to have the scale go up anymore, My goal is 165Lbs and I am hoping to learn some skills so that I can start living a healthier life. I am hoping to learn some quick and tasteful recipes to add into my meal preparations. Any ideas that are high in protein and low in carb and fat are really appreciated. Thank You all for this team, looking forward to more discussions....

I started at the beginning of November and I am 20 years old. I weighed 145 5 years ago before I met my husband and now I weigh 236. I really want to wear that bikini next summer and not feel like such a blob. I don't have anyone to help motivate me and I hate working alone. I need a diet I can follow recipe for recipe. Please help. emoticon

Hi;

I just started 3 days ago to day is my 4 day and I too am wondering if I will make it this time. but I believe if we remain there for each other we will succeed.

I mean we are already big and we don't like it so the least we can do is try to change what we don't like other or ourselves to see.

welcome on board, let us be strong for each other and keeping praying that god will bring us through

Hi,
My name is Krystal and I live in Australia. I have been overweight my whole life and i never really felt affected by it. I was large but i never gained or lost weight. Then four years ago I decided there was no harm in trying to loose a little bit of weight. What followed was four years of exercising ALOT and eating on diet after diet. I remember I was month 3 into my first diet. I was following it to the tee and exercising 5 times per week and I gained 8kg (16pounds) in one month. But this did not deter me I kept trying for years. And all I got for my effort was an extra 50kg (100 pounds). Now I find myself at a point where it's so critical to keep trying but I'm afraid that if I try I will gain more weight. Before I started this crazy journey I didn't have any food addictions and now I find it hard to control what goes in my mouth. So I find myself spilling my story as a random blog because this is a story I find I can't tell anybody; my family don't understand, doctors don't help.
Thank you for letting my tell my story. I look forward to making a positive change with spark people and starting again.

Hi All,

I had lost about 100 1bs before and I kept it off. Last year I got preganant and gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and 50lbs. I keep trying to lose it and now the baby is 4 months and I am still fat. As someone mentioned earlier, i keep trying to lose it, but i can't even stick to any kind of diet for more than a day. It is like I am truely addicted to food. Most of the time I don't even want to eat it but once I go into the kitchen I can't get out unless I eat a million things. Food and dieting is constantly on my head. I just bought a new recombiant bike so I can start to exercise again. I went from running 5-6 miles a day to a couch potatoe and I hate it. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! emoticon

Hi everyone, here I am .... I know it is all about diet and exercise and I do go on a daily basis. I have a difficult time with exercise and have a very sendentary job. I want to dance but find myself making excuses not to.

I am presently fasting chocolate for Lent and found that I actually am NOT addicted to chocolate because my fast has been successful for the past five weeks. Now I have been also telling myself that I am addicted to sugar and wonder what would happen if I fasted sugar! But a little voice says, "oh but you love to neutralize the acid in spaghetti sauce with sugar". I am having difficulty with getting serious about losing weight and realize that if I were really serious, things like giving up sugar in spaghetti sauce would not really matter.

no thyself, then trick thyself!
nice to meet all of you.

God loves me just the weigh I am and too much to leave me this weight!

i looked at my entry last year jan 1 i weighed 10lbs less then i do now. I will turn fifty in March this is stupid. I used my child's Wii exercise today and sweated on the low intensity. I did work out 30 min on treadmill today. I am too smart to continue doing this I have wasted my forties it will not happen to me in my 50's.

I am a huge procrastinator. I am 40, I weigh, well, I'm not comfortable saying it out loud or even seeing my weight. I've never been this size. I will not buy a larger size. And I refuse to look like I'm pregnant anymore.

I bought myself a planner and "scheduled" my work out days, bought post it notes, wrote cheesy little sayings like Treadmill 30 minutes today or Resist the chocolate and put them on the frig, the bathroom mirror and on the steering wheel of my car.

I scheduled treadmill as a recurring reminder in my cell phone with an annoying ringtone that I will not stop until I'm at the YMCA.

