Hi All. I just joined today. I'm in my 50s, and find it so much easier to gain weight than to lose it. My daughter is getting married this summer, which is a great motivator to lose what I can before then, and keep on going after. I lost my job 18 months ago, and have had little luck finding work, which is definitely not helping my frame of mind or my waistline. I hope reading about your successes will help me realize I can do it, too.

The most difficult thing is the decision to act, the rest is merely tenacity. Amelia Earhart

Not sure I am getting this in the right place.
I am from Pennsylvania, fast approaching 54. I just graduated from graduate school with my Master's as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. The past four years have been an adrenalin stress filled journey. Along that journey, even though I was overweight I transformed from the hourglass shape to a rectangle. I used to have a waist. I am done with school and would like to see my waistline return. One of my problems has been mindless eating while doing homework. My life was filled with reading textbooks, research articles, writing papers, etc. There was no time to exercise- working 12 hours shifts full time and clinical hours above work was a part of the program. The homework is over but the mindless pattern of eating is still there. This is going to take some work. Getting exercise back into my routine is also a goal. Right now I look at food and gain weight. This is a great site, it too takes a few minutes of my day to navigate around. Reading all the success stories is inspiring. emoticon

I am from Maryland getting ready for my daughter's wedding and with some health problems trying to get on a healthy life track. I like to comfort eat but have to watch cholesterol, salt, lactose intolerant and not diabetic but have to watch how much sugar and no caffine (fibromyalgia) trying to figure out the menu thing and how I can make it work.

Thanks, Mary & Harriettbird, and Welcome PAH0728. I find during the week I don't really have time to explore the site, but I hope to "look around" more this weekend. Just using the site and chatting with all of you helps remind me not to drift too much in my eating during the day. I guess this really does help raise one's awareness and stay focused! I am going to check the scale Sunday and see if it records progress!

Hi, Everyone. Upstate New YOrk weather is lousy this week, rainy and cool. It is supposed to be Spring!! One tip I find helpful is to eat a whole fruit, like an apple or orange, or 1 cup of sliced strawberries or melon. It really helps fill you up. I asked my 12 year old for any tips for my first week of being good. He said, no more than 3 sweets for the week, and to do my exercise tapes at least 5 out of the 7 days. Pretty good advice!

Hi everyone - thanks for being so welcoming. It will be great to have partners in making changes. I also picked up the 'Spark' book and read through some of it then decided to try the trackers. I have been stuck for awhile at this weight - lose a little, gain it back - and feeling tired of the struggle.

So, I started using the sparkpeople trackers a few weeks ago, and I have already learned something very important for me: 1 restaurant meal can wipe out a whole week's good behavior....I had not really added up the calories involved, and eating out is a favorite thing to do with friends. Eek. Advice is welcome!

Hi Chef Bea, and Welcome Green Mouse! The quinoa salad sounds wonderful; I will give it a try. I did pretty well today, but got a little loose with a couple of snacks tonight. I am tracking on paper, but not tracking on the computer. Didn't think it mattered much, so long as I track. I think this is going to be tough for me! Have a good night.

Hi GREENMOUSE and emoticon

I'm also a newbie here, and also in Colorado...where it is ridiculously cold this morning, for May 15th (my 26th wedding anniversary.)

I also reached my goal weight a few years ago (from 236 to 138) but have let a few too many pounds...re-visit me! (Hence my being here!!!)
I'm here to get back on track too...and so far...since Thursday!!! -- so good.

Congrats on your upcoming wedding anniversary emoticon

Hi all, I'd like to introduce myself. I live in Colorado, mother of two grown children, have four delightful grandchildren, will be married 40 years this coming June *gosh* ! I love to knit, garden, spin, read.

Reached my goal weight with Weight Watchers about 4 years ago and gained most of it back. Couldn't believe myself!!! But once I reached goal, somehow the accountability slipped away, I guess. At any rate, I'm back on track. Loving the trackers here..they do keep me honest!

Glad to be here ! And thanks for the welcome/mails emoticon

The only dietary restriction is that my husband has an allergy to shrimp, and I have an allergy to scallops. Also, I won't be cooking liver or lamb, because I just don't care for either of those. Time wise, it varies. Some mornings I have 20 minutes, some mornings I'm lucky to get in 10 minutes to throw something together. I walk our dog in the morning, which is a good thing, but of course, it cuts into time for lunch prep. Dinner is probably the main meal of the day, so I have to watch how many calories I put into lunch.

