You said you are obsessed with food.
Still be obsessed but with better choices.
Pick one food or an ingredient at a time and change it.
Try new recipes.
Get obsessed about new knowledge and flavors.
You need to try and change your mind set if this is going to work for you.
I'm in the same boat, need to loose weight for surgery.
Not all days are easy, but try, try anything. All the small changes add up before you know it you will be on your way.
.Please stay with this group, I'm sure the more you learn about Spark and the people here the more you will have success.

Just came across this and here's my 2 cents worth:
I agree! Change your username to what you want to become. NewWave, Fresh Bloom, HappyPoster. Something that relates to a talent you may have. Do you paint, sing, dance, write? Pick a favorite character that inspires you.

Put what you want to become as an image before you and you will unconsciously strive for it.
Keep on truckin!!
Have a great Saturday emoticon

Thank you for your post. You are looking for help and in doing so you have helped me. I needed to lose weight in order to have surgery on both of my ankles. I managed to do it which is not easy when over 50. My saving grace was the swimming pool and steam room. The pool for the exercise and the steam room to relax my muscles afterwards so that I did not hurt from the exercise. You have helped me because yes I lost roughly 60 pounds but then put back on 35 because I was immobile afterwards. 6 weeks in bed only allowed up to use washroom after each surgery and then months of very limited mobility for each. Would have been okay but I ate like I was running makes daily. You are now my inspiration to take that weight back off. I hate having people see me in a suit at the pool but chances are I will not see tnose people anywhere else so who cares. Some pools even let you swim in shorts and tee shirts, worth checking into. Another good exercise for those of us with limited mobility is chair dancing. Play old rock and roll loud and go for it after awhile you will be able to stand in one spot and rock it out. Just go for it! You can do it, I will be watching and following your lead. We are worth the effort.

Jan
Looking forward to a whole new me somewhere in my future

To change your username you can go to 'start' (top of your page) and you will see in the upper left corner the word 'Start' and below it you can click on your 'Account/ email preferences'. Then you get to see several options, 'change username' is one of them.

emoticon Glad to hear you liked the advice! I just went over to your page and added you as a friend. It is time to start seeing yourself as soon-to-be-thinner and capable! (Which is the contrary of 'fat and flawed'!) We all have flaws but let's focus on our qualities and work on strengthening ourselves.

That must have been a very bitter experience to have that note on your clothes.

Re: "I don't know why I am obsessed with food": it is so easy to get in trouble with overeating. It can feel very hopeless when one has a disturbed relationship with food. I know because I was a binge eater and followed treatment for it. I posted the guidelines that I learned for 'normal eating' on a team that is called 'Guidelines to Overcome Binge Eating'. I'll send you an invitation so you can take a look at it, and see if it's for you or not.

I just got done reading all of your replies to my initial message and to tell you the truth, I can't seem to stop crying for a number of reasons, first and foremost because of the time and effort complete strangers have taken to reply and to give me support, suggestions and such positive feedback. I have never even considered joining a forum such as this and did this as a fluke, as I was looking online for whatever I could to try and get myself on the right track and Spark came up and I thought " oh hell, why not" and I'm glad I did, so a big thank you to all who have demonstrated an act of kindness which I never expected. Now the other reason I am crying is because fat and flawed is the way I have seen myself my entire life, so I have never thought any different. I have been overweight and struggled with food issues since I can remember. I don't know why I am obsessed with food and continue to stuff myself. I remember my mom used to pin a note to my clothes every day that I went out to play that said "PLEASE DO NOT FEED". As if I was not teased mercilessly for being fat, that just added fuel to the fire and of course added to my warped self image. I have spent 58 years beating myself up and being beat up by others for being fat, so that is why the first thing I thought of when coming up with a screen name was fat and flawed. But you are right, if I want to start a change, I have to start changing by no longer beating myself up. So I will ponder a good name that will give me a boost and will change my screen name as a start. Thank you for bringing that to my attention and for all of your messages.

I would start by changing the username. Don't call yourself 'fatnflawed'... call yourself 'goodlucknow' or 'happyme' or 'hopeofloss' or 'sunshine' (you will probably need to add a number to those names as others may have picked it already, but still). Pick any name you like but make it a positive name!
Pick a color, or a woman's name that you like or the name of a celebrity that you admire, or a character trait that you have or would like to have - anything but do not bring yourself down every time you visit sparkpeople by seeing that name saying you are 'fatnflawed'. That's not what you want to be! It won't motivate you!

Please, promise you will start by taking that one first step!

Apart from that I think you need to make a sensible food plan, don't try to eat very little or it will backfire. Eat 3 meals and 2 or 3 snacks per day and allow yourself a treat once or twice a week.
And, exercise, find something you CAN do even if you can't walk much, do chair dancing, whatever... start by doing just 10 minutes per day, no more, and make that a habit.

TUK: That is the crux of it all, changing for YOU and changing the relationship to food. That was very difficult. Takes time. But I don't find I enjoy at all those foods that really aren't good for me anyhow. So, I skip it.

I have hated myself for years because of my weight...but never cared enough to change it. I knew I needed to lose weight. I would get motivated for a week or so and exercise, eat right, get bored. Whatever needed to *click* never did.

I have talked to people that can point to a moment when it clicked. I don't have a particular moment - but this time it clicked. I am not sure exactly when or how, but this time I actually want to lose weight, instead of just knowing I need to. For me, that has made all the difference in the world.

I know everyone is different, but for me the *click* was needed. Now I don't even desire the junk food, at all. I look at a coke and grab the water. No hesitation. I had only one slice of pizza in the last 3 months. I bought it as a treat... and did not enjoy it. All I could think of was that I could have just an enjoyable, filling, meal with 1/3 the calories.

Everyone gets their motivation from different places. I could not lose weight for my health, for my kids, or just because I knew I should. Somehow, now, I am doing it because I want to. I mean really want to. Now I hope that motivation stays with me.

I am tired of the overused phrase "lifestyle change", but that is what it is for me. I have changed my relationship with food. I still enjoy food but I am in charge. I am no longer a slave to my eating. Until that happened I was just periodically "starving myself" on a temporary diet, that I did not care about.

Hopefully with the support and education on this site you can find your motivation. Actually I just realized that what I call the moment of click is what they call spark... now the name of the site makes more sense... If you really want to do this - you can! emoticon emoticon

I have to lose at least 40 lbs in order to have my knee replaced and I can barely walk so exercising is a challenge, plus I just can't seem to get on the weight loss wagon. I am so frustrated that I think I'm going to start and then blow it that day or even after one day. I just have no desire to do this. I have been fat my whole life and probably have lost over 500 lbs collectively so I know I can lose weight, but just keep regaining it and now I can't seem to get started again knowing this seems like just another roller coaster ride. My sister saw me the other day and said "is this the fattest you have ever been??" Yup, sad to say, but she is right. I need all the help I can get right now and thought I would start here, any one have any ideas on how I can start to lose weight? I'm on a time crunch as my surgeon is going to retire this coming June, so I have to do this, I want him to do my knee replacement, so I have to lose the weight before he retires! Anyone want to give me a good swift kick in the butt to get me pointed in the right direction? Not sure what will help me, but I need all the help I can get. Thanks