My best bud Angie has been asked to call me 3 x week and literally give me hell if I haven't worked out 3 times a week. Yes, I asked for this and she does it.

I have set small, attainable exercise goals and rewards for myself like:

Treadmill 30 minutes / 5 days a week = Starbucks (lowfat, sugar free of course) Oh yea!

Weights 3 x week = sugar free chocolate pudding or whatever you want. This is the one that I hate so chocolate will be my reward.

I am sometimes intimidated when I go to the Y when I see all of those skinny people who hop on the machines, don't struggle like I do, don't sweat, make it look easy but told myself that they were once my size too and it made it better. It motivates me.

I hope this helps you. I honestly just had to realize that only I could control me, no one could do this for me, folks could encourage me until the sun comes up but it takes me just doing it.

hey, everyone. So I came in here because I could use support but also feel I have some to offer. In reading a lot of your posts, I can relate. I've been an up and down dieter also.. lose, gain, lose, gain feeling discouraged all the while.

Well, that's changed. I recently had a motivational kick in the ass. I found out that my mom who is only 43 is having some major health problems related to her weight. She told me she's on the verge of a heart attack which is crazy at her age. So I vowed right then at that moment, that I need to change now, or that will be me. I've started at it again stronger than ever and every time I doubt myself or get discouraged or start making up excuses, I think of my mom and how she could've avoided this and how I will not end up there. Hope maybe my story is inspirational to others and I hope that none of you has to have this experience. Good luck everyone, you all have it in you somewhere, just find it!!

Girl, when I read your words I thought it was myself writing that.....I am the exact same way. I have no support at home from my husband or anyone else. I need to do this and I want to do this. I just don't know why I don't stick with it. I think I want to blink my eyes and look like Paris Hilton or something. I know what to do, how to do it and why to do it. I just don't do it for whatever reason.

We need a procrastinators united team or something....only problem is who would make the time to start it? lol. I am looking for a buddy, someone i can be friends with and depend on for this area of my life. I want that person to be able to depend on me for the same things.

Maybe you might look for someone to be a buddy and help you out too. Maybe they can motivate you in a way you can't on your own.

Best of luck to you.

Hi,
I'm new and your team came highly recommended for support according to this site. I need to lose 50-60 pounds to be healthy again. Any support would be appreciated. A buddy would be nice too. I'm kind of just down today.

Hey,

I have a similar story too....I have been on and off of my exercise and food schedule.....I have lost 16lbs with SP then gained 3 lbs then again lost 3lbs then again gained 3 lbs.....and basically I am a procastinator, which is my biggest problem and I don't know how to overcome it....I mean I think a lot that I will do this or do that to overcome procastination but when the situation arrives to overcome it I cannot overcome my procastination.

I don't know how to get up and get started....I just cannot tell myself enough or cannot convince myself to get up and start walking or doing any exercise....I just sit and keep thinking that I am going to do this but I never do it.....days and weeks have passed and I haven't exercised until 3 days ago.....this time I want to stick to it.....and I want to reach my goal weight......this time I want to remain commited to it and I want suggestions and help from u guys......please suggest what should I do to tell myself to get up and start exercising??.....what should I do to stop procastinating for anything??.....why my motivation drops so quickly??....any help and suggestion will be appreciable. Thanks.

Arpita

Hey all. I havee been up again down again for two years and I need to do it this time, for myself...I would love to find a buddy who is in it for the long haul too. I do alright at first...and then when it gets tough and slow, we all know that is where the support is needed the most. No one in my life really understand what it is like and so I am turning to you. Let me know if you would like to pair up.

I definitely need your help. I have been trying for years to lose weight without success. I can stick with a plan for a week or 2. I am not getting anywhere and I am at a loss as to what to do. I tell myself why would it work this time when I've failed every other time in the past. I desparately need to get this weight off. It is not only affecting me physically, but emotionally as well. I can't even look in the mirror any more. I know it can be done, but I don't know what I need to motivate me to stick with it.