What do you like to eat, and how much prep time do you have?
Is lunch you main meal of the day?
Do you have any dietary restrictions...other than watching calories! (Low sodium/sugar, high fiber/low carb. etc.)

Thanks Chef Bea. I think any great lunch ideas would be helpful. When I have time, I make my husband and I some great salads, but on days I am not in a salad mood, or short on time for veggie chop duty, then I tend to rush out the door, thinking I'll just pick up something.

That is a neat occupation you have. I love to cook for family and friends, but I would not want the stress of cooking for a bunch of people, under a deadline, and serving a wide variety of meals. Good for you!

Hi OreoColumbus,

Thanks.

I am a classically trained Chef. In recent years I have been working on developing reduced fat and calorie versions of classic recipes. Are you looking for anything in particular?

I'm also a noob here.

In 2006 I lost 86 pounds, but let a few creep back on in the last year and a half or so. Since the beginning of this year, I've been working on banishing those few pounds again (lost 15, and have about 15 more to go.)

Really enjoying the exercise and food tracking on this site.

I'm 52, married 26yrs (tomorrow is our anniversary,) and mom to two adult kids. Son will be 21 next month. Daughter is 24 and a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force (as is her hubby.)

Looking forward to "meeting" y'all

Thanks for the response. I actually got up and walked 1 mile today in my neighborhood. It only took 20 minutes and I'll try for 15 minutes tomorrow. I am going to try writing what I eat throughout the day and then record here in the evening. Welcome to you also.

Welcome Riddle07. I am starting by trying to write down what I eat and get at least 10 minutes of exercise in a day for the first week. My weakest time is in the morning, as I am at a desk most of the day, and I get bored or antsy sitting, so I go to grab a snack...Just bad habits I need to break!

Hi everyone! I've been a member for a couple of years but usually got out of routine of tracking after a short time. I am really going to try this time to stick with this. I'm 50+ and also in the middle age spread slump. I can't believe I gained this much weight and mostly in the abs area. I'm a hospice social worker and don't have much opportunity during the day to eat or exercise properly as I am with families in their homes. So any ideas will be most welcomed. I'll give support to who I can and take any and all advice.

Hi everyone. I just joined Sparkpeople, after reading about a couple in Woman's Day, that found the nutritional plan on this website the most helpful for their weight loss. I am in the "middle age spread" slump, so am trying to gradually lose the extra pounds. I would like to lose 20 pounds and get into a regular exercise routine. I am 51, married, with two boys, ages 8 and 12, who are currently in Little League madness! I hope to get focused, and then stay focused, with the assistance of this website. Look forward to the discussions.

Hi. I just joined, too. The site is so big and has so much, so I fgured I'd start with the nutrition plan and fitness---oh, this forum, too. I was good today--I ate from my plan and only stole 4 M & M's. Not bad for a chocolate lover like me! I plan to get rid of all the goodies this weekend. I just found a SUPER deal to go to Mexico, so I asked my husband and he said fine. I'm addicted to traveling, but need to win the lottery to go as often as I like. hahahah But like you, now I've got a short term motivator. We leave in a little less than 6 weeks. Maybe I can lose 5-6 pounds by then if I'm good! I'll cheer you on, too! You have until November--you can do it!

Hey everybody, I am a newbie too and looking forward to beginning to lose some weight and to becoming a part of this community. So far it looks fantastic but there is so much to it and I've been trudging around trying to figure it out. It's been fun so far! I'm looking forward to making many new friends here too.

Besides eating and drinking wine (LOL), I love my dog Charlie who is a lhasa apso and lives with me and my wonderful daughter Leah (who doesn't live with me thank goodness LOL).

I'm 52 and not counting and am going to lose 20 lbs. (plus 5 for wiggle room haha). I live in Western Massachusetts. I love to travel and am currently booked for a trip to Barcelona Spain in November and would like to look mahhhvelous (or at least pretty good) for my trip! So hang in there with me and Iíll help you if you can help me! Itís so much easier when you have peopleÖ..count me in!

Talk to you soon!

Hi, I am 'new' to Sparks People and I found the site when I was looking online to download a free food journal. I have tried this kind of format before w/another 'diet' program, which was also free - but with some 'tragic' life experiences I fell away from that program. I am trying again to regain the motivation and committment for a healthier ME...I need to lose a lot of weight but I am setting short term goals so I am not overhwhelmed. Still trying to deal w/loss and stress, but have such a great family and loved ones I am healing everyday.

Hi everyone! I'm Terryn, just started using SP to help me track my progress. I went completely and totally, joyfully, off my eating plan last year and put on a quick 20. I'm halfway to taking it back off and hit a 5 week plateau (don't you just HATE plateaus?), so I went back to food logging. Sure enough, I wasn't eating enough and definitely not enough protein. So now I'm back on track. emoticon

Overall I think I'll be losing about 10-15 (I'll see when I get there), but my first goal is just to get back in a bathing suit this summer without cringing!

Hello everyone!

My name is Tommie (just to cut through the confusion right off the bat - I'm female). I am 53 years old and would like to lose 10 to 15 lbs. Being 5' 2" and weighing 126 I am not very far off the mark and most people don't think that I need to lose any weight. This is good for my ego but terrible for my diet.

I never weighed more than 98 pounds until I reached the age of 40 then boom! Since it is not really practical for me to weigh 98 pounds again, I think that I could be comfortable with myself at 110. I hope that being here will help me with the encouragement that I need to reach my goal.

Time to get out some heavy weights for those stubborn pounds. It will rev up your metabolism, skim off inches and you will feel fantastic! Fewer reps with heavy weights! You will NOT bulk up. We don't have the testosterone!

Hi, I'm new here. Am 53 yo, female, looking to come back and be ALIVE again. :-) Started P90X about 3 months ago, was SO hard. Have just restarted it. Gained 7 lbs doing it! So that freaked me out. Then discovered Spark quite by accident, surfing the web! It's helping me in a big way track my food (especially). I see how I eat more calories than I think. And also I don't need as much protein as some others.. (5'2") Always inspired by ladies still on the Track of Life!

I have been active with Spark People since last summer and left the "25-50 pounds to lose" team since I am within 15 pounds of my reasonable goal. (My unreasonable goal would be my HS weight--not likely to happen--and likely not healthy either!)

I live in NJ and try to work out 3 times at the gym and then walk or do videos the other days.

I went from 128 to 165 very quickly when my thyroid died. I have lost 17 pounds, very slowly, averaging just over a pound a month since I have joined Spark. I am fighting my thyroid (finally have the right meds, I think), my age and my hormones, so it is a very slow, difficult fight! But I am making progress, and since I am now 23 to 25 pounds to goal, it is time to adjust my teams. I just wish I would quit going up and down and up and down between 148 and 151! I'd like to see 125 again, but I will settle for 130!

So, here I am, new to the team...

Hello, I am back here on SP but also am a member of Beachbody.com. There are fitness programs for EVERYONE! I am so addicted to Chalene Johnson. Turbo Fire, Turbo Jam and Chalene Extreme are my favorites. I feel great, still have 20 to lose so I am here to get it done! Accountability and a food plan plus support from everyone will make all of us winners!
Let's do it!

Hello, My name is Donna. I joined Sparks yesterday. I have gained weight due to a couple of health issues. I am also working on being more positive, and getting out of my house where I have been staying at for weeks at a time. I am making myself go thou the motions right now in hopes that I can catch on and improve my life. Losing weight will help me to get around easier in hopes that I will feel like living life more, and learn to deal with chronic pain. If I don't don't think that I will ever be able to get up.

I have also started writing a blog. I have had the domain name for 2 years now.

This looks ideal! I just cancelled my WW Online account because I heard this was much more active. I like that this is a forum of people of similar age, in similar situations. I am 51, have three teens - one of whom wants to eat vegetarian and another of whom - a son - shoves up to the table raging hungry, as does my husband after a day of work. I am the one primarily responsible for meal planning and preparation. I also work. Dinner is usually at seven, but I get home at four. (Guess what happens? Over the last twenty years I've gained about 80 pounds!)

I need to lose about 60 pounds to move down to a healthy BMI. I broke my leg in February skiing, and having to go in to the fracture clinic and seeing the patients with knee and hip replacements was a real wake-up call. I don't want to go back there! So I'm here.