Hello everyone,
I feel a little better knowing that I'm not alone but, I still have a problem with portion control and saying "no". Sometimes I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle with myself. I have only been doing this for a month. I work in a store that makes subs and Ice cream. The girls that work out back are pretty supportive and won't make me any cones or sundaes. However, that only helps me at work and doesn't do anything for portion control. Does anyone have any tips that may help in these areas? I'm starting to think I can't do it anymore.

Hello Im Tammy and could really use a lot of help. I joined SP back in May and have read and tracked and really tried to be consistent about making positive changes I haven't met any others to support me though. Im afraid I've been fooling myself thinking I'm making lasting changes but after last night I'm not so sure. emoticon

Mommacow, How come you call yourself that? It seems like a self fullfilling prophacy. do not give up especially if it will make your recovery better. have you tried yoga. Some of the moves do not put so much stress on your knee. Marrianne Willimson wrote a great book called a Return to Love. I need to reread it, but basically it was about providing love all around you and winthin and understand that it is a conscience choice to do this. Also if the circumstance does not help, learn to have a shift in perception so that it will. Keep strong. emoticon

I think the biggest thing is just to move. I know being stationary doesn't cut it. The same as just cutting cals doesn't make the mark. We must move. have you thought of getting one of those pedometers that counts your steps. Set a goal each day for the number of steps and then just do it. taking the stairs instead of an elevator even if it's just one flight of stairs. Park farther away in the parking lot etc. Just get started before you know it you will make progress. that is how I got started and now I am more regular in my activity. All the best

Just get up and move. May be it is a walk to smell the roses and not for the workout of a life time. While in motion then try and push yourself. do you see the quote last week. It really rang true for me. "It is hard to keep motivated just like it is hard to keep clean. That's why we bath every day" Me responding to you is making me evaluate the rest of the day and figure out how I can fit in some exercise. Thanks Heidi

Yikes! I was having a fine day...and was all ready to just go towards my bedroom when I remembered that I didn't finish cleaning up the kitchen and getting my lunch ready. So I also made the hubs' lunch.

Well, I got into some trouble...before I knew it, I was eating one of the rolls I was putting in his lunch...I had a moment or two of absolute blindness....I had a glimpse of control then boom! I spread a little mayo on some of the turkey, ate it..felt the soft, potato roll and bit it...then gobbled it...then added some butter to the second half and ate it....now I am angry with myself.

Why did I eat that? Hm...I felt kinda tired...and I was feeling a little mad that I was making hubs lunch an dhe was on the couch, falling asleep and didn't bother to help me clean up despite my pleas to help me clean up to keep me out of trouble...that is a weak spot for me...cleaning up. I need to get some gum to chew on then. LOTS OF IT BIG WADS

:( so mad at me.

Now I have to go in my room and fold a whole bunch of damn laundry. I want to eat more. Like a big piece of something squishy and sweet an dchocolatey.

:(
can anyone help me????

Woonsocketmom,

I am 43. We must learn to not start out gung ho! Part of Spark teaching is to start slowly and work our way up to a 10 mile walk. :)

I have always started out gung ho. I still have to pull back my reins. Start out with only 20 minutes of walking or exercise rather 30 minutes to an hour. Starting low impact also helps. Being overweight puts that additional resistance on our joints. As much as I hate to admit it, I am getting older. I am an avid backpacker. I hike the Grand Canyon twice a year. Lots of steps, if I don't properly train my knees would ruin a great trip.

I have also learned a good shot of Ibuprofen (800 mg) per day helps in the beginning as well.

I'm not that new to the site...I've just never set up my member profile until now, and I have kind of a dumb question.

I need to add a member photo, and I've noticed that somepeople have a virtual photo of themselves, some at their beginning weight and current weight. Does anyone know where you get a "virtual body" photo?

Thanks!

woonsocket, your goals are very close to mine - i am going from 187 to 125 and i'm trying to reach 145 by my birthday on 10/09/08. i have been on sparkpeople a long time but have only recently gotten the motivation to put actual effort in. i wish i could help with the knee pain, but i sympathize with how you let a day go by and before you know it it's a week and more... story of my life. perhaps you could try exercise that's lower impact than what you're doing now?

Hello not new, but a newbie, less than 2 months but this is my first official post to 50+

and help, heck yeah I could use all the help, advice, and suggestions and motivation I can get...

Cant we all? I am 41, and looking to hitting my target weight of 142 by my 42nd birthday which is 10/21/2008 -- battling the buldge has, up until now won with me, but now I got the Spark and refuse to be a victim of the weight anymore! I will become victorious over this battle and win !!

I do have a question - anyone know what somebody can do to eleviate knee pain before and after exercise?

this is been my pattern - I go all gun ho, then wake up with knee pain and then "rest" it off and that resting becomes days and the days become weeks and well ....

so if I can ease the pain I think I can be the slender person I am suppossed to be

thanks

Hi! I'm not new exactly, I've been a silent, browsing member of Sparkpeople for quite some time. It's time I finally get my butt into action and get healthy. My health is really being affected by this weight I have.

Question, is it better to weight yourself every day?

Your message almost sounded like me. I joined sparkpeople last year and had lost 20 lbs. People still say they can see I lost weight. The problem is that I had some life situations that caused me to stop my efforts. I have gained about 7 lbs back and I'm just sick about it. Instead of kicking myself I'm going to jump right back in. I'm just thankful to Sparkpeople for keeping the emails coming so that when I was ready, it was easy to come back. I wish you all the luck in your efforts mamaford2.

I am not brand new to sparkpeople. I am Jane. I am a 30 year old SAHM of 2 kids. I lost 20 pounds last year and then summer came and my motivation for working out fell through. I know. Procrastination never gets you anywhere. I am realistic in knowing I will never be a size 6. I never was even in middle school or high school. I just need to stay on track. For now, because of recovering from a bad battle with the flu, balancing housework and kids, I am aiming for 15 minutes a day of cardio. I have a Leslie Sansone 1 mile jogging video I want to use for a while. I would love to master the 4 mile walks quickly without gasping for air but i am going to work up to it. I just find it difficult to balance it all.

Well, I got an old excercise bike. I actually got on it. I'm so embarrased about how out of shape I am. I could only do 10 minutes and I had to keep stopping. Please tell me I will make it!

I like the idea of a swimming class. My problem with it is scheduling. I know everyone says I don't have time, but if you knew my honest schedule right now you would agree.

I'm a full time student with a family and a part-time job. I've sat down and looked extremely closely at my schedule and I don't know where I could find time to excercise. I'm in classes for 14 hours a week. I honestly need to spend about 24 hours studying/reading a week. I work for 21 hours a week. I spend 7.5 hours a week commuting to the university. That doesn't even start on time needed for my family; I've figured out that just dropping off and picking up my children from their activities and school takes up 4 hours a week.

I've done all this to figure out when I could manage my study time. The swimming classes are scheduled at various times through the week, but nothing fits in with my schedule.

Honestly, lack of time is my problem. What I really enjoyed in the past (back in my younger days when life wasn't so complicated) were sports activities. Playing soccer, basketball, skating and swimming was always a blast. Now I would love to start again, but these types of activities take larger chunks of time. It isn't the location that I dislike about walking, it is more my mental image about what a waist of time it is. As I walk, all I think about is how much I could be getting done with my other responsibilities.

I'm determined to get something figured out though. If I could get my hands on an exercise bike I would use it. I have a course that is actually on DVD. I'd pop it in to play and bike while I'm watching. That all boils down to $ though.

Swimming isn't to expensive and if you can find a water class that is good. Where do you walk? I think that is a big issue. You could walk a mall where it is warm. Some malls open early just to let people walk. Parks, beach and other places that have a lot scenery are nice places to just get out and enjoy the fresh air.

I've been around Spark People for a year now. I get started and then something comes up and I back track and put everything back on. I haven't really started to excercise. I'm really out of shape and I know that is where I need to start.

What would you recommend for me? Please don't say walking...I absolutely hate walking and I just won't do it. I need something else, that isn't going to cost me money.

Don't forget your exercise. When it is calculating your calories it takes into consideration what you put that you might exercise and not what you do exercise. Some people think that when you put in your exercise minutes that you have done it changes your calories but it doesn't.

Thank you. It did redo my meal plan when I changed my weight but it was still below. I will add a little more and see if that helps me feel better (no energy, sleepy, headache). Again, thanks.

When you say that it won't reach your calories did you set things up with Spark? You might need to go back and change your goals to change the calorie levels in your menu's. If that doesn't work then I would go ahead and add and extra snack to help bring your calories up to where they need to be.

Hello all! I joined this team about a year ago, but didn't really do much with it. I have 85 lbs to lose and I live in Nevada. I do have one question though. I have been devoted to my food tracker for the past three days (that's when I started) and I have been noticing that the meal plans that they give me do not reach the daily goals. Example, today, staying on plan, I will consume 1603 calories but my daily goal is 1790-2140. Yesterday, my calories were 1563. My carbs are lower too. Any advice? I just want to make sure that my body doesn't go into starvation mode. Thanks and I am looking forward to traveling down my ticker with the rest of you!

Sometimes you have to decrease the serving size. If the only option they give you for the blueberries is 1 cup then put in .33 serving to get it as close to the 1/3 cup. They also updated the trackers recently so that might be why you are having an issue.

I am having trouble with the tracker.. I wanted to put in 1/3 cup of blueberries and it just does nothing. I had to put in the whole cup to get credit. How can I change that?

Don't forget that if you are nursing your baby you will need extra calories and if you don't eat enough you can also go into starvation mode. Don't forget extra water if nursing.

I set this account up pre-pregnancy, so alot has changed since then. A kid later, I have way more weight to lose--so I'm going to look into the caloric intake and expenditure. I might have to re-enter all the info again. Thanks for the response.

I reached my first goal, 10% of my starting weight is completely gone...4 ever!

How many calories has spark calculated for you? I would go by that as a guide so that you know that you are getting enough calories.

I think I'm eating enough. I drink loads of water per day. It must be the exercising. I gotta try to do more. I also want to try to do it all together instead of breaking it up. Its like once I get warmed up its time to stop when I do short bursts, ya know? The thing that makes it all the more harder is with my son. The poor little guy doesn't understand bedtime and that kills me. We'll all try to be in bed by 8:30pm and he'll be chillin until about 10pm 10:30pm! So waking up earlier than 5am will make me sleep less than 6hrs. I gotta figure something out.

When you set up your goals did you put in there that you would exercise a certain amount? If you are not exercising as much as you said you would then check your goals. Are you eating within your calorie range? If you don't eat enough your body will go into starvation mode. You can read about that in the articles here on spark. Are you drinking enough water? Also give yourself time for the changes to take effect. Read as many articles as you can on the site because they are wealth of information.

I haven't gone down anything. I try to track my food as much as possible on the tracker, when I can't get it in the tracker I still track it on my own. I haven't lost anything!! Maybe I'm not doing enough exercise. I wonder, is maybe my fall is due to the fact that I don't actually exercise 1hr/day? And when I do, I break it up in 10/20/30 minutes increments? Maybe I need to start taking out an hour to do my exercising. Its really hard though because I have a 4 month old, a 4 year old, and a 23 yr old hubby who pretty much counts as one of the kids. I work full time at a desk which doesn't help and DAG this is hard. Any ideas with the exercising? I'm posting this question all over the site just to see the feedback. Help....
